KYLE GILMOUR INTRODUCTION
WELCOME
As a Year 11 student attending the open evenings, the college radiated an atmosphere of selfreliance and independent learning, and this has enabled me to better my work ethic and my attitude. This environment gave me the relief I needed in transitioning from my GCSE studies to my A Levels.

As a student at One, I have discovered how great my decision was to join. The college boasts outstanding facilities, intuitive teaching and excellent management and I always feel safe and welcome each time I enter.

Work is exciting yet challenging, and it is fantastic to have teachers that can provide the support students like me require. If you have any queries or concerns, the teachers will definitely give you the response you need.

Additionally, the extra-curricular activities are also excellent for everyone. I am currently the Chairperson of the Debating Society, where a weekly debate is organised to allow students to exercise their talents in debating and to express their views and values. Aside from this, we have our exceptional Music on the Bridge performances, fun fairs and more. These occasions are always fun and thrilling for all in the college.
Vocational courses at Level 3 My favourite thing about One is its enthusiastic attitude towards you. The insecurities you may have when you first join will without a doubt be eliminated soon enough, allowing you to freely express your imagination and your talents in and out of the lesson. As an ambitious person, I do believe that a combination of hard work and assistance from the college will give you the confidence you need to succeed, and I am thrilled to be educated at a great Sixth Form College such as Suffolk One.

RENEE GREENWOOD
What are your next steps after One? I plan to go to Bristol University where I will hopefully (fingers crossed) study a degree in French so that I can become a teacher of the language.
Why do you like studying at One? One is such a great environment to be in – it’s new and exciting. Everyone is so friendly and just like you, they want to be there so you’re not having to constantly deal with unenthusiastic people as you would in high school. Why did you choose One? Through word of mouth of its great reputation, along with the many opportunities I visited, was enough to encourage me to choose One. I like how open it is. The doors you open as you enter the building act as these awaiting arms eager to receive you, so you’ve always got this sense of comfort whilst you’re there, which is rather nice.
What advice would you give to prospective students? Firstly I’d say really think about what you want to do. Don’t choose a subject purely because your friend’s chosen it and on the same note, don’t let your peers dictate what you’re going to study. College is the time when you need to start thinking about your future and how you’re going to achieve what you want, so be selfish – you are your most important person. Complacency gets you nowhere – making sure you’re constantly keeping on top and going over everything you’ve learnt is the best way you can help yourself out. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help, no matter what kind of help that is. Any other comments? Have fun and don’t be daunted by the atrium’s ‘catwalk’ – strut your stuff.

Hope In the world we live in today, there is negativity around every corner, closing in on all of us until we can do nothing as it enters our minds, festering away; corrupting happy thoughts. Our lives are not a fairytale where we definitely have our happy ending and the villains will be defeated once and for all; but that doesn’t mean that we have to accept that we cannot have our happy endings. These happy endings are not dictated by a prince or princess rescuing us, but by ourselves. Whilst Cinderella had a fairy godmother to assist her with a beautiful gown and unforgettable shoes, without the hope that she possessed, she would never have had the courage to enter that ballroom and feel worth more than what her step-family believed she was.
Jennifer Morrison once said, “It takes an incredible strength to be vulnerable.” This could not be truer for the people of today – especially the younger generation who spend the majority of their time browsing some form of social media. The idea that you have to look ‘perfect’ means that we are all forgetting to be something we all are: human. To be human is to laugh, to cry, to look the way we want to look – piercings, tattoos, dyed hair. To be human is to embrace who you truly are. This originality, however, is being stamped out by airbrushed, photoshopped models who are portrayed as the ‘ideal look’ and the person we should aspire to be. It is time that we fight back. Social media, television and films are all guilty culprits of peer-pressuring their audiences into feeling bad about themselves. But, no more. No one will decide my fate but me. I have the power to punch back and say that this is who I am. I don’t have a fairy godmother, and I don’t need one. I have the power inside of me to dig my own path, build my own bridge and show who I am; my version of perfection.
I don’t need perfect hair, an unmarked and toned body and that ‘perfect face’ to be perfect. Perfection is messy buns, a face devoid of make-up and baggy clothes as I cuddle beneath a blanket to read a book. Perfection is allowing myself the vulnerability of expressing myself; watching or reading something that makes me laugh, or cry. Perfection is allowing myself to be me; untarnished from the need to conform and be just like everyone else. “Fairytales are a reminder that our lives will get better if we just hold onto hope. Your happy ending may not be what you expect but that is what will make it so special.” Our happy endings are within our grasp with the hope in our hearts that we are enough; we are special, we are our own embodiment of perfection. We are punching back and saying “this is who I am.” Only I can decide what I do, or how I feel.
P R OS P ECTU S 201 8 – 2 0 1 9
Megan Lofthouse-Mason
Social media grips us all with an iron fist and influences the way we not just see the world, but ourselves. Our opinion of who we are changes as our belief of the need to conform takes over. We believe that we must be a certain size and shape, or dress a particular way. Girls believe that we cannot be intelligent because we are classed as a ‘geek’ or look how we want because we are classed as ‘ugly’. Boys believe that showing emotion is showing weakness, making them somehow less of a human being than anyone else. Labels are thrown at us from all angles with the narrow-minded belief that no one should be unique, that no one should be different from anyone else.

you are your whole “People are going to tell you who and say, ‘no, this is life. You’ve just got to punch back gs, you’re going to who I am.’ If you want to change thin m yourself, because have to go out there and change the world.” there are no fairy godmothers in this
I am enough. I am perfect. I looked inside myself and found someone who was more than I originally expected – a strong being who will not be tainted by the words and opinions of others. People are so capable of saving themselves, yet they don’t realise it. I am me; unique, independent. I don’t need that prince to rescue me; I do that quite well all on my own.

Subjects I Study
Suffolk One is great college where students like me can enjoy all the lessons provided for our courses with loads of help from our teachers, along with very helpful tutorials and the places where you can study in peace. Why did you choose One? I wanted to go to a college where I would find opportunities and enjoyment whilst studying and Suffolk One turned out to be the right place. What are your next steps after One? My teachers have told me about the great opportunities around England where sport courses are offered, such as UCFB Campus in Wembley where I would like to study Sports Management or perhaps University of Suffolk Sport Science degree, but at the moment I’m still unsure what to go on to. What advice would I give to new students? Always remember to organise yourself with work and time, don’t think you’ll be stressed just because you might struggle with your work. Never be afraid to ask one of the teachers because they will help and support you throughout your years of studies at One; you can always expect a sense of humour and a friendly smile from all the staff members. Any other comments? Possibly the best college in Suffolk.

The welcoming environment and the staff who provide a large amount of support, allow me to feel like I am able to achieve the best results possible. Why did you choose One?
It had the most information about what I wanted to do and the staff were helpful and the kindest therefore allowing me to feel welcome. What are your next steps after One?
I am hoping to go on to Loughborough University to study psychology to help towards a career as a Clinical Psychologist.
“Don’t allow others to influence your choices and do what you feel is best as it’s your future”
Music Performance Sociology English Language & Literature combined Why do you like studying at One? I like studying at One because of the open, relaxed atmosphere and the facilities that are available. Why did you choose One? I chose One as I feel very relaxed and at ease there. There is also a lot of music events which helped me in my decision. What are your next steps after One? After One, I’d like to go to university and study English which will hopefully lead to my career in teaching English at secondary level.
What advice would you give prospective students? My advice for prospective students would be to choose your subjects wisely. Make sure you have a full understanding of what each course involves - if you’re in doubt then ask. Initially, I doubted taking A Level Music simply because I didn’t know if I had enough knowledge for it; because I was in doubt, I simply emailed the music teacher who really reassured me! I have now been studying both Music and Music Performance for a term and do not regret taking them one bit! If in doubt, ask - if you never try, you never know!

The One debating society is one of the most popular and certainly the most lively extra curricula clubs at One. The society is entirely student run, with an elected student executive (chairperson, vice chair and secretary). Topics are selected on a weekly basis and vary enormously. We cover topics from science, politics, religion, economics, sport, current affairs and whatever takes our fancy! We have entered debating and public speaking competitions in the past, reaching local and regional finals. We use both formal and informal debating styles in order to engage students, build confidence and develop analytical skills. More than anything we learn how to develop meaningful arguments.
Strategy Club Whether you are a novice or a grandmaster you are welcome to attend the Strategy Games club at Suffolk One. We play chess, bridge and other strategy games. As much as we may focus on improving your skills or teaching you the basics, it is mostly an opportunity to seek solace from your day to day college life. An opportunity to meet fiends and pit your wits against each other.
The LGBT group meet weekly to share key information and talk about any upcoming events. The group aims to offer support and friendship to its members and is a place to share experiences and talk about any issues. The group will have a stand at the Fresher’s Fair in September and will be posting information about meeting locations on their noticeboard in the atrium.
Games Club A weekly lunchtime club in which students can indulge in playing and sharing their favourite games. Friendly rivalry and competition are welcome in the worlds of Rocket League, Battlefront, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart amongst many others. Console and PC gaming is popular amongst our students, come along and join in for glory in your favourite games!… or just enjoy the great company, all gamers welcome!

Each event is advertised to the student body via email and students can sign up for the activities and events which interest them. This role is particularly beneficial for students looking to pursue a career in events management or marketing.
Student Rep The Year 12 and Year 13 Student Reps are democratically chosen by their peers and meet half termly to discuss key topics identified through tutorials or through Student Surveys. A Student Rep gives students direct input into college discussions and ensures the student perspective is considered in all decisions made within college. Student Reps pass on feedback and make suggestions on behalf of all students. Student Reps also foster a sense of collectiveness and community among students, which can make other students feel welcome and valued, allowing them to get the most out of their time as a student. Student Reps will have the opportunity to represent One at events such as the Leadership Conference, open events and during enrolment. Being a Student Rep is a really positive experience and one which is great for including in a personal statement or CV.
We are delighted to offer students studying Business, Accounting and/or Economics the opportunity to join One’s IoD development programme. This pathway is designed to complement your academic studies, equipping you with the key skills, knowledge and understanding to successfully undertake practical, hands-on project management tasks. The programme encourages peer group support whilst working with local businesses to solve challenging and stimulating real-world scenarios. Participants receive an IoD membership which opens doors to thousands of members and an opportunity to visit and make use of the amazing facilities at the Head Office in Pall Mall, London. In addition, students will be awarded a formal certificate on successful completion of the project management tasks which will enhance your opportunities in the business world when you leave One.

Throughout the academic year the college is involved with a variety of events and charity activities. Students are offered the chance to be involved with the planning and marketing of these events though the role of College Events Ambassador.
The LRC ambassadors are a group of students who volunteer to help the Learning Resource team. Everyone has different strengths so support can range from talking to prospective students, assisting with national celebrations of reading or helping with routine administrative tasks. There is something for everybody with an emphasis on enjoyment. All ambassadors record their volunteering hours with VInspired and achieve nationally recognised volunteering awards which enhance CVs and personal statements.
This year we are introducing an exciting new role, Marketing Ambassador. Students who have an interest in marketing or journalism will have the opportunity to work with the marketing team at One on a range of different projects and have the chance to write articles for the website and local paper on topics that are of interest to them. Anyone interested in becoming a Marketing Ambassador should email marketing@suffolkone.ac.uk at the start of the academic year.

"My advice to Year 11 students is to come to an open event, have a look around so you can see first-hand the fantastic facilities and support on offer. One was definitely different to what I had anticipated. Always ask for support if you need it as staff are always able and happy to help."

I am currently undertaking my PhD in Psychology Autism research and will be finishing this in 2020. After I finish my PhD I am planning to stay in academia and perhaps try my hand at lecturing. Would you recommend One to prospective students? Absolutely, the advice and support I received whilst there really helped me with my career options. One provided careers days, critical thinking activities and mock interviews which helped me decide on Cambridge as my university of choice.

Why did you come to One? Originally, it was a decision between One and Colchester Sixth Form for me, but it was the building at One that sold it for me – it’s so open and new, with great facilities. In a way, I followed my best friend here, but it has paid off now as we are both well into our careers within our engineering fields. Why did you choose the course? I preferred the idea of studying the BTEC Level 3 Engineering Extended Diploma to A Levels because it was more intensive. Studying one course as opposed to four different courses, I felt was better for me as it was more specialised, rather than studying four and being a jack of all trades. What did you enjoy most about the course and One? We were the first engineering group at One and because of this, we didn’t know what we were walking into. At the time [in 2011] there was only one teacher for Engineering, regardless of that, Ghulam [Teacher of Engineering] did so well, not only was there banter, he kept us under control, and it was the teaching of the course that effectively got me into my apprenticeship with Rolls Royce. What was your next step after studying at One?
Aerospace Engineering at Loughborough University; I ended up choosing the apprenticeship. The deciding factor was that I would get my degree paid for, I got a wage and I could move away from home so I had my independence. Having chosen this route, I sometimes thought that I may have missed out on the university life and culture, however that being said, I met so many friends on the apprenticeship and so taking this path has still given me great friends and a great social life.

What does your day-to-day work life consist of? It could be anything, it’s so varied – it’s often non-conformance of products, filing paperwork, meeting with new and existing customers, talking to suppliers. Day to day it’s a lot of meetings, a lot of paperwork, and talking to a lot of people – supply chain, customers, internal, external. What are your plans for the future? I’d still like to work within manufacturing or mechanical engineering, but I would like to go into management. Typically, I work in a role known as a NPI – a New Product Introduction engineer; so management within NPI is something I would look to do. I’m already a product manager and I enjoy the challenges the responsibility keeps you on your toes.
