We believe that we have established excellent relationships between students and staff who work in partnership to achieve the very best. We are very proud of our students and their achievements. They have achieved outstanding results, which are contained in this booklet for your information. Our college community is one where students feel safe, valued and challenged to go the extra mile to succeed. We hope that you will decide to join us. Frequently Asked Questions
What are the entry requirements for the different courses?
a
Generally, Level 3 courses (A Levels and BTEC Extended Level 3 Diplomas) require 5-6 GCSEs at grade A*-C, including GCSE English (Grade 4).
a
Level 2 courses require five GCSEs at grade E or above, including a D in Maths and/or English Language (Grade 2).
a
Entry requirements do vary – all can be found in the 2017-18 Prospectus.
When do lessons start and finish?
Lessons start at 9.30 and finish at 3.45. There is a fixed mid-day lunch break and flexible breaks in the mornings and afternoons. There isn’t a bell for each lesson so you must ensure you remain aware of the time. Students are welcome to work at the College both before and after lessons.
Will I be a Full Time Student at One?
It is our expectation that the vast majority of students will be full time and it is very likely that a student would have some activity at One for five days a week. We expect you to work hard when at the College, and you will get access to outstanding support from teachers, PPTs and the learning resource team.
If I want to do A-levels, how many can I do?
Students usually do four AS levels in year 12, though five is a possibility in exceptional cases. In year 13 students would decide to continue all four or to concentrate on three. British universities ask for three A-levels when offering provisional places to students.
Can I mix A-levels with Diplomas?
a
Yes. If you take a Level 3 Diploma you can supplement this with an AS level but this is not compulsory.
a
Equally, a student on an A level programme can choose to take a Subsidiary National Diploma, which is equivalent to one A Level.
How important are GCSE English Language and Maths?
a
Extremely important, entry criteria for all courses will take note of achievement in English Language and/or Maths.
a
If you do not attain a grade 4 or better in these subjects, we will support you with a second chance programme and work with you to improve your qualifications in these vital subjects. As of September 2014, the government made a re-sit compulsory for all students without a grade 4 in these subjects.
What advice and guidance is available at One?
