The city and its inhabitants are in constant conversation. When we move through the city, we encounter arrays of light, shape, and motion. In turn, we imbue these cues with meaning, lending our stories to shape the landscape. Passage pivots around this point: the city is not an object to be observed, but a continuously changing entity. The city and inhabitant are engaged in a co-evolutionary relationship; as the identity of one shifts, the other adapts. To further cultivate the audience’s sense of possibility, Passage will be located in an alleyway, transforming an oft overlooked cityspace. For a fuller, more immersive experience, we will use a space 6-8 meters long and 3 meters wide. Areas such as Queen Street West and Chinatown are ideal due to their high volume of foot traffic and respective roles in shaping Toronto’s cultural history. Passage encourages the audience to actively engage with their environment. By transforming the landscape, we prompt the audience to reinterpret their role in the city, to spark conversation, to inspire others - to add their own voice to the narrative.

This installation will be situated in an alley of the Bata Shoe Museum, part of the Bloor Street Cultural Corridor

About Us 7

Nuit Blanche Toronto is a free, annual, all-night outdoor arts festival. Since 2006, the world-renown event has partnered with the City of Toronto to celebrate the city’s arts community, featuring over 300 local, national, and international artists per year. In 2016, Nuit Blanche Toronto attracted an estimated audience of over 1 million people, including 205,000 visitors from out-of-town. The event generated over $43 million for the city, partnering with media and key markets from China and South America, as well as across Canada. Nuit Blanche Toronto is part of an international network of over 30 participating cities. The Nuit Blanche network is continually growing, with the addition of Melbourne, Australia in 2013 and Santiago, Chile in 2015. As of date, Nuit Blanche Toronto is the largest event of its kind in Canada, cementing the city’s reputation as a centre for arts, culture, business, and finance.

Phase Two

Phase Three

Prototyping and design strategies will be tested over the summer. The goal is to achieve a few tangible results over this period, including full-scale structures and functioning lights. This is also a time to begin building relationships with potential sponsors.

This phase will include final refinements to the structures as well as continued exploration and calibration of the lighting . Finally, we must assemble and produce the 15 final structures and get them ready for shipment.

At this point we will clean and prepare the site for the installation. We will install the structures, supervise the event for safety, and document the night.

14 Previous Built Work BONES This ceiling feature, created for STK Restaurant in Orlando, Florida draws inspiration from the Grace Building, an architectural landmark known for its white travertine exterior, and STK’s own cuisine. The combination of the two inspirations takes on a dramatic, sloping form reminiscent of the curvature of a rib or the sharp edge of a cattle horn. By doing so, the ceiling feature reinvents the traditional steakhouse and invites the patron to a refined dining experience.

The Web The goal of this project was to design a structure used to elevate a brick while retaining its form. The Web was inspired by the nature of string, its versatility as a material, and its ability to be woven together to create different forms. Pieces of nylon string were woven through an medium density fibreboard frame, intersecting at the center and creating a point of convergence. This point of convergence elevated the brick, held by the strings in tension. The materiality of the string allowed for light to bounce and reflect, often making the string appear translucent, nearly invisible from certain angles. This lent the installation a weightless quality and further played with the diverse properties of string.

#IdeasForTheBrave #IdeasForTheBrave is a projection installation intended to bring the essence of ICRAVE to the public. The installation integrates and abstracts features from ICRAVE’s previous design projects in a kaleideoscope-like fashion, and was the first in a series of installations completed by future interns. The hashtag is meant to create an online archive of the series.

Passage invites the audience to reflect on these interactions, transporting them into a luminescent pathway. There, the audience will navigate through the structure, guided by a woven arrangement of polyester string. The structure itself will consist of a series of wooden frames lined by mirrors and strip lighting, creating an illusion of depth and extending the pathway far beyond its physical boundaries. The installation will also have an interactive element; sensors placed at various points detect the audience’s movements and change the light’s rhythm to pulse along the route. With these elements, Passage represents the multiplicity of the city, its infinite possibilities, and the ways city and inhabitant challenge each other to change.
