A home for the senses
With its grand scale and classical period detail, 10–11 Carlton House Terrace offers an exceptional canvas for any event. Overlooking St James’s Park, Whitehall and The Mall, which runs between Admiralty Arch and Buckingham Palace, this John Nash designed house has been described by architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner FBA as one of the capital’s finest Georgian treasures, ranking among ‘the greatest terrace houses ever built in Britain’. While the British Academy has occupied 10–11 Carlton House Terrace since 1998, the building has played host to members of the Royal Family, Prime Ministers, Members of Parliament and business leaders for 180 years. From its sweeping staircases and eclectic art collection to the sounds of the Royal Household Cavalry passing by, 10–11 Carlton House Terrace is undoubtedly a home for the senses.

One of London’s great historic houses French classical style remodelling from distinguished architectural practice Detmar Blow and Ferdnand Billerey. William Gladstone’s former home No. 11 was refurbished as part of a £2.75 million redevelopment in 2010. The twelve-month project restored the rooms to their former glory and joined it to its neighbour, No. 10 doubling the space available for hire. The classical Nash architecture of No. 11 includes the opulent plasterwork of the Music Room, a grand Regency staircase flanked by torchères (like others in Buckingham Palace) and a state-ofthe-art auditorium.
The facilities developed at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace serve as a versatile setting for conferences, seminars, promotional launches and academic and business meetings. They also provide the most perfect relaxed and more informal surroundings for weddings, cocktail parties and other special occasions. Carlton House Terrace is a classicallystyled terrace separated by the Duke of York’s Memorial at Waterloo Place. It was constructed during the late 1820s and early 1830s on land previously occupied by Carlton House, the residence of the Prince Regent, who became George IV. The Roman Classical style was conceived by architect John Nash with two aims in mind: to provide good views of St James’s Park for residents and to provide an impressive backdrop to both the Royal Park and The Mall. As soon as it was finished, Carlton House Terrace became one of the most fashionable addresses in London. Although the terrace was badly damaged during World War II, much of the interior of No. 10 has survived from the early years of the 20th Century, when the 2nd Viscount Ridley commissioned a significant
