Color Pencil and Graphite October 2 to November 27 Tuesdays, 9:30am-noon, No class November 20 F0703 8 Weeks; All levels Instructor: Karla Mann Explore a variety of drawing techniques with color pencil and traditional graphite material. Learn to build and layer the media to create beautiful, realistic drawings. Students of all levels have the option of learning to draw using the grid method. Bring photographs or images to work from. Pay special attention to contour, gesture, anatomical structures, mass conceptions, planes, perspective and proportion. Develop better understanding of line quality, tone and value. The Imaginative Self October 2 to December 11 Tuesdays, 7-9:30pm, No class November 20 F0705 10 Weeks; All levels Instructor: Suzanne Stevens Use your imagination and get your creative juices flowing in this course for students of all levels. Experiment with various painting, drawing and mixed-media techniques while taking part in exercises geared to expand your artistic vision. Watercolor Basics and Beyond October 4 to November 29 Thursdays, 10am-1pm, No class November 22 F0714 8 Weeks; Beginner to Intermediate Instructor: Ray Hershberger Learn watercolor techniques in this course for beginnerand continuing students who want to “brush up” on the fundamentals. Emphasis is placed on the special properties of watercolor paints: transparent, semitransparent, opaque, semi-opaque, staining, non-staining and sedimentary qualities. Color theory and color mixing enhance student compositions. Formal presentations, practical demonstrations and exercises, painting periods and mini-critique sessions serve to bolster students’ confidence in watercolor media. Members $120

Media Blend October 10 to November 14 Wednesdays, 7-9:30pm F0715 6 Weeks; All levels Instructor: Donna Iona Drozda Stepping outside of the box of preconceived or ‘learned’ ways of seeing can be unnerving. As artists, sticking with the ‘tried and true’ can actually become the stiff and stagnant. Uncover and discover exciting blends of mixed media materials and explore a renewed and refreshing way of expressing your creativity. Experiment with a variety of drawing and painting materials and create hand-made prints, stamps and stencils. Each session will build on the last so that by week six participants will feel more inclined to experiment on their own and express their ideas and world views in a deeply personal, relevant and invigorating style. Sawyer Students explore intermediate and advanced techniques to refine their handbuilding, wheel-throwing, decorating and glazing skills. New artistic directions in materials, methods and design are sources of study. Students look at contemporary ceramicists to better inform their own process. Members $125 + $50 firing fee Exploring Clay Extrusions October 11 to November 1 Thursdays, 9:30am-1:30pm F0723 4 Weeks; Intermediate to Advanced Instructor: Barbara Kobylinska Students explore the vast possibilities in clay using an extruder. Experiment with various solid die plates to create projects such as coil vessels, bowls and planters. Use hollow die plates to create lidded boxes, tiles, vases and sculptures. Slideshows, practical demonstrations, hands-on construction, decorating and mini-critique sessions round out the experience. Members $70 + $15 materials and firing fee


Raku: Masking and Glazing Techniques October 20, 27, 28 Saturday, Sunday, 10:30am-3:30pm F0724 3-day workshop; All levels Instructor: Genez Malebranche Students use the pottery wheel or handbuilding techniques to create two artworks to be fired in a “communal” outdoor Raku kiln. Emphasis will be placed on design and construction of the artworks in order to withstand the thermal shock of the Raku process. A variety of surface decoration techniques will be demonstrated and utilized including, glazing techniques such as pouring, splashing, dipping and spraying combined with masking techniques. Members $100 + $15 materials and firing fee Pit Firing Techniques November 3 and 4, Saturday, Sunday, 10am-3pm November 10 and 11, Saturday, Sunday, 11am-2pm F0725 4-day workshop; All levels Instructor: Genez Malebranche Students use the pottery wheel or handbuilding techniques to create two artworks to be fired in an outdoor pit firing. Emphasis will be placed on design and construction in combination with burnishing techniques and a variety of resist methods. During the second weekend of the course, students will prepare pieces for the firing, assist in creating the pit and learn about the firing process. On the final day of class, pieces will be retrieved from the pit, cleaned and finished for an informal review. Learn the basics of manual digital camera functions including ISO settings, white balance, image resolution, shutter speeds and aperture settings as well as image aesthetics. Photoshop techniques that relate to file size, cropping, contrast control, color correction, selection tools, layers and masking are covered. Students are required to bring digital camera with fully manual controls, a laptop with Photoshop installed and mouse attachments to class each week to in order to learn various techniques. Some experience with photography is helpful. Members $135 Black-and-White Darkroom Photography October 4 to December 13 Thursdays, 7-10pm, No class November 22 F0728 10 Weeks; All levels Instructor: Derek Eley This darkroom course covers simple to advanced technical aspects of the black-andwhite darkroom (35mm and medium format) and expressive uses of the medium. Individual instruction, demos, lab work, shooting assignments, slide discussions and informal group critiques enhance the learning experience. Course may be repeated. Students must attend seven of ten classes to qualify for open lab privilege. Members $150

Processes explored will include cyanotype, Polaroid lifts and transfers, creating digital negatives and Lazertran. Explore a wide range of origami papers and discover the rich history of this craft. Students will learn to make a variety of seasonal winter inspired models including snowflakes, snowmen, stars, mittens etc. Completed models can be used as decorations, added to greeting cards, journals and more. Barnes This course is an introduction to the Renaissance style of writing known as Italic. Once the basic letter forms are learned, this style can be used and explored with a contemporary flair and can be applied to invitations, envelopes, scrapbooks, recipes and more. Children’s Classes 1ST ART Let 1st Art be your first stop for education fun. Our experienced early childhood specialist has designed a fun, age-appropriate curriculum based on a playful approach to art. The 1st Art program engages our youngest artists and fosters learning by teaching fundamental motor skills, increasing self-confidence, promoting awareness of the visual and tactile world, and by integrating the senses. Each week students work on several topical projects and will finish at least one of them to take home from each class. Expect a balance of drawing, painting and craft-based projects during each 5-week session.

Drawing and Painting: The Basics I October 11 to November 15 Thursdays, 4:30-6:30pm AF0701 6 Weeks Instructor: Donna Iona Drozda This is a fast-paced drawing class for beginning and continuing students held in an inspired setting. Each child’s natural style will emerge through a series of exercises designed to open the artist’s eye. Students create a personal portfolio and experience a variety of media from pencils and charcoal to simple printmaking techniques and painting. Faculty Michele Barnes earned a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, has studied with world-renowned calligraphers and has attended several International Calligraphy Conferences. She has exhibited her work in NYC; locally and nationally and her calligraphy has been commissioned by New York University and is in many private collections. In addition to her calligraphic work, Michele is an encaustic artist and printmaker. She has taught in both public and private venues and is currently an art educator in Virginia Beach. Donna Iona Drozda, a widely exhibiting and published painter and author, has artwork in a number of corporate collections and is a frequent presenter of workshops, lectures and classes both locally and nationally. Rachel Nicole Dunavant earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Crafts and Material Studies with a focus in ceramic sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. She has taught for Young Rembrandts in Richmond and worked in ceramic studios including Sophia Street Studios where she assisted Raku artist Phil Chapman. She maintained a studio at Fulton Hill and Richmond Pottery and has exhibited in several galleries and exhibitions both locally and nationally. She recently moved to the Virginia Beach area where she is focusing on her ceramic work, continuing her studies and teaching. Janet Lynn Eggen received a Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University and studied at the graduate level at several state universities. She has served as an art instructor of children and adults in Northern Virginia and adult education systems for the past 30 years. She currently works as a full-time artist and teaches privately. Her award-winning oils and watercolors have been exhibited in several art galleries locally, as well as Northern Virginia, Maryland,and North Carolina. She recently received the Award of Excellence at the Virginia Watercolor Society. Derek Eley received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design. Derek is currently an adjunct photography professor at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia and was a guest artist for CAC’s Teen Apprenticeship Program in 2007. Rich Gray is a self-taught origami artist who has been folding for over 30 years and has taught numerous classes and workshops. A five year military deployment to Japan fostered his keen awareness and interest in the art of origami Kim Herman, whose current creative outlet is in altered arts and mixed media, has over 25 years of experience working with children through her own home child care business, as well as Student Art Start, 1st Art and Pre-K programs at CAC. She teaches numerous classes and workshops for adults and children at CAC and in the local community. Barbara Kobylinska graduated from the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland where she received her master’s in Graphic Design and Stage and Costume Design. After several years of teaching, designing, and exhibiting her two-dimensional work, Barbara discovered an interest in ceramic media. She has since exhibited in CAC’s New Waves exhibition, is a member of the Ceramics Designers Association and has taught numerous classes at CAC and in the local community. Kate Kronick is an award-winning artist-photographer and teacher who has worked and exhibited in NYC, locally, and abroad. She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from New York University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Old Dominion University/Norfolk State University.

Genez Malebranche has been creating artworks in clay for over 10 years. She has exhibited in CAC’s New Waves exhibition and numerous other local and regional shows and galleries. She is the treasurer of the Ceramics Designers Association and specializes in wheel throwing, hand-building, raku and pit-firings. Recently her work was published in Clay Times Magazine, Sept/Oct. 2006. Karla Mann holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from Old Dominion University. She is an experienced teacher, having formerly taught at Tidewater Community College, and is a winner of national and international awards for her figure drawings and paintings. Karla’s work has been published in Color Pencil vol. 5, Creative Minds, and the Daniel Smith Art Supply Catalogue, fall 2005. Nancy Mansfield holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education from the University of Florida. She previously taught at the American College, Lucerne, and is known for her pastel portrait commissions. Nancy currently teaches at Tidewater Community College and is an experienced teacher of both children and adults. James O’Connor earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking and the book arts from the University of the Arts. He also received certification from the Italian Government as a qualified professional of fresco techniques. Jacqueline Poutasse trained professionally as a civil engineer draftsperson and has dedicated more than 20 years to her profession as a book artist. From 1995-2000 she had her own bindery in the Ghent area of Norfolk under the name Hummingbird Bookbinding. Jackie has been a participant in numerous shows including The Ghent Art Show, Valley Green Gallery Summer Celebration, and Craft Exposure. She has shown at several galleries and has taught many classes locally on the subject of bookbinding and book repair. Rachel Rodgers is a current Art Educator major at Old Dominion University. She has taught Art Camp at CAC and is currently teaching art at Tidewater Community College’s Montessori School where she hopes to teach the youth in the community to appreciate art and the story it tells. Ali Rogan an award-winning glass artist and teacher for over 20 years, continues her study at the famed Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts and Corning Glass Museum. She has taught for the Governor’s School for the Arts since 1998, is past-president and current board member of Peninsula Glass Guild of Virginia and coowner of Cristallo Artisans in Newport News. Elizabeth A. Sawyer received a Bachelor of Arts in studio arts from Mary Washington College in 1998 and studied Studio Production Pottery at Tidewater Community College from 1998-2001. An award-winning resident artist and instructor at d’Art Center, she has previously been a guest lecturer at Old Dominion University and Governor’s School for the Arts. She has exhibited in both local and regional shows and exhibitions. Dede Schmidt earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts as well as a teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University. She taught at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Grand Rapids Michigan. Having shown her work locally as well as nationally, Dede has won awards for her ceramic design and excellent craftsmanship. She most recently won the juror’s choice award in the 2004 Strictly Functional Pottery National. Martine Strohmeyer received a Masters of Fine Arts from Old Dominion University and is an award winning working and teaching artist. She currently teaches at the Governor’s School for the Arts and has taught in many workshops and classes both locally and nationally at universities and art museums. In 2004 she was recognized as a Distinguished Teacher in the Arts by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Suzanne Stevens holds a Master of Arts degree and is an award-winning painter and instructor with experience in a variety of media.
