BLUE BIRD NORTH
ST. PATRICK’S DAY EAST COAST KITCHEN PARTY When we first started going about planning a concert for St. Patrick’s Day, two instances
crossed our mind… either green beer at the local pub will take precedent, or an acoustic party featuring Canada’s greatest songwriters wouldn’t have you anywhere else. We are thrilled so many of you agreed with the latter and are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with us! Asking some of Canada’s top songwriters to come together for an Irish music party was an exciting prospect. Dave Gunning instantly sprang to mind. With his warm stage presence, compelling nature, and easy going manner, he stole the hearts of Arden patrons two years ago when he first graced our stage. Madison Violet and Catherine MacLellan, 2012 East Coast Music Award nominees for Folk Recording of the Year, were also obvious choices. Madison Violet inspire and intrigue their audiences, further drawing them into their performances with their lush harmonies and sound all their own. As an emerging Canadian talent, Catherine MacLellan has an effortless ability to capture the listener with her elegantly woven songs of heartfelt lyrics and catchy, playful melodies. Rounding out this super group of East Coasters is Ron Hynes. Often grouped with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen for his writing, Ron Hynes has truly become a Canadian treasure with his incredible storytelling abilities. Sláinte!

ANAIS MITCHELL
& THE HADESTOWN ORCHESTRA Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown is a collection of music that
captures your attention and stimulates your senses on all levels. Instantly you are struck with the catchy yet ethereal music; thought-provoking lyrics which tell a vivid story; and finally the voices – which bring a sweeping range of emotions, genres, styles, and personality to the songs they sing. Hadestown was a labour of love for singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell; a collaborative concept piece that re-tells the Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus, but transported into prohibition-era America. Hadestown is an incredible and timeless story of love, betrayal, and redemption. This epic re-envisioning is brought to life by Anais Mitchell and her seven-piece band and by the incredible Canadian talents of: John Rutherford as Hades, Kris Demeanor as Hermes, Stephen Tchir as Orpheus, Charlotte Cornfield as Persephone, and Andrea House, Kaley Bird, Rebecca Anderson as The Fates. These artists take on their character personas and bring them to life through song. Don’t miss this truly unique concert experience.
“Multi-layered, sensationally good, and endlessly absorbing... an extraordinary album.” – Sunday Times

L’ORCHESTRE D’HOMMES-ORCHESTRES
PERFORMS TOM
WAITS
What can you say about Tom Waits… He is one of those artists who is unique, prolific
and always evolving. Paying tribute to this musical legend is a lofty endeavour, but the members of L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orchestres (translation: The One Man Band-Band) have not only managed to do so in a rich and frenzied way, but have also captured his undeniable creative spirit. Just like Tom Waits, their performances are over-the-top exciting. Six frenzied musicians use nearly 100 unconventional objects and invented instruments to create madcap scenes of unbridled energy. Using everything and nothing to make music – from teacups to turkey-basters – the group finds offbeat solutions to reinvent virtuosity and emulate the seedy rawness of Waits’ music. Exploring and playing with sounds and images his distinct music style conjures, this highly theatrical Tom Waits experience is nothing short of sheer madness!
“It’s hard to contain your delight and laughter in the audience because the six of them look like they’re having so much fun up there, riffing and playing off one another... All of their movements seem roughly choreographed and mostly improvised which made it even more entertaining to watch. I totally urge you to find whatever means possible to see this group live.” – Avenue Calgary

ARLO GUTHRIE’S BOYS NIGHT OUT
To use the term folk legend might seem a bit obvious, but
there is no other term that encompasses the incredible impact Arlo Guthrie has had on the world of music. Music has always been a family affair; stepping from his father’s shadow Arlo became a voice for his generation with songs like City of New Orleans, Coming into Los Angeles, and Alice’s Restaurant Massacree which became synonymous with the anti-war movement of the sixties. With Boy’s Night Out, the Guthrie family tradition continues on with Arlo’s son Abe and grandson Krishna joining him for the tour. Performing music spanning his incredible 40 year career, Guthrie will entertain with his signature humorous and philosophical reflections, with his folkrock classics and with his brilliantly crafted, thought-provoking new works. Arlo puts on a show like no one else by embodying the spirit of a previous generation while staying at the forefront of contemporary folk, all combined with his unique style, which is at once hilarious and inspiring.
“Rather than avoiding controversy, he looks it square in the eye, grins at it, and then invites us all to sing along together, no matter our political or religious beliefs.” – Terry Roland, nodepression.com
