Hockey participation offers families value beyond making an individual player a better player or even a better athlete. The game of hockey is a powerful platform for participants to build character, foster positive values and develop important life skills. These benefits are available to all players, desirable to every family and transcend the game.
• Hockey should be an enjoyable family experience; all stakeholders-organizations, players, parents, siblings, coaches, referees, volunteers and rink operators-play a role in this effort.
• Hockey’s greatest value is the role it plays in the development of character and life skills.
• All hockey organizations, regardless of size or level of competition, bring value to players and families in their abaility to deliver a positive family experience.
• Physical activity is important for a healthy body, mind and spirit.
• There are significant benfits of youth participation in multiple sports.
• Hockey programs should be age-appropriate for all players, accounting for each individual’s physical, emotional and cognitive devlopment.
• There is great value in all forms of hockey, both on and off the ice.
• All hockey programs should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, colour, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconmic status. Simply put, hockey is for everyone.
We believe in our ability to improve lives and strengthen communities globally through hockey. We believe that by living by these principals will provide a health, balanced, and enjoyable experience for all and inspure

Together we raised more than $570,000* at the 13th Annual Stollery Family Day Classic – netting a total of $4.7 million since 2011!
The four-day, four-on-four invitational tournament is about kids playing a game they love, having fun and giving back in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Hockey Edmonton.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will contribute to advancing children’s health care by supporting projects for children undergoing cancer treatments.
Thank you to Steve Serdachny, the Stollery Family Day Classic organizing committee and the many volunteers, participants, sponsors and donors who make this event possible!
Welcome to our final edition of the Hockey Edmonton Magazine for the 2023-24 season.
In this issue, we are featuring the 54 gold medal winning teams from 2024 Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week (QEMHW.) Additionally, we have included a number of “spotlights” on players who won gold medals this year.
We have also included a wonderful montage of photos taken at QEMHW, photos which were generously provided by MVP Team Photos.
We also have a special feature on the three Wayne Gretzky Award winners. This award is given annually to a participant in the EFHL, Elite and Junior programs, players who exhibit sportsmanship, scholastic achievement, and community involvement.
Speaking of community involvement, we have a great feature on a grandfather/grandsons trio, who are minor hockey officials. Most people do not know this, but officials donate their time for Minor Hockey Week, which equates to a value of over $60,000, which helps make this tournament possible.
Wrapping things up, we have a special feature on the Tyler Palmowski Memorial Cup, which took place in December. Tyler was an avid hockey fan (and player), who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at only 8 years old. Tyler battled hard, and even got back on the ice, but the disease took over, and in November 2020, Tyler passed away at only 13 years old. May his memory live on.
With the hockey season winding down, we would like to wish everyone the best of luck in playoffs or any other special tournaments. Have a great spring/summer and see you back in the rinks in the fall!
Sincerely,
Hockey Edmonton and all the member organizations take pride in helping to develop character both on and off the ice. Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week takes that philosophy forward by recognizing three well-rounded athletes who make an impact in the community with Wayne Gretzky Awards. In addition to the honour, Wayne Gretzky Award recipients receive $750 from ATB Financial.
Samantha Lee, a dedicated 14-year-old athlete and compassionate community member, is a shining example of excellence both on and off the sports field. Born and raised in Meadowlark, she has immersed herself in various sports, with hockey being her true passion since the tender age of 4.
A versatile athlete, Samantha has not only showcased her prowess on the hockey rink but has also left her mark in senior volleyball, basketball, indoor and outdoor track, rugby, and handball. Her athletic achievements extend beyond the school level as she proudly represented Team Alberta in the U16 Flag Football nationals in Nova Scotia. Samantha's commitment to sports is evident in her participation in before and after-school activities, including drop-in softball and open gym sessions.
Academically, Samantha is no less impressive, excelling in her studies with an array of A grades across various subjects. Her favourite subject is science, reflecting her intellectual curiosity and dedication to academic excellence. Samantha's involvement in school activities goes beyond the playing field; she generously volunteers to manage the scoreboard during boys' team games, showcasing her team spirit and commitment to her school community.
Despite her demanding schedule, Samantha finds time to give back to her community. Raised by conscientious parents who instilled in her the value of making a positive impact, she actively participates in Meadowlark Community League events, helping with set-up and clean-up. Samantha goes above and beyond, assisting neighbours with household tasks, from shoveling snow to walking dogs and even plant watering. Her commitment extends to environmental stewardship, as she contributes to Capital City Clean Up during the summers, working to keep her community clean and vibrant.
Beyond her dedication to sports and academics, Samantha extends her compassion to the Individual Support Program (ISP) at her school. Collaborating with teachers, she engages with students facing developmental challenges, exemplifying her empathy and commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive school environment.
Samantha’s achievements extend beyond the physical and academic realms, as her involvement in volunteer work and community service reflects her commitment to being a responsible and caring citizen. Her exemplary grades and numerous athletic accomplishments make her a deserving candidate for the Wayne Gretzky Award, a recognition that she believes aligns with her dedication to hockey and her community. With Wayne Gretzky's hockey card as a constant source of inspiration, Samantha Lee is a well-rounded individual, poised to make a positive impact wherever life takes her.
Kareem Amerey is a 14-year-old making waves both on the ice and in his community. Kareem’s passion for sports and his innate sense of compassion have set him apart as a caring and dedicated young individual.
As a proud member of the KC Voyageurs, Kareem showcases his athletic prowess as he navigates the challenges of competitive play. Not only does he excel in sports, but he also takes on a leadership role as the captain of his school’s basketball team. Kareem’s commitment extends beyond personal achievement; he consistently uplifts and supports his teammates, fostering a collaborative and empowering team spirit.
Off the ice, Kareem is recognized for his benevolence and willingness to help those in need. His caring nature shines through as he actively contributes to community service initiatives. Kareem has lent a helping hand at the local food bank, exemplifying his commitment to addressing issues of hunger and community welfare. In addition, he dedicates his time to mentoring young individuals through programs like U7 Timbits and the “Apple for a Kid” initiative, showcasing his dedication to shaping positive futures for those around him.
Despite his busy schedule, Kareem’s academic excellence remains unwavering. As an honour student, he exemplifies diligence and dedication in his studies, proving that he is not only a talented, multi-sport athlete but also a committed scholar. Kareem’s ability to balance his academic responsibilities with his passion for sports and community service is a testament to his time management skills and well-rounded character. Kareem Amerey is making a positive impact, leaving an indelible mark on those around him. His caring nature, leadership in sports, and commitment to community service make him a standout individual, and his achievements as both an athlete and a scholar reflect his dedication to excellence in all aspects of his life.
19-year-old Kellen Kowalchuk is not just a hockey player; he’s a young man dedicated to making a positive impact both on and off the ice. Currently playing for the Mavericks Jr. C, previously with NWZ 701, Kellen has been immersed in the world of hockey since the age of 4, progressing through house league, club hockey, and now into the challenging realm of Junior C.
Kellen’s dedication to the sport is not only evident in his on-ice achievements but also in the recognition he has received for his commitment to academics and community service. During his time playing REM 15 AAA with CAC, he earned the Honourable Greg Ash Memorial Award, showcasing his excellence in both hockey and academics. Kellen was also nominated by his coach as the sole applicant for the EBIT scholarship, emphasizing his well-rounded contributions to both the game and his studies. The Ray Zimmel Memorial Scholarship awarded to him last year further emphasizes his commitment to hockey, academics, and community service.
An honour student for all three years in high school, Kellen goes beyond the classroom to volunteer his time and raise awareness and funds for causes close to his heart. He follows in the footsteps of his siblings, Brennan and Taya, who have both previously won the Wayne Gretzky Award, seeking to continue the family legacy through his own dedication to the sport and community service.
Kellen’s philanthropic efforts are extensive and impactful. Notably, he organized the successful “Messy Donuts for Muscular Dystrophy” campaign at his school, inspired by a hockey family facing the challenges of this condition. His dedication to the Stollery Hospital and cancer research, stemming from personal experiences with the loss of a family friend and a close friend’s battle with leukemia, demonstrates his enduring commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected.
Currently attending the second year of McEwan University pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce, Kellen is not just a hockey player; he’s a dedicated student, community leader and compassionate individual, dedicated to using his talents to create positive change. From volunteering as a referee to participating in charitable events like Cheryl’s Run for Aplastic Anemia and supporting causes like the food bank and Santa’s Anonymous, Kellen Kowalchuk embodies the spirit of the Wayne Gretzky Award through his outstanding achievements both on and off the ice.
In early December, we met up with a grandfather and grandsons trio of officials and thought it would make an interesting story.
So without further ado, we are pleased to introduce the grandfather, Bob Broomhall, along with his two grandsons, Brody McGrath and Mackenzie Way.
Bob Broomhall recently turned 75 years of age, and while being retired for many years (he was a manager with Canada Post), he remains active as a minor hockey official. Like most officials, Bob played hockey as a young lad growing up, and as he commented, “I played for a few years on community teams on outdoor rinks and played up to Bantam. I then played some men’s hockey off and on. I now play twice a week with Vintage Hockey – a senior’s hockey organization.” Bob took up officiating nearly 40 years ago. “I coached hockey for several years, but then took on a job that required a lot of travel, so I could no longer commit to coaching, so wanting to stay involved I decided to try officiating as it allowed me to choose games around my travel schedule.” Except for the brief time Bob lived in Ottawa, Bob has officiated during Edmonton Minor Hockey Week for the past 38 years. As Bob told us, “It’s good to give back to the program. Minor Hockey Week games have a great atmosphere. The excitement and intensity of the games is great. Lots of great Minor Hockey Week finals. A few years ago, Hockey Edmonton did a short video of Mackenzie and I doing a Minor Hockey Week game.”
Mackenzie Way is Bob’s 18-year-old grandson, who started officiating hockey in the 2018-19 season. As MacKenzie offered, “My family was obviously a major influence on me becoming an official with my grandpa, brother and even dad being a referee. I also saw more potential in moving forward as a hockey official rather than a player.”
Bob’s other grandson, 25-year-old Brody McGrath, took up officiating at 13 years old and also credits his grandfather for getting involved as a minor hockey official. “I always enjoyed listening to my grandfather’s stories about officiating and used to love going out and watching him as a kid. From there it turned into a great part time job as a young kid.”
Brody loves helping out at Edmonton Minor Hockey Week (officials donate their time for this event), something he has done the past 12 years. “I enjoy seeing the players having as much fun as I did back when I was playing in this tournament, but I also do it to come back and see officials I haven’t seen in a long time and ultimately just have fun with them on the ice as teammates. As much as it is a competition for the players, it’s a competition for us officials to get to the final; and I was fortunate enough one year to be selected to work a gold medal final game that went down to one-on-one overtime. It was certainly intense and probably one of the most fun experiences I have with officiating. Another special memory I have would be reffing with my brother Mackenzie for the first time in this tournament. It makes me proud to see him come up through the ranks and develop as an official.”
Mackenzie has also been officiating games for Edmonton Minor Hockey Week since first eligible. “I have volunteered for minor hockey every season since I started officiating. Being a part of the biggest tournament in North America is pretty awesome to say the least. I remember the memories I made as a kid, playing in it so seeing young players also participating is special. The whole experience - seeing a team celebrating after winning the gold medal after an intense overtime is always exciting.”
Mackenzie works as a linesman for U15AAA and U17AAA, along with Junior C, and referees at the U15AA and U16AA levels. “My biggest role model would, of course, be my brother and my grandpa. They have both achieved and accomplished so much for Hockey Alberta and themselves as officials and I hope I can follow in their footsteps.”
bob brodyHis grandfather (Bob) usually officiates U13, U15 and U18 and some U21 rec hockey, and he also assigns referees for U13 hockey for the Northwest Zone.
As for Brody, he’s currently a referee in the Western Hockey League (WHL), Canada West (Men’s University Hockey), and in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). “A major highlight for me was I was selected to work the Mac’s U18AAA tournament in 2019 and I received the gold medal assignment. Another amazing assignment for me would have been the Edmonton Oil Kings Teddy Bear Toss in 2021. I haven’t skated with that many people in a rink before but it was certainly a memory that I will always remember.”
Both brothers credit their grandfather for getting them involved in officiating. As Brody described, “My grandfather has definitely been my biggest supporter over the years. I started reffing because of him, and I would say that because of the support from him, he is my biggest role model and mentor. He comes and watches a lot of games I work in town and constantly strives to make me a better official. The best part of doing games with my brother is that I get to see him grow as an official, and hopefully instil what I know about the game to make him a better one.
“Working with my grandfather, I have the opportunity to learn and reflect on his experience, which makes me a better official. Both relationships I have with them are very special to me and drive me to perform better. I have been fortunate enough to skate many times with my grandfather and brother, a lot of which were in Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. We try to all do at least one game together a year to have fun and bond as family.”
Mackenzie concurred, “It’s obviously very special to me. Not only is it great fun, it helps me evolve as an official myself. They both inspire my game lots. I have done around 10-15 games with my grandpa in the past and maybe only a handful with my brother. All three of us skated for the first time last year at minor hockey week.”
When asked how they handle criticism on the ice, Mackenzie had this to say.
“I try to understand (it) from the players/coaches perspective. They are trying their hardest effort into winning which sometimes make them see the refs as an obstacle or even their opponent. Realizing this and not taking it personal is essential.”
Brody added, “Ultimately you try to treat disrespect with respect, and try to teach or coach the players certain rules and how a play would fall under that set of rules. The best way to handle criticism is most definitely having great communication skills when explaining a call, but also being understanding of players’ or coaches’ concerns as well. That’s how we grow as officials.”
Bob’s perspective is a bit more extensive, with these observations:
“There have certainly been a lot of rule changes over the years, and the skill level of some divisions has improved a lot. Intimidation of our young officials improved a bit with the introduction of the ‘Good of the Game,’ but has slipped a bit lately and is still a problem. It’s an emotional game, and the game is often seen differently by every participant. As officials we have a lot to watch for on the ice and often must come to a decision very quickly. Not everyone is going to agree, and that’s okay as long as the disagreement stays respectful.”
mackenzie: The environment that the officials have made with each other, it feels like one big family.
brody: The biggest reason why I love officiating is definitely the people. I love going out to the rink with close friends I’ve made over the years and being teammates on the ice, much like the players. We can spend a lot of time together from doing a game, being on the road, or even flying together, so the brotherhood and the friendships I’ve developed definitely make me love officiating more.
bob: I enjoy still being able to be a part of the game and seeing the game from a different perspective, but most of all, I really enjoy watching and helping some very fine young men and women develop into amazing officials and even more amazing individuals.
What advice or comments would they want to share with parents and coaches involved in minor hockey?
mackenzie: At the heart, hockey is for the players, so make it as enjoyable and fun as possible for them for the time they play the sport.
alberta hockey hall of fame inductee:
Bob Broomhall is the man behind the scenes for officiating in both North West Edmonton and in the Edmonton Federation Hockey League. He is the technical person for the two assigning platforms used in Edmonton and he serves as a liaison person between the referee groups and one of the companies providing a referee assigning platform. When there are technical problems, Bob gets the needed answers. In addition to his technical duties, Bob also acts as a clearing centre on the referees' side for the multitude of game changes that occur in the EFHL's Edmonton schedule during the season. In North West Edmonton, Bob is the referee assignor for two-person U13 and U15 EFHL games. Bob organizes the supervision program in North West Edmonton as well as playing a large role in North West Edmonton's mini-clinics and U11 Shadow programs. Finally, he also finds time to squeeze a few games as an on-ice referee into his busy schedule.
Grandson Brody McGrath began officiating over a decade ago in North West Edmonton. Brody had a real aptitude for officiating, and with some help from Dennis Arski, he quickly gained valuable on-ice experience to complement his skating skills. The Western Hockey League took notice and Brody has been a regular referee in the WHL for several seasons.
brody: Hockey is a fun sport to everyone involved, including the officials. As much as the kids are competing, so are we when it comes to rankings, tournaments, playoffs, and moving on into higher categories of hockey. Mistakes are going to happen with players, coaches, and officials. Our goal is to ensure the game is played safe as well as fair. But ultimately we’re there to make sure everyone’s having fun, including ourselves, otherwise no one would do our job. Respect the officials – they are there to do a job not everyone can lace up skates for.
bob: I think the basic message I would like to leave parents and coaches is that just like the players, our young officials are learning every game. They are going to make mistakes. When adults start criticizing them, they may think they are trying to be helpful, but young officials don’t see it as helpful, they see it as intimidating. We have supervisors and mentors that see these young officials regularly and they are the best ones to help them.
Other grandson Mackenzie Way has a great attitude. He is currently in his second year as an Elite stream official and he should have many opportunities ahead of him. As well, Mackenzie continues to take assignments in North West Edmonton's EFHL program. In addition to his on-ice work, Mackenzie supervises less experienced officials, helping them to improve their officiating skills. As a family, Bob, Brody and Mackenzie contribute in a big way to officiating in the Edmonton area.
Inmid-February,I posted (on Twitter) a simple illustration showing the location of Zach Hyman’s goals this season (32 at the time). I updated the illustration a few weeks later (at press time), when Zach hit 40 goals for the season. The diagram did not change much, but the response on twitter was over the top. The two tweets generated over 750,000 views from people across Canada, and also from the U.S. and Europe (including one tweet from Sweden, which translated to “that’s a very sexy illustration).
My tweet provided little context, so it was very interesting to see the comments/responses and interpretations. Most hockey fans understood the illustration to be complimentary to Hyman’s position on most of his goals (in the crease), that it takes a lot of qualities to score goals in the “dirty areas,” including grit, determination, strength, smarts, and incredible hand-eye coordination.
Meanwhile, a small number of detractors (usually fans of other teams), considered my illustration as “evidence” that somehow diminished the value of Hyman’s goals. The most common negative response was that Hyman’s goals were the sole benefit of playing with Connor McDavid (“McDavid merchant”,) or they were mostly power play goals. (They’re not. At the time of press, Hyman was second overall in evenstrength goals, with 28 goals scored at even strength and only 12 scored on the power play.
As for net position, that “Hyman just sets up camp in front of the net,” it’s not quite that simple. When looking at Hyman’s goals scored at or near the crease, he usually resides in that position for less than one or two seconds. (Or he’s driving the net.) It’s what he does before he gets to the net, which is almost as impressive as his ability to score goals. When you
watch the play leading up to his goals, he’s always moving and reading the play. Usually four to five seconds before he scores, he’s nowhere near the net and as he sees the play develop, he anticipates the next one or two passes, and then puts himself in front of the net. It’s really hard to defend, and it’s not easy to do.
Getting back to the number of goals directly assisted by McDavid, it works out to less than half. Here’s a breakdown of the primary assists:
Connor McDavid: 17
Leon Draisaitl: 6
Evan Bouchard: 6
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins: 4
Others (3): 7
This works out to less than 50 percent of Hyman’s goals (42.5percent), where McDavid provided the primary assist, and 58.5 percent, where either McDavid or Draisaitl provided the primary assist
Recognizing most of the negative feedback came from identifiable Leafs fans, many who probably regretted the Leafs not re-signing Hyman 3 years ago. For their context, here’s a breakdown of primary assists with Auston Matthews’ 53 goals (at press time):
Mitch Marner: 23
William Nylander: 13
Matthew Knies: 4
Morgan Rielly: 3
Others (10): 10
In Matthews case, 43.4 percent of his goals were primarily assisted by Mitch Marner, but more noticeably, 36 of his 53 goals (68 percent) were the direct benefit of playing with Marner and Nylander.
This should not take anything away from the fact Matthews is the top goal scorer this season and it should not take away that Hyman is up there too. (At press time, 2nd in the NHL.) And while Hyman definitely benefits by playing with the best player in the game, Matthews plays with Marner and Nylander, who rank as top 10 players in the NHL.
All of the top goal scorers play with talented wingers/forwards, but the most elite goal scorers have the talent, mindset, and ability to get into scoring positions and capitalize on their opportunities. Matthews does this from a variety of areas on the ice (usually top of the slot), while Hyman has his own office location.
Hard days are the best because that’s when CHAMPIONS are made.
On Wednesday, December 27th 2023, the third annual Tyler Palmowski Memorial Cup took place at Clareview Community Recreation Centre. This tournament is to honour Tyler’s brave battle with cancer and to raise awareness about DIPG - diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma.
In 2015, at the age of 8, Tyler Palmowski was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a brain tumour. After undergoing multiple tests, procedures and surgeries, he was able to successfully beat cancer and start enjoying his childhood again.
Then in March of 2020, at the age of 12, Tyler was diagnosed with DIPG. DIPG is a terminal childhood brain cancer with an average life expectancy of only nine months.
There are no new treatments or cure for this type of tumour and it still has a zero percent survival rate. When the Palmowski’s received this devastating news, they were told to go home and make memories with their son.
Tyler passed away November 24, 2020 at only 13 years old.
Tyler was an old soul. You could sit down with him and have a very intellectual conversation. He did well in school and loved all of his friends. He believed so strongly that everyone deserves to be included and treated with respect. Tyler touched so many people during his short 13-year life. His brother and sister look at him as a role model and continue to carry his legacy. Tyler’s life was one of strength, perseverance and faith. His bravery showed the world, you can do anything you put your mind to and while you do that, you can bring so much good into this world while facing so many hardships.
Tyler had a love for fishing, airplanes and flying. He also had a passion for hockey. He started playing when he was 5 years old and continued playing after his first battle with cancer, even after re-learning how to walk and skate. He was determined to get back on the ice as quick as he could.
One year after Tyler’s passing, the Braves Junior C hockey team hosted the first Tyler Palmowski Memorial Cup. Rob Ballantyne, head coach of the Brave’s Junior C hockey team, wanted to start something special for the Palmowski family and their incredible son who lived for hockey.
This year’s tournament raised $2600, and the Braves Athletic Club donated a portion of their tournament profits in the amount of $2500 as well.
If you wish to donate, scan the QR code here!
This money will go toward much needed DIPG research, in hopes of saving children diagnosed with this type of brain cancer, in hopes of saving children like Tyler.

It’s hard enough for one family member to win Gold at Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week, but for two siblings to win in consecutive years is a rare feat.
At last year’s event, Mikey Williamson won Gold in the U13 division, and this year, his younger brother Eric won Gold.
Hockey is truly a family affair, as their Dad, Jesse Williamson, who was the assistant coach of last year’s Gold Medal winning team, and the head coach for this year’s U11 team. Williamson puts in countless hours as a volunteer coach, and no surprise to see that he’s 9-year-old Eric’s role model. Eric’s team won gold this year, and he was chosen as captain for the big game. And he led by example, scoring the first and last goal in the big game.
As his proud mom (April) told us, “Eric was so determined to win that day. He woke up and asked if he could throw his gloves and stick up in the air when they win like his brother did last year. Earlier in the season, he fractured his elbow missing a solid six weeks of hockey and just returned on Dec 9th and only had six weeks of play before Minor Hockey. He didn’t skip a beat! Eric basically grew up in the arena because of Mikey’s hockey schedule and wanted skates as soon as he could walk.”
