GOLD MEDAL WINNING TEAMS FROM QUIKCARD EDMONTON MINOR HOCKEY WEEK 2025

Message From The Publisher

WelcometoourfinaleditionoftheHockeyEdmontonMagazine for the 2024-25 season.

In this issue, we are featuring the 63 gold medal winning teams from 2025 Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week (QEMHW.) Additionally, we have included a number of “spotlights” on players who won gold medals this year.

We have also included a wonderful montage of photos taken at QEMHW, including photos taken at the U9 Outdoor Games which took place at Cattail Crossing. Thanks to MVP Team Photos for these great photos!

We also have a special feature on the three Wayne Gretzky Award winners. This award is given annually to a participant in the EFHL, Elite and Junior programs, players who exhibit sportsmanship, scholastic achievement, and community involvement.

Wrapping things up, we have a special feature on the Hockey Assist Program offered through KidSport Edmonton. This program goes a long way to helping families put their kids in hockey, helping out with fees, and also, getting them equipped to play.

With the hockey season winding down, we would like to wish everyone the best of luck in playoffs, or any other special tournaments. Have a great spring/summer, and see you back in the rinks in the fall!

WAYNE GRETZKY Award Winners

2025

Hockey Edmonton and all the member organizations take pride in helping to develop character both on and off the ice. Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week takes that philosophy forward by recognizing three wellrounded athletes who make an impact in the community with Wayne Gretzky Awards. In addition to the honour, Wayne Gretzky Award recipients receive $750 from ATB Financial.

Tyler Crossen

EFHL WINNER

Tyler (left), a proud Métis student from St. Francis Xavier High School, has demonstrated tremendous perseverance and dedication both in hockey and his community. With dreams of becoming a paramedic or firefighter, Tyler has already taken steps through the Fire Cadets program to make that a reality. He’s an active volunteer, from supporting Cheryl’s Run and Hair Massacure to organizing backpack drives for the homeless. His commitment to academic success and community impact is remarkable, as is his love for hockey and its ability to bring people together.

Aryan Kahera JUNIOR WINNER

Brady Park

ELITE WINNER

Brady (middle) is not just an assistant captain of the KC Spurs U16 AA but a true ambassador of the game. From winning championships at the Las Vegas Jr. Knights Fall Classic to earning individual accolades like the EBIT Tournament scoring title and scholarship, Brady exemplifies excellence on the ice. Beyond hockey, his dedication extends to swimming, volunteering with Hockey HEROS, and community service initiatives like the Holiday Hamper Program and Edmonton Food Bank. Brady’s passion for giving back is inspiring, whether he’s helping young players find their joy on the ice or delivering smiles and support to families in need.

Aryan (right) is an engineering student at the University of Alberta, and has a passion for hockey that has spanned 14 years as a player, referee, and coach. His commitment to the sport goes hand-in-hand with his dedication to helping others. Whether he’s volunteering with Holiday Hampers, the Edmonton Food Bank, Hope Mission, or Heros Hockey, Aryan balances his academic pursuits with a strong sense of community service, showing us all the power of giving back.

KIDSPORT CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF SUPPORTING KIDS IN SPORT

KidSport recognizes and understands the physical, psychological and social benefits of organized sport. KidSport is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance for eligible youth 18-and-under, in an effort to get them in the game, or games. “One of the barriers, as we know in all sport, is funding,” said Barry who also worked with Hockey Canada and Canada Soccer. “Administratively, KidSport helps with the registration fee. So, there’s that support system that people, families, parents can go and have that taken care of.”

The initiative originated with Sport BC in 1993. “The KidSport program helped create equal access to sport by subsidizing registration fees,” said Graeme Dickson, the Events and Communications Manager for KidSport Edmonton. “It was adopted nationally by the Canadian Council of Provincial and Territorial Sports Federations, and in 1995, KidSport opened its doors in Alberta. We’re celebrating 30 years and it’s been growing.”

In 2023, KidSport assisted over 40,000 young athletes across the country through the “So All Kids Can Play” grant program. That added up to over $12.6-million in subsidized sport registration fees. Last year, KidSport Edmonton registered some 4,300 athletes, or $1.25-million in sport fees. “We helped kids get into over 40 different sports,” said Dickson, who’s one of three full-time employees and four part-time staffers at the Edmonton office. “We’ve helped kids register in nearly 70 different sports through the years, partnering with over 500 different Edmonton sport clubs.”

If you’ve ever participated in organized sport, particularly as a youth – in any sport, at any level, for any length of time, you’ve already experienced

the many benefits it provides. Physical fitness is obviously one of the advantages. But there’s so much more. Including psychological and social gains.

Taryn Barry is a PHD Candidate in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation. Barry’s area of research is Sport Management. According to the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute, 68 percent of all Canadian youth were physically active in 2022. “Research shows what sport does for a person. Individual self-esteem and confidence. There’s a lot that impacts the rest of your life and your quality of life.”

Jeff Vela is one such athlete who benefitted from KidSport. “I was born and raised in Calgary. I was raised by a single mother and there were five of us kids. We lived below the poverty line, so money was always tight. There were really no options for things like sport and recreation. I was seven or eight when I first heard of KidSport. It was so exciting. That turned me into playing soccer and then soccer transitioned into football where that really took off for me.”

Did it ever. Vela, who’s 33 now, starred at the high school football level. His accomplishments on the field eventually led to a football scholarship at the University of Alberta, where he earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Physiotherapy. Vela credits KidSport with creating opportunities and in turn, success. “If it weren’t for that, I would not have gone to university. And then that football scholarship really opened up the door for me. I was able to get into the Master of Science and Physiotherapy program and doing my Doctorate. KidSport essentially paved the way.”

Sport also has the ability to generate life-long friendships and teach life lessons. Dickson grew up playing high level soccer. The 38-yearold continues to play and officiate the beautiful game. “I still have friends from when I was a kid. For a lot of young kids growing up and developing friendships, developing personal skills and so much more than the physical qualities and benefits, sport brings so much more.”

Barry was a student-athlete at the U of A where she enjoyed a five-year hockey career with the Pandas. “There are a lot of impacts that come from sport. Research has shown that participating in sport may lead to higher academic success. There are other positive effects. You’re better at communicating with people and your peers and you develop social skills you may not have if you didn’t play a sport.”

The process to apply for a KidSport Edmonton grant goes something like this. First, applicants need to confirm they live in Edmonton. Then, the application must include a Canada Child Benefit Notice and Sport Program Registration Receipt.

The KidSport Edmonton team receives hundreds of applications per month. “We want our program to be streamlined. As simple and efficient

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY GRAEME DICKSON
JEFF VELA CREDITS KIDSPORT FOR THE OPPORTUNITES, AND SUCCESS, HE RECEIVED FROM PLAYING SPORTS.

as it could be. So, we have a one-page application form people can fill out online or the old-fashioned paper way,” said Dickson.

In March of 2024, the Alberta Government committed $8-million in funding over the following two years, which is divided among the provincial chapters. There are other KidSport chapters throughout the province. “Edmonton and Calgary are the biggest chapters, and are staffed. However, there are over 30 other volunteer led chapters, serving their communities,” said Dickson who talked about an unfortunate lack of volunteers outside major centres. “If the chapter doesn’t have enough volunteers to run it anymore, the provincial chapter absorbs that area to ensure every kid in Alberta can access KidSport funding.” Volunteers are always a necessity. Regardless of the region. And so are donations. “We’re always looking for monthly donors to increase our donor impact. We also have corporate partners.”

KidSport doesn’t discriminate or segregate. “We do work with a lot of new Canadians where English isn’t their first language,” said Dickson who saw KISS 91.7 FM help raise $54,000 for KidSport Edmonton last year. And KidSport gives athletes with limitations, the ability to participate and compete in organized sport. “In 2023 we helped over 70 athletes with a disability. That’s a good number. We help anyone like para-athletes.”

Now try to imagine life without sport or KidSport. Vela said he simply can’t. “I feel like the work ethic that I have now was really developed in sport. I don’t think I’d have the confidence or the ability to be a leader without the trials and tribulations you go through in sport. Having a sense of community played into that confidence too.”

“The most important part of sport is the community aspect,” said Barry. “That all people have access to it. We have to make sure these kids can continue to play into their adulthood.” Dickson echoed those sentiments. “I don’t know where I would have gone as a youth if it wasn’t for sport. I don’t think I could live without it. It’s a massive part of my life. I don’t know if I’d have the friendships that I have. So then you understand the importance of KidSport.”

KidSport is a charitable organization that envisions a Canada where all children have the opportunity to play. And develop. And grow. And learn. And lead. And laugh. 30 years of those success stories is certainly worth celebrating. If you’d like more information on KidSport, or want to find out how you can help, visit KidSport Edmonton online. kidsportcanada.ca/alberta/edmonton. So all kids can play.

QUIKCARD EDMONTON MINOR HOCKEY WEEK U9 POND HOCKEY Highlights from

As part of Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week 2025, U9 players took to the ice, outdoor pond hockey style. During the weekend of January 11, U9 minor hockey teams played 74 games on 20 mini outdoor rinks at Cattail Crossing Golf Course. The event was pure hockey nostalgia, with scenic ice pathways and snowbanks between rinks and bundled families enjoying hot chocolate while they watched their children play. It was all about embracing the spirit of hockey and creating unforgettable memories in a magical winter setting. Shown here are some photos from the event, which truly capture the essence of hockey.

Thank you!

Together we raised more than $574,000* at the 14th Annual Stollery Family Day Classic – scoring a total of $5.3 million since 2011!

The four-day, four-on-four invitational tournament is about kids playing the game they love, having fun and giving back in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Hockey Edmonton. Proceeds will support important family-centered care programs, making a hospital stay a little easier on Stollery kids and their families.

Thank you to Steve Serdachny, the Stollery Family Day Classic organizing committee and the many volunteers, participants, sponsors and donors who make this event possible!
