Welcome to Disgraced! We’re very proud to present this provocative, incredibly crafted production that took Toronto by storm last season. This Pulitzer Prizewinning play is everything I think good theatre should be – smart and spiky writing that asks tough questions about faith, race relationships, and the responsibilities inherent in creating art. This is the kind of great play that will leave you deliberating and discussing long after it’s finished. A big welcome to the incredible cast, and whole team from Hope and Hell Theatre Company. This is a great production of a stellar script, and an important conversation for us all to have. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family, and for supporting live theatre in Edmonton. Enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PS - Next up in our season is the all-singing, all-dancing, all-Gershwin musical, Crazy for You! It plays March 4-26 in the Shoctor Theatre. It is an incredibly fun night out, filled with all kinds of songs you know and love, like: I Got Rhythm and Someone to Watch Over Me. I hope you’ll join us!

Students Club

The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and therefore we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. Prior to the first three Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of each of our main stage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Disgraced, the students enjoyed an interactive workshop on film acting with Katrina Beatty, Production Manager for FAVA. Katrina earned a BFA in Film Production from Montreal’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. She recently co-produced the made-for-TV movie I Think I Do – which has been sold all over the world. Katrina was selected as one of eight directors for the Women in the Director’s Chair program at the Banff Centre for Katrina Beatty the Arts. She has also directed multiple music videos including Nightlife, which won the Edmonton Music Award for 2015 Best Music Video and was nominated for a 2015 Rosie Award. Most recently, Katrina received four Rosie nominations from the Alberta Media Industry Association for her short film Lift, which is currently touring the festival circuit. Through the workshop the students were able to learn the basics of acting for the camera and the difference between acting onstage and on film. They now better understand how to maintain the integrity of a story while focusing and filtering their own creative choices for a new performance medium.

For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact Shirley Tran at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

notes Disgraced

has the power to make us uncomfortable. And that is a rare and special thing in the theatre. Often, plays move us, sometimes in ways that surprise us, but the laughter or tears feel cathartic. Those emotions are a welcome release. Disgraced, however, can feel like a challenge. “I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel,” was my initial reaction to the piece. And I believe that kind of provocation in art is rare and deeply valuable. This play has the power to challenge our assumptions, and the discomfort it creates is important. Ayad Akhtar is exploring his cultural and religious background as a Muslim. But he is really asking broader questions about tribalism in modern society. As educated and progressive members of the modern world, we can feel like strong individuals who have moved beyond tribal prejudices and loyalties. In Disgraced, we meet a group of successful and affluent people who we confidently believe are not defined by the colour of their skin or their parents’ religion or nationality. But are they (and perhaps we?) more bound by these loyalties than we realize and would like to admit? Is there a tension between the individual and the group identity? As much as we hope as a society to overcome our divisions and differences, are the politics of identity inescapable? Disgraced calls us to this discussion, and it is an urgent discussion we ignore at our peril. — Robert Ross Parker

became the only popular American composer to have made “aHelasting dent in the granitic facade of classical music. ” Young Jacob was big into sports but, one day in his 10th year, his parents decided that brother Israel should better himself and take music lessons. They bought a piano and installed it in their second floor home at 242 Snediker Ave. An excited Jacob ran to the instrument and played, completely by ear, a popular piece he had heard the day before. He’d never had a lesson. His parents were surprised. Israel was relieved.

By the age of 15, Jacob left home and found work as a Tin Pan Alley song plugger, a profession peculiar to the times when recordings were of very poor quality and piano players or vocalists were employed to perform a composer’s new songs anywhere people gathered – barbershops, department stores, street corners. He earned $15 a week, which he supplemented by making piano rolls for the popular self-playing instruments of the day. He wrote some songs of his own as well. Inspired by Stephen Foster’s The Old Folks at Home, and with the help of lyricist Irving Caesar, the kid from the New York slums who had never been south of Jersey, wrote a heartfelt ditty of a displaced Southern boy who longed to return to his home in Dixie. He penned it in 10 minutes, he later claimed, one afternoon on a bus ride home for the night. “The birds are singin’. The banjo’s strummin’,” he wrote.

In 1919, Jacob Gershwine (now George Gershwin) sang it at a party where neighbourhood buddy Asa Yoleson (now big vaudeville star Al Jolson) heard him and incorporated it into his act. George was 20 years old and Swannee, with Jolson’s help, became the biggest hit of his career, selling a million sheet music copies and financing Gershwin’s course for the rest of his life. Freed from the grind of furnishing hit songs for radio, Gershwin turned to Broadway and the movies. Turned out that brother Ira (Israel) was a talented lyricist and the two of them collaborated on the Broadway shows Show Girl, Girl Crazy, I Got Rhythm and Of Thee I Sing, which went on to win a Pulitzer Prize. In the movies, he wrote for Astaire and Rogers. And the hits just kept on coming: Love is Here to Stay, A Foggy Day. Nice Work If You Can Get it, Fascinatin’ Rhythm, The Man I Love, S’wonderful, Summertime, A Foggy Day, Love Is Sweeping the Country. His music was played all the time and everywhere. Jazz musicians viewed I Got Rhythm as a seminal work whose harmonic progressions supported as much jazz improvisation as the blues. With An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue and his oft produced opera Porgy and Bess, wrote David Schiff in The Atlantic, “He became the only popular American composer to have made a lasting dent in the granitic facade of classical music. His classical compositions had a life on the pop charts and the pop music has, in turn, been enriched by the harmonic sophistication and expressive complexity of his classical works.”

“And so it worked out. It was a real labour of love.” There is a story that Gershwin once went to Ravel and asked him for lessons in composition. Ravel is famously quoted as observing, “Why should you be second rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?” Gershwin died much too soon of a brain tumour in the early hours of July 11, 1937. He was 38 years old. But, of course, his music went on. In 1986, American playwright and director Ken Ludwig had a hit on his hands. In London’s Gielgud Theatre, his Lend Me A Tenor was convulsing audiences on its way to a long and successful run in North America. Meanwhile back in New York, Broadway producers Roger Horchow and Elizabeth Williams, noting the continuing success of the music of the brothers Gershwin, secured the rights to one of their earlier shows, Girl Crazy. Because of Ludwig’s comic smash, they came to him to adapt the original. Remembers Ludwig, “Musicals in those days were very different. With respect to the authors who are long gone, it didn’t hold together or make sense for audiences today.

It had a lot of stereotypes that we would find repugnant; it had not much of a storyline, a very thin little thread. It was like a lot of little sketches and then a great song.” Ludwig declined but the producers allowed him to try and write a whole new musical from scratch. The delighted playwright immersed himself in the Gershwins. “I must have the biggest selection of Gershwin CDs in the world,” he chuckles. He haunted archives and museums. He found Naughty Baby in a Maureen McGovern album and others on the famous Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald Gershwin collection. He located director Mike Ockrent, who helped him with his dramatic and comic smarts and the two found the then unknown (moreor-less) choreographer Susan Stroman (who went on to create much of The Producers). “I wrote it very quickly – they came to me in December 1991 and I had the first draft by March 1992. We did a workshop and everyone was really happy with it and so they scheduled rehearsals for summer. Lo and behold, we had quite a success.” I guess. It played for years on Broadway, winning three Tony Awards including Best Musical, and then it went to England where it won two Oliver Awards. “And so it worked out. It was a real labour of love.” Ludwig stitched together bits and pieces of every old stage and movie musical you’ve ever seen. It begins on the New York stage where Bobby Child, the singing/dancing son of a wealthy New York family is performing. The show features callow producers and Broadway

Babies, mistaken identities and production numbers. And then it switches to Deadrock, Nevada, where Bobby meets laconic cowboys, the spunky Polly Baker and inherits The Gaiety, a failing local theatre. Will Bobby win the stubborn Polly, will a group of chorus girls show up in dusty Deadrock and will they all (including the cowboys who, surprisingly, also sing and dance) get together to put on a show? Did Fred Astaire ever dance on a ceiling? I was in New York in 1992, and had an afternoon off, so I decided to drop in and see what was creating all the fuss. The show certainly lived up to its hype – charming, tuneful, funny and filled with enough nostalgia to power a decade of Busby Berkley musicals. I was particularly struck with leading man Harry Groener. Groener is an old Broadway hand having appeared in Spamalot, Sunday in the Park With George and Cats – among many others. He’s a song and dance man in the Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Gower Champion tradition – good looking, blessed with a pleasant light tenor, a great sense of timing and a rubber body that seems unmoored to any bone structure. Groener secured a Tony nomination for his role. I was reminded of Groener when we saw Edmonton actor Andrew MacDonald-Smith as Bert in his Sterling Award winning performance in the Citadel’s Mary Poppins. He has all the same attributes combined with a winning, accessible stage presence. It’s hard to imagine anyone who would be better to strap on Groener’s tap shoes and assume the role of Bobby. The Citadel acceded to the obvious and indeed MacDonald-Smith will star in their upcoming production of Crazy for You. MacDonald-Smith ruefully observes about the tap heavy show, “I actually didn’t know a lot about Crazy For You but when I started going over it with the director I immediately knew that this was a role for me – but I’ll certainly have to brush up on my tapping!” The rest of the cast is a blue ribbon troupe, a who’s who of local talent including John Ullyatt, Susan Gilmour, Rachel Bowron and Jesse Gervais. The show will be directed by Stratford vet and two-time Tyrone Guthrie award winner, director/choreographer Dayna Tekatch. The show features such Gershwin brothers hits as Bidin’ My Time, I Can’t Be Bothered Now, Someone to Watch Over Me, Shall We Dance?, Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm and many more. Crazy for You spills joyously onto the Shoctor stage of the Citadel on March 4 and runs through March 26.
