THE RICK HANSEN STORY The true story of one man’s journey that would alter a life and unite a nation

Who is Rick Hansen?

At the age of 15, Rick Hansen sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) in a car crash. Paralyzed from the waist down, he slowly came to terms with how to deal with his new life, setting new goals from new dreams. After months of rehabilitation, Rick returned to his first passion: sports. Fuelled by his mantra ‘anything is possible’, he went on to win 19 international wheelchair marathons, including six medals as a Paralympian. Inspired by the dream of a world accessible and inclusive for all, and a passion to make a difference in the lives of others, Rick set out on a journey, his legendary Man In Motion World Tour, on March 21, 1985. Rick wheeled more than 40,000km through 34 countries, raising $26 million for SCI research and quality of life programs. More importantly was the collective shift in consciousness in the belief of the potential of people with disabilities when barriers are removed. This inspiring play takes audiences back to the beginning of this remarkable man’s story: teenage friends on a camping trip in Williams Lake, B.C. and the moments, big and small, leading up to a life-altering event.

A

Christmas Carol is an allegory for the perils of capitalism and the human potential for redemption. The text is composed around the three parables (a short allegory that teaches a moral lesson) presented to Ebenezer Scrooge of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Each parable teaches its own lesson to the character of Scrooge; the combination of the three stories leads Scrooge to recognize the error of his greedy and selfish ways, and he embraces the spirit of Christmas by generously reaching out to those around him. Dickens divided the book into a series of five “staves” – a musical term which designates a stanza consistent in theme and/or mood rather than chapters. Traditionally, scholars attribute the title and organization of the book to Dickens desire to create a story that would be as joyous and repeated to a listener/reader as would carols at Christmas. Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol on December 17, 1843. Initially he began writing the novella in hopes of creating a best-seller to provide a much needed influx of money to pay off his debts. However, by the time he completed the story Dickens wanted to make the text affordable so everyone could purchase it. Following an argument with his publishers, Dickens actually financed the printing of the book himself. He insisted that the book have lavish bindings, gilt edges and hand-coloured illustrations (created by John Leech) which were highly unusual demands for a mass produced book. To ensure accessibility, Dickens even went so far as to set the price of the novella at an astonishingly low price of five shillings. The book sold over six thousand copies in a week, and while it didn’t yield great financial gain for Dickens, it did catapult his book into the centre of Christmas celebrations in the United Kingdom and around the world. Since its publication in 1843, A Christmas Carol has sold millions of copies and inspired countless adaptations. The poverty and hardship Dickens depicts in A Christmas Carol were especially poignant for Londoners in Victorian England due to their own living and working conditions. In the midst of the Industrial Revolution the population of London grew to almost four times its former size, with the majority of these migrants living in extreme poverty. The precarious situation of poor children in society is a recurring theme in Dickens’ writing. In the 1840s there were countless children living in horrific conditions; many were forced into factory work before the age of ten, spending up to twelve hours a day at manual labour. Dickens himself was well acquainted with child slave labour: at the age of twelve he was forced to work at Warren’s Blacking Factory after his father was sent to debtor’s prison. Thus, the tale of the loving father Bob Cratchit, struggling to support his family and to create a memorable Christmas in spite of having no money, would have resonated in the hearts of many. The Cratchit family’s struggles are amplified by the fact that they cannot afford to have Tiny Tim medically treated. Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim’s unwavering optimism in the face of adversity serves as a point of hope and teaches Ebenezer Scrooge the true meaning of Christmas. Throughout his life Charles Dickens crusaded to help the poor, especially impoverished children. Beyond the entertainment value of A Christmas Carol, it can also be credited with culturally instilling a spirit of charity and giving during the Festive Season. The redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge and his transition from a greedy wretch to a giving, socially minded individual spurred an outpouring of charity in the 1840s which continues today. As Dickens suggests, the meaning of Christmas is to be found in the spirit of giving, surrounded by those you love.

Merry Christmas, Everyone. 20

WRITING A CAKE

riting a play is a lot more complicated and involved than writing a novel or painting a picture. A novel or painting is like, let’s say, describing or depicting a cake. Once you’ve completed the descriptive task – the writing or painting of it – the creation then exists exactly as you have created it. Writing a play is more like writing the recipe for this “cake”. The playwright can select the ingredients and describe how he believes they should be combined and what sort of chemical reactions he believes are crucial to produce the type of cake he’s after. But then, if he’s extremely fortunate, he must turn the entire process over to others to actualize his creation: producer, director, designer, composer, scenic artists, actors, stage management, crew. The lines he writes are just the tip of an implied iceberg that he hopes these other artists will interpret. Making a good playwright takes ages. A writer or painter can sit and create his art alone and still bring the thing to fruition. You can’t sit alone in your garret and produce your play. You can write a hundred plays but this does not help you learn. The work of art that is a play, only exists when it is on the stage and inhabited by actors. The playwright may concoct a thousand recipes but will never know if they will communicate what he or she has in mind and heart until they are brought to an audience by other collaborators. The development of Canadian playwrights and new Canadian plays is tremendously important. We are bombarded every waking hour by the news, music, literature, plays, film and television of our big brother to the south. If we want to see ourselves, our stories, or even our take on world stories on Canadian and Edmonton stages we must begin by supporting and encouraging our playwrights. If my adaptation of A Christmas Carol had not been given a chance, it would still be a seventy page recipe sitting on my shelf. But because of the Citadel’s support for new works, it has existed on the Maclab stage for eleven seasons and in the hearts and minds of thousands of Edmontonians. Please support New Play Development by calling Sydney Stuart at 780-428-2142. Tom Wood Playwright/Actor/Director

e in the prop shop at the Citadel have worked together a long time. We all take ownership of the department and the responsibilities are evenly divided. When a play is chosen for our season, the director and designer meet and a prop list is created and then given to Jim Meers, Head of Props. He meets with the designer and discussions take place that determine what will need to be built, purchased or pulled from our stock. We discuss and cost the prop list, then meet with the designer and make any necessary revisions. The list is then approved and taking the costing into account, a schedule of work is determined. All plays present problem solving opportunities. Notable challenges for us were building a goat for the play The Goat or Who is Sylvia? and Morty, the 16 foot tall Ghost of Christmas Future, which you will see tonight. A significant part of the challenge was to work out how to get him offstage quickly and smoothly. A Christmas Carol is the show that we are most pleased with. When the show was built in 1999 it was expected to run for 5 years and now 11 years later we are still proud of the props. Colin MacLean Colin MacLean is the dean of Edmonton theatre reviewers. In 2007, Colin was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton at the Sterling Awards.

Jonathan Christenson is buzzed. He arrived the night before from New York where his production of Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe, saw its premiere at the fabled Victory Theatre in New York. The sumptuous 499 seat playhouse, described as “being inside a treasure chest” by Newsday, was built in 1902 by Oscar Hammerstein and has been home to George Arliss, Tyrone Power, Mary Pickford and Lillian Gish. It is located at the corner of 42nd street and Times Square.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean When Christenson left New York, his musical play had been running for a week and was sold out for every performance. And what was the reaction of the notoriously crabby NY critics? “I don’t know,” said the composer/playwright/ director. “I take seriously what people say about my work and sometimes you’ll get a review that thoughtfully talks about a production but, when we get a bad one, the words just go round and round in my head. I finally decided I just don’t want that happening anymore so I just don’t read them.” Well then, as a public service, let me point out to Christenson, and to you, gentle reader, that the reviewers have been as enthusiastic as the audiences that rise to their feet in a standing ovation each night. Said the Times, “It’s hard to look away from this grimly purposeful account of a haunted life lived in the shadow of death.” Well-known arts blogger Robert Berg observed, “Nevermore is that rare musical that has the power to inspire one’s blood to run cold, even as it dazzles with its ingenuity, wit, imagination and macabre charm.” And while I’m at it, when Nevermore played the Barbican in London last July, the “Londonist” called it a “masterpiece.”

“...There is something about those periods the Romantic and the Gothic - I really love.

They were interested in the large life experiences. They took everything to the extreme. We tend to live ordinary lives today, we express ourselves in a very narrow range, yet inside we all have these opera scale feelings. Victor Hugo was all about that.”

Nevermore and Christenson’s eerie production of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein are the first of a triumvirate of plays based on great romantic/gothic themes. The third, commissioned by the Citadel and produced by Christenson’s Catalyst Theatre (and coming up on March 5th), will be Hunchback, a take on the famous Victor Hugo novel. Actually, Notre Dame de Paris (as Hugo originally called his sweeping story), has been rattling around in Christenson’s brain for a long time. “My mother tells me that when I was a very small child she used to read me from the book to put me to sleep,” he laughs. “I don’t remember it but perhaps she planted the seeds. There is something about those periods – the Romantic and the Gothic – I really love. They were interested in the large life experiences. They took everything to the extreme. We tend to live ordinary lives today, we express ourselves in a very narrow range, yet inside we all have these opera scale feelings. Victor Hugo was all about that.” There have been many attempts to stage Hugo’s expansive tale – 11 movies, numerous television programs, operas, ballets, a Disneyfied animated version. Christenson goes back to the original work observing that many of the versions miss Hugo’s depth of expression. (Although I should point out that the great author himself wrote a libretto for an opera – and tacked on a happy ending.) At the centre of the novel, are three characters: Quasimodo the deformed bell ringer, Claude Frollo, the man of the church who becomes obsessed with Esmerelda, the bubbly and innocent gypsy.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean “It is actually the story of Frollo (the Archdeacon of the Cathedral who takes in the hideously misshapen baby left on the steps of the church) that attracted me,” says Christenson. “Like most people I had come to think of him as the villain of the story and that it was all about Quasimodo. But Frollo starts off a good man. All of his impulses are to do good. He lived a very sheltered life, he had a plan in place and he was very controlled about it. But one day his passions are awakened and his life is thrown into chaos.” (Frollo sees the beautiful Esmerelda and, for the first time, feels mortal love. Well, let’s face it – lust.) “He has no facility to cope with the experience and is driven by his uncontrolled passion to do terrible things.”

It all begins with Christenson’s original inspiration. He writes the book, composes the music and holds the production closely to his vision. I was fortunate to see a workshop of Hunchback, and I can tell you that watching the scene where the innocent and defenceless Quasimodo (played by Ron Pederson) is whipped in the public square was a wrenching experience – even in an early and rather disjointed production composed mostly of scenes. There is no doubt where the creative drive behind Catalyst’s arresting productions resides. It all begins with Christenson’s original inspiration. He writes the book, composes the music and holds the production closely to his vision. The company is also known for its intimate collaborations. I can’t recall a review I’ve read that doesn’t mention Bretta Gerecke’s impressive sets, costumes and lighting. “I love working with other people,” says the director.

“I love working with other people,” says the director. “The first thing I do is come to Bretta and start talking about where I see the story and how I’m interested in telling it. Her input further shapes my thinking.” “The first thing I do is come to Bretta and start talking about where I see the story and how I’m interested in telling it. Her input further shapes my thinking.” Laura Krewski is listed as the choreographer but her contribution goes far beyond that. Anyone who has seen any of Catalyst’s recent productions is struck by the stylized actions of the characters. Krewski is able to give her performers signature movements, the turn of a body, a fleeting hand gesture, that nails the essence of what they are and what they are feeling. And then, there are the actors themselves. “I’ve written the characters the way I want them to be but often I completely rethink a character because an actor may be working with a scene and all of a sudden they’ll do something that will open up a sense of ‘Oh, let’s go down that road instead.’ My goal is always that everything on stage should look like no one else could do it better. That every actor is the perfect person to play that part – every design choice perfectly serves the piece and the choreography is completely unified with the rest of the production.” As for Christenson’s music, which a British reviewer suggested “draws upon such greats as Kurt Weill and Jacques Brel – and Kurt Cobain”: “To me music is the fastest way to bypass your head and speak directly to your heart. Music speaks a different language – it can take people to a different place that words alone can’t.”

39

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean “...My goal is always that everything on stage should look like no one else could do it better. ...” So why would a company with such an amazing track record come to the Citadel? Two words: Artistic Director Bob Baker. “I think Bob’s an amazing presence in this city and I love what he’s done at the Citadel,” says Christenson. “He has an unbelievable instinct for what works on a stage. My dialogue with him has been so valuable. His questions are rooted in character and what that character wants or needs. He forces me to be very clear in what I am doing.” And there is another point. The physical limitations of the intimate Catalyst Theatre forces the company to present their plays in a certain manner. Says Christenson, “We present plays of an epic scale. When we see our plays in a bigger space we can’t believe how different the experience is. We play only to 100 people in our home space – whereas when we are on tour we play theatres that range from 500 to 1200 people. We have tens of thousands of people seeing our work whereas we attract only about 1000 in Edmonton.” (The Citadel’s Shoctor Theatre seats 685.) “I try to tell stories that speak to us as to who we are right now,” says Christenson. “I think Hugo has written a very contemporary story and I hope Hunchback will connect with all of us who, like Quasimodo, are struggling to find a life.” Hunchback, a Catalyst Theatre production, commissioned by the Citadel will be premiered on March 5 and will run through March 27th on the mainstage of the Citadel Theatre.

Programming eleven or twelve full-scale theatrical productions each year, including family programming and the cutting-edge Rice series, Mr. Baker has ushered in an era of growth at the Citadel. Last season, Mr. Baker was instrumental in incorporating five of the Citadel’s existing development programs under one umbrella: The Robbins Academy. The Robbins Academy consists of the Eldon and Anne Foote Theatre School, the Citadel Young Companies, The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, ongoing Play Development activities and Audience Outreach, creating Canada’s newest and most comprehensive program for creative development in theatre. Mr. Baker was recently honoured with a University of Alberta Distinguished Alumni Award, is a member of Edmonton’s Cultural Hall of Fame and is a recipient of a PACE award from Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes. Mr. Baker has directed 37 plays for the Citadel and his production of A Christmas Carol has become, for the last ten years, a beloved Edmonton family tradition. He was the artistic director during the successful turn-around of both the Phoenix Theatre in Edmonton (1982-87) and the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto (1990-98). He has won Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards for his direction of Popcorn (2000), Cabaret (2002) and The Pillowman (2007). Later this season, Bob will direct August: Osage County, The Three Musketeers and Little Women the Musical. Mr. Baker is consistently inspired by the dedication and talent of theatre artists and their desire to grow and learn.
