In this edition we salute the champions of Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. Congratulations to all the gold medal winners and to all the athletes. Enjoy the great memories you made! It is hard to believe how fast this past year went. We witnessed changes at Hockey Edmonton, with a full season of the novice modified ice program for all players and our midget AAA program has undergone major changes with retraction from four teams to three. This coming fall we will see a renaming of all our hockey categories to align with Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta. So, thank you to all who worked hard to make these transitions as smooth as possible. As I write this message, we are currently working on changes to our elite stream of hockey which will bring an alignment and balance within the four clubs and will provide a positive hockey experience for all those members. I would like to thank our staff, volunteers, coaches, team managers and officials, without all these people this could not happen. On behalf of the Hockey Edmonton executive, staff and board of directors have an enjoyable and safe summer as we look forward to seeing everyone in the fall.

Message From The Publisher Welcome to our final edition of the Hockey Edmonton Magazine for the 2019-2020 season. This is our Yearbook Edition of the magazine, which features the 57 gold medal winning teams from 2020 Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. Additionally, we have included a number of “spotlights of players who won gold medals during this event. We have also included a montage of photos taken during Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week, and photos submitted for the #CelebrateYEGHockey contest. Lastly, we have a feature article on Matt Benning from the Edmonton Oilers. Benning grew up in Edmonton, played minor hockey in Edmonton, before his two-year stint with the Spruce Grove Saints. Benning shared a few of his early hockey memories with our magazine, including some fond memories of Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. With the hockey season winding down, we would like to wish all the participants a great off-season, and look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice in a few short months!

MATT BENNING STRENGTH ALONG THE BLUE LINE PART OF OILERS’ KEY TO RECENT SUCCESS By Jeremy Freeborn Photos By: Andy Devlin | Oilers Entertainment Group These are exciting times for the Edmonton Oilers. For

most of the decade in the 2010s, the Oilers played meaningless games as fans changed their calendar from one year to the next. Except for an outstanding 2016-17 season when Edmonton finished second in the Pacific Division and reached the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks, there has recently been little for Oilers fans to get enthusiastic about when it came to the success of the team. Yes, Oilers fans have had the opportunity to watch the remarkable skill of Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall and Leon Draisaitl over the last 10 years, but rarely did their performances equate to consistent winning. As the decade turns to the 2020s, Oilers fans have renewed hope. It appears as if Edmonton might, just might, finally have a notable defense that can help them reach the Stanley Cup playoffs this season or contend for a playoff spot. At press time, Edmonton holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, one point up on the Winnipeg Jets.

One of the Oilers’ blueliners in the mix is Edmonton native Matt Benning. Even though two concussions have kept him out for a good part of the 2019-20 season, Benning is a consistent stay-athome defenseman that the Oilers desperately need at this time. Benning is now in his fourth season with the Oilers. To date, he has been a plus player, someone you rarely find in Oilerland. In 229 regular season games, he is actually a +32 and has never been a minus player for a single NHL season. Benning has also showed signs of physicality (225 blocked shots, 121 penalty minutes and 419 hits), along with some offensive skill (14 goals and 44 assists for 58 points). I caught up with Benning on Jan. 10 following the Oilers practice at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome. The 25-yearold is thrilled to be a member of the Oilers and is focused on improving his health so he can make a significant contribution to the Oilers down the stretch.

Hockey Edmonton Magazine | 9

Benning grew up in a hockey family. His father Brian, also an Edmonton native, played 10 NHL seasons with the Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers from 1984 to 1995. He had 63 goals and 233 assists for 296 points in 568 NHL regular season games including one goal and seven assists for eight points in 18 games with the Oilers in 1992-93. Brian Benning also has the distinction of being among the players traded from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh for Oilers legend Paul Coffey in 1992. Matt’s uncle Jim, also an Edmonton native, played nine seasons as a defenseman with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks from 1981-1990. He had 52 goals and 191 assists for 243 points in 605 games. After his playing career, Jim became an NHL scout for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Buffalo Sabres, before being the assistant general manager of the Boston Bruins (winning a Stanley Cup in 2011) and since 2014 has been the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks. In an interesting note, Jim played a key role in the Bruins drafting Matt, in the sixth round, 175th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The Bruins general manager at the time was Peter Chiarelli. When Chiarelli became the Oilers general manager in 2015, he signed Matt to a contract on Aug. 27, 2016.

Prior to his AJHL career, Benning played minor hockey in Edmonton and St. Albert. He enjoyed playing games during Minor Hockey Week.

Matt’s dad and uncle are obviously familiar to Oilers fans, but there are other Bennings in the family tree who need to be recognized. As Matt pointed out, his late grandfather Elmer was a scout for the Montreal Canadiens for 46 years. Matt’s uncle Mark was a star at the University of Notre Dame and Harvard University before he played professionally in Germany, and Matt’s other uncle, Craig, was a scout for the Sabres before his role as general manager of the Dawson Creek Senior Canucks of the North Peace Hockey League last season.

“The whole thing that is special about Minor Hockey Week are overtime games,” he said. “You go five-on-five for a minute, then four-on-four for a minute. Then all the way down to one-on-one. One year, we went down to one-on-one. My dad, who was our coach, pulled the goalie. Our team had the centreman and me on the ice. Our centre passed the puck back to me. Their player came after me. I remember I bumped the puck off the boards to my teammate. He went down and scored and we won Minor Hockey Week. That was really special.”

Matt’s brother Michael is a defenseman for the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and his cousin Brandon is a scout for the Vancouver Canucks.

Instead of going the Western Hockey League route, Benning played one season in the United States Hockey League with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2012-13. He was able to produce some offense as he had 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 57 games. He helped the Fighting Saints win their fifth Clark Cup in franchise history. Interestingly, the Fighting Saints head coach at the time was former Dallas Stars head coach Jim Montgomery.

“I was very fortunate to play junior hockey in the area, where they (his family) could come and watch me and give me tips,” said Benning. He played his junior hockey with the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL. In 2011, he was part of a Saints team that won the AJHL championship. “That was my first year junior,” he recalled. “That was a big year for me. There were a lot more over-age players (20-year-olds) than there are now. For me it was getting used to playing against older players. We had a great group of guys, and I stay in contact with most of them.”

Following one season playing amateur hockey south of the border, Benning decided to follow in the footsteps of his uncle Mark and give university hockey in the United States (NCAA) a try. He played three seasons at Northeastern University in Boston from 2013 to 2016. While playing for the Huskies, Benning had nine goals and 47 assists for 56 points. In his final season at Northeastern, he was named assistant captain.

Every year Benning speaks to players who are considering entering the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. High performance players at the age of about 14 and 15 years old have a major decision to make, because those who choose to play in the WHL are ineligible to play in the NCAA. Benning is a supporter of hockey at the NCAA level and encourages players to keep their options open. He chose the NCAA over the WHL on his path to the NHL.

Benning’s debut with the Oilers in the 2016-17 season was delayed because of a broken foot he suffered in practice when a shot went off his skate. However, it was extremely special for Benning to play his first NHL game in Toronto, on Nov. 1, 2016. In 13 minutes and 51 seconds of ice time, he had two shots on net, delivered one hit, and of course was a +1, in a 3-2 Oilers overtime loss to the Maple Leafs.

“I think it is quite dependent on what you are as a player at the time,” said Benning. “Some players are developed younger and do not need that time at the NCAA. I needed that time to develop. My parents emphasized school, which is turning into more of a popular route now.”

Benning was also thrilled to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs in his rookie season. In 12 post-season games he had three assists and was a +3. Two of those assists came in game five of the Oilers’ first round playoff series against the San Jose Sharks, a 4-3 Oilers win. Benning assisted on goals by Patrick Maroon and Oscar Klefbom.

When Benning first signed with the Oilers in the summer of 2016, he was extremely busy. When he was not on the ice or training for the season, he was completing his business management degree through an online course.

“That was super exciting,” he said. “I know what it meant to the city and the fans and how long they waited for that. That was really cool to be on the opposite side of it as a player rather than a fan.”

It was a lifelong dream to be playing for the team he cheered for growing up.

When asked if there was one thing that many people may not know about him, he offered the following response.

“My parents had season’s tickets,” recalled Benning. “I watched them in the playoffs when they had that run in 2006. That was special to me. To get to wear the jersey and play at Rogers Place in its first season was really cool. In being from Edmonton, I get to bring a lot of knowledge about the city to other players who are not from the area. It’s an opportunity to create relationships with my teammates.”

“I figure skated,” he said. “My grandpa (Elmer), the Montreal Canadiens scout, made my dad and uncles figure skate. He made me figure skate. I didn’t like it. But I am grateful he did that. It helped me out big time with edge work. At the NHL now there is so much emphasis on speed. You do not need to be the fastest guy, but if you keep your speed, that is a big thing.” For those minor hockey league players who have dreams of making it to the NHL, Benning has the following advice. “No matter what, I encourage them to be a student of the game. Watch video and watch players on the ice that you try to role yourself after. At the NHL level, the best players in the world are watching shifts consistently. They are addicted to getting better. It doesn’t matter if you are dominating your level or hanging in there, it is important to be a student of the game. It helps you get better.” Benning’s goal this season is simple. Once he gets back into the lineup, he wants to stay healthy and be a positive contributor to the team. In evaluating Benning’s success to the Oilers, you do not need to look at all of the offensive statistics. There is one stat that has more meaning than all the others, and that is the plus/ minus category.

Shooting Shooting Shooting to Score JOEL LENIUS | HOCKEY EDMONTON

Are you having difficulty scoring goals? Are you having difficulty with your shooting accuracy? Is your release quick, powerful, and deceptive? Is your shooting technique consistent, even when under stress?

Coaches and players, here are some shooting habits, useful for all types of shots (slap, snap, wrist, etc.), which will help improve scoring execution through quickness of release, power, accuracy, and deceptiveness of release:

Shooting is one of the technical skills that often requires the finest of tuning and development. As goaltenders continue to improve in today’s game, the ability to have a quick, powerful, and deceptive release is essential.

1

Keep your “eyes and head up” during the entire shooting process.

2

Your top hand pulls the stick towards your body, your bottom hand pushes the stick towards the target. Ensure that your hands are away from your body.

3

The harder you “shift your weight” between your legs, the more power you will generate in your release. Keep your “shooting leg” bent with your knee bent overtop of your toes.

4

Keep your puck “loaded” at all times. Being able to shoot the puck at any moment, without using stickhandling adjustments, is a high-level skill. Pucks should be loaded behind/in-line with your “shooting foot.” Pucks that are in front of your body, do not allow you to optimally flex your stick or shift the weight in your legs.

14 | Hockey Edmonton Magazine

5

Push down on your stick, push forward with your arms. This generates flex in your stick, which is where the shot power comes from.

9

Follow through - rotate your wrists (“cup) over the puck, keep your eyes up, point your stick at the target. This also facilitates optimal accuracy.

6

Rotate/swing your "shooting hip" towards the target.

10

The quicker your release, the less time the goalie can set in stance and challenge the shooter. The quicker you shift your weight in your legs and load the puck, the quicker the release will occur.

11

Develop your ability to release off either foot, which facilitates increased power, increased ability to create new shooting lanes, and quicker, more deceptive releases.

12

Moving (pushing/pulling/hiding) the puck before/ during release creates release deception and forces the goalie to move, opening holes in their stance.

7

Push your momentum forward. Step into your shot with your weight/feet.

8

Keep your chest over-top of the puck before, during, and after your release. Keep your weight on the balls of your feet with minimal weight on your heels. This facilitates optimal accuracy and power.
