NOTES ON DRAWING INTRODUCTION
As designers, we use drawing as not only a means of representation, but a tool for understanding and conveying the sense of an idea. Over the course of my studies in Architecture and Urban Design, I have had the opportunity to develop proficiency in a variety of media as a means of visual expression and as a tool for understanding the various aspects of a design. In this portfolio I hope to capture the full scope of my visual abilities to stress the importance I put on visual experimentation as a means of conveying ideas and thoughts. From page to page, the visualization of a project can be wildly different ranging in colour, media, and complexity. I believe these subtleties all play a role in a what an image tells you, or how it impacts the viewer. My ultimate aim is to show that I can work in a variety of programs to achieve all sorts of visualizations - and that I have experience working as a designer on a wide range of projects under a team of extraordinary mentors.

A MIXED-USE URBAN COMPLEX This project was completed in my third year design studio under architect Philip Beesley. The design brief called for 250 residential units, 30 live-work studios, a public gallery, a theatre with lobby and back of house, workshops and studios, and a commercial area. I began by studying growth trends in the city as well as transit nodes in the surrounding area. The plot, located at 10 Wellesley Street in Toronto sits on Toronto’s Heritage walk which connects the city’s monuments and historic buildings. The design was thus conceived as an integral connecting node between Toronto’s monuments, commercial districts, and new residential zones. Over 50% of the ground floor is open space, while the rest is almost entirely public. At grade, people are pulled through the permeable block through vartying strips of programming - an outdoor gallery street, a commercial street, and a recreational green street. The stagehouse of the theatre stands out prominently as an outdoor media tower, the underground theatre peaks 1 meter above ground to form an outdoor public stage surrounded by cafes, restraurants, galleries and shops. The stagehouse opens up to an amphitheatre on the opposite, quieter street for smaller performances, workshops, public displays and rehearsals. Urban Study Diagrams – Illustrator

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS I had the opportunity to work on a number of architectural projects during my internship at Atelier PRO. Working alongside project archiect Martijn de Visser, I spent extensive time on educational institutes such as Kloppend Hart in Warmond, Basisscholen in Brielle, Krimpen an de Lek, Carmel College, Woonzorg in Nieuw Vennep, and Kindcentrum Vosholen. Working with Revit 2012 and 2013 and Maxwell Render Suite, my work included modelling and producing drawings through all phases of design, and producing final drawings and renders for clients and design reviews. I also had a chance to work extensively on competitions and designs for various civic buildings and hospitals.

GUARDIAN, DREAMER, SLEEPER FARROC COMPETITION ENTRY
During my time at POSAD, I had an incredible opportunity as regional designer for our FARROC Competition Entry. Our team consisted of POSAD, BIG Architects, NL Architects, ONE Architecture, and LOLA Landscape Architects - a conglomerate of highly acclaimed firms that function together as the Dutch Water Design Group. My role in this competition called for weekly design meetings across the Netherlands, working closely with the country’s best designers and architects, extensive research into developing a regional hurricance strategy for New York City and the Far Rockaway area, and the completion of various maps, diagrams and visual studies. I gave presentations, conducted design meetings at our office, and participated in discussion from day one to the very end of the competition.

RAPID BUS TRANSIT IN NORTHERN HOLLAND Following my work on the FARROC Competition, I began working on visualizations for a new Rapid Bus Lane in Northern Holland. The Bus line will provide a connection between the towns of Hilversum, Blaricum, Eemnes, and Huizen to Amsterdam. Such a large scale project means a variety of stakeholders - the public, the engineers, the politicians, the designers, etc. This experience allowed me to see first hand the give-and-take that occurs in the design process. We used our exptertise and abilities to visualize certain aspects of the bus line - using drawings as a tool for creating an argument. The result was changes to the bus trajectory and its design in crucial areas. In fact our visualizations were so powerful, all of the cities commissioned POSAD to visualize over 25 areas of the bus route to provide tools for discussion in design and town meetings.

URBAN STRATEGIES
A COLLECTION OF URBAN DESIGN WORK I have done two internships at Urban Strategies Inc. in Toronto, Canada. As a design intern, I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of products during my first internship, participating in research, design, diagramming, and drawing projects at all scales and level of completion. Our work on the Etobicoke Streetscape Design won various urban design awards and gained me a design scholarship from USI. I spent my second internship committed to the development of Hung Shui Kiu, an urban centre in Northern Hong Kong, just across from Shenzhen. This project required the design of an entire city including a financial centre, unique residential and mixed-use neighbourhoods, entertainment and research districts, a comprehensive transportation network and sustainable infrastructure. This is the largest scale project I have worked on, and the experience has taught me many things about urban design and development, industry, and planning techniques. My responsibilities included participating in meetings and presentations, working on the city model in ArchiCAD, and doing final renders and diagrams. LANDSCAPES OF CONSCIOUSNESS RE-IMAGINING THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
This project deals with a new approach to the botanical garden, stemming from its initial form as a place of research. Combining principles from quantum physics, neuroscience, the psychedelic experience, human psychology, and philosophy, I sought to create a garden reflecting the possibilities of human experience and our understanding of consciousness. This project was my study on how architectural space and programming can give rise to ‘psychedelic’ experiences - unique experiences that by definition alter our perceptions and consciousness. This project was a meditiation on how architectural space can mediate experience, sensory activity, thought processes, and well-being. Acclaimed author and neuroscientist Sam Harris wrote in an essay: t
“Many people don’t realize that all psychoactive drugs modulate the existing neurochemistry of the brain—either by mimicking specific neurotransmitters or by causing the neurotransmitters themselves to be more active. There is nothing hat one can experience on a drug that is not, at some level, an expression of t he brain’s potential.”

ECONORTH
A CARBON NEUTRAL WINTER HOME Eco-North is a carbon-neutral house designed for the Toronto Home Spec competition in 2011. The success of the design relies heavily on the open planning and simplification in design. The house maximizes efficiency by placing all mechanical systems into a core that can easily serve all parts of the house, as well as grouping similarly programmed spaces together. A HEED analysis of the design shows that the house, merely through high insulation levels, efficient appliances, photovoltaic power, and adherence to passive principles achieves a reduction in carbon emissions by 77% compared to a regular home of the same size, and a reduction of 76% compared to an “energy efficient” home. The design also uses less than a third of the site energy, electricity, and fuel consumption compared to an energy efficient home of the same size, resulting in a total cost saving in energy of 64%. The HEED analysis, however, does not recognize considerations such as material sourcing, construction practices, use of biomass and water reuse, and many of the other innovative mechanical systems employed in the building, which result in even further cost and energy savings as well as a lower carbon footprint. The building is successfully powered entirely by renewable resources and avoids the need to purchase carbon offsets to achieve carbon neutrality.
