Hetzler defined ruin as “the disjunctive product of the nature upon an edifice without loss of the unity produced builder”. Through this definition, she developed a understand the histories and processes (both manmade involved in its creation, describing the ruin as a “new being”.

Sustainability in our times either requires a change in our levels of comfort, or to stop building new things altogether. My design therefore departs from this central concern when we talk about energy use and sustainability. How can a building negotiate with a harsh environment, and provide a resilient structure upon which we can rebuild and imagine countless lives and configurations in an uncertain future. The design is therefore based fundamentally on the landscape, and using the building to bridge the body with its environment. Ruin /
If the ruin is the inevitable outcome for any building or structure, then ruination is the primary process that gives life to architecture, constrantly re-organizing, reordering, restructuring. This project began with a meditation on ruination in architecture. Starting backwards from the ruin, the lodge emerges from the landscape, through an imagined history, a possible past or future.
