SCIENCE GALLERY ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: SEM 6 • Science Gallery is a public institution that offers a social space to develop ideas, imagine the future, and realise dreams. This will be done through public labs, everchanging exhibitions, and mentorship programmes. • The site for the Science Gallery in Mumbai is located within TIFR campus. It is located between the academic, residential zones of the campus accessed by the Homi Bhabha Road leading towards the coast of Arabian Sea.

CONCEPT AND FORM DEVELOPEMENT
Dense tree cover on site
Stepped terraces formed for views
DESIGN PRINCIPLES • Strong sea winds can harm the structure if they hit perpendicular to the building surface. • Curved building face deflects the wind hence reducing the speed, minimizing the damage. It also improves the sunlight access to the trees in void.

• Every city needs a place like ‘The Forum Romanum’ which can reinforce the identity and public environment. Thus it has been innovated and re-imagined according to the modern times. • Project location is the city of Rome and the site lies next to River Tiber and Vía Giulia, the most popular street of the Renaissance. This popular evening stroll destination includes flea markets, restaurants , theatre, tourism offices, etc.

CONCEPT: ‘MONTE TESTACCIO’, THE BROKEN POT MOUNTAIN
‘Amphorae’, huge terracota pots used for goods transfer
They became the key to the success of Rome’s economy
An artificial hill has been created with 2 spirals connecting opposite streets
Resulted in the formation of an artificial hill, called ‘Monte Testaccio’.
Resulted in large amount of discarded pots to be disposed of.
The pots were broken and stacked neatly into stepped terracesfor many years.

LANDSCAPE OF COLORS
• ‘Rudiments’ means a basic principle or element. In the context of the brief, rudiments relates to the idea of landscape being a primary or foundation element to keep in mind while designing. • The site chosen is the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (IISER-B). The residential and the academic block are separated by a series of empty pockets which have been chosen to design landscape.
Designing landscape comprises of understanding the sciences of organisms, the symbiotic relationships of the man with nature while also keeping in mind the natural aesthetics of designing and the interconnection of the above come together to fuse a working landscape design.
COLOR SPECTRUM
28
Color blocking is used as a concept in design as bright and vibrant colors are proven to evoke positive emotions like playfullness, serenity and warmth in different people.
THE COLLONADE
The site has a central pathway running throughout its expanse and is covered by a collonade. The collonade passes through the various academic blocks interconnecting them and frames the views.
29
Colorblocking has been done using both artificial and natural methods. 1. THINKING CORNER These spaces are designed closer to labs and research areas to initiate group discussions and brainstorming sessions. The walls can be used to scribble idea while giving privacy if need be.

ARC HITECTU R E OF THE SEMI-S ACRED • Semi sacred structures are built to support the sacred structures and to cater to their civic needs but are often ignored. • These non-religious structures spring up around the religious complexes and hold high value in the life of people as it becomes necessary for them to pass through these ancillary spaces to visit the sacred core. • The chosen site for documentation are dharmshalas and matts around the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubneswar, Odisha.
