Martina Hingis A Tennis Legend To Retire Again After A Prodigious Career The sad news is that Martina Hingis has announced her retirement from tennis and to mention, this is for the third time. The 37-year-old Swiss unveiled the news at the WTA Finals in Singapore, where she is playing in the doubles event with partner Chan Yung-Jan. Hingis wrote on her Facebook wall: “Here we are for the third and final time. Looking back now, it’s hard to believe that almost exactly 23 years ago I made my professional debut. She added that the years which followed were some of the most rewarding years of her life, both at a personal level and professionally, but now she believes that it is time to retire, which she would be doing after her last match in Singapore. She quoted that she feels lucky to have got an opportunity to play that wonderful sport for so many years. Tennis was always her passion and she’s extremely thankful for all the opportunities, challenges, partnerships and friendships it has given her. Hingis also mentioned that it is not a goodbye because history knows that she hasn’t been able to stay away from tennis for a long in the past, and she’s also looking forward to watching for new opportunities and challenges in front of her. She has a firm belief that the best is yet to come. Martina Hingis returned to the sport for the third time in 2013 and forged a hugely successful career in doubles, winning 10 more grand slam titles, taking her overall tally to 25. Now she retires at the rank of world number one at the doubles and also holds the US Open women’s doubles title and mixed titles at Wimbledon and in New York. Hingis made people speculate about her retirement at the US Open when she stopped committing to go for a third straight mixed crown with Britain’s Jamie Murray at the Australian Open. If you don’t know, let’s tell you that Martina Hingis was a child prodigy to be the champion of the grand slams; next, she won the women’s doubles with Helena Sukova at Wimbledon in 1996, at an age of 15, only. The next year she dominated in singles, won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles and reached the French Open final.

She earned the rank of world number one, only at the age of 16 and earned two more grand slam singles titles in her teens and completed the women’s doubles Grand Slam in 1998. But Martina Hingis had to struggle with ankle problems and announced her retirement from tennis in the year 2003 at the age of 22. After four years, she returned with more success, won two WTA Tour singles events in 2006 and qualified for the WTA Finals and won her first mixed doubles grand slam title. But injuries continued to come in between her games and next in November 2007 Hingis announced that she had tested positive for a metabolite of cocaine at Wimbledon and was banned from tennis for two years, which lead to her retirement, but only to be back in 2010 playing in the senior’s doubles events at several grand slams and competed in World Team Tennis. After entry at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in the year 2013, Hingis announced another come back on the main tour, but only in doubles. And she flourished. Martina Hingis won her next slam title with India’s Sania Mirza in the women’s doubles at Wimbledon in 2015 and the following day, she won the mixed title with Leander Paes. Martina Hingis’ achievements also include a medal at the Rio Olympics, when she partnerTimea Bacsinszky and earned silver in the women’s doubles in the Rio.
