VARIANCE OF WELLBEING
DESIGN DISSERTATION 2020-21 INSTITUTIONAL CO-WORKING SPACE IN BENGALURU
NEED FOR THE STUDY
T
he shelter has been the most primordial of human needs and it’s developing from the prehistoric to the technology-driven era to satisfy the emerging human needs as well as the wants by the architects, designers, and engineers. However social trends are converting human shelters into boxed cages of illusionary sick-traps, the basic idea of human-centric design is getting more and more blurred while the building industry shifts it’s focus to building certification from what is the very basis of architecture and sustainability. The new social structure in addition to global warming and pollution are making the situation worse than ever before and it will not be going to change unless the building industry prioritizes the health and well-being of people. “[Wellbeing can mean] feeling happy, healthy, socially connected, and purposeful. Unfortunately, wellbeing appears to be in decline” . Sick building syndrome (“A collection of nonspecific symptoms including eye, nose and throat irritation, mental fatigue, headaches, nausea, dizziness and skin irritations, which seem to be linked with occupancy of certain workplaces.)
AIM The study aims to identify, understand, and design parameters that affect the physiological and psychological well-being of a human being within the architectural envelope.
The Design co-working office tower aims to improve users wellbeing and performance and make an alternative lively working space for the existing unsatisfactory work environment.

The pandemic outbreak changed how one perceives the world. The virus hit the majestic city of Mumbai on 12.03.2020. The lockdown started as a gag, and a reason for getaways from work and school soon became a major issue. The daily number of deaths rose faster than the prices of petrol, and that’s when the heroes in white rose to the occasion and became the barriers against covid. They worked day and night relentlessly without giving a second thought about their lives.

VIEW FROM INSIDE THE MEMORIAL
The divine and pure eternal flames of white coat COVID warriors break through the heavy, bare, and brutal rough concrete to depict the COVID infestation symbolizing the grim and dark patch in Mumbai sacred timeline. The smooth concrete pedestals at the entrance are engraved with the names of countless warriors who sacrificed their lives. These warriors strengthened the foundation for civilian life (the steel framework), depicted through the memorial.
The view showcases a glimpse of 12th March spreading its warmth and light into the dark, gloomy sky, tearing through the clouds of grim as a beacon of hope, courage and sacrifice, making its presence known to the ones who the mighty warriors died for.
The flower steel sections iterated as ropes to symbolize unity can be seen from inside the memorial. These sections represent civilians’ diverse cultures and religions coming together to protect the eternal flame from extinguishing and commemorating the fallen white coat warriors. It reflects how the intricate threads of culture and religion came together, surpassing the hurdles of discrimination to pay respect to the fallen warriors.

Mental health is one of the significant issues of the 21st century. According to a survey conducted, every 1 out of 4 people suffers from a major mental or psychological health issue. Yet, more than half of our nation’s population considers it taboo to even talk about or doesn’t believe in its very existence. VIEW FROM MAIN ENTRY The Main Entrance is designed in a way that centres the user’s mind and draws attention towards the main meditation centre while connecting to the surrounding scenery and represts the start of the spiritual journey.
VIEW FROM THE GARDEN ‘THE GARDEN’ is designed to trigger all the senses of humans, helping to establish a Human-Nature connection which results in a sense of calmness, reduced heart rate, and physiological and psychological healing. VIEW FROM YOGA AREA The yoga area is divided into two parts with a waterfall between them. The sound of water will give the user a sense of peace. A user can establish a visual connection with the adjoining community farm and workshop area.
The site for the intervention is located in the perfect setting of backwater in the ‘Gods own country’ Kerela. The lush greenery and the gushing water create an ideal setting for evoking the 6 senses to bring peace to one mind. The proposal is designed and articulated to serve all kinds of age groups and forms grounds for more interactive yet spiritual getaways to find “the true meaning of life”.
BEYOND ARCHITECTURE Beyond architecture, I like to explore the magical world of concept design and photo manipulation, it helps me to break out from the conventional design and design restrictions that architecture has.
