“Periscope House“ is a house for my parents. The site was located in Bomun-Dong, an area densly occupied by “Hanoks,” or Korean traditional houses. The project guidelines and laws restricted the height of the building to one level above ground to blend in with the other Hanoks. The site was also very small and thus most of the occupiable space would be inevitably placed below ground level. Therefore several measures had to be taken to bring natural light into the underground floor. My concept is to make two “periscopes“ to funnel and refract natural light.

The first floor will contain the bedroom, private bathroom and atrium garden which floats above one of the funnels on a thick glass pane, letting through natural light while providing a delightfully lightdrenched atrium space. The stairs that pass through the other funnel lead underground where there is the living room, dining, kitchen and guest bathroom. The sunlight refracts off the funnel beneath the atrium into the living room. The other funnel refracts light coming from a side window into the stairs and reading space below.

The area around the site is currently undergoing rapid change. The small, shabby buildings in the alleyways behind Choongjung Apartment are being transformed into cafes, restaurants, bookshops, etc. The school of architecture can play an important role in this transformation. Students can actively participate in both the design and the construction process of the new buildings.

OLD FACADE
Preserving the facade and the atrium, the slabs in between these two layers are discarded and new walls are inserted in the emptied space. These walls are placed respecting the initial positions of the columns, so that the newly inserted space follows the guidelines of the past. The walls contain openings of various sizes and shapes to fit the needs of the programs placed in between. The result is a “sandwich” of layers that creates an enriched dialogue between the old and the new. A wide variety of ceiling heights create interesting interactions between the atrium space, the inserted space, and the facade.

Kim Soo Keun’s original masterplan followed Le Corbusier’s Ideals and attempted to seperate the pedestrian and vehicle circulation through a pedestrian walking deck made on the third floor, that would connect all the four units in the megastructure. However, the units were made by seperate construction companies who did not follow the original plan and refused to finish the walking deck. As a result the units remained isolated and the walking deck could not retain its planned function as an elevated park and thus became a barren and under-utilized space.

Social Magnets
Park Axis Affected Urban Fabric This project is a proposal to create an elevated urban park such as the “The Highline” in New York or the recently finished “Seoul-Lo” in Seoul. This park will reunite the isolated units and connect the green spaces of Jongmyo and Namsan. By placing various “Social Magnets” into Seunsangga, visitors will be attracted into the park and will bring back life into the run-down district. The original stairs that lead to the walking deck were steep and narrow. Thus the deck was very unaccessible and was left unvisited. Improvements in vertical circulation were crucial for the success of the new urban park.
