ILLUSTRATION STUDY
HONOURS RESEARCH ABSTRACT This research addresses a field of enquiry from personal interests in how those with autism perceive and imagine space. The aim is an attempt to understand the nature of spatial experiences through the lens of an autistic artist (Giles Trehin) by analysing the urban and architectural patterns of his imaginary city. By doing so, the existing urban fabric and building spaces is reconceptualised from a different perspective by analysing and discussing the ideas from an idealised city envisioned by an autistic artist. These utopian ideas of the autistic artist in the form of an imaginary world will be decoded and discussed in relation to architecture as language. The discussion in this thesis of the imaginary city is based on the idea of architecture being read as a linguistic structure. The drawings are decoded in a linear order against three linguistic themes: Narrative of Imaginary City - Classification Narrative of Building Language - Power Narrative of Urban Language – Value From the discussion, it is concluded that Urville is a intended powerful city and well thought out with a detailed historical timeline which coincides with real life events. Historical events in this imaginary world has an impact on how the city is used at present times. Trehin has included factors that made Urville a powerful city with much consideration of historical events. The logistics, political, economic and knowledge based factors also contributes much to Urville’s identity as an advanced city. The characteristics of Urville have shown that many of the buildings in Urville have the characteristics of a masculine architecture with minimal consideration of social possibilities. In conclusion, this research aims to explore an alternative approach to architecture design. While autism is generally looked at as a additional factor to design drivers, this research along with a professional practice project aims to challenge the generic use of space by using the knowledge of autism as the main design driver. ...
ADVANCED DESIGN RESEARCH ABSTRACT (DESIGN FOR DEMENTIA)
This report is developed with the guidance from Professor Steven Fleming and Professor Roger Fay.
The investigations in this report aim to contribute to the improvement of design for people with dementia in aged care facilities by addressing eight key design issues. The first section of the research addresses the issue of senses by exploring the notion of “home” and ways to create a home-like environment through the lenses of the five basic human senses. The sensory issue is further explored with the idea of encouraging a sense of belonging using the built environment in order to provide a better transition from a personal home to a shared home. The second part of the report investigates the issues of human behaviour by addressing the social engagement aspects of care homes. This is imperative if we are to create a more sociable and stimulating environment for the residents The third part of the research report explores and develops way finding strategies to aid spatial navigation on a human scale for people with dementia. Additionally, this part of the report also addresses spatial orientation in terms of care centres circulation typologies and the efficiency of these typologies at the macro scale. The final part of the report investigates the outdoor aspects of a care home which respect to design components of a well designed Healing Garden. This is reported to be beneficial to ailing individuals especially in care homes to encourage social and physical activities as well as engagement with nature and with other people.
