GRANDMOTHER'S JEWELRY BOX SOME THINGS AREN’T JUST THINGS, THEY ARE MEMORIES. WRITTEN BY SUKHMAN GREWAL

My antique little girl, my grandma was a remarkable woman, a combination of warmth, kindness and love. One of my most precious items is my grandmother’s jewelry box. It held special place in my heart ever since I was a little girl. Whenever I glance over it, incredible memories of my grandmother and I dance in my head. Ever since I was a little girl I aspired to be like my grandmother. Tall, charming, with a pearly white smile that could brighten up the room, she was indeed the most wonderful person I have ever known.

bedroom. It’s a beautiful plush black velvet box, which contains three slots. One for necklaces and bracelets, another for earrings, and the last one for the rings. This jewelry box was bought by my grandmother in the 1990’s and even today, after twenty-five years, it still looks new and beautiful. My grandmother was really fond of collecting jewelry. She started this collection with her mother’s jewelry when she was little. Year by year the box would fill up with stunning pieces. I always wished it could be mine. My grandmother always dressed so tastefully. What made her stand out the most was the jewelry that she complimented with her outfits everyday. When I went to stay at my grandmother’s house, playing dress-up was something I loved to do. I would try on almost all of her jewelry and dance around the whole house. As I grew up and my grandmother started getting older, the jewelry box meant more than just playing dress up games. At the age of seventy my grandmother passed away, leaving me the jewelry box. This meant more to me than anything. She knew how much I loved her jewelry and I’m thrilled to know that I’ll be able to show it off, in memory of her. Every time I look at the jewelry box it brings back memories of my angelic grandmother. The gorgeous ruby rings, the stunning emerald bracelet, the gold choker each and every other piece has a story of its own. In our Indian heritage, jewelry holds a major role in a woman’s life. As a tradition, Grandmothers’ and mothers’ jewelry is passed onto their children and grandchildren, taking us back to the ancient history of our country. Since then, an Indian woman and her immense love for jewelry never separated. It is rare to find a woman who has never decorated herself with jewelry. Jewelry has not only traditional and aesthetic value but is also considered as a source of security in times of financial crisis. The traditional jewelry has always been very heavy consisting of mostly gold pieces. The beauty of Indian jewelry is lies in the uniqueness of its designs and efforts of craftsmanship. Ornaments made of various precious and semi precious stones like emeralds, pearls, diamonds, rubies, sapphires etc. are used. The jewelry created in India is not only to suffice the aesthetic sense but also fulfill religious needs. The significance of jewelry in the life of women in India is evident from the jewelry gifts they receive from their own birth to the birth of their babies. Whatever you wear, a piece of jewelry, fake or real, expensive or not so much, by the end of it, it’s all about memories, emotions, messages and so much more. The piece might not be valuable or even be very pretty. Yet, their value for you is priceless. My grandmother’s jewelry box is a tangible precious possession that reminds me every time I look at it who and what matters to me. Therefore, I grew up and she grew old, yet our love had no end. For I was blessed long as she lived cause my grandma was my best friend. I will cherish her memories and her possessions throughout my life. I truly believe that when you lose a parent you gain a god. I feel blessed that I have a guardian angel in heaven, I call her my grandma

ELIE SAAB SPRING RTW 2019 WRITTEN BY SUKHMAN GREWAL A classic, well-tailored outfit is a timeless staple in every person’s wardrobe, making for a faithful companion at parties, work, and pretty much any formal occasion. The Elie Saab woman is tall, beautiful and self-confident. Spring 2019 runway flooded with all the glitz and glamour we expect from Elie Saab Couture. A self- trained professional, Saab started sewing for his family members from the age of 9. He believes in feminine elegance not extravagance and tries to deliver good taste. White was everywhere gently accenting the collection from the dress to the shoes and accessories like the belt. But he quickly moved away from this softer look to a bold black outfit with shimmering beadwork and high contrast embroidery.

Nature inspired this breakout eveningwear collection. With his dark color palette, solid floral prints and floral embroidery Saab has attempted an edgy look this season. His florals seem more finessed than usual. Beyond that, the perfectly fitted silhouettes all qualified as pretty, elegant and graceful. The delicate gowns had a lightness and movement that looked magnificent. Abundant leopard prints looked bold and daring. Printed silk, embroidered lace, sequence Saab has expression and richness in his designs. The single colored dramatic gowns look lavish on the runway, just the usual Elie Saab way. The collection makes her feel strong and self-assured while wearing these bizarre pieces. Saab’s collection gives a nostalgic view of feminism with a mix of seduction and elegance. After all, who can resist a fairy tale? This kind of detailing will be recognized in the fashion world and Saab deserves all the appreciation he receives.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION Report by Sukhman Grewal

The fashion industry is not famous for being environmentally friendly. Do you really need that new dress? Rather than buying something new why not pick something from a thrift store? Why not offer them something from your wardrobe in exchange for it? The truth is there are lots of small, easy changes you can make that will collectively make a big difference to the environment, both socially and ecologically. Don’t buy a something until you commit on wearing it at least 30 times. We're all guilty of an impulse buy, often knowing full well we probably won’t wear it that many times not realizing how that one piece of cloth has taken up thousands of liters of water, gone through a million different processes to be in your closet while you don’t even value it. In recent years there has been an increase of charity and vintage shopping, and major high streets brands have launched sustainable fashion collections.

I spend a lot of time shopping. If I’m not shopping, I’m probably thinking about it. Trends we are spotting this year aren’t exactly new new, they’ve been well tested before. Plaid suiting and mashed-up separates are already hits in the street style world. When all else fails, go with an animal print leopard never slinks out of fashion; every girl seems to own a leopard-print slip dress or skirt. This season, many items—a puffer, a scarf, and a midi dress—have received a little ostrich feather flair. In a season of objectively wearable clothing, this trend is about letting accessories do the talking. Little black dress: $8.99 Faux fur animal print jacket: $13.99 Gold bracelet: $7.99 Ear loops: $2.99 Total amount paid - $36

HEAD TO TOE NEUTRAL ARTICLE BY SUKHMAN GREWAL

Soft head-to-toe neutrals are really having a moment right now. While you may think monochromatic neutrals seem bland or boring but it’s all about adding layers and textures ― the more the better ― to give your outfit visual interest.

TEDDY COATS Their combination of softness and warmth make teddy coats a pleasure to the touch, and they suit most body types. In upcoming years, it may become a “classic staple” in fashion similar to the leather jacket. For now, the teddy coat is sticking around.

PUFF IT UP

Bolder not basic is the way to go this season! Pop color puffer jackets like yellow, Red, pink bright blue etc. are all over social media. This season, if there’s one jacket that you have to have, it’s a puffer. THE PANTSUIT CHICK

This is the season of Starburst suiting. Skirts, shorts, trousers and jackets come in bold, bright shades that can pack a punch as a full look. Giving professional tailoring an energised refresh, designers injected their suits with a heavy dose of saturated fruity shades for S/S19.
