CORONAVIRUS

COVID-19

STOP THE SPREAD

HANDS

Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or using hand sanitizer, regularly throughout the day will reduce the risk of catching or passsing on the virus.

FACE

Coronavirus is carried in the air by tiny respiratory droplets that carry the virus. Larger droplets can land on other people or on surfaces they touch while smaller droplets, called aerosols, can stay in the air indoors for at least 5 minutes, and often much longer if there is no ventilation. Face coverings reduce the dispersion of these droplets, meaning if you’re carrying the virus you’re less likely to spread it when you exhale.

SPACE

Transmission of the virus is most likely to happen within 2 metres, with risk increasing exponentially at shorter distances. While keeping this exact distance isn’t always possible, remaining mindful and careful of surroundings while continuing to make space has a powerful impact when it comes to containing the spread.

SETTLING BACK TO SCHOOL

As lockdown restrictions have eased and most children are being encouraged back to school full time, how can they settle back in to a good routine?

Plan and Prepare for School Routine Although the prospect might be daunting, the chances are children will find it good to be with friends again. They will be less likely to get bored and will be kept constantly busy. To avoid any back-to-school blues and really get back into it, read these top tips for braving the classroom again. 6 | To advertise please email: suki@goldstarcreative.net

* Make a firm decision to get your child to stick to the new routine and timetable - this will help get back into the swing of things more easily. All get up when the alarm goes off and encourage children to get to wherever you need to be on time whether it’s the school bus stop or a science lesson. * Try to make sure your child takes some healthy food to school. Pick snack foods

that boost health like fresh fruit and low-fat dairy products. Also get them to try to drink water throughout the day as this will help to keep them active and their brain sharp. * Encourage them to get back into any sports or exercise the school does. Really trying will help to make up for any lack of activity over the holidays and get those young bodies going again. * Be positive about homework and try to encourage your child to get it done as soon as possible. The longer they leave things, the worse they feel and the bigger

the job seems. Do it straightaway, and then they can relax and enjoy themselves. * Always prepare for the next school day. Your child should put anything they need to take in their bag and lay out clothes ready. Being prepared always helps to keep them feeling on top of things and much more relaxed. * Get them to bed in good time. School can be tiring and if they’re getting up early and running around a lot of the day, they need to recharge. Make a set bed time then they will be raring to get back to school the next day!

YOUR DOG AND YOUR EXERCISE

Most of us are all well aware of the importance of regular exercise. Not only does daily movement improve our overall physical health, but it also offers a whole host of benefits for our mental health. Whether you favour a high-impact aerobic workout, enjoy stretching out with some yoga, or love nothing more than a stroll around the park, there is no escaping the fact that exercise is an important part of our daily lives. As most dog owners know, this is just as true for the canine members of the family. If you own a dog, you will know how important it is to ensure they get daily exercise. Just like their human counterparts, exercise is crucial to a dog’s wellbeing, providing them with 8 | To advertise please email: suki@goldstarcreative.net

mental stimulation, helping them to maintain good health, and ensuring they sustain a healthy weight. A recent report conducted by the leading pet charity, PDSA, found that thousands of dogs go without a walk on a regular basis. Not only is this bad for their overall health, it can also lead to behavioural issues caused by stress and boredom. Yet, walking your dog does not have to be a chore; instead, exercising your pet could benefit you as much as it does your furry friend! Just like us humans, dogs enjoy a range of different exercises. Some days, they have more energy than others. Equally, the amount of exercise your dog can handle may vary according to its size and breed. Upping the ante on exercise does

not have to start with a grand gesture. Why not begin by resisting the urge to drive to the local shop? Instead, pop on your comfiest shoes, grab the lead and take your dog with you. Each day extend the walk a little further by taking the longer way home. Before you know it, you will both be fitter and faster! If you already enjoy regular active pursuits, why not let your dog get involved in the action? Activities like hiking, jogging, and cycling offer the perfect opportunity for your dog to really stretch its legs, while getting a cardio workout in the process. This type of high-impact exercise is especially good for younger dogs, or those breeds that have bundles of energy! If your pet is a little older, and no longer needs (or can manage) intense exercise, then a short stroll around the block each day could be just as effective to keep them from getting bored. If you have a garden or access to outdoor space allow your dog time to run free and explore. Games offer another great way to keep dogs happy and entertained. Balls, frisbees, and toys designed especially for them could keep them occupied for hours while also providing them with that all-important exercise. Whichever way you look at it, if you own a dog, regular, daily exercise is as important for them as it is for us, their human owners. Whether it is a short walk a couple of times a day, a long run in the park, or a hike in the hills, helping your dog keep fit is an essential and important part of dog ownership.

MAGIC TRICKS FOR SMALL GARDENS

It’s easy to give your garden the illusion of being bigger than it really is by borrowing techniques from interior design and even great artists. Magic is all about illusion. When it comes to making a small space look larger, there are loads of ideas to trick the eye into a fooled sense of space. Gardening for small spaces borrows many tricks of the trade from interior design and the world of art, both of which can teach us a thing or two about placement and perspective. One of the first important concepts to understand is the effect of colour on the eye. Artists and interior designers know that cool colours such as blues, soft pinks and white appear to recede from the eye. Blue in particular, mimics the bluish tint that atmospheric haze gives to distant objects. Plant the perimeter of the garden in cool colours and it will look larger.

Hot colours including reds, oranges and bright yellows have the opposite effect. They jump out at the eye and are useful for lending intimacy to too-large spaces, but should be avoided in small spaces. Any bright colour, even white, will appear to close in a garden space. For example, a pergola painted white will look closer than one painted in natural tones. Painting fences soft colours or muted greens as opposed to Moroccan orange or brilliant red will make the perception of your boundaries recede away from you and make your garden look bigger. It was the Renaissance artists who discovered the illusion of depth through perspective by copying the way in which natural scenes seem to recede to a single point. A skilful gardener can use this knowledge to force the perspective, that is, to make a landscape seem to have more depth than it actually does.

14 | To advertise please email: suki@goldstarcreative.net

You can, for example, run a path straight back through the centre of the garden, staking it out so that the path gradually narrows as it approaches the back fence. The viewer’s eye will assume that the width of the path is uniform and that the edges seem to draw together because the path is receding into the distance.

bold textured items close, other items behind it will look further away. As with home interiors, simplifying and removing clutter around the garden and outdoor living spaces will make them appear more spacious.

Similarly, if you clip a hedge so that it diminishes in height and width at a uniform rate as it draws away from the viewer, it will seem much longer than it actually is. Echoing the plantings near to the house with similar but markedly smaller ones along the back fence also creates an exaggerated illusion of depth. Overplanting is one quick way to make a garden look smaller. Be conservative with plants. Choose reliable plants with soft muted colours, fine textures and those that blend with surrounded gardens for that borrowed landscape effect. The French expression trompe l’oeil means ‘fool the eye’. In its simplest form, this technique involves the use of a fulllength mirror to give an illusion of depth to an enclosing wall or fence. Conceal the mirror at the end of a path and at a slight angle to the wall or fence so that when you look into it, you don’t see a reflection of yourself, which would destroy the illusion. Eyes can also be deceived by texture. Fine texture is hard for the eyes to focus on at a distance. The illusion created is that fine textures appear out of focus and therefore a perception of space is produced. In contrast, by placing large To advertise please email: suki@goldstarcreative.net | 15

A HAUNTING BREAK

For most people, the thought of unwanted ghostly visitors lurking in their hotel would send a shiver down the spine, but for others its half the fun. If cold spots, mysterious noises and ghoulish sights are your idea of the perfect holiday accommodation then a haunted break could make the ideal getaway. If you’re a fervent history fan, why not combine your interests and enjoy a taste of the Tudor lifestyle at Bolebroke Castle? This historic hunting lodge in Sussex featured in the film The Other Boleyn Girl and became the setting for Henry VIII’s courtship of Anne Boleyn.

Any ghost-hunters in the making should not be left disappointed as many ghostly sightings have been reported in the castle, including the figure of a headless women thought to be Anne Boleyn. If this is not enough to whet your appetite, Bolebroke Castle features stunning tapestries depicting scenes from the Tudor period, one of the finest Elizabethan staircases in existence and an exhibition devoted to Henry VIII. The ghost of Mary Queen of Scots is said to haunt the Talbot Hotel in Oundle, Northamptonshire. The hotel features the oak staircase brought from the ruins of nearby Fotheringhay Castle, and it was

down these steps that Mary walked to her execution. The Talbot Hotel is full of Elizabethan features and the oak beams, open fires and transom windows enhance the sense of history.

with the earliest dating back to 1516. Browne Bushell, a naval officer who was executed for piracy in 1651, is rumoured to haunt his former home - he has been seen and heard walking the stairs.

Spooky Encounters If the prospect of grisly, phantom royals is too chilling an ordeal, you might prefer a stay in eerie mansion Gorse Hill. This Georgian mansion is set in 17 acres of Surrey countryside but hides a dark past. Formerly owned by a Lloyd’s underwriter who lost his fortune aboard the ill-fated vessel Titanic, the creepy house has been the setting for many reported strange occurrences throughout its history.

If you visit the Lumley Castle Hotel in Chester-Le-Street, County Durham, then you might have a spooky encounter with Lady Lily Lumley, the 14th century lady of the manor. It is rumoured that she was murdered by two priests after refusing to follow the Catholic faith, and she is said to wander the corridors and rooms of the castle to this day. There is also Black Jack, a mischievous, cheeky and playful spirit that is said to tease guests by moving belongings around.

Located in the charming seaside village of Whitby that stands on the edge of the North York Moors, Bagdale Hall Hotel comprises of three historical buildings,

For a weekend break with a difference, why not try one of these haunted hotels – you never know, you might just meet one of their uninvited guests…

Sweet potato and paneer curry Serves: 4 Paneer is a lightly pressed Indian cheese available in some supermarkets. If you can’t find it, halloumi cheese or a firm tofu would make good alternatives. This recipe is packed with nutrients and is delicious served with naan bread and rice.

INGREDIENTS - 500g sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks - 400g can chopped tomatoes - 250g paneer, cut into 1.5cm cubes - 150g shelled fresh or frozen peas - 100ml vegetable stock - 1 onion, chopped - 2 garlic cloves, crushed - 1 tbsp vegetable oil - 1 tbsp mild curry powder - 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh root ginger

METHOD 1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan and fry the onion and garlic gently, stirring occasionally, for 4–5 minutes until softened. 2. Add the sweet potatoes and stir-fry for 2 minutes, then stir in the curry powder and ginger and cook for 30 seconds. 3. Stir in the tomatoes with their juice and the stock. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and cook gently for 12–15 minutes until the sweet potato is tender. 4. Stir in the peas and simmer for 3 minutes, then add the diced paneer and cook for a further 2 minutes until heated thoroughly. 5. Season to taste, scatter over the chopped mint and serve hot.

Delicious accompanied with some thick, crusty bread and butter.
