Editor’s note
Our 12th Issue is here and interesting its our largest. What a ride we had. Sometimes fascinating, many-a-times bumpy. We learnt a lot and and we explored to our best capabilities. The 12th issue celebrates the forces that guided us, to what has become of us as a magazine today. One might not, or might believe in the existence of God or reality of Religion, one thing remains for a fact that we humans are speckles of dust in the last endless universe. An energy drives us, could it be called cosmic or celestial. The Celestial issue talks about the myths, the stories, the prophecies and the forces beyond us meager humans. Join us and explore our adventure.

HOW CHRISTIANITY INFLUENCED FASHION by Shivani Yadav
The debate surrounding where religion and fashion stand has been a long one and while to some it may seem like a sensitive topic, considering how both the parties have their extremes and subsequent loyalists, the relationship between the two is nothing short of interesting. Christianity, in particular, has an extensive history of influencing fashion designers that went on to create designs that impacted the world in a very significant way. The interest in this topic was understandably piqued when earlier this year the Met announced that their theme for 2018 would be ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion And The Catholic Imagination’, which was being endorsed by the Vatican along with 50 garments and accessories being loaned by the city itself. But as controversial as the exhibition was, this was not the first time that the fashion world took inspiration from Catholicism. In fact, one of the most iconic designers in history, Christian Dior, was very religious and extremely superstitious; and while
6 M.IND MAG December 2018 Mindmag.media
his designs didn’t fully convey that side of him when he was alive, the brand legacy certainly did that for the Haute Couture Fall/Winter collection in 2000 when John Galliano had a sinister-looking priest open the show. The theme of the collection wasn’t about religion but that image of the model is certainly one for the ages. Of course, three before that, Gianni Versace presented the now-iconic molten dress with Byzantine cross embroidered on the front. And in 2007, for the Spring/Summer Couture collection, John Paul Ataker filled the ramp with all kinds of Catholic imagery from devotional artworks and stained glass-inspired colors to decorative halos and a Sacred Heart embroidery. Another instant is when the legendary brand, Givenchy presented it’s take on Catholicism. Ricardo Tisci had his models wearing crowns of metallic thorn, t-shirts with ‘Jesus Is Lord’ emblazoned on it and layers of plain clothing that was very similar to church vestments. And one of the most recent and truly breathtaking examples would be Guo Pei who presented a Haute Couture Spring/Summer collection in 2017 that took 2 years to make and featured only 19 looks. The collection was heavily inspired by an 18th-century cathedral in St. Gallen, Switzerland and the end result featured the level of intricate embroidery that created pieces simply out of this world! These are just few, albeit popular, examples of fashion designers taking inspiration from Catholic Church. The amount of interest this religion has had in popular culture can be a discussion on its own, but the level of influence that Christianity has on our daily lives certainly has a lot to do with clothes and accessories. Fashion is a form of wearable art where it not only performs to role of basic necessity but also helps the person describe themselves in whichever way they feel comfortable, so it’s extremely interesting the amount of prominence Catholic symbols have in the industry. It certainly would be very fascinating to see the co-relation between these two sides in the next couple of decades considering the current political climate but again... that’s a discussion for another time.

ASTRONOMY & ASTROLOGY: WHAT’S THE CO-RELATION, WHY YOU SHOULD CARE AND WHY YOU SHOULDN’T by Shivani Yadav
Astronomy and astrology are two of the most fascinating subjects to explore and to some degree they are related to each other but mostly operate individually. In astronomy’s case, it’s a study of universe and its contents outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomers examine the positions, motions, and properties of celestial objects. As for astrology, it’s a study of how those positions, motions, and properties affect people and events on Earth. It can best be described as a form of belief because some people genuinely believe the spirituality of people being connected with the universe and the position of planets and other celestial bodies having a strong effect on all of our personalities. A famous counter argument to that is, in such a giant universe it’s a bit narcissistic to think that planets revolve around you and what you do with your life. Another argument to astrology is that it makes people lazy or over-confident.
26 M.IND MAG December 2018 Mindmag.media
The zodiac sign readings may very well give people something to blame their misfortunes on, rather than taking the responsibility in their own hands and working hard; and there can no doubt that this particular argument is very strong considering so many of us describe ourselves through our signs and excuse our behavior because of various placements of sun or moon. But how people eventually interpret astrology into their own life shouldn’t take away from the fact that it’s study of outer universe that eventually lead to existential questions about life and death. And studies are like that are extremely important because it enable us to widen our horizons into questioning the core of our existence, which always help the person in getting to know themselves better. These two studies give a strong sense of being close to Earth – the land which we inhabit. Not to mention, the discovery that the basic elements that we find in stars, and the gas and dust around them, are the same elements that make up our bodies further deepens the connection between us and the cosmos. Dr. Robert Aitken, director of Lick Observatory, wrote a paper entitled The Use of Astronomy (1933). His last sentence summarized his sentiments towards the importance of astronomy: “To give man ever more knowledge of the universe and to help him ‘to learn humility and to know exaltation’, that is the mission of astronomy.” In the end, it’s completely up to the person about how much or which part of Astrology they wish to take as fact or just simply understand because even though it is something that is often passed off as pseudoscience (unlike astronomy), it is also about believing in the force of nature and truly feeling that the universe cares about you and your actions, and that’s a nice feeling to have.

Interview by Simarjot Wadhwa You are a daughter of a Navy Officer and do not have any media background. When did you realize you want to be in the film and TV industry ? It’s funny when I think about how I got here. I was studying economics with small ambitions of joining the civil services. In the military we have a pageant called navy queen. I randomly happen to take part in it and managed to win the crown. that pushed me to take part in miss India. It all seemed to happen as if planned by the universe. That is when the journey of being a part of this industry began. How did your education impact your decision? My education and interests that I developed back in the day have helped me be aware about mostly every happening around me. It has had an influence on every small or big decision I have taken. What was the response of your family once you revealed your choice of career? Career choices were always supposed to be academically oriented in our family. How everything got planned out in my life was very unexpected for us. But my parents have welcomed and supported every decision of mine. What led to your participation in Miss India Contest? Emotions must have been high. Please tell us about your experience of one among the finalists. I was a college girl quite away from the current trends and fashion who jumped

into miss India with no preparation. At that time I didn’t think so ahead as where will this will take me or what will I do next. It was more like the first learning process for me regarding how the world is out here. Did your name and fame in TV assist you in making your place in the film industry? How? Tv helped me a lot in giving me the experience I needed since I had no schooling or background in this field. That has worked well for me in understanding my basics better. How did LEKAR HUM DIWANA DIL become a stepping stone for establishing you as an actress? I was busy anchoring back in 2013 when leaker hum deewana dil was offered. It was first acting stint on screen. Post this I felt like exploring this side more. TV serial Dream Girl in 2015 introduced you as a debutant in the Television industry . How would you assess your two consecutive years of 2014 and 2015 in building up of your profession? 2014 was more like my transition year. Anchoring and acting are two very different jobs! While making the switch I did have a lot of difficulties to over come. But managed to sail through. After popular TV serial Haasil, you were seen as a simple Punjabi girl in Gold. It was indeed a bigger platform. What was your experience of being a part of Akshay Kumar starrer movie ? Gold has been one of the best experiences I have had.from my character preparation to being on set I have enjoyed every bit of being a part of it. It’s not easy to achieve success in the industry. Lot of conviction and endurance is required. How would you describe your journey of success? There are a lot of factors that matter. Choosing the right path can often be a longer process but you have to make friends with patience. In my case I have become more calm and have a lot of faith in almighty that everything will fall in place. What have been your special achievements? How have they influenced you as a person and your profession? Something I really take pride is the fitness regime I have created for myself. With four years of marathon running and yoga I see myself as a more determined and confident person. What are the projects you are working on these days? I am working on a film and web show right now. The path you started travelling in 2012 is an ongoing journey. Where would you like to see yourself from now onwards? It’s been a great upward journey so far. The pace can be fast or slow, I hope to see my self continue to going upwards.

Finally would you call yourself a modern Indian? If yes why and what does that mean to you? Modern to what I understand is if you can evolve yourself with time. Being aware of what I am, where I am as an Indian and being able to be at peace with that while also adapting myself with the progressive times, I could pass as a modern Indian :) ***
