COLIN CAMPBELL COOPER:

Selections from the Back Room JUNE 9 - AUGUST 5, 2007 To celebrate the conclusion of Colin Campbell Cooper ’s traveling retrospective, “East Coast/ West Coast and Beyond,” Sullivan Goss presents a selection of paintings and studies from the back room. The exhibition will include sophisticated Orientalist works, charming European scenes and intimate studies of the Santa Barbara locale. A flawless sense of color, a light touch, and a reverence for the poetic visual are hallmarks of Cooper ’s best works. These qualities are abundant in our selection. Having developed a firm grasp on Academic realism under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Cooper went on to develop a distinctive Impressionist style at the Academies Vitti, Decluse, and Julian. He refined this style over a lifetime of painting and traveling before settling in Santa Barbara in 1921. Sullivan Goss owns the Cooper estate and remains active in helping museums and private collectors with acquisitions and research. - Jeremy Tessmer, Gallery Director
