THE FALL FOUR The season changed in Santa Barbara not too long ago. They say that seasons don’t exist in Santa Barbara, but the people who live here know better. The air turned a little cooler. It rained a bit. In other parts of the country, the trees are now putting on a marvelous show. Lush green surrenders every day to browns, reds, golds and oranges. The walls of Sullivan Goss, too, are changing. We are pleased to announce four new exhibits for the Fall season: Jon Francis will celebrate his third major show of contemporary tonalist painting with us. Every year, his painterly vocabulary expands to create richer, more poetic works that remind us to search for beauty in small moments and out of the way places. Frederick Remahl (1901-1968) will rejoin the art world after a 40 year absence. This idiosyncratic Swedish American modernist developed an enigmatic and beguiling pictorial language to describe the world inside his imagination. Aristides Demetrios is one of America’s great sculptors and he lives in our own backyard. His beautifully patinated sculptures reinterpret classical and early modern forms to create metaphors about life, love, family, and contemporary social issues. Nell Brooker Mayhew (1876-1940) would be pleased to know that her“paintings on paper”are once again seducing people grown weary of things mass-produced. As an Arts & Crafts artist, her work also references Art Nouveau, Japanese print-making, and French Symbolism to redefine the California landscape and its architecture.
