KIM HOWARD
M A R C H 1 9 - M AY 1 1 , 2 0 0 5 Kim Howard summed up her philosophy on painting to me over lunch one afternoon, “These paintings aren’t about me. They’re about the people in my paintings. I want people to take notice of these people.” Lurid colors combine with bold, close-cropped compositions to force the humanity of the paintings’ subjects on to center stage. A raw energy emanates from the surface of the canvas - an artifact, perhaps, of the artist’s passion for life. She strives, above all things, to paint honestly. The effect of seeing her work is like being suddenly awakened. Life’s colors seem more intense, existence more precious. I have the sense of her great affection for the people in these paintings and of her need to bring us all into the absolute present. The characters that populate these paintings are our fellow human beings expressed boldy, joyfully, and always, tenderly.
