Favorite Show Day Tool
Sullivan’s Telfon combs are great because they really help work the hair without letting stuff get stuck to them. They are great on show day.
As Described by Kiersten Jass... What does showing with your family mean to you? Showing has always been a fun thing for me and my family. There is enough of an age gap between my sister and I that we really never bickered. We were always there to support each other and help with whatever the other one needed. Showing has always been a great bonding time with my family and I. The year we drove 18 hours to Texas for junior nationals was a blast. Favorite Show Day Product: Sullivan’s Shock is a great product to use on show day. It isn’t oily like other show day hair care products, and it’s great for summer shows because you get a lot of pop and shine without added heat. Favorite breed: Simmental. We have been showing Simmentals at junior nationals and regionals since 2013 and they are easily my favorite breed. Favorite stock show: The North American in Louisville is my favorite show. I have been successful there in having the Reserve SimAngus Female and it is just a great show that many of the big breeders go to with their big time heifers. Favorite College/University: Iowa State University Who are your role models?: My dad is my role model. He taught me everything that I know today. What was the best part of your win at Junior Nationals last year?: The best part of winning big at junior nationals last year was that it was close to home and my entire family was there and got a chance to see it happen and celebrate afterwards. Proudest accomplishment: My proudest accomplishment was winning Reserve Grand Champion Purebred Heifer at the 2016 American Junior Simmental Association National Classic, which was the largest National Classic ever. Daily care tip: Never slack. All the days that you slack off will eventually catch up to you. Future goals: I plan to graduate from Iowa State University with a Degree in Animal Science and Agronomy. I would like to get a job in ag sales either on the pharmaceutical side or with seed. I also want to continue showing cattle and building my herd. What does being on the American Junior Simmental Association Board mean to you? I love the Simmental breed and I have been a member for fourteen years so it’s great to finally be able to serve as a trustee and help mentor the younger members.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped me along with way…the list is really too long to name. However, I would like to thank my entire family including my Uncle Steve, my grandparents, and especially my mom and sister. Finally I would like to thank Cole and Kyle Greiman and Aaron Siek. I have always been impressed with the work ethic of the Jass family. They have always been successful and do all the work themselves, as a family. Kiersten is a great showman, but more importantly a great person.

Reserve Champion Purebred Heifer 2016 American Jr. Simmental Assn National Classic
As Described by Madison Ratliff... Favorite breed: Limousin – I have shown other breeds, but Limousin is definitely my favorite. Favorite stock show: I love junior nationals in the summer time because it is a great chance to spend a week with all my friends from other states. I also like the American Royal because I usually get to show on my birthday.
Favorite Feed Supplement
We fed Sullivan’s Fresh and Feminine to our heifer and we felt like it really helped keep her front end together and keep her looking clean and fresh. I really like Fresh and Feminine.
Favorite hobby when you’re not showing: I am a huge family person and we all always like to do things together. So really anything family oriented is my hobby. Who are your role models?: I really look up to my two sisters, Morgan and Cheyenne. They inspired me to show cattle and growing up I wanted to be just like them. I would also have to say my father, he grew up showing and encouraged me to show and I always want to make him proud. What was the best part of your win this year?: This year was my very first year to attend the North American in Louisville, and to win Supreme Champion Heifer there was amazing. I also loved getting to experience that with all my family and friends. Favorite Show Day Tool: I feel like the most important tool is Sullivan’s Air Express III Blower. It helps pop the hair and get ready for the show. What is your show day ritual? I don’t really have any specific show day rituals, but when we started showing my mom would take the camera and we would never do very good. Then when she would leave it at home we would be successful. My mom is superstitious about her camera so she always leaves it at home. Proudest accomplishment: My proudest accomplishment was being able to win junior nationals and Louisville in the same year with the same heifer. It is something that my family and I think is very special. Favorite Daily Care Tool: I never go to the barn without a Sullivan’s Smart Sensation Brush. It is great to work and grow hair. Daily care tip: Wash your cattle daily with Sullivan’s Vita Hair Volumizer Shampoo. It helps to keep the hair clean and hydrated. Future goals: This fall I will begin my sophomore year at Butler Community College and from there I want to continue my degree in Animal Science at Kansas State University. My goal within the cattle industry to allow my kids the chance to show cattle and experience everything I have been able to. This is a great industry with great opportunity to meet new people.
I would like to thank my parents for always being there for us and for driving us to the shows. I would also like to thank my Grandpa Ratliff and Grandma and Grandpa Foltz for all their support. Finally, I would like to thank Raymond Gonnet for all his help with my heifer last year. The Ratliff family are terrific cattle breeders and producers of high quality bulls and females for the commercial and seedstock industry, but still know how to get it done in the show ring.
Supreme Champion Female 2016 North American International Livestock Expo
As Described by Austin Nowatzke... Favorite Show Day Product Sullivan’s Vita Hair Volumizer is a great shampoo to use if you want to give your calves hair a fuller, more healthy look.
Favorite daily barn tool: Sullivan’s Smart Scrub Brush is easily my favorite daily barn tool. You can use it at the wash rack and while blowing your calf out to help work hair. Favorite breed: Angus Favorite stock show: My favorite major livestock show is the North American in Louisville, but I also love the National Junior Angus Show every summer. Favorite hobby when you’re not showing: Playing Soccer. I’m on two teams right now. Favorite Memory from Showing: The first time that I won the National Junior Angus Show when all my friends and family got to be there to win it. Favorite College/University: Purdue University Most embarrassing moment: Two years ago the heifer I was showing didn’t really like me. She kept head butting me and hit my showstick. It went flying and landed about five feet away from me. Who are your role models?: Cash Langford, my dad Barry Nowatzke, Jon Sweeney and Ricky Bobby What is your show day ritual? One Team One Dream Favorite Show Day Product: Sullivan’s Tail Adhesive is a must on show day. It works really well on our cattle to keep the hair in place and then it doesn’t melt no matter how hot it gets. What was the best part of your win at the American Royal this year?: I loved everything about it. The overwhelming support for me and everyone congratulating me. It was a good feeling when the hard work had paid off. Proudest accomplishment: Raising as many Angus as we have while winning the Angus Junior National. All the hard work has paid off. Daily care tip: Working with Sullivan’s Rice Root Brushes and use a Sullivan’s Smart Scrub Brush. Future goals: To eventually have an Angus production sale, keep showing. I was to go to Purdue University and major in engineering.
Thank you to everyone and my dad that has helped me along the way and supported along the years. One of the most elite show families in America. I have a lot of respect for Nowatzke’s commitment to maternally made females. No one loves Angus more than Austin, but it is also widely known that he loves a good Shorthorn too.
Supreme Champion Heifer 2016 American Royal Livestock Show
As Described by Tommy Glover... Favorite daily barn tool: The Sullivan’s Stimulator Fluffer Comb. I like working hair with it on all my calves. Favorite breed: Chi. This is the breed I have had the most success with in the show ring. Favorite stock show: Oklahoma Youth Expo because I like the barn set up with the big walls in between the calves so they don’t get spooked. I also like the grand drive with the limo ride and all the fireworks. Favorite hobby when you’re not showing: I really love playing basketball. Favorite College/University: Oklahoma State University. They have good academics and a good agriculture program. Who are your role models?: Michael Jordan, because if you don’t mess up you don’t know how to win. What was the best part of your win at the Oklahoma Youth Expol this year?: Right after the grand drive. The feeling of accomplishing my goal; it was great. I had the most fun winning that. I have always dreamed of winning OYE, and it has always been a big goal of mine. Proudest accomplishment: Winning OYE. That has always been a goal of mine. Daily care tip: A rice root brush and a little elbow grease. Future goals: My future goal is to win the Oklahoma Youth Expo twice and then go to college for either Math or Agriculture. Favorite Show Day Tool: Sullivan’s Tail Adhesive – it is the quickest, most effective way to get a calf ready. It dries the fastest.
I would like to thank Clint McCauley, my father, mom, the Lucky Strike crew, my sister, Coley Riley, Shane Sturgeon and the rest of the team. To my parents, thank you for giving me a chance to do what I have done. It’s been a good year. I thank the good Lord, we’ve been blessed. Tommy has been able to win many elite steer shows at a young age. This talented young man comes from a high caliber family and has a very bright future in and out of the show ring.
Grand Champion Steer 2017 Oklahoma Youth Expo
Favorite Show Day Product I really like Sullivan’s Shock, especially on show day or when we are clipping calves. We put it on after sheening. It seems to keep them clean and electrifies the hair.
As Described by Iowa State University Judging Coach Chris Cassady... Favorite Judging Contest: On a personal note my favorite is the American Royal. In college, every time I judged there I was high individual and my team was high team. Now as a coach I really enjoy the national contest in Louisville. Tell us about your judging camp: Being new at this job I really wanted to hit it hard this year and bring interest back to the program in Iowa. There are really good livestock people in the Midwest and I wanted to create a camp that kids could come to, and get excited about networking, judging, making their herd better and the whole livestock industry as a whole. We have sixty kids from seven states this year and we want attendees to come expecting to be exposed to different people with different ideas and thought processes on the industry. At our camp, judging is secondary. We want kids to get exposed to life off the farm. What made you want to become a livestock judging coach? I was fortunate that when I started showing I was involved in many different species and had a great ag teacher that really encouraged me to get involved and judge. I knew that I wanted to make an impact on the industry, but I’m not a big research guy, I knew I probably wouldn’t discover the next big genetic technology. Junior college is really when I developed a huge interest in teaching. Now I love being able to expose my students to different ideas. Who are your role models? I have two big role models, the first being my dad. My dad self-sacrificed so that we could have everything that he didn’t growing up. If I can give my kids even half of what he gave me I will be very happy. My second role model is Gary Dameron. He took over the family farm at a very young age because his father passed away, and he has managed to turn a commercial operation into a prominent, purebred Angus operation. Tell us the importance of family in your life? I grew up the youngest of three boys. We all grew up in the show cattle industry and were very competitive, but after high school we all went separate ways. One of my brothers has a history degree, the other a liberal arts degree, and I have my ag degree. As different as we all are, we complement each other very well and push each other to be better. On July 1st, my son will turn one-year-old and he is awesome. You take children for granted, but they really do change your life for the better. I am excited to raise my son in this industry and to see what genetics will be like when he is older. What is your background in showing cattle? A lot of people don’t know that I actually started showing Shorthorns. While I am now known more for my connection with Angus cattle, my family had Shorthorns until the mid-90’s. We began investing in the Angus breed and the cattle at Dameron Angus, and turned our herd of ten Angus cows into a herd of seventy-five purebred cows that utilize all the latest reproductive technologies. What is something important that prospective livestock judges should know? A lot of kids that want to judge come from a livestock show background and that is the only way they see the industry. Not every animal is a show heifer or steer. I always say that good show animals have to be good, real world animals. I would also say that you are never too good to keep learning. Trends change all the time and you have to be willing to learn the new stuff.
Chris with wife Katie and son Beau.
Chris and Iowa State Judging Team at the 2016 American Royal Chris judging with Jeff Dameron at the National Western
Chris is doing a fantastic job at Iowa State University and is one of the most talented livestock evaluators in the industry. On top of all of his accomplishments, Chris is genuinely one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
As Described by Mikala Grady... Favorite daily barn tool: The Sullivan’s Smart Comb is my favorite barn tool. It is great to work hair with and I like the exchangeable blades. Favorite breed: Crossbred What is your favorite part about major shows? Getting to show all the animals and being in the different atmosphere. I like how each one of them puts it on. Favorite hobby when you’re not showing: We raise Thoroughbred race horses. I like to go to the track and watch them run. Favorite College/University: Texas A&M Most embarrassing moment: My first show was a jackpot in Stephenville and I got my hair caught in a fan. Who are your role models? Rosie Napravnik and Joe Sharp. Rosie is a professional jockey and has won a lot. I admire her because she impacted the sport from a women’s point of view. Show Day Ritual: I have a pair of Nike socks that I wear the day before the show that have crazy colors on them and then on show day I have a pair of tie dye socks that I have won the majors in. What is your favorite memory from all your success this year? This year alone what I’ve done major show wise this show season. It was pretty incredible. Daily care tip: The main thing is keep your cattle clean. We wash a couple times a week and rinse every day. We blow them out every day at least. The main thing is keep your cattle clean, the cleaner they are, better we feel. Future goals: Become a vet. I would like to intern under Raul Bras or Billy Russel. As for shows, I want to give them a run for the money at all of them, I don’t have one specifically.
I would like to thank my parents because they put up everything and bought me the best animals they could find. They have been a huge part to my success. Then I would like to thank Bobby and Mandi Maddox, they have been a big part to my success. They have made me better as a showman. Everybody behind the scene are a big part to my success this year and hopefully all the years to come.
The Grady family has had a tremendous run at the majors this past year. Mikala’s intense showmanship skills are an asset for this team.

Grand Champion Bull, 2016 Atlantic National ROV Angus Show - Hurlbut OSU Final Exam 5130
Breeding Program: As a family, we breed Angus cattle at different locations throughout the Midwest. We strive to produce some of the top genetics in the country, and hold a production sale each year. Biggest Challenge: As with every family operation, finances play a role in business challenges. This is our livelihood, so we must be successful at raising and showing our cattle in order to generate income. Favorite daily barn tool: Sullivan’s Rice root brush, Sullivan’s Smart Sensation, Sullivan’s Kleen Sheen. “I’m old school, so you can’t beat a good rice root brush, but the Smart Sensation is among our top tools in the barn. The Sullivan’s Smart Sensation is great for daily hair care, getting down to the skin while ensuring no hair is left behind.” Favorite stock show: The National Western Stock Show is by far our favorite show. We consider it to be the last true stock show. You will see every segment of the industry there including show steers, herd bulls, and seedstock cattle. Future Goals: Continue to raise high quality seedstock cattle, both show cattle and production cattle. We hope to continue our genetic impact on the Angus breed.
2007-2008 American Angus Assoc. Show Bull of the Year, Grand Champion Angus Bull, 2008 NWSS Sankeys Lazer 609 of 6N
Favorite Champion: Sankeys Justified 101. We raised his sire, Sankeys Lazer 609 of 6N, and his dam, Sankeys Erica 525. Both Justified and his sire, Lazer, won the National Western Stock Show Angus Show, and were named American Angus Assoc. Roll of Victory Show Bull of the Year. My sister, Jeana Hurlbut, and I are very thankful for our parents, and their dedication to our futures. Growing up, we never missed a junior show and our parents never spared any expense when it came to our passion. Thousands of miles and many years were spent in a pickup traveling to shows across the country. We are grateful for their support. It is pretty impressive how long the Sankey family has been raising nationally competitive seedstock. It is obvious that this family knows how to raise tremendous animals. The Sankeys are also accomplished livestock judges, an elite set of knowledge runs in the family.
