‘Architecture begins with the creation of experience, it is a conversation between the user and the space.’ Here I present to you a collection of works which has been formed through learning and exploring the field during the academic years so far. The projects have been selected to exhibit the diversity in scale and intent.
Suman Kumari
Hello, I am Suman, a fourth-year architecture student. Architecture for me is the experience of a space. The conversation between the context and the site, built and the unbuilt, space and the users, communities and timeline, together makes this experience memorable. This relation motivates me to learn about different factors that contribute to making these experiences. I further enjoy bringing these ideas on paper via sketching or painting.

2020 | Urban Furniture Design| Archdias Competition | Group of 3
A bench in a park is a go-to seating solution. It houses different activities apart from just seating, throughout the day. Different user groups use it differently. But is a simple bench context ready? What if the bench instead of just hosting the activities, became a part of the interaction? See-Mee is an attempt to give the modular urban bench, an organic and sculptural look. It aims at becoming a part of user interaction with the other user, which is achieved by moulding the backrest, seating and incorporating multiple reflection principle of mirrors. The placement of benches with convex mirrors creates interesting figures, which the people perceive with their emotions.

FORM EVOLUTION There are different kinds of people using benches in a park - people who want to interact with others actively by mingling with them and people who choose to be passive observers. The two bench designs have evolved to respect the personal preferences of these people. These benches have therefore been placed in two circles. The outermost circle always has A-type benches and the inner circles, which can be many in number may have all benches as type B or a combination of A and B - types. The B-type benches placed on the inner circle of the arrangement have their backrest merging with the seat in the centre so it promotes more visibility and interactivity. On the outer ring are benches of the A-type that provide privacy for users. These are the people who enjoy being in a park but do not want to be bothered by others. On the other hand, the seat on the opposite side of this piece involves the user participating in interactions with strangers. The arrangement clearly can be reorganised and the more benches, the better the play of mirrors gets.

2 THE FOLIATE
2019 | Fashion Pavilion | Arch-Dias | Millan Competition | Group of 3
foliate adjective: decorated with leaves or leaflike motives What dressing is to an individual, architecture is to a space. Both provide identity. Milan being one of the most iconic fashion capitals in the world, inspires people from all around the globe to create their fashion their identity. The brief aimed to design a pop-up pavilion in the emblematic Parco Sempione in Milan that connects fashion, architecture and people. The Foliate infuses fashion in the surrounding with the help of architecture physically and poetically, creating a structure that can host different events and activate the zone. Having a strong silhouette, and form, the structure creates the much-required drama to eventually become an iconic landmark of the city.

SITE Parco Sempione, the largest part of the city of Milan is hosted as the site for the project. The location is chosen next to the waterbody which lies on the central path between Arco della Pace and Pizza d’Armi. The water body perfectly mimics the design to provide a bilateral symmetry along with adding to the design’s tranquillity. Arco della Pace

LEAF CLUSTER
FORM ARRANGEMENT
Form Evolution The evolution of this design can be traced back to the history of the evolution of fashion in brief. Clustering the leaf-like forms and the dramatic angles of leaflets of varying height is been supported by the steel rods which are parametric and can easily be assembled and disassembled. Further, these are woven with threads that allow the light and air to pass through them partially, giving the user a sense of lining inside a piece of fashion itself. To enhance the drama ahead, loose pieces of soft fabric ropes have been suspended in which the users of their creations can be installed.
RIGIDITY Steel members
The place is designed to host multiple formal and informal activities ranging from everyday fashion exhibitions to sitting and jamming with friends. The lights which are lowered from the top add to the dynamic nature of the form and further extends the usage of the icon. WEAVING Threads

3 INFINITY LIVING 2021 | Housing | Secundverabad Academics | Individual
Cramped life in a city centre- both indoors and outdoors, the pollution and the never-ending race, has pushed some people to move towards suburban regions, where they enjoy the vastness of the open spaces with breathable indoors. Infinity living has been designed to cater to the housing shortages in the suburban area due to the sudden increase in migration from the city centre. The design aims to increase the interaction among people, connection with nature and space. The site has a park and a seasonal water body on either side, which brings in the natural breeze and magnificent view. The project has been interwoven with community interaction spaces of various scales at different levels, which eventually will enchant happiness and healthy living in the society.

Form Evolution
Infinity living has been shaped by respecting and addressing the challenges posed by the context, climate, neighbourhood and site. Further, it ensures that every dwelling unit in the project has been provided with enough space, views and opportunities to interact within the family, neighbours, and the project itself. Lastly, the addition of bridges has helped conserve the through and through views from the road, pre-existing garden and the water body.

The balconies of the project are designed to remove the social gap between the neighbourhoods which the modern-day building have made into a norm. The staggered, rhythmic arrangement not only provides the residents with views but acts as an extention to their home and bridges the gap between the open and close spaces.

4 MANSA
2019 | Residential | Raghurajpur Academics | Individual
mansa Hindi, adjective: according to mind Moving away from urban life in search of the calmness and tranquillity of the rural lifestyle attracts most of us. Our clients, according to the brief, are designers from Mumbai who desire the same. Also, they wish to establish their creative startup in Raghurajpur, a village in Bhuvneshwar, Odisha. But coming from a fast-paced, technology addicted life in a city, will the couple be able to enjoy the raw nature of the village? Or will they require to blend the two worlds into one? The site having water bodies on the two sides extended the possibilities of creative creation. The project hence has been separated into two parts to address the personal and the professional life of the couple. Further, the residential segment has been detailed with working drawings.
The design focuses on energy efficiency in architecture and while amalgamating the urban and the rural lifestyle. The presence of two lakes on the site helps create and nurture the microenvironment, which further has been used in the project to bring in the natural cool breeze. The two parts of the project - the workshop and the house have a through and through passage for air movement and permeability from the centre of the site to either lake. This helped in creating a visual connection with the water bodies from any point on the site.

5 HAJONG TRIBE 2019 | Documentation Academics | Group of 6
Hajong ‘ha’ means earth and ‘jong’ means insect. The tribe has an ingrained association with the land, hence the name. They are located around the hills of Garo and Khasi in Eastern India, majorly Meghalaya and Assam. This vernacular study was an attempt to understand and document the lifestyle, beliefs, customs of the tribe. The study also aimed at recognise the building materials, construction techniques and the influence of various factors which has resulted in the present day architecture. Further, the observations and learnings were documented with sketches and hand renders.
CULTURE Women go for fishing and use a traditional equipment called ‘Jakha’ made of woven bamboo.
The folk dances of the Hajongs are colourful and are complimented by their folk music. They have reflected their struggle for exsistence, their attitude towards nature and child like wonder of seeing symbols change. Their dances are a sacred act of thier belief in evil spirits.
Farming is the most fruitful occupation in the tribe which is often done on the individually owned lands. Bamboo is also used to make different household items apart from being used in the construction.
Cloth weaving is one of the highlights of the tribe. Women wear a traditiional colourful red dress called ‘Pathin’ with red blouse. The men wear ‘Ningti’ and gamsa. Every family owns a loom known as ‘bana’ or ‘tath’.
