SAFE GREEN SPACE 2021

1 Brief 4

" Peace comes from the inner space " by Erik Erikson (1902-1994).

" Human beings have an instinct to get close to the natural world and a desire to come into contact with other life forms " by E.O. Wilson, Biophilia Hypothesis (1984). Plants have been a part of the human condition throughout few million years ago, they play an important role in human evolution, plants support lots of things that people’s need, we got food, fresh air and energy to live from plants, but does our relationship with plants just stop at the substance-using? Dose human can have interacted with plants and get a positive mental effect from them? This project research synthesizes some of the extant literature and visual work on people-plant interactions, and from the perspective of visual workers, try to use nature as the starting point, combining the concept of coexistence of plants and humans and the positive psychological influence to create visual works that can reduce fatigue and restore the spirit. 5

Target Audience 7

3 Prototype It’s time to relax,,and get a far far far travel with these Friends. Overall, there are two parts of my project, one of that which is green house, it is a main animation scene is floating in the space capsule of the universe, and there are a total of three areas. 1 Subtropical zone 2 Temperate zone 3 Frigid zone These three areas also represent the inner changes of the protagonist who just embarked on the journey, and this part can be felt through the accompaniment producing by music producer.

4. Key contact JK Deer is a new generation of a music composers in Taiwan in the 20s. We know each other because of mutual friends. Among the relaxing factors mentioned earlier, music is the common answer for many people. I showed him my project concept and draft illustrations and asked him to tailor an animated soundtrack for me.

We spent nearly three weeks discussing the music style and overall direction. And made many demos to get as close as possible to the atmosphere that I want to express. He is a very talented artist. He is good at using hearing to give the audience a visual feast. By listening to his works, you can outline the whole picture in your mind. Thank him a lot.

5. Outcome 14

The story tells the protagonist who wants to escape from a messy's life.

One day he came found some green life that he never seen before. These magical life forms bring him peace and tranquillity that he has never had before.

15

While obsessed with these cute things, he worried about staying on this planet. His relationship with them will be destroyed.

So he put the only remaining plants on the planet on the spacecraft, set off alone and finally find a blank planet. The spaceship landed there, he planted plants on the planet, and he used them as part of the fertilizer. 16

And he, live with his green partner forever.

THE BOAT SPACE

1 Brief

For this project, my initial inspiration is a method of offering sacrifices to the dead from Greek mythology, I research the traditional story about this point, and watched some movies about the theme of life and death. For my story development, I want to describe the death by a warm way, so I reference the Charon pier form the Greek mythology as my story structure and which is the main place of the story. In this module, I tried to tell the story by changing the picture instead of dialogue. The basis of the story was about waiting for the boat, but I tried to create multiple characters to increase the complexity of waiting for the boat. And produced a simple comic book in final outcome.

19

2 Prototype A. Story structure My story draft is waiting for the boat. It is a simple storyline and I reference the boatman Chroan's story from Greek mythology, base on death, people went to this unnamed pier and waited for a boat to pick up them. Personaly, I want to make my story much focus on these passengers, not the Charon, so the boatman Charon is a bystander in my story.

B. What is necessary? The elements needed to compose a story are people, things, time, and places

a. Character ( People ) My story is a simple narrative base such as buy a ticket and wating boat , I gonna put more detail into this action and present a complete story. Therefore, character design is very important for my story. I made a table to sort out the characters I might use, as well as the details about them. I think I will increase the more characters according to my story planning and progress. Drafts of roles and key objects

Charismatic characters are the key to good storytelling. When I discussed the plot of the story with my tutor, I discussed how to make the characters more attractive. And the " body language" is an effective and obvious way to inject the soul of a virtual character.

21

b. Place Changing the location in one story may complicate the story. I want to focus on the performance of the characters, so my story place does not change over time. The unmanned dock on the sea is the only place where things happen.

Draft showing the dock.

c. Time The long timeline is also a reason for the complexity of the story. Therefore, in my time planning, I only record what happened on this pier one day.

d. Things ( What the charcter doing? ) The most important thing in my story is waiting for the boat, which is also the only way to promote the passage of time for my story. To add interest to the story, I plan to try to add some elements that can enrich the character's personality in this behaviour. For example, I have a character who is a gentle old lady. She may be kind while waiting for the boat, but she will keep talking about her previous love story, never stop speaking even her boat coming. On the contrary, another snobbish woman may come to the dock with a grumpy temper but is unwilling to talk to other people. For this character, I may work hard on the character design and use visual language to show the audience her personality traits. grummpy woman

Draft showing the waiting boat.

e. Object ( The key items in story ) In the feedback of the initial research, my classmate suggested that I can do indepth research and design development of the two coins that pay for the ticket. But I think the design of the gold coin may not intuitively show the targeted role, and because the object is small, it may not be obvious. There is a boat image in front of ticket.

So I designed different ferry tickets to correspond to different characters. This is also a clue in the story. The ferry tickets do not directly show the appearance of the characters. I hope that the audience can use the ship styles printed on different ticket rolls. And time, infer the different boarding times of each character and their identities.

There are some boarding rules be printed on back of ticket.

ticket draft

The boat is also a key point in my story. The ships in different styles show different personality traits, and the souls in the story have a boat belonging to them. Those boats will lead them to heaven or hell.

C.Narrative I plan to usepictures to tell the story without dialogue,I think I should focus on character design and clear storytelling (storyboard). Without a narrative in words, I hope that the audience can explain the story through pictures based on their own experience and values. This should be a big challenge for me, because I may not be able to understand or be interested in the work due to unclear visual performance.

Sustainable

1 Brief This project is talking about sustainability with river. In this module base on Kingston MA course. I investigated the environment and history around the Hogsmill River and found the existing problems of Hogsmill River such as there were chemical pollution happened in 2019 and some effect has happened already. I set the specific problem that I want to identify, and studied the solution of other similar cases with some secondary researches, based on them, I posit the volunteer of the protecting river as the starting point, and set my target audiences as the people who interesting in volunteer activities, and conducted a data survey based on this,I made a questionnaire investigations for two weeks, and made the trifold booklets for recruited volunteers as my learning outcome.

48

2 Content How do I design the content of booklet? I designed a questionnaire for develop my booklet content. Based on my investigations and some sketching observations, I found that volunteering was a key point in river protection, so I deiced to make volunteering my starting point for my learning outcome. I designed a questionnaire and started a survey on the direction of what people think about volunteering activities to be a base for my booklet contents. The age of my survey group is concentrated between 20 to 30 years old, no matter of gender which was my target audience as well. The questionnaire that I designed was a phased and sequenced manner, it starts with some general questions about volunteer experience and activity reports, and as the result, those data supported me to complete the " river volunteer hiring " booklet successfully, and extend other sustainable activity designing development.

Morris Tatto Design 1 Brief About this project is a creation collection which base on Kingston university art&design colloage and Storybox Collective which is a group of people working on new projects inspired by William Morris' design and art. This project invites the students to do the same and research about William Morris and the concept of naturalism as well. In this project, I focus on Morris’s esthetics and naturalism for my learning research, I focus my research and development on Morris's art design, through on ethnic decorative tattoos, I learned that some tribal groups respect the use of tattoos to respect nature. This is similar to Morris’ concept of naturalism, and I also use this to develop my learning outcome: the artist book for the tattooist.

A business card made with the font that I designed.

2. Tatoo craft book I designed a tattoo art book (catalogue) inspired by William Morris. The content contains tattoo patterns, symbols and words patterns designed using flowers and plants in this book. I hope this catalogue brings some afflatus to tattoo workers and customers who are interested in tattoos for choice of tattoo patterns and design new one as well.

55

The conversation between human and nature is my main concept. The first part of this book is design of tattoos is centred between plants and human organs, the patterns I designed are integrated into a manual catalogue, and these patterns are scanned into electronic files, which can be used as commercial designs, such as business card or logo design.

56

3 Content a. font & symbol design I designed 26 English letters (including uppercase and lowercase). The source of the font is William Morris’s art font. It is a product of the THE ART & CRAFTS MOVEMENT period. They all emphasize decoration in the design style, and the font of this period The main form characteristics of the design are also reflected in this aspect. I followed his philosophy to combine text and curvy patterns in a crowded manner, and show the roughness of the handwork of the book, abandon the smoothness of contemporary fonts, and retain the woodcut font style of the craft period.
