Message from Vice Chancellor

The vision of the University of Moratuwa is to be “the most globally recognized Knowledge Enterprise in Asia”. Within this vision our immediate mission is to “produce world class graduates in an environment that provides rewarding experience for its students and staff”. We therefore believe that it is our responsibility to equip properly for a life which is rewarding in every sense of those who have chosen our University for their higher education. Hence, our aim is to produce world class graduates who are academically sound, self confident, flexible, internationally recognized quality graduates able to “hit the ground running” from day one. In other words, the objective of the University is to equip our students to be “job creators” and not necessarily “job seekers” when they graduate so that they realize their true potential by studying together and thereafter working together as professionals towards the development of our country. We are confident that we have achieved our objective with our fashion design students. 6

I congratulate both staff and students, of the Fashion Design and Product Development degree program at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology for organising the sixth Graduation Fashion Show. Message from Head of Department

The Department of Textile & Clothing Technology of the University of Moratuwa is widely regarded as the pioneer institution for Textile Education in Sri Lanka. It offers two degree programmes, the BSc Engineering degree and BDesign in Fashion Design and Product Development. The B Design in Fashion Design and Product Development (FDPD) programme aims at creating and developing concepts to products that optimize the function, value and appearance of apparel for the benefit of both local and export apparel manufacturers. To meet the global competition, the Sri Lankan export apparel industry needs to add value to their products through innovative and creative designs. Students are exposed to a wide range of instruction in market research, concept development, design methodology, prototyping, and computer aided design. The Department prepares students through industrial training and industrial projects which offer an invaluable opportunity to work with design experts in the industry to generate innovative fashion design solutions. Students also may gain unique insights into design through the annual Graduation Fashion Show, which not only showcases the talents of the young designers, thus providing industry with a glimpse of what is available to them. In addition it gives younger aspiring designers an opportunity to see the work of their seniors. 8

This is the sixth graduation batch of Fashion Design degree students that will present their Cat Walk collections - 2011 on 13th November 2011. The flat work and portfolio developments of the design graduands will be exhibited at the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology, University of Moratuwa and is open to the public from 15th to 17th November 2011. I congratulate all the young designers who have displayed their talents in the today’s show. I would also like to congratulate those who have been successful in completing their course of study, even though they could not make it to the final list for the catwalk.

Dr. G.L.D. Wickramasinghe Head of Department

Message from Course Director

‘Fashion Design Education to sustain and uplift the Apparel Export industry’ Design education in Sri Lanka was a long felt need in the Apparel Export industry that came into fruition with the commencement of the Fashion Design & Product Development Degree at the University of Moratuwa. The programme has matured through the years and has become one of the most popular degree courses where any student with good grades in any three subjects at GCE A Levels can join. The course curriculum was introduced under a consultancy from the London College of Fashion of the University of the Arts, London who are well known Fashion Design educators in the world. At a time when Design leads manufacturing and Design means business, Sri Lanka would have lost an opportunity without having a University degree that trains human resources in this discipline. This programme provides an opening to unleash the potential of the talented graduates to create new and innovative designs to be able to thrive in the business in the future and to transform the industry from the present to one that is Design driven.

The well established degree now produces 40 Designers each year, who are able to offer the Design, the Product Development and the Product Differentiation to suit the overseas markets. This trend has triggered the awareness and development of Design in the Country in many spheres paving the way for greater Entrepreneurship and small businesses to expand.

Message from Chairman and Chief Executive of EDB

I am pleased to contribute this message to the occasion of the “Graduation Fashion Show 2011” to be held on 13th November 2011. The Sri Lanka Export Development Board being the apex organization of the Government of Sri Lanka entrusted with the responsibility of development and promotion of Sri Lanka’s exports, is happy to be associated with this important event with the University of Moratuwa. Fashion apparel is one of the most important sectors in the clothing industry. The Designer forms an important part of the apparel industry when new markets are approached and new products are brought into the market and therefore, It is imperative that professional designers are employed by the apparel industry. The EDB has identified the apparel sector as a primary focus area with a projected target of US $ 4.0 bn. The sector is the most significant and dynamic contributor to Sri Lanka’s exports contributing around 40% of total exports. Although the quality achieved by the Sri Lankan apparel exporters is world class, one has to keep in mind that the world fashion market changes rapidly. Thus, it has become vital to develop all aspects of the supply chain where design plays an important role, in order to succeed and sustain the market position. Keeping in line with this strategy, EDB join hands with the University of Moratuwa to organize the ‘Graduation Fashion Show’. 10

Our objective is to link the apparel industry leaders to the professional and talented designers, produced by the University of Moratuwa. The Graduation Fashion Show is an ideal opportunity for doing this. I am confident that the Show will undoubtedly pave the way for the apparel industrialists to meet, see and select the best design talents. This would no doubt encourage new talents to get into the industry. It is expected that the entire apparel sector would benefit through this event, which in turn will result in enhancing foreign exchange earnings to the country and increasing employment opportunities. I would like to place on record my appreciation to the staff and students as well as other stakeholders of “Graduation Fashion Show” for their commitment in enhancing fashion design in Sri Lanka and wish the design graduates success in their future endeavours.

Janaka Ratnayake Chairman and Chief Executive of EDB
