Become a Volunteer Volunteering at Summa Health is just a part of Sam Fiorentino’s weekly routine. Sam has been a volunteer with us for more than two years. Currently, he is a Wayfinding Volunteer at our Main Info Desk. He worked in the dairy industry from 1982 up until the time he retired in 2020. When Sam was asked why he chose to volunteer after retiring, he said, “I’ve always wanted to volunteer. When I retired, I had the chance to finally give back and help others; it’s very satisfying to me.” The Akron Campus is in need of other volunteers, like Sam, who want to help people and make new friends. A few of our volunteer benefits include: free meals, free parking and flexible schedules.

I’m being more precise on how I want to live my life. – Gwendolyn Hayes-Wright, Neurology Patient
Surviving a Brain Aneurysm Delivers New Outlook on Life When Gwendolyn Hayes-Wright went to Summa Health in early 2021 for a magnetic resonance imaging procedure (MRI) she was shocked to learn she had a brain aneurysm (a bulge or ballooning of the blood vessels in the brain). “I was there for something completely unrelated that required an MRI,” she says. “When they told me I had an aneurysm, I didn’t believe it.” Gwendolyn hadn’t been experiencing any headaches or other symptoms that would have alerted her to the aneurysm’s existence. It was only at the insistence of her primary care physician that she made an appointment to see Summa Health neurointerventional surgeon, Aashish Anand, M.D.
Dr. Anand discussed various surgical options and recommended an endovascular flow diversion procedure that doesn’t require open surgery. Using a catheter inserted in Gwendolyn’s groin, he navigated through the blood vessels to reach the brain and deploy a flow-diverter device across the neck of the aneurysm. The procedure would safely secure the aneurysm while maintaining blood flow in an important brain artery that originated from the neck of the aneurysm.
Dr. Anand confirmed that Gwendolyn had a brain aneurysm and discussed in detail the risk of the aneurysm rupturing.
Now fully recovered, Gwendolyn says she doesn’t have to look over her shoulder anymore.
“On a scale of one to five, he said my aneurysm was a three,” says Gwendolyn. “If it got any worse, there’s a chance I wouldn’t be here. I wasn’t going to take that chance.”
“I’m being more precise on how I want to live my life,” she says. “You don’t know when your time is up. Thanks to Dr. Anand and his team, I feel good.”
Gwendolyn was impressed with the detailed diagrams and explanations provided by Dr. Anand. “He was like a professor,” she says. “He showed me my scans and diagrams so I could visualize what he was talking about. He explained everything. I realized I would be a fool not to take care of this.” 4

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
What is PTSD? Following these types of events, a person may experience: Re-experiencing or reliving the event Avoidance of reminders of the event Increase in negative thoughts and feelings Hyper-arousal (which can involve feeling on edge, anger/irritability, poor quality of sleep, and reckless or self-destructive behavior) Through trauma treatment with a trained professional (like a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, social worker, or marriage and family therapist), a person can learn strategies and skills to promote recovery and to reengage in life with a feeling of confidence and safety.
is a condition resulting from life-threatening events such as sexual or physical assault, child sexual or physical abuse, serious accidents (like a motor vehicle accident), natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or combat and other military experiences. PTSD can occur at any age and emerge long after the traumatic event or series of events has taken place. Support and connection are critically important in recovering from PTSD.
Things you can do to support someone recovering from trauma: Text or reach out by phone to let them know you are thinking of them and are available to listen Offer to go to the doctor with them Invite them to engage in enjoyable activities while understanding it may be difficult for them to navigate crowds or leave their homes Ask them what type of help they would like to receive, and listen to them with an open mind

Keeping Heart Healthy Some people are born with heart problems (congenital) while others develop cardiac issues over time, often due to poor lifestyle choices. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among older adults in the United States, but your risk for it can be reduced through lifestyle modification and medication. On average, someone in the U.S. dies of cardiovascular disease
every 36 seconds Types of Heart Disease
Risk Factors While some risk factors that contribute to heart disease are out of your control, like your race, gender, age, ethnicity and family history, there are many others that you can manage like:
The most common forms of heart disease include:
Getting 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise at least five days a week.
• Coronary artery disease – blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle that can cause a heart attack
Eating a diet that combines healthy fats, lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and lots of fruits and vegetables.
• Heart failure – an enlarged heart that pumps ineffectively • Heart valve disease – heart valves that don’t open or close properly disrupting blood flow from the heart to the body • Heart rhythm disorders – disorganized beating that causes the heart to stop or beat abnormally due to faulty electrical signals

PrecisionPoint™ Transperineal Access System For Diagnosing Prostate Cancer In 2022, the American Cancer Society estimates over 250,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. But the good news is that prostate cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Summa Health is pleased to offer a new revolutionary technique for performing prostate biopsies. The PrecisionPoint™ Transperineal Access System eliminates the risks and complications associated with a traditional transrectal biopsy. A transrectal biopsy requires urologists to pass a needle through the rectum multiple times to access the prostate. This approach puts patients at risk of infection and potential complications such as rectal bleeding, temporary inability to urinate, pain and erectile dysfunction. Also, up to 30 percent of cancer is either not identified or misclassified with this approach.
Can access Alternatively, a PrecisionPoint hard-to-reach biopsy only requires two needle areas of the sticks in the perineum, offering prostate little or no discomfort to patients. The transperineal approach can also access hard-to-reach areas of the prostate during a biopsy. This procedure is offered exclusively at Summa Health Medina Surgery Center, 3780 Medina Rd, Suite 120, and is performed by board-certified urologist Joseph Dankoff, M.D.

Laparoscopic Radio Frequency Ablation of Fibroids Fibroids are compact, non-cancerous tumors made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue that attach themselves to the inside of the uterus. They can be the size of a pea, grapefruit or even larger. In the U.S., an estimated 26 million women between the ages of 15 and 50 have uterine fibroids.
Beneficial to preserving the uterus
Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation of fibroids (known as Acessa) is a procedure that uses heat to destroy fibroid tissue. A surgeon places a camera through two small surgical cuts: one in the belly button and one in the skin over the lower abdomen, looks inside the abdomen and inserts small instruments to destroy the fibroids with heat and energy. This surgery is beneficial as it preserves the uterus, offers a fast recovery time, and reduces symptoms of fibroids.

This surgery is a lifesaver, without question. – Richard Garcia, Weight Loss Surgery Patient
Weight Loss Surgery Can Help Save Lives Richard Garcia, age 53, knows what it feels like to be at a healthy weight again. After ballooning to an all-time high of 580 pounds, he couldn’t walk up steps or fit behind the wheel of a car.
“Everything was a chore. Walking, trying to take the trash out, just basic daily functions,” he says. “I had everything you could think of – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, water on the knees. My life was in danger.” In 2018, Richard met with obesity medicine specialist Kenneth Wells, M.D., and bariatric surgeon Adrian Dan, M.D., in the Summa Health Weight Management Institute to discuss his options. After going through the required patient education and pre-surgical steps, Richard had gastric sleeve surgery that reduced the size of his stomach. Four years later, he has lost a total of 358 pounds, and more importantly, kept it off. In addition to daily 3-mile walks and running the steps at the McKinley Monument in Canton, Richard also practices good nutrition and eats small portions. His body mass index (BMI) went from 60+ to 30 and his blood pressure is now within normal limits. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, there’s no question about it,” says Richard. “Surgery is not a magic pill. You must be willing to put in the work to get the results and maintain the results. It’s like building a house – it’s a great foundation, but the rest of it is up to you.” Richard says one piece of advice he would offer to others is to don’t wait 20 years like he did. “I was in my 50s when I did this. If you’re heavy, do it when you’re young,” he says. “This surgery is a lifesaver, without question. Dr. Dan and his colleagues at Summa are working miracles, and I’m one of them.”

The Proper Use of Antibiotics What is Asymptomatic Bacteriuria and Why Antibiotic Therapy Should Be Avoided What is Asymptomatic Bacteriuria? Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is defined as the presence of bacteria in the urine with the absence of identified urinary symptoms. Older women and men (due to physiologic changes that occur with aging), as well as persons with chronic bladder catheters (due to bacteria adhering to the catheter lining), have shown to have a high prevalence of ASB. Why It’s Important to Differentiate ASB from UTI “It is important for your provider to differentiate ASB from a clinical urinary tract infection (UTI) since ASB rarely is an indication for antibiotic therapy,” says Thomas File, M.D., Chair, Summa Health Infectious Diseases. “In fact, antibiotics are often more harmful than helpful when used for ASB.” UTIs, on the other hand, are associated with urinary symptoms, such as painful urination, and should be appropriately treated with antibiotics. A common misperception is that vague symptoms such as confusion, cloudy or malodorous urine, or fall in older individuals can be attributed to a UTI when there is a positive urine culture and the patient is without urinary symptoms. Studies overwhelmingly show
that treatment with antibiotics is not warranted in such cases may cause harm. Danger of Unnecessary Antibiotics According to Paula Politis, PharmD, Summa Health Clinical Lead Pharmacist – Antimicrobial Stewardship, when antibiotics are unnecessarily used to treat ASB and other conditions, they can be dangerous. Unnecessary antibiotics can: • Lead to antibiotic resistance, so when antibiotics are needed for serious infections they may not be effective • Are associated with undesirable side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash • Disrupt (or alter) the normal bacteria in the gut which is important for good health • Can actually lead to worsening urinary symptoms as the ‘asymptomatic’ bacteria are often replaced with bacteria that can cause serious infection There are a few instances where treating ASB is appropriate, including in pregnancy and for those undergoing invasive urologic surgical procedures. Talk to your primary care provider to learn more.
