SUMMER AT GDS MIDWEEK CHECK-IN
MS Wildlife Ambassadors
This week the Middle School Wildlife Ambassadors have been learning about how to keep our environment clean and how to advocate for more sustainable living. Monday and Tuesday, the campers created advocacy posters to hang up around the school. The posters required some research and creativity, but the campers came up with some great ideas! After picking up trash around GDS, some students made a poster named "Big Bertha". This poster had all the trash that was collected and it was used as a demonstration to show how much people litter and to encourage people to pick up their trash to help keep wildlife safe. Wednesday the campers went on a field trip to the Zoo. They learned about threatened and endangered species and how they can take action to help protect endangered wildlife. Today, the students will be doing a private tour to the Natural History Museum.

Video Game Coding
In Video Game Coding this week, campers had a balance of learning to code, outside play, and unplugged video game activities. When campers aren't outside, they are learning the basics of how to use the MIT Scratch Coding platform to make fun and simple games to practice their skills. The kids have made maze games, keep-away games, and animations that taught their friends all about them! In the coming days, the campers will be doing a fair amount of hands-on activities like making instruments and controllers that connect to the computers for them to play with in real life. If you would like to come in early on Friday 7/26/19 to play some of the class games and see what the campers have been doing all week, you can arrive by 3:00 pm and be directed to the classroom. We look forward to seeing those who can make it!

Creative Challenges: Session 5 Food
This week in Creative Challenges, the topic was food. On Monday, the class started off learning about food groups. They continued the day making lemonade, painting aprons and creating chefs hats! The campers spent Tuesday learning about a balanced menu. In groups, they used play-dough to create food items and paired them together to make a balanced meal. Tuesday afternoon, the class used skittles and jello mix to create rainbow jello cups! At the end of the day, the students wrote in their journals about what they were learning and the fun things they did during the day! Wednesday the campers played with eggs and vinegar, made popsicles, and did a science experiment creating carriers for eggs that would protect them from cracking if dropped.
