INITIAL THOUGHTS AND IDEAS.. The New Masculinity Following from Ba2a I have been looking back into my browsology and one of the trends that I had read on WGSN was to do with the evolution of masculinity, how it is now evolving and changing. It spoke of men taking on what would be percived as female traits, like being more emotional and nurturing. although im not sure whether this is a subect that has been over explored and is a dead subject for a dissertation such as feminism.

C T U R E OF DISSERTATIONS KAT EASTHOPE

Kat asked if any of us had any idea of what we were thinking of doing and i brought up my idea that i was thinking about writing something on the evolution of masculinity. she gave me some really good feedback sayng that i could take it way back thinking about animals and how we usually look to true animal instinct to a basis of natural behaviour. This opens up the conversation where males are often the most beautiful, calling it “ The longest trend cycle “ because if men are now taking on a what was considered a “female” trait which was being beautiful then really they are just returning to a natural behaviour. If that makes sense. this started off a whole train of thoughts in my head one being peacocks and how males are the ones with the biggest and most beautiful feathers.

I believe that to go forward first you must go back, I think a few people believe in that therefore in order to establish why the natural hair trend has revived again I have to go back to the beginning before its oppression. In african tribes before they were destrupted, black hair and black hairstyles as celebrated, various natural hairstyles to symbolise status, job role, tribe ect. In its essence it was a symbolic element even then.

When Africans were captured by Americans and taken to America to be enslaved, the general concession was that Americans wanted to emancepate Africans and strip them of their identity. Hair being the symbol it was oppressing it seemed to be the general way used to to strip them of their “blackness”. Shaving the hair of the men and ordering the women to cover their hair or straighten it using heat combs

The civil rights era or American civil rights movement are terms that encompasse the groups that were fighting to end racial segrigation and discrimination. They fought and evenutally won to overturn various disciminatory legislations ones that allowed companies to hire and fire basied on race, gender, religion ect. The afro was a huge symbol for that movement, the most well known activists such as Angela Davis and Nina simone both wore their natural hair and now even today it carries this symbolism of history and activism.

Throughout the film she features different hairstyles, all of which have been dysected in various Fashion publications. To have these hairstyles on such a public figure i think is what it will take to change the stigmas that are attatched to certain hairstyles.

Beyonce is one of the most obvious examples and one that received the most coverage, when it comes to black artists talking about black culture and black equality. Her most recent tour Formation with her newly released album Lemonade, was centred around black culture, The visual album featured a film, the film featured various black models and celebrities such as Zendaya and Serena Williams.

The trend has been completely accepted by social media also, since the trend began to appear various accounts dedicated to the care, maintenance and acceptance of natural hair. These blogs made to encourage women to grow their natural hair by offering assistance that originally girls would get from their mothers and grandmothers.

WHY?

A C T I O N S

The reason I want to interview hair salons that specialise in blacki hair is that I think they can offer perspective and why they think people are growing their natural hair and if they have seen a noticable increase in people deciding to wear their natural hair. Then I want to go the information straight from the horses mouth; interviewing young women and getting their views those with and without natural hair.

Style Five – Editorial, double report, the article and the research: writing an article for a specific magazine, newspaper or journal, Rational for your style and topic.

Style one – Researching a theoretical or historical topic addresses an aspect of visual culture. Political, feminism, - academic style, gender and design,

Now that I have chosen my research topic I need to decide in what style im going to write it in. Out all the styles we were given style five seems like one that I would prefer and would do better to express my topic for me. Also it would help me with my creative practice as I would be able to futher develop on analysing trends; I could also create imagery to go along with my report.

Style one is my least prefered but one I could also do because I am familiar with this style of writing. It wouldnt be hard to familiarise myself with the style although it isnt one that i particularly enjoy.

From my understanding and the way I interpret social realism is by stripping it back to its most basic definition. Which for me was critisising of social structures. Through discussing what that means I put forward the idea of the womans march and how we could create that into a social realism piece.

I went away and started to create some mood boards, trying to create a type of mood and feel for what the shoot would be like and to take back to the group and just put some visuals to the idea.

With the electon of trump breaking womens hearts around not just the USA but the world, Women made the consious effort to stand together in protest. Trump shed a light on the current state of inequality women are still facing. The march although did not only feature those fighting for womens rights but basic human righsts, standing up for minority groups and healthcare.

another source of inspiration I came across which gave me more ideas for our project, is this conceptual artist Gillian Wearing the art piece ‘Signs that say what you want them to say not signs that say what other people want you to say’ 1993-1993. This piece incuded the artist going around and asking people to write down their thoughts on a piece of peper and it turned out to be a very strong piece.

LIGHTING A N D ANGLES

SPOKEN W O R D

When we began to think about sound, i brought forward the idea that it would be good if we used spoken word. I had recently watched a speech named ‘nasty woman’, it was read by Ashley Judd t the womans march Washington. I later realised it was not her poem but a younger womans who i found on youtube. realising the copyright issues, we decided it would be better to have someone write a poem for us that we could use.

For the shoot we decided that although our message is a rough one. we wanted to keep the lighting and the feel of the foot quite feminine and soft.

STYLING GRUNGE IMAGE: CHARCOALALLEY.COM

IMAGE: WHATSHESAID.BLOG.BLOGSPOT

The reason I felt that a grunge worked with our concept is because the trend has a rebelious reputation and look, which was exactly the message that we wanted for our shoot. A leather, jacket ripped jeans and a baggy crop top or T-shirt with chunky black boots is the outfit that i am going to dress the model in.

For our film we all decided that we wanted to convey more emotion than story, we wanted the poem and the visuals to coincide. we shot various close ups of her face and clothes and of the signs she was holding, we wanted to communicate this woman who is tough and unbothered but angry. We shot her ripping up the sign and walking away from the camera, I think we communicated the emotions well and you could clearly understand the message. We wanted to contrast the dark feelings and Grrunge clothing with soft lighting and pastel coloured surroundings to show that although she is a women essentially in a war she is still feminine and a woman.

I for the most part put the instagram together, I added images from our intitial moodboard and some of my inspiration for styling and the look for the model, other memebers included shots that they had taken from our shoot. I then had the photographers send me there images, both of there work was good but gave different effects as one was shot on flm and one on a regular camera. We decided to go with the film images because they tailored more to the look we were going for.

I came across Dandyism when reading a WGSN article about afrobrazilians, I loved what is considered the more outspoken side of dandy fashion inspiring. Going against the traditional man in a suit for something colourful, textural and interesting. This picture to the left is at the core of my inspiratin on colour, pastel suits.

I wanted a mix of traditional and modern, what can be more traditional than the British and tea?, I wanted to intertwine this with current fashion, being coloured suits and male models represented current youthful trend; Location I wanted to have a vintage british look.

L O C A T I O N H U N T

ITS NOT WHAT YA KNOW ITS WHO YA KNOW For my shoot to comliment the style i want for a very birtish vintage look I emailed biddies tea room to request that i use there location for the shoot. I first went into the shop to ask in person and I was given the email to get in touch with the owner. Unfortunately she did not get back to me, I visted the shop two more times and emailed once more. I then decided to look else where for a location. With only a few days until my shoot I thought the best way to secure a location was at my place of work, Which has this more rustic but still traditional look. With only the acception of not being able to shoot anything with the company logo, I was able to use the whole top floor.

Bills was a perfect location because it has this more rustic but still traditional look. Starting with just looking at images of different pop up shops, one I thought of instantly was the Alexander Wang pop up store. After looking at a few different approaches you can take to advertising a product through a pop up, we decided something that would go outside and would be a kind of installation, or truck.

“British Girls is a covetable, softbound magazine celebrating the individualism, beauty, energy and attitude of young British models - BRITISHGIRLS.COM

British Girls magazine is a very new, publication with only two issues. We wanted something small that we could have alot of freedom with. something that also is england based that we could take to a different location. The magazine is focused around the personalities of models.

POP UP SHOP A member of our group brought up this artist, Do Ho Suh is a korean sulturptor and installation artist. He creates entire houses made out of fabric. the idea we came up with was that because the magazine is about the women, that we would have this house installation, that would look like a traditional british house and each room would be conncected to a model. It would represent something she loved about england.

After presenting our idea to Alex she told us it had a few too many elements. we decided to strip back on the material installation and focus more on the rooms. A member of our group suggested this architecture. It would help with the flow of the exhibition, starting at the beginning a small label by the side of everydorway with the name of the room and a small discription will guide people from one room to another.
