EDITOR’S Letter

TRUE BEAUTY We’re not your average magazine, and we don’t want to be. We’re here to inspire, nurture and grow the fashion bridge within Houston (just to start). Who are we? What are we about? What’s our mission, vision and purpose? We get those questions a lot. What does True Beauty 28 stand for? It’s not complex to believe that such a magazine exists within Houston, during a time where fashion and retail work hand in hand. The evolution of this industry has taken storm since day one with designers such as Valentino, Chanel, Dior and Paul Poiret (just to name a few) and the evolution of store set-up from brick-and-mortar to online. In fashion there is an understanding of art and design that coincides with style. We find beauty within different avenues within our lives that inspire us to create, design and articulate our image of what we see and feel. At True Beauty 28 we do just that, we find beauty within every company and organization we come across. Not one is alike, their all different in some shape or form and they are operated by trendsetters and dreamers of this nation. Not only that, their right here in Houston. Were inspired to share that, we open our journey of meeting such talented and beautiful people who inspire their communities, city and country. We visualize Houston becoming a fashion stepping stone for designers, stylists’, small business owners and entrepreneurs alike. Our mission is to put Houston on the map as a fashion capital. By not only opening its doors to small business owners and entrepreneurs alike, we also give back to our community. Where 50% of our proceeds are given to non-profit organizations, charities and scholarships for small businesses, entrepreneurs and college students. Through this 1st issue we plan to give you just a taste of what is to come from True Beauty 28 and what our commitment is to our readers around the world. We hope to express the love we have for the fashion community and the small businesses that enter the realm. We hope to educate, awe and be an inspiration to those who dare to dream of something bigger than themselves. We plan to connect our readers to what they want to know, see and envision. We hope that you enjoy True Beauties! And remember to stay beautiful. Summer R. Rudolph - Editor – In – Chief

DESIGNERS/FASHION

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: CHASITY SEREAL AND DAUGHTER KIRSTYN

CHASITY SEREAL: Celebrity Designer, Mother and Entrepreneur on the Rise By Summer R. Rudolph

No designer is the same and nonetheless, Chasity Sereal isn’t your ordinary designer. Born Houstonian, who marked her beauty and grace through modeling went all raw on designing. Giving a new look, her look to the fashion industry while juggling a career and motherhood. Knocking down doors to every opportunity that awaits and comes her way and making an awe and pure artistic statement. Her whimsical designs are sure to inspire and motivate up and coming designers alike within the great city of Houston. Of what to expect and what it takes to make a splash within the fashion realm. We were honored to interview such a mature and young entrepreneur, who has had a journey within this great industry we salivate and dream about. Who is “flooring bystanders with her one-of-a-kind creations making her one of the most sought out designers in the industry.” So, keep a look out for her designs!

23

Question: How is it juggling your career as a designer and a full-time mother? Answer: Very hectic, but I’m blessed with loved ones that don’t mind watching her while I’m doing business. I always remind myself that I’m doing this for her. She was my inspiration behind creating clothes from the first time I heard her heartbeat. I recently bought her a sewing machine, and she sticks to that machine like glue. Hey, what can I say – we love our sewing machines! Question: How long have you been sewing and what made you pick up the habit? Answer: I’ve been sewing for about 3 years now. I’ve always wanted my own clothing line but never would’ve thought I would be the one behind the machine. My mom bought me my first sewing machine for Christmas in 2010, proceeding that I created my first dress, and the rest was history! Question: What inspires Chasity Sereal? Answer: Powerful women; Majority of the time my collections are based off the fantasies that are in my head - the superhero within. Question: Who is the woman that wears Sereal and why? Answer: The woman who wears Sereal is fearless, confident, and beautiful inside as well as out. She makes a statement without saying a word. She’s the woman you want to get to know. Question: Do you plan to open your own boutique? If so, where would it be located and why? Answer: Yes, I do. I would love to have a boutique located on Montrose or Westheimer because it’s in the heart of Houston – where all the shops are, and the shoppers visit! Question: Where would you like to see your business in the next few years? Answer: I would love to be a participating designer in New York Fashion Week, and make custom pieces for performers such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. Question: Who was the 1st to wear your designs and how did that make you feel? Answer: Latoya J from MTV’S show “The Real World St. Thomas”. I was elated! I can’t even describe the feeling I got when I saw her on the red carpet! Question: What would you say your style is like?

Answer: Avant Garde Question: What colors, prints and trends do you believe will take over the industry within the next few years? Answer: I feel that cheetah print will forever remain as well as vintage! Question: What would you say to encourage or motivate aspiring designers? Answer: Be patient! Having patience is a MUST, especially for self-taught designers. Learning on your own can be frustrating and confusing, but if you have the passion for it, don’t give up!

THE DYNAMIC TRIO: Dynasty XXIILIX, Dinero’s Closet, and IVEver Stay Loyal By Summer R. Rudolph

Changing the world with one brand at a time a group of entrepreneurs, who do it well. By giving themselves the opportunity to serve fashion all over the globe and give to many charities that they can when they combine forces. Houston is proud to have a group of entrepreneurs that are motivated not only by fashion but by their cause. We had the honor of interviewing all three brands for our True Beauties all over, hitting topics that you would like to know about entrepreneurs within the “cut-throat” fashion industry. An in-site of things to come and look for in Houston within the next year.

DYNASTY XXIILIX OWNER: MANUELA GÓMEZ VARGAS

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: YOUTH SOUL LOVE, MANUELA GÓMEZ VARGAS AND YOBI

Dynasty 2259 was established in 2012, with a mind-set of generosity and individualism. To inspire the world with music and art for those who want to wear whatever they image. The dynamic trio are encouraging youth and entrepreneurs all over the Houston area. With the goal in mind that fashion within Houston could be much more inspiring and individualized without the stereotypical H-town image. These rambunctious individuals make a statement wherever they go, pulling together with other aspiring designers to help build their brands and make them well aware of where they could go through their story. As I sat with the inspiring team and they discussed their dreams and aspirations of building an empire and “taking over the world. It such an inspiration that individuals with such unique style and collaborative talent live right here in our backyard. Question: What are your names and current roles in Dynasty XXIILIX? And what do you do within these roles? Answer: Manuela, Owner. Manage the business structure and financial status, while bringing the female flair and motivation to the team. Yobi, Graphic Designer. Logos and bring the collaborative creative process to life. Youth Soul Love, Visual Director. The okay guy (laughs), looks, events and sometimes stylist. I’m also an artist, but not the kind that draws. Question: Is it important to your brand to give back? And if so, who and why? Answer: Very important, in the memory of someone of generosity (Manuela’s father whom died of cancer). We give to the old, sick, poor and young. At our fashion shows we give 100% of our proceeds to a charity, in the upcoming show in June we will be giving to the American Cancer Society. We are also the creator of bomb packs that consist of food and other goodies! We will always continue that. Question: Who inspires Dynasty XXIILIX? Answer: Lives, the smallest to biggest things in life, the future and a little bit of everyone we meet and put it into our creativity. Our mentors and team members, life in its own entity is amazing. Our 1st year has been Surreal we have reached our wildest imagination. Question: Who are your customers and where are they from? Answer: Cali, Chicago, New York, Spain, Paris and Canada. Houston, people from all over that

Question: How long have you all been in business?

29

post and be like, “I’m rocking my Dynasty Tee.”

Answer: 1 year on June 22nd, started in YSL (Youth Soul Love) home and the rest is history. Officially, June 19th, but June 22nd seemed so much more dynamic because of my father’s birthday. Hence the 2259. Question: What would you like to say to those who want to enter the fashion and retail business? Answer: Manuela, “Be yourself, because everyone else is already taken. Have confidence people all over will try to tear you down.” Youth Soul Love, “Don’t just have business partners, have a team. Don’t just have a team, have friends. Don’t just have friends, have family.” Yobi, “Don’t chase the money, because money comes and goes. Stay true to yourself, the success will come.” Question: Where are you all from? Answer: Manuela, Columbia and came to Houston at the age of 11. Yobi and Youth Soul Love, Southeast Houston. Question: Who is Dynasty XXIILIX for? Answer: Imaginary consumers. We feel, if you want to wear your clothes with no sleeves, you have the right to chop it up and wear it...it’s you! Wear your imagination! Question: Where do you see your empire going in the next 5 years? Answer: Taking over the world! (Laughs) But, were tiptoeing on that surface. Build an empire that will last forever and gives confidence that lasts forever. To us, fear is only a state of mind, we want to empower others to feel unstoppable. Question: What does Dynasty XXIILIX mean? Answer: Kicking down doors of opportunities, and building a superior kingdom for the king and his people. To pass down a legacy and for each to carry it in their own way. Question: What does fashion mean to Dynasty XXIILIX? Answer: Self-expression. Clothes are clothes, someone that feels confident in what their wearing. Question: What is Dynasty XXIILIX mission? Answer: To bring a new generation of fashion and art. The city of Houston is in a depression of being stuck in a box. There is so much more to Houston and it could be Paris in here. And shed light, let our voice be heard.

DINERO’S CLOSET OWNER: SAMUEL THOMPSON Dinero's Closet was established in January of 2013 formally known as Purple Hollywood, Samuel "Samo Dinero" Thompson wanted to have a fresh new start in life starting with a new brand based in Houston, TX. Dinero's Closet represents a new world that sees fashion in another light as a boutique. Incorporating styles such as vintage and luxury street wear for men and women developing from an international perspective. The company’s mix of influences culminates with a "retro-future" flair inspired by iconic items of past generations to create the brand's unique characteristic. Dinero's Closet blends the essence of several styles to create balanced pieces that are always fun to wear and that suggest an aura of casual richness. Layered upon this are pop art graphics that have become the trademark of Dinero's Closet pieces, which will soon be attracting consumers around the world. We got the chance to do an exclusive photo shoot with Dinero’s Closet and fashion stylist D’wain Thomas II. Question: How did you and the others meet? Answer: Stetson and I went to college together at HCC and kept in contact and on March 16, 2013 we all meet up with each other at the Galleria and immediately clicked. Question: What does fashion mean to you? Answer: Self-expression, it’s not about trending it’s about what you stand for in fashion. Question: How long have you been in business? Answer: 4 years, it was formerly called Purple Hollywood then January 1st it was renamed to Dinero’s Closet. Question: Why Dinero’s Closet? Answer: Dinero’s Closet is my world, it’s what I see as hot or not. What I see in fashion that will connect to my audience from men to women even children. Question: Do you plan on opening a location of your own? Or with Dynasty XXIILIX, IVEver Stay Loyal and Liv Culture? And where would the location be?

35

37

39

Answer: Yes, with them. Hopefully by the end of this year or next year within the desired location of the Galleria or Montrose area. Question: What is your experience within the world of fashion and retail? And what have you learned from that experience? Answer: I have worked at places such as Suit Mart, Zumiez, Urban Outfitters, Aeropostale and Goodwill. I have learned marketing tools, having originality and a unique outlook on your brand. Most people come up with the same style or trend, you have to be your own brand and bring out yourself. Be your own brand and set your own trends. Question: What would you say to others inspiring to venture on their own? Answer: You have to give to people what they’re not being offered somewhere else. You have to have the passion, drive and persistence and that will take you where you would like to be. Be motivated. If you want to work as a burger flipper at McDonald’s be the best damn burger flipper you can be. If you want to work as a designer be the best damn designer you can be. Just don’t let someone tell you that you can’t.

SOCIAL MEDIA/ONLINE BOUTIQUES

RANDOM IDENTITY: Cherie Hopkins By Summer R. Rudolph

True Beauties, it was such an experience to meet such a laid back and hardworking woman within this industry. Who’s so giving and has more than enough on her plate. Such as playing the mother role, a full-time job and a full-time entrepreneur. Whoa, what a woman! It was just an honor to be able to sit and talk with someone who has been within this industry going on three years and making it work for her benefit. Truly hard work and dedication, with a brand that is unique in all ways possible and motivates anyone who buys an authentic piece of clothing from this online boutique and brand. With an image that sets the bar for online boutiques everywhere with a task of creativity and finesse. It’s more than just “random”, it’s the identity that you own and portray. Cherie Hopkins, does just that and more with her brand. And one day soon even more than just to sell items, to be able to give back in a major way and grow her company to new heights! This woman is truly unstoppable, True Beauties and make sure you check out her website at www.randomidentitystore.com.

Question: What is your background? Answer: I use to be a former contributing writer for a New York based magazine, I have worked in retail, I am a blogger with an interesting fan base and I have nearly 6 years of experience with my organization.

47

online boutique. Right now, I currently run my online boutique and work for a non-profit

Question: Why random identity and how did the name come about? Answer: A good friend of mine, was approached by her father whom owned a shop and asked her if she had a store what would she name it and what would the concept be. At the time she had no clue and decided to ask me. I was like man if I had a store it would have all of these different styles and it would just be a mix of things. If anything it would be something with “random” in it. So, it was proposed to write a business plan for the store and I was so elated. The day of the meeting her father, a business gentleman that was very conservative. So, he gave a lot of restrictions and I was just like if you take away all these things it wouldn’t be the store I had envisioned or even something different or fresh and new. It left me feeling discouraged! Then her 8 year old little sister, was like “are you going to have a store with my dad?” I said, “no, sweetie we have to many differences and he didn’t really like my ideas”. This is the kicker, then she said, “well why don’t you get a store of your own?” An 8 year old! Then she asked, “well what would you name it?” I told her I didn’t know at that point and time and whatever it would be it would be something with “random”, because of all the different things the store would showcase. Then she told me, “why not, identity?” I was like no at first but then it grew on me and it made sense. This is why in the logo “identity” is solid and structured, because you should know who you are. This is how Random Identity came about. Question: What made you want to start a brand? Answer: The inspiration that came from an opportunity, without that Random Identity wouldn’t have been born and the rambunctious 8 year old. Question: What is the trend or style of random identity? Answer: The heart and soul would be casual, retro vintage with an edgy flare. Question: What and who inspires you’re buying decisions? Answer: Me and my own personal style, not even my competitors. I believe in protecting your identity and having something that someone else doesn’t own. That’s why when bought I make sure it’s tapered to your body type and that majority of my pieces are one of a kind. Thrifting and making personal modifications to fit the Random Identity style. Question: Do you plan to open your own location?

Answer: I have thought about the ramifications of owning my own location, but more than likely one day but not at this present time. I am considering to have a section at a store and attend the Discovery Green Flea by Night events. So, look out for me there. Question: What is fashion to random identity? Answer: Fashion is doing you and it works for you. As well your personality and what’s good on you, your originality.

49

Question: What was the 1st item you sold and how did you feel when you sold it?

Answer: The turquoise vintage leather backslider pants for $30.00 and it was purchased by a Houston Fashion Blogger. As well as my second order was from another Houston Fashion Blogger, Consider Me Lovely, who in fact purchased my gypsy print culottes pants for $20.00. I felt like it was confirmation that you should never stop. Question: What would you say to inspire an entrepreneur that wants to be in your shoes? Answer: To set goals, but not super high expectations. To never stop, even when your at your lowest point don’t become envious of others success but stay motivated. Be ready for the one opportunity that opens the door to all other opportunities. And know that “# tags and likes are the word-of-mouth online”. Question: What makes your brand unique? Answer: Selling one of a kind pieces and art, as well as tailoring pieces to fit my consumers body type.

COMMUNITY

DIAMOND RIDERS SOCIAL CLUB By Summer R. Rudolph

It’s nothing more amazing, then seeing small businesses give back to their community. But, it’s nothing compared to those whom are non-profits and they give to the children of the community, especially the Houston community. Diamond Riders Social Club has only been in operation for a year (going on 2 in Jan. 2014), but they have already established a reputation of giving back and with an impact. Owner and entrepreneur, Candace George is a lover of many things and one main thing that stands out from her non-profit organization is riding horses. She dedicates her time to not only reaching out to her community, but teaching young adults and children who are interested within trail rides and horses. After a year of success, in May her and her club members were approached by Albert Thomas Middle School to conduct a trail ride for their 1st Rodeo Club. After hearing the proposition and being an alumni of Albert Thomas, she agreed to help the staff at Albert Thomas at making their 1st of many trail rides to come at Albert Thomas Middle School.

57

With such a huge turnout, of trail riders throughout the city of Houston, who came to support Albert Thomas Rodeo Club and the Diamond Riders mission for the children. These riders with hearts made of diamonds could have been anywhere and with any trail riding event that was happening that weekend, but they were there. Supporting students, education and giving to something that was much more rewarding and personable to them and their clubs. “We have to show the children within our community that we care, if we don’t then who else will”, says Candace. And that’s so true especially within the Southeast Houston area, where many children are exposed to so many things that take a hold of their character and lives. We have to instill a vision of success and motivate our youth to becoming entrepreneurs, business owners and active citizens within our communities. We care and we love them all!

59

It’s an inspiration to a growing community to see such dedication and let alone fun for something positive. True Beauty 28 hopes that they continue on their path to empower the youth and the community. As well we hope to join their team during the next event with Albert Thomas Middle School.

information contact them on Facebook!

They also have an upcoming annual event, January 17th, 2014 at Club Hole in the Wall for more

STYLIST/TRENDSETTER

ASHLEY DUNN: Houston’s Celebrity Stylist By Summer R. Rudolph

A woman with regal grace and an amazing smile as well as spirit. A true entrepreneur that has a success story in the making. With creativity and a sense of style that reflects the woman she embraces with her brand. Ashley Dunn, is not your ordinary dream “stylist”. She creates a wardrobe for her clients that are intended to be “timeless, effortless and classic”. That makes the simplest pieces within your wardrobe standout and speaks words of volumes when you walk into a room. With a motto of “less is more”, speaks more volumes than one could imagine. From closet makeovers to styling for movies and celebrities, Ashley Dunn is truly one of a million. And I am honored that I got a chance to ask some great things that we all want to know about a stylist within Houston, does and suggests. As well how her business came about and what made her say this it and here I am! It’s all for my True Beauties! Question: How long have you been a stylist? Answer: Since the age of 19/20, while I was at PVA&M. A professor gave an opportunity where we could assist with the movie “Stepping” (a BET classic movie), so I worked as a Wardrobe Assistant for the movie. It was an adrenaline rush, and I’m like how can I get this again. I have been working at this part-time ever since the opportunity arose. Over the years, I felt that I was being prepared for the moments that I have now within my life. Question: What do you love about your career? Answer: My client’s to say everyone loved my look, which for me says more than words can express and appreciate. Because I am my face, I’m my brand. To make people feel good and to take something that can’t be and make it real for someone that didn’t think that could become a new person. To bring them confidence and self-assurance, means more than enough to me. Question: What have you done before styling? Answer: I have worked in retail at stores such as American Eagle Outfitters, Steve Madden and Anthropology. I also worked in marketing and sales for 6 years, but I have always worked as a stylist by night. I believe that in the time of nothing, be busy in craft.

69

Question: Where would you like this to lead you? Answer: Global! To be known for your (my clients’) taste of style through image and within themselves. Because it’s not about me, it’s about something bigger than myself. It’s for my nieces and the women that look like me and want to go there, where I am today and will be tomorrow. It’s to give back! Question: Who are you styling for? Who would you like to style for? Answer: The Ashley Dunn girl, is a Carrie Washington. That reflects my style of effortless, classic and timeless pieces. Question: What does fashion mean to Ashley Dunn? Answer: Fashion is trends, reminds me of Madonna, statements. Style is timeless, everyone doesn’t have it, but wants it. It exudes a moment and trends. Question: Who’s designs inspires Ashley Dunn? Answer: Rachel Zoe& DVF. DVF because I love color and it makes people look and feel good about themselves. Rachel Zoe, stylist turned designer. Very inspiring, because I plan to do the same. But, she has timeless, transitional pieces. Such as the staples like black pants and button down tops and sequins. Question: Ashley Dunn’s style? Answer: Effortless, timeless, and transcending seasons. Simple and classic; t-shirt with jeans and a pair of heels with a red lipstick. Question: To someone that wants to style what would you tell them? Answer: To stay true to who you are. At this moment people can catch on to something authentic. Do as much as she/he can to learn the industry. Research and get familiar with the industry, get to know what it entails because it is hard work. Focus! To pray after you ask yourself if that’s what she/he wants to do. Then it will be the time to put yourself out there, for free! Build your brand, who are you, who’s the woman or man that represents you and your brand. Who is your client? Prepare on the business side of things. Lastly, get a mentor and they don’t have to be in the industry, in order to pour into you for tad bits.
