Stags offense a loaded weapon BY DAN BROWN
If nothing else in 2009, the Berkeley Stags will be a fun football team to watch. They will score a ton of points and then some … but the Stags’ drawback may be they could give up a ton as well. “We will have a strong offense this fall,” BHS head coach Jerry Brown said. Berkeley will be looking for a measure of payback this season. Coming off a 9-5 record in 2008, 2-2 in Region 7AAAA, BHS is hungry for 2009 and looks to exact their pound of flesh of revenge by dethroning Region 7AAAA champions Goose Creek this fall. “We should be very experienced on offense this year,” Brown said. This year Brown has all his components back. Senior fullback Dante Richardson shows no lingering effects from the broken foot suffered last October. Richardson
Dan Brown
The Berkeley Stags take the field on a Friday night in Moncks Corner. adds power to the Stags running game to compliment the cut and slash attack of Bruce Ellington and Pernell Irving. The trio of Richardson, Ellington and Irving accounted for 3,362 total all-purpose yards in 2008.
“We were in a transition year last year with few seniors and an inexperienced offense. We worked on a one-back system with Andre Ellington and had to transition to a multi-back offense,” the coach said. “With Ellington, Irving and
Richardson we have several options on offense to run.” Ellington rushed for 786 yards on 72 carries, a whopping 10.9-yard average with four touchdowns, and also amassed 1,754 all-purpose yards with 10 TDs, including
a 98-yard kickoff return. Throw 6’3”, 235-pound receiver R.J. Robinson into the backfield mix, plus sophomore Rakheem White, and the Stags will line up five running backs capable of exploding for the big play. Where the Stags will need to step it up is on defense with key spots on the line and in the secondary vacated by graduating seniors Kory Brown, Bobby Gadsden and Mike Willis. “We have some players ready to step into those spots,” Brown said. “Jaquel Yaden will move to the linebacker position and Evan McElvey is looking good at free safety.” Robinson pulls double duty lining up in the strong safety position. Senior Patrick Jackson will again handle kicking duties. Berkeley hits the road to open the regular season on August 28 against Dutch Fork.
As the 2009 football season “Kicks Off” for Berkeley County Schools Remember it’s important for athletes to set an example for your school and community. So...be safe, successful, but most importantly play the game with good sportsmanship!

Patriots have D, but need skill BY ROGER LEE
Three may be the magic number for the Patriots this season. Three as in: three starting defensive linemen returning, three starting linebackers returning and three starting defensive backs returning. The number doesn’t have the same significance for the Fort Dorchester offense, but that unit does return four starting lineman and its leading rusher. “We lost a lot of our skills players on offense so replacing them is our big challenge,” Patriot coach Steve LaPrad said. “We have a decent nucleus back on that side of the ball, but right now we are an average football team. We just have to wait and see how the new guys do.” The Patriots had some of the most talented athletes in the Lowcountry last season, but had to settle for a 7-5 season after many of their top players were injured and missed crucial games. One thing the Patriot offense did well last year was run the football and that shouldn’t change this season.
Returning to the offensive line are center Thomas Wood, Darius Rivers, Phillip Davis and Bradley Jefferson. Greg Koehler should also be a contributor in the trenches after spending limited time there last season. Among their top priorities will be opening holes for returning tailback Michael Sellers, who led the team in rushing last season with 871 yards and 12 touchdowns. Joining Sellers in the backfield this season will be Ja’san Bradley, who averaged 7.6 yards per carry last season in a back up role. Two sophomores are vying for the starting quarterback role vacated by Galen Bennett, who spent much of his senior year on the sidelines with injuries. Ethan Long took his fair share of snaps in the preseason, but Devron Glenn will most likely be the starter. When Bennett was injured, Glenn came in as a freshman and completed 18-of-41 passes. LaPrad is hoping the experience he gained will help him to a fast start this year.

PATRIOTS from page 8
“It wasn’t good when it was happening, but I think that will be a plus for this year’s team,” LaPrad said. “He probably won’t have those big old eyeballs that a lot of inexperienced quarterbacks get when they go in a game. Devron is a lot like Galen in that he is elusive. He can also really through the ball.” The Patriot receivers are young and the most unproven group on the whole team. Not a single receiver who caught more than two passes last season returns, but LaPrad has confidence in the group. Senior Aquino Spann, a transfer student from California, may quickly become the go to receiver while the younger players develop. The Patriot defense only lost two players from a unit that only allowed an average of 17 points per game. One of those starters was the team’s leading tackler, linebacker Adrian Stewart, but the team returns all four of the other players who finished in the Top 5 for tackles made. Bradley Jefferson, Antonio Guy and Montae Adams return up front. Last season Guy and Adams combined to make 176
FOOTBALL 2009 11
tackles, including 13 for a loss and four sacks. While Stewart’s presence will be missed, the Patriots have three solid linebackers in Geno Porter, Tracy Jones and Keshon Flores. Porter was the team’s second leading tackler in 2008 with 110 tackles including 7.5 for a loss and four sacks. Evan Thompson and Odell Funicelli will also likely see time at the linebacker position. The secondary will be anchored by returners Laurez Matthews, Tyler Walker and Justin Gaillard. Miguel Quinn will be the team’s free safety. He is a state qualifier in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprint events and the brother of University of North Carolina linebacker Robert Quinn. On special teams, Josh Hall returns after splitting the kick off and place kicking duties with Diego Lazaazo last season and splitting punting duties with Will Heath. Hall averaged 38.5 yards per punt. He was 4-for-4 on field goals and 36-of-39 on PATs. Matthews saw limited action as a punt returner last year and Malik Wheeler, now a senior, was used some as a kick off returner. The team has several athletes who have drawn interests from college programs. Sellers, Porter, Adams and Guy have probably drawn the most.

‘Time is now’ for Gators
FOOTBALL 2009 13
There’s no doubt expectations are as lofty as they’ve been in quite some time over on Redbank Road, home of the Goose Creek Gators. The overall talent pool was already as full as it has been under Chuck Reedy, and some transfers crammed in there during the offseason, bringing football excitement at Goose Creek to a fever pitch as the 2009 season dawns. But it isn’t all just going to come together for the Gators without accountability from top to bottom, Reedy said. The team motto is “the time is now.” “We have to coach harder than we have ever coached,” he said. “We have to be more demanding because the players are so talented. We have to demand more of them. “It’s very easy as a coach when you have a guy so talented that you let the little things slide because his athletic ability may overcome a step with the wrong foot or something like carrying the ball in the wrong arm, or whatever the case may be. We have to make sure they reach their potential.” Last season, the Gators captured the Region 7-AAAA title and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, finishing 9-4. The defensive unit returns eight starters. After two rough outings to start the season, the Gators were as nasty a group on that side of the ball as any in the state. They have a swagger about them this season. “You can tell they’re confident, not cocky,” defensive coordinator Chris Candor said. “They feel like we should win football games. That’s what you want.” Included in the senior-laden group returning on defense are the two leading tacklers, senior inside linebackers Malcolm Howard See GATORS Page 43

Knights eager to regain tradition
BY ROB GANTT
The Stratford Knights are out to prove last season was an aberration and not the beginning of a trend. They finished 3-9, their worst record since 1995 when they also won just three games, and simply just didn’t have it like former Stratford teams. “Sometimes getting humbled ain’t bad for you,” Stratford coach Ray Stackley said. “We’ve got a great tradition but you don’t win just because of that. You win because the players uphold the tradition. “Our players got extremely humbled and embarrassed by last year.” The last time Stratford took a tumble like this, the Knights did bounce right back up. After 1995, they went 9-3, 10-2, 112 and 15-0 in the years that followed.
Rob Gantt
Stratford home games are the place to be on Friday nights. SHS is looking to rebound from a below average season in 2008. Stackley said he’s seen more “We’ve had some kids call impressed us a lot,” Stackley desire and fire in his kids this some voluntary workouts said. “That’s evidence we’ve summer. amongst themselves and that’s got some kids that are hungry.”
BI01-145328
On offense, the Knights have a quarterback competition going on that figures to spill over into the regular season. It’s made senior Chris Hanna and junior Clint Queen better, Stackley said. “We’ve got two good quarterbacks,” he added. “We don’t like to play two, but it’s not out of the question … somebody’s got to start a ball game but if they both progress and play like they’re playing now, they’ll both play a lot.” Hanna, a lefty, threw 72 passes for 342 yards last season. During the preseason, both did a nice job moving the Knights into the red zone but that didn’t always translate into points, which was a concern for Stackley. “We’ve moved the ball real nice in between the 20s but you don’t score any points doing See KNIGHTS Page 17

that,” he said. At running back, sophomore Devin Washington and senior Ryan Eichelberger enter the season as the top backs. Washington is in the mold of former great Stratford running backs and figures to make an impact for some time. Up front, offensive linemen Trey Ardis and Russell Spaulding, a pair of seniors, are returning starters. Other players with experience coming back this season are Tyler Ford, Luke Bone, Cody Cuppy and Joey Swisher. Junior Adam Kirtley is the tight end. Senior Francis Lloyd and junior Preston Gavins are back as receivers. Lloyd made 45 catches for 589 yards and four touchdowns in 2008, while Gavins hauled in 28 passes for 307 yards and two scores. Ryan Barnwell, a junior, has moved from running back to slot receiver. Defensively, the Knights bring back leading tackler Ian Thompson at linebacker and free safety Brant Sally. Both are seniors. Thompson had over 90 tackles while Sally made 71 total stops and four interceptions. The defensive front is made up of juniors
FOOTBALL 2009 17
Brandon Cobb, Brett Borders, Tyler Limehouse and senior Cory Bright. It’s a group that has a mix of size and speed. Bright made 45 stops and 11 tackles for loss a year ago. Joining Thompson at linebacker is senior Nakeem Jenkins. He had 56 tackles in 2008. Seniors Malik Williams and Rodney Roberts, and Barnwell are also in the rotation at linebacker. Projected starter Jon Franklin broke his ankle in the preseason and is expected to miss at least half the season. Senior Marquis West, the strong safety, is back after making 55 tackles and picking off four passes. The corners will be senior Leon Alexander and either senior Tyrie Poinsette or junior Antonio Nelson. The biggest objective for the defensive unit will be to be more consistent. Last year, Stratford allowed 348 points. They gave up 21 or more points nine times, certainly different results than what they were used to. “Our coaches worked as hard as they’ve ever done but we just didn’t get it done,” Stackley said. “We feel like this group of kids is better … if you play good defense, you’ll beat the teams you’re supposed to beat.”

Wave out to defend region crown
SUMMERVILLE GREEN WAVE
BY ROGER LEE
With only seven true starters back, the Green Wave has a lot of holes to fill this season, but things still look promising for the team. “We feel like we have a good group with a lot of talent,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “They are working hard so I believe we will be a good team.” Last year, Summerville finished with a 9-3 record. The Wave went undefeated against Lowcountry opponents en route to claiming the Region 8-AAAA championship outright. Summerville then lost a first-round playoff game to Gaffney. This year the Wave offense only has one skillsposition player back on offense who was a starter last season. However, that player was the team’s leading rusher in 2008 and some other skills players have shown promise in passing camps and scrimmages. “We have a lot of speed and four good receivers who have some height,” McKissick said. “We also have two quarterbacks who are looking good to be just sophomores.” Tailback De’Angelo Henderson returns for his junior season after leading the Wave rushers with 749 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Henderson also
had six receptions for 131 yards. Senior Donta’ Lind will join him in the backfield as a fullback after seeing some playing time last season. Returning up front are center Devin Taylor and guard Corley Bridges, who are both seniors. Others likely to start on the offensive line are tackles Tyler Lotz and Devin Smith, both seniors, and guard Nick Schweitzer, a junior. Taylor has drawn interest from some Division 1 colleges. “We are about where we were this time last year with the offensive line,” McKissick said. “The prospects there are good, we just need guys to get after it a little more.” Dalton Saunders and Reggie Green are the front runners for the starting QB spot, but junior Matt McCombs, who held a backup role for the varsity in 2008, is also in the mix. Saunders had a solid season as the starter for the JV team last year and experienced success during passing camps this summer. McKissick said he also has confidence in Green, who transferred from North Carolina too late to participate in any passing camps. The Wave receivers had a good showing in camps as they helped the team earn a first-place finish at the Charleston Southern camp and a second-place finish at the Steve Spurrier camp. See WAVE Page 19

from page 18 Senior Marlon Pryor is the most experienced of the group. He saw a lot of action with the varsity last season and made 18 catches for 341 yards and two TDs. Others who showed potential during camps include senior DeJon Wilkinson and juniors Cody Reese and Chris Williams. Wilkinson is a state champion in the triple jump. On defense, Summerville returns D-1 prospect Brice Laughlin on the line. Laughlin, who was in on 31 tackles including two sacks last year, can be used either inside or at an end position. David Creel, a junior transfer student from Woodland, is another big body the Wave will have in the trenches. The linebacker corps will be led by senior Rondrick Tucker, a threeyear starter. With 57 tackles and 58 assists, he was the team’s third leading tackler last season. Michael Scholz should also provide leadership for the group. In a non-starting role last season, he tallied 28 tackles and as many assists.

Blaine Galloway (34 tackles and 18 assists) and Tyrone Williams (38 tackles and 16 assists) return as defensive backs. Williams broke up 13 passes in 2008 and made three interceptions while Galloway had three breakups, two fumble recoveries and an interception. All four starters returning to the defense have drawn the interest of college scouts. The Wave special teams only return one player who started in a skills position last season. After showing he could routinely boot the ball into the end zone, Scholz will again be the team’s kickoff man. The senior and junior Bryan Jordan are competing for the placekicking job. Senior Brett Clevland is looking to secure the punting position after serving in a back up role there last season. The Wave will find out exactly what kind of team it is early in the season as it faces Conway, Goose Creek and Irmo in the first three weeks. Conway and Irmo handed Summerville its only regular-season losses last year. The Gators are again loaded with talent.

Swamp Foxes expect less turmoil
BY ROGER LEE
Expect a sharper looking Swamp Fox team this fall. Last year, the Ashley Ridge football team entered its debut season without even having a chance to thoroughly evaluate its athletes, much less many opportunities to work on strategy. As expected, the season was a struggle for the team of freshmen and sophomores, which finished the year with a 2-9 record. Entering the team’s second season, Ashley Ridge coach Doc Davis says things don’t look quite so grim. “We certainly feel better about the team,” he said. “This time last year it was total chaos for everyone – the players, coaches and parents. No one knew what to expect. Our expectations for this year are just to play better. We have improved so I think we will be more competitive, but I
don’t know if that is going to translate into more wins or not.” Davis says he now has a much better idea of what his athletes are capable of. He plans to open the playbook up some, particularly in the passing game, but cautions that the program is still a work in progress and probably will be for several more seasons. One thing the Foxes have going for them is they only lost one starter on each side of the ball and from its special teams’ skills group. Amad Dawson, the team’s best lineman on both sides of the ball, and place kicker Sergio Rosas, did not return. However, the rest of the starters did. “We return our leading passer, leading receiver and leading rusher and that’s always a good thing,” Davis said. Quarterback Cameron Cox is back for his junior campaign See FOXES Page 31

Cane Bay’s progress from its first year as a program to this fall is easy to track just by visiting the school’s weight room. “We timed them last year when they were true eighth and ninthgraders, and we had three kids that could break a five flat,” Cane Bay coach Jeff Cruce said. “On our board in there now, we’ve got over 20 kids that can run a 4.9 or better. There is a huge difference speed-wise. “And we’ve got some kids benching 315 and a kid that’s squatting 505.” The Cobras, playing with only freshmen and sophomores, finished 2-8 a year ago and lost by some big numbers. They have the look of a more mature football team physically and Cruce expects his squad to hold its own this fall. “I think we’re going to shock some people when they see us this time around,” Cruce said. “You’ll never see another game at Cane Bay where a team hangs 60-plus or more points on us. That will never happen again, ever. It just won’t happen.” The Cobras are more equipped on the coaching staff too. They have five new football coaches in the program. No more double duty for the varsity coaches unless they just want to coach in both programs. “We’ve got a full staff now,” Cruce said. “We’ve got six on the JV and six on the varsity. Last year we had to coach both and it was too much.” See COBRAS Page 30

Hawks looking for more effort
BY ROB GANTT
The Hanahan Hawks have to put together more fourquarter efforts this season. They finished 6-5 a year ago and led at halftime in four of those losses. In the other, they were tied with eventual state champion Dillon at the break in the opening round of the Class AA playoffs. “We were a few plays away from our season being a lot better,” Hawks coach Charlie Patterson said. The Hawks open the 2009 season expecting to light up scoreboards but aren’t as settled on the other side of the ball. The offense was clearly ahead of the defense in the spring and the preseason. “We’ve got a lot of improvements to make but we feel like we’ve got the
group that can compete with anybody,” Patterson said. Both quarterbacks up for the starting job are capable of moving the chains, Patterson said. Senior Bryce Hines is back after throwing for nearly 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns and junior Derek Coblentz is right there as a co-No. 1 signal caller. Running backs Monti Richardson and Jamal Lockwood are returners, having combined for 999 yards in 2008. Richardson scored six touchdowns, four rushing and two receiving. Senior Jelani Ellington also got a lot of work in the backfield during the preseason along with senior Chris A. Brown. The receiver corps is plenty deep with playmakers. Junior Irim Aiken caught 27
balls for 456 yards and seven touchdowns and Paul Smith added 19 grabs for 289 yards and three scores. Junior Jaron Denmark had 124 yards receiving and a score last season. Sophomore Chris Brown, junior Shawn Fludd, sophomore Patrick Alston and junior Nick Smith will all get looks in the passing game too. Up front, the Hawks are just as experienced. Five players in the rotation have starting experience. The left tackle is senior Sidney Clark, senior left guard Leonard Finley, senior center Nick Pye, junior right guard Kyle Clark and junior right tackle Trey Farley. Juniors Ryan Blankenship and Troy Toppin will play in the line, too. Defensively, the Hawks are solid at the end positions
with Jelani Ellington and James King. Sophomore Ryan Hunt and a few others are rotating in at the other two positions. Junior linebacker Sabastian Short and Lockwood are back at the second level after making over 80 total tackles each last season. Lockwood has moved to the outside and John Piggott is the other outside linebacker. Senior Anthony Pelloni starts the season at the other inside spot by Short. Aiken is the anchor of the secondary at free safety and Fludd is locked in at one corner spot. Chris A. Brown is the first-teamer at the other corner spot. The Hawks have plenty of depth there too. The Hawks figure to be a top 10 team in the Class AA polls at some point this season but they start out the year
just outside by some preseason polls. Patterson is OK with his team’s starting point. “I think a lot of times, they look at things such as college prospects and seniors,” he said. “We may not have a lot of big name guys that big colleges are looking at but give me 30 guys that want to play together and you can have the superstars. “I think one of our big things will be team chemistry. If we can get our 35 or 40 guys to play as a team, we’re going to be all right.” This fall, the Hawks will be looking for their first region title since 2006 and first 10win season since going 12-2 in 2004. They compete in Region 7-AA with Waccamaw, Timberland, Manning, Kingstree and Andrews.
Showa Denko would like to wish Dorchester County Football Teams, Band Members & Cheerleaders a fun and successful season.

They were so close … and yet so far. After looking unstoppable for most of the 2008 season, the Timberland Wolves lost in heartbreaking fashion to end last year’s campaign. The Wolves (14-1 in 2008), who lost out to eventual state champion Dillon in double overtime in the Lower State finals, are in the midst of a complete overhaul of their offense. Gone are the likes of Quinton Washington, Aldrick Fordham, Storm Moore, Rockarius King, and Caleb Caddell, all bound for Division I college football
programs this fall. Stepping to the forefront is senior quarterback and Coastal Carolina committee Cody Craig who will get to air it out this time around. According to his dad and coach, Art Craig, he may have to. “Last year we were a running team, but this year we’re going to throw the ball more. This year we’re going to have to be a little more innovative with what we do.” Without the mountainous orange wall of the Wolves front line, Cody Craig, who was as much a part of last year’s running attack as King See WOLVES Page 46

COBRAS from page 25
At basically every position too there’s a lot more competition for starting spots. The Cobras are developing a more solid two-deep depth chart. On offense, Stratford transfer Zack Wimmer, a sophomore, is pushing 2008 starter Brandon Hall at quarterback and could emerge as the first-teamer. On the line, junior left guard Cody Nuchia and sophomore center Josh Hale are the anchors but the Cobras are working eight or nine kids there, including sophomore Devon Thornton, sophomore Blake Paez and sophomore Kyle Meree. “We’re just trying to find five that fit together,” Cruce said. In the backfield, juniors Fritz Simmons and James Bishop combined for nearly 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground last season. Anthony Enos is also expected to play in the backfield. Junior tight end Andrew Ackerman and junior receiver Jared Holloway are the top two receivers returning. Ackerman caught 12 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Holloway hauled in
eight passes for 169 yards, including a long touchdown catch in the school’s win against Ashley Ridge last season. Defensively, the Cobras’ strength is going to be its line. Juniors Cody Rose, Anthony Phyall, Devonte Diggs and Jonathan Graham and freshman Tyrell Davis will be able to cause some problems for opposing offenses. At linebacker, junior Cullen Seabrook returns to anchor the second level. He made over 100 tackles a year ago. Sophomore Keenen Reid and junior Darius Warren are the other starters. Sophomore Randal Drew, junior Kellin Kunkel and junior Andrew Crawford provide quality depth at linebacker. Members of the secondary include junior Kyle Spearman, junior Bruce Rumph, junior Henry Taylor, junior Tariq Simmons and sophomore Chris David. “Our numbers are very high,” Cruce said. “We’ve got 60 on varsity and 75 on JV. We’ve got the numbers to have a Bteam but we’re not ready for a B-team yet. The foundation is being built.”

sive trenches. “On defense, I think our strength is probably our linebackers,” Davis said. “Lorenzo Baker, our leading tackler last year, will lead a group of guys returning who have a knack for being at the right place at the right time.” Joining the sophomore in the linebacking corps will be returners Pete Cunningham and Lester and two newcomers to the varsity, Chris Lupyak and Jeff Judy. Lupyak and Judy will also be called on to play defensive backs in some schemes. Neals and Dominique Francis will both line up at safety. Nick Webb returns to one cornerback position and Doctor is the favorite to earn the other corner spot. Two sophomores are vying for the place kicker position. Brandon Hughes played for the Swamp Fox JV last season and Dalton Robinson is new to the program. McKinney will again be the Swamp Fox punter and Cox will again be the team’s punt returner. However, Davis says he doesn’t expect Cox to make many returns. “We plan to go after every punt,” Davis said. “Hopefully we’ll block a few and make them (shank) a lot of the others. The rest, Cameron can just fair catch unless there is a great return opportunity.” Neals and Doctor will return kick offs.

after passing for approximately 1,000 yards as a sophomore. His favorite target, wideout Seamus McKinney, also returns. Ashley Ridge coaches estimate that McKinney made 52 receptions last season, which puts the sophomore on track to finish high school with 200 receptions. Tight ends Lorenzo Baker and Tre Deloach also return. Otis Neals will again line up as tailback after leading the Swamp Foxes in rushing yards last season. Joining him in the backfield will be returning fullback Kevin Lester and freshman Romelo Doctor, who is coming off an impressive season with the Ashley Ridge JV. “We’re excited about having a strong tandem of tailbacks,” Davis said. “Otis plays both ways so having Romelo to kind of spell him will help. Maybe we won’t work Otis to death this year.” Paul Gonzales, Brandon Woodward, Alan Kendall and center Chris Massey return to the offensive line. Helping to fill the void left by Dawson’s departure will be Pinewood transfer M.J. Pinson. Most of the players filling big roles on offense, including all of the linemen, will also play on defense. Two new members of the Swamp Fox program, junior Shelby Smith and sophomore Jarred Joseph, will also spend time in the defen-

Cross hungry to improve T BY DAN BROWN
The Cross Trojans reached into their past in hopes of developing a more promising future with the hiring of alumnus Shawn Wright to guide the Trojan football program. As the season is poised to start, Wright is seeing a difference already. “The kids were pretty enthused,” Wright said. “Being around the new coaches has energized them a little and got them excited about the fall.” The Trojans under departing coach James Waring finished 4-7 overall and 4-2 in Region 6-A in 2008 and were ousted in the first round of the playoffs by Timmonsville. Wright’s initial goals for his Trojans can’t be measured by wins and losses. “I want to do well for this football program and bring the community back out here,” he said. When he looks at his team, the new coach sees promise. “We have some talent here,” he said. “These kids came ready to play football.” Wright’s first move was to take DeVante Jenkins out from under center and put the 6’5” senior in the X-receiver position and get him downfield. “With DeVante’s speed and height we need to get him downfield and get the ball in his hands,” Wright said. The responsibility of doing just that will fall on the young shoul-

With Jalen back there I can move DeVante out to the receiver slot.” Treston Haskill and Dondrick Pringle will also be targets for Frazier’s rocket arm. In the backfield, Antonio Smith, Stephon Simmon, Michael Smalls, and Louis Simmons will handle most of carries in the Trojans multiple Wing-T offense. On defense, the player to keep an eye on will be defensive end Corde Dailey. “He’s getting some looks from some people this year,” Wright said. “I expect big things from him.” Also anchoring the defense is linebacker Floyd Mack, a junior who has started every Trojan football game since his freshman year, and Trevor Doctor, who missed all of 2008 with a torn ACL. “Floyd has started every game he’s played here,” Wright said, “and with Trevor back, he’ll be a big addition to our team this year.” Jenkins and Frazier will line up in the defensive backfield when the opposition has the. Woodland aims to make strides
WOODLAND WOLVERINES
August 2009
B Y ROGER LEE
With many of its top players returning, Woodland is looking to build on the success it had last season. The Wolverines went 4-1 in their region last season to tie for first place. It was the best finish to date in the school’s history. After a loss in the playoffs, Woodland finished up 8-4 overall. The team lost some key players to graduation, most notably its leading receiver and leading tackler. However, the team returns seven true starters on each side of the ball plus its punter. “We are more experienced entering this season than we have been in the past,” Woodland coach Reed Charpia said. “That is a result of more athletes coming out for the team and our coaches playing more of them. However, I’m not saying we have more depth going into this year.” The Wolverines return four starters to the offensive line. Bo Wagers is the center; Chavez James and Labradford Rasberry are the guards; and Ricky Pringle returns at left tackle.
Charpia says a number of other linemen are likely to see time this year. “We aren’t as big on either side of the ball as we were last year, but we are quicker,” Charpia said. The line will be charged with opening holes for two college prospects in the offensive backfield. If it succeeds in that mission, the Wolverines will be hard to stop. Junior Robert Smith is back for his third season as the Wolverine quarterback. The 200809 All-County Line first-string QB completed 156 passes for 2,402 yards and 25 TDs last season while also rushing for 1,038 yards and 11 TDs. Also returning to the backfield is tailback Nagui Wright, who followed a great season in 2008 by placing sixth in the state 100-meter dash finals in the spring. The senior has good hands and at times may line up as a receiver. Kijuan Edwards is also expected to see some action in the backfield. After leading the Wolverines in receptions last year, Marquise Carson graduated. However, Woodland does return the receiver who lined up opposite of Carson, senior Harold Seabrook.
Martin Connelly had significant playing time as a receiver last season and will likely see action both as a receiver and backup QB this year. He will also once again be the team’s punter. Lashaun Stapleton, Otez Ross and Andrae Green are other players expected to get some reps either as a receiver or running back, if not as both. The Woodland defense lacks experience up front, but makes up for it at the other positions. Returning to the linebacking corps are Edwards, Carlton Summers and Cameron Smalls. Cornerbacks Devine Kelly and Wright return and Connelly will again line up at safety. Defensive end Damian Alston is the sole starter back on the defensive line. As the season progresses, a number of linemen may be called upon. Terrill Haynes, Alfred Spell, Ehron Mitchum, Chris Spell, Kadeem Elmore, Marcus Daniel, Dejaun Smith, Michael Elmore, Dylan Murray, Brandon Higgins, Daniel Mitchell, Ryan Rhodus and Jeremey Smith are among the players hoping to spend some time in the trenches either on offense or defense.

St. John’s Cavaliers football coach Bill McCall has a good feeling about the state of the school’s football program. According to the coach, it’s all about believing. “The biggest issue is getting the guys to believe they can play 11-man football,” McCall said. A year ago, his Cavaliers stepped up to the challenge of 11-man football, jumping out to a 3-1 mark to start the season and finishing with a more than respectable 6-5 record. This year it’s more of the same, trying to find the right player to fill the slots left vacant from graduation and building on the success of last year’s inaugural 11-man campaign. “There are things we learned from last year’s experience we’ll be able to apply to this year’s team,” McCall said. The first improvement over 2008 is simply in the number of bodies lining up on either side of the ball as the Cavaliers will field a 22-man varsity squad and a 15-man JV team this year. “The numbers and interest in the football program are improving school wide,” said athletic director Bob Winters. The biggest question facing McCall and his Cavaliers is where to put his players and what they’ll do once he puts them there. New for St. John’s this fall will be a multiple quarterback
set up with senior C.J. Downey and sophomore Tyler Dupree sharing snaps under center. “When one is not at quarterback he’ll be lining up in a running back’s slot,” McCall said. “Plus this year we have a first where our quarterbacks will both be lining up as outside linebackers on defense.” Whitt McLeod, Houston Cumbee and William Johnson will provide good-sized targets for Dupree and Downey, with Brock LeCroy and Chase Wright. Three returning starters will comprise the Cavalier offensive line in Brandon Sublett, Eric Parker and Abram Baucom. On defense the three will simply switch sides of the trenches. “With a school our size everybody plays both ways,” McCall said. Jason Roberts locks down the centerfield free safety position in a multiple formation defensive scheme with McLeod and Ryan Gatlin flanking at the cornerback positions. Crumbee, Dupree and Downey anchor the linebacker corps with sophomores Chris Rudd and Aaron Porter filling out the defensive line. St. John’s opens the 2009 season with its first two games on the road before opening up at home on Sept. 4, against Cathedral Academy. “Personally I think we do better playing on the road,” McCall said. “The players aren’t as distracted and they can focus on the game.”

Chargers senior-laden in title defense
NORTHWOOD CHARGERS
38 FOOTBALL 2009
BY ROB GANTT
Northwood Academy football coach Jerry Stoots said his team can expect to get everybody’s best shot this fall but he’s not sure the defending champion Chargers are the favorites in their title defense. “I don’t know that we’re going in as any kind of favorite for anything,” Stoots said. “There are a couple of teams in our region that will probably go in rated higher than us, maybe as many as three teams.” Those who know Stoots know that’s what he would say even if he thought the Chargers were the favorites. With Northwood, it’s always a wait-and-see situation, though history suggests they’ll be around at the end. The Chargers have played for two titles the last two seasons and were one step away from the championship game in their first season. This is their fourth year playing football and they’re loaded with seniors. “We’re looking forward to it,” Stoots said. “We’re getting kind of anxious.” Northwood brings back one of the most dynamic running backs in the Lowcountry in Uriah Singleton. The senior rushed for 2,239 yards and 34 touchdowns last fall and caught 21 passes for 216 yards and two scores. “He’s a huge part of our offense obviously,” Stoots said. “One of the things last year was that we had another good back, a complimentary back that did a lot of blocking and allowed Uriah some rest. We’re still looking for that other guy this year.” The Chargers do have a lot of guys that can catch it but the passing game has been off in the preseason, Stoots said. Some of the time junior Ty Powell is missing his targets. Other times, the line has been a problem. Simply, the Chargers just need time to get everything ironed out in the passing game. “We’re going to have to have some success in the passing game because we’re not
going to be able to run Uriah 45 times a game,” Stoots said. Senior Brock Richard is a returning starter on the line and will be joined up front by fellow seniors Josh King, Kevin Thomas, Zach Hollifield and David Barnette. Sophomore Joey Bisognani is in the rotation too. The group of receivers are seniors Nick Burn, Ryan Shipley, Derek Mills, Wesley Bouronich and Jamie Hall. Tight end Calan Davis is a senior too. Burn also made his impact felt on special teams and defense a year ago. He’s one of a number of Chargers that will play both ways. “He ran some kickoffs back and had a couple of key interceptions,” Stoots said. “He picked up a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown in the state championship game too.” He led the Charger defensive unit with five interceptions. Singleton has moved from safety to outside linebacker. He made three interceptions last fall. Richard, who has moved back to linebacker from the defensive line, had four sacks a year ago. Thomas is the other inside linebacker. Senior Josh Manigo is the outside linebacker opposite Singleton. Davis and King are the defensive tackles. Senior Christian Rothhaus and junior Connor Ex-Lubeskie are playing noseguard. Burn, Shipley and Jamal Manigo, also a senior, are entrenched in the secondary. Hall, Mills and senior Noah Burns have played at one corner spot. On special teams, junior Seth Graham is back at punter and kicker. He averaged 34 yards per punt and made 56 of 59 extra points in 2008. “The best I can say is that we’ll be competitive,” Stoots said. “If we can avoid injuries and develop some depth, hopefully we can be involved in the playoffs. How far we go from there is anybody’s guess.”

Panthers look to be a contender BY GAIL OSBORNE Special Writer
Third year coach Pinky Guerard is looking forward to another year with the Pinewood Panthers. The Panthers went 8-4 in 2008 and advanced to the SCISA semi-finals, where they lost to Hammond. The team has eight seniors this year and Guerard is again looking to go deep into the play-offs. “We have been working hard pre-season and if we can stay injury free and do the little things that it takes on and off the field, we feel we can be a contender,” Guerard said. “There is parity in AAA this year. There are seven teams that all have a shot at going far in the play-offs. There doesn’t appear, at this time, to be a dominant team so that should make the year a lot of fun on a weekly basis. Our home game against Hammond on Aug. 28 will give us an opportunity to gauge where we are.” Senior quarterback Bruce Haynes returns to the offensive helm after completing 95 passes for 1,671 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2008. He also rushed for 870 yards and 15 TDs. “Bruce is a great dual-threat QB who we will rely on heavily to lead us,” Guerard said. Also looking to lead the Panthers will be Senior Moses Richardson. ing attack and Richardson wasn’t the featured back so he had a limited amount of touches. However, he managed to make a solid contribution to the team, rushing for 646 yards and five touchdowns on just 86 touches (7.5 ypc). Senior Chris Morgan will also take a lot of the workload when Pinewood wants to run the ball. “Moses is a speed and cutback guy that will carry the load for us at running back and Chris Morgan does a little bit of everything, including providing good leadership, Guerard said. “All three (backs) are fine players that any team would love to have.” Up front, the Panthers look very athletic and strong. The offensive line will be manned by senior Billy Bryans at left guard, Daniel Zuvia at right tackle and new comer Jim Brown, who continues to impress during camp. Pinewood is still looking for a wide receiver to step up. The coaching staff continues to work with some younger athletes to see who that will be. “We are seeing if we can get a consistent receiver who can run after the catch,” Guerard said. Defensive coordinator Bo Reeves and his squad have spent the entire spring and summer learning some new schemes. “I like what they are doing and I think we will stop some folks,” Guerard said. “I think by midseason, if we stay healthy, the Gator standout Jawaun Foreman makes a diving tackle during 2008 action. defense will be the strength of our team.” Damian Simmons will be looked to for that’s what could really hurt this football leadership on the defensive side of the team.” ball. The bigger Shell is a junior and the older a senior, and they’ll play on the left side of the line. “We’re fortunate (to get the Shells) because we were going to be very young on the offensive line,” Reedy said. “We’ve got some good young players but most of them were a year away.” Senior center Dennis Large is the lone returning starter from last season. Sophomores Matt Steffensen and Seth Craven are the guard and tackle on the right side. Juniors Rais Kelly, Ed Pippin and Montais Anderson are also in the rotation on the offensive line. On special teams, senior Daniel Smith is back to handle kicking and punting.

Berkeley teams look to shine in ’09 BY DAN BROWN AND ROB GANTT
As opening kickoff of the 2009 high school football season draws near, every Lowcountry football team looks ahead to September and October with an unbridled spirit of optimism. Granted, by the third week of September the cold and brutal truth of reality will have long since shattered fantasies as teams approach Monday morning with 1-3 records, but for now, everybody’s tied for first. In 2008, Goose Creek captured its first outright Region 7-AAAA championship in the school’s history. Goose Creek will have its hands full defending its first-ever region crown and Berkeley lines up what could be its most potent offense in years. “It looks like our offense will be experienced this year,” said head coach Jerry Brown.
The Stags feature five running backs and a two-headed quarterback. The two-headed quarterback comes in the likes of Bruce Ellington and Pernell Irving. Add to that a healthy Dante’ Richardson, Berkeley’s leading rusher last season until he went down against Wando with a broken foot. Throw in sophomore Rakheem White and receiver R.J. Robinson and the Stags have as many options to score as fingers. Goose Creek defends its 2008 championship with what got them to the dance, a much-improved defense. The defensive unit returns eight starters. After two rough outings to start the season, the Gators were as nasty a group on that side of the ball as any in the state. They have a swagger about them this season. “We have to coach harder than we have ever coached,” said head coach Chuck Reedy. “We have to be
more demanding because the players are so talented.” Included in the senior-laden group returning on defense are the two leading tacklers, senior inside linebackers Malcolm Howard and Dontavia Reid. Howard had over 140 total tackles and Reid was over 130 stops. Stratford looks to be much improved, coming off a disappointing 3-9 season a year ago. “Some times getting humbled ain’t bad for you,” Stratford coach Ray Stackley said. A pair of quarterbacks looks to replace the departing Tyler McDonald in senior Chris Hanna and junior Clint Queen. “The competition will make them both play better,” Shackley said. Wando and James Island look to fare no better than .500 this fall and could play the role of spoiler for Berkeley County teams if any should fall prey to “schedule watching” as the season enters October.
While there aren’t any clear-cut favorites in Region 7-AAAA, there are no easy pushovers either. Timberland must regroup after advancing to the Lower State AA finals only to lose to eventual state champ Dillon. Look for the Wolves to air it out as the Class of 2010 looks to establish their own identity following the Class of 2008 who sent six players to D-1 football programs and won the most games in school history. “This class is eager to establish their own identity,” said coach Art Craig. “They’re looking to carry on the tradition here.” Hanahan should give Timberland a race for one of the 7-AA playoff berths, though both teams may be considered long shots for the region crown. The Hawks finished 6-5 a year ago and led at halftime in four of those losses. The other, they were tied with eventual state champion Dillon at
the break in the opening round of the Class AA playoffs. “We were a few plays away from our season being a lot better,” Hawks coach Charlie Patterson said. “We’ve got a lot of improvements to make but we feel like we’ve got the group that can compete with anybody.” Former THS assistant coach Steve Blanchard is starting over from square one as the new head coach at Andrews. The Yellow Jackets finished 1-9 in 2008 and have nowhere else to go but up. It will take a three-year rebuilding process at least, but look for Blanchard to improve his team’s chances a little each year. Manning, Waccamaw and Kingstree will battle it out for the middle slots in the region. Unlike the Wolves of last year, there is no clear-cut favorite to take home the crown. Cane Bay says never again as the See SHINE Page 47

Region 8-AAAA race should be tight BY ROGER LEE
Expect some battles between the Region 8-AAAA teams this fall. Last season there weren’t many blowouts during inter-region play. These teams have veteran coaches who have their programs moving in right direction so while the frontrunners for the region crown are the same, the other teams can’t be overlooked. “The last few years it has kind of been a three-dog race in our region, but you can’t count anyone out,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “I’m sure that Colleton County and West Ashley are going to be competitive this year. It should be a lot of fun for the fans, but it’s rough on us coaches.” Last year Summerville won the region crown outright with a perfect 4-0 mark in region action. Beaufort was the runner up with only one loss that came to the Green Wave. Trailing in the region standings
were Fort Dorchester (2-2), Colleton (1-3) and West Ashley (04). This season Colleton County, Fort Dorchester and West Ashley have the most starters returning. The Cougars and the Wildcats have more skills players back while Summerville and Beaufort are replacing skills players who were key during last year’s campaigns. Talent at the running back position runs deep in the region so look for most of these teams to go to the run first and the pass second. Also expect a lot of the contests to again be decided in the fourth quarter. Following, teams are listed in order of their predicted finish.
Summerville 2008: 9-3 Coach: John McKissick (58th year) Returning Starters: 7 Summerville has a lot of first-year starters, but it also has a lot of tal-
ent. Anchoring the offense this year will be junior tailback De’Angelo Henderson, the Wave’s leading rusher in 2008. He rushed for 749 yards and 11 touchdowns last year and made six receptions for 131 yards. He will be joined by a number of promising rushers this season. The Wave has two offensive linemen returning to the trenches, seniors Devin Taylor and Corley Bridges. Their supporting cast isn’t very experienced, but looks to be solid. Sophomore quarterback Dalton Saunders preformed well in summer camps and scrimmages but that is his only varsity experience entering the season. He has a young, group of receivers to throw to, but McKissick says he likes the size of the group and believes they will do well. Senior Marlon Pryor is the most seasoned of the bunch. The Wave defense will be
anchored by backs Blaine Galloway and Tyrone Williams, who combined for 72 tackles and 34 assists in 2008. Linebackers Rondrick Tucker and Michael Scholz also return with considerable experience. Tucker is a three-year starter who had 57 tackles and 58 assists last year. Brice Laughlin, a D-1 prospect, is the only lineman returning on defense. However, the senior will have several big bodies up front to help him. The Wave’s season rides on the team’s success moving the ball in the air. If it can do this, teams won’t be able to key in on Summerville’s talented rushers. Unproven players in the middle of the Wave defense will also have to step up in order for the team to repeat as region champs.
Fort Dorchester 2008: 7-5 Coach: Steve LaPrad (7th year)
Returning Starters: 14 The Patriots only return one skills player on offense, but it is the team’s leading rusher. LaPrad says the team’s season will probably go as the performance of Michael Sellers goes. Last year, Sellers rushed for 871 yards and 12 touchdowns. With four starters returning to the offensive line, he shouldn’t have trouble matching or topping that this season. Fort Dorchester is young at the quarterback and receiver positions, but that didn’t stop the team from moving the ball in the air this preseason. Sophomore Devron Glenn is likely to get the starting QB spot since he has an accurate arm and has proven to be an elusive runner. The heart of the team will be its defense, which has nine starters returning – three defensive linemen, three linebackers and three defensive backs. The most highly touted of that group are linebacker Geno See REGION8 Page 47

will rely on his strong left arm and quick feet to generate points on the scoreboard. “You don’t replace that kind of size,” Craig said. “You take what you have and you adjust. It’s our job as coaches to adapt to what we have.” Craig threw the ball 100 times in 2008 for more than 900 yards and 10 touchdowns. He could eclipse last year’s pass-attempt numbers by Game four and double his yardage and TD totals by season’s end. “His leadership will get us through a lot of stuff,” the elder Craig said. While losing his line and most of his running game, Craig has a stable of wide receivers in R.J. Jefferson, Lee Mayes, Brandon Giles, LaRon Milford, Brian Welch and Damien Williams for his quarterback to hook up with downfield. Center Jarius Williams returns to anchor the offensive line. Williams and Milford will line up
at defensive ends along with Welch on the line in the trenches. “We’ve got a couple younger kids coming up and we’re anxious to see how they play out.” On defense the Wolves were able to keep their secondary largely intact with Jefferson, Byron and Lee Mayes, Jiles filling out the cornerback and safety positions. Craig is coming off a strong spring and summer effort from his team who are ready to hit the gridiron and establish their own identity this fall. “We’ve had a really good spring and these guys are ready to emerge from the shadow of the class of 2009,” he said. “They want their own identity. We’re getting great effort from our kids. When you get great effort you have a chance.” Alex Krall will handle kicking duties for the Wolves this year replacing Will Bradham who graduated and will play baseball for Coker College. Timberland kicked off their season at Carolina Forest on Aug. 22.

Porter and linemen Antonio Guy and Montae Adams. Last season, Guy and Adams combined to make 176 tackles, including 13 for a loss and four sacks. Porter was the team’s second leading tackler in 2008 with 110 tackles including 7.5 for a loss and four sacks. The key to the Patriots’ season will be staying healthy and finishing strong. The team lost some close games last year as well as some standout athletes to injury. Like the Wave, the Patriots will need to demonstrate they can move the ball in the air so teams can’t key in on their running backs.
Beaufort 2008: 9-3 Coach: Mark Clifford (6th year) Returning Starters: 5 Beaufort opened practice this summer having to replace its leading passer, leading rusher, leading tackler and leading pass defender. However under Clifford’s reign, the Eagles have a good track record of replacing talented athletes. The Eagles love to run and that will be one of their strengths this season as the team returns four offensive linemen. Led by senior tackle Patrick Dennis, a contributor since his sophomore year, they will open holes for a powerful group of running backs. Junior Josh McPherson will likely be the featured back. He and Alex Simmons had a very productive preseason. The speedy Deneco Holmes will also see time in the backfield. The Eagles have a healthy battle for the starting QB position between senior Thomas Gruel and junior Beau Brown. The Eagle defense will be led by D-1 prospect Justin Parker. The 6-2, 212-pound linebacker had nearly 100 tackles last season. Fellow senior Brandon Frazier will also play at linebacker. Much of the team’s season will ride on how well its group of first-year starters in the secondary perform.

from page 44 Cobras start their second season of play. CHS, playing with only freshmen and sophomores, finished 2-8 a year ago and lost by some big numbers. They have the look of a more mature football team physically and Cruce expects his squad to hold its own this fall. Playing 6-AA in 2009 before a move to Class AAA, the Cobras are still a year away and then all bets are off. It’ll be payback time then. Both Cane Bay and Ashley Ridge will improve but won’t put much of a dent in the region outcome that will have Bishop England and
Colleton County 2008: 2-9 Coach: Leroy Riley (22nd year) Returning Starters: 15 Colleton’s starters are spread out all across the field on both sides of the ball. The team has experience and depth. The Cougars will likely rely on the pass more than the other teams as it returns its leading passer in Kevin Adams and four receivers. Taurean Stephens and Willie Grant have seen the most action, but Riley has confidence in all four receivers. Adams is also capable of breaking big runs. The team has three experienced offensive linemen. Eric Kirkland, who wasn’t a starter but did play some last year, will likely be the featured running back. The Cougar defense will be anchored by defensive ends Andre Collum and Johnny Jones. The duo has experience and speed. The team also returns a pair of linebackers, a defensive lineman and a defensive back. The Cougars simply need to concentrate on playing smart football. If they are able to stop the strong rushing attacks they will face, they may surprise some teams.
West Ashley 2008:3-8 Coach: Bobby Marion (3rd year) Returning Starters: 13 Marion says he feels good about his skills positions. However, the team only returns one lineman on each side of the ball. Leading the Wildcat offense will be K.J. Cohen, a three-year starter at quarterback who has passed for 2,000 yards and rushed for 1,200. His favorite targets will likely be wideout Preston Bibler and tight end Donovan Burns, both returning starters. The offense also returns its fullback, tailback and center. The Wildcat defense will be anchored by returning cornerbacks Mark Gillispie and Nick Bosley. The team also returns outside linebackers Mike Gillispie and Peter Choice as well as a defensive end, lineman and free safety. The key to the season for the Wildcats will be how well their young linemen develop. Woodland battling it out for the top playoff spots. Burke, which finished 3-2 in regional play a year ago, will also be a threat. Cross looks to bring excitement back to its football program with the addition of new coach Shaun Wright. The Trojans could find themselves in another tight Region 6-A race, as the St. John’s Islanders look to repeat as regional champs. Last year St. John’s finished with a 5-1 league record, besting Baptist Hill and Cross, which finished with a 4-2 conference record. Academic Magnet and Hardeeville, which combined for two wins a year ago, should again bring up the rear in the competitive region.
