St. Stephen Catfish Festival means fun for everyone BY DAN BROWN The Independent
hen the cold winter months give way to the spring, and the promise of summer hovers in the air, that can only mean one thing in upper Berkeley County: The annual St. Stephen Catfish Festival is on its way. The annual event, which is enjoyed by young and old alike, begins Friday afternoon April 1 at 4 p.m., and will continue through Sunday evening April 3 at 7 p.m. The festival will present all local fare, crafts and food for the public
to enjoy. While the annual undertaking may be made up of fun and games, the importance of the festival cannot be denied. “We know these are difficult times, but it’s important to remain upbeat,” said Catfish Festival coordinator Larry Broom. “It’s important for people to know that they can bring the whole family out here for a good time.” The three-day event is free and open to the public. Broom said all the standard Catfish Festival favorites will be present in the days ahead, including the annual Cake Walk, Sweet Pea See FESTIVAL Page 4

contest and Catfish Stew Cook-off Saturday afternoon. “There’s a lot of new food this year,” Broom said. “We’ll have your standard favorites but we’ve also added a good many new food vendors. Plus there will be a good many craft vendors coming this year as well.” The annual Catfish Festival Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 2. Cartoon artists will be on hand. The springtime air will be filled with music during the festival’s three-day run. “We have a wide variety of entertainment playing on the center stage,” Broom added. The centerpiece of the festival starts at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon with the judging of the Catfish Stew Cook-off followed by the Miss Catfish See FESTIVAL1 Page 9
