Create Change with SummerWorks SummerWorks artists respond to the urgent issues that we face locally and globally –  they loudly proclaim what’s wrong, ask the difficult questions and suggest alternative futures. The Festival is a crucial space for artists to start conversations and inspire action with the potential to create change far beyond an individual performance. Over the past 29 years, we’ve worked with thousands of emerging and established artists to take these creative risks and imagine the possibilities of performance in our evolving world. As an audience, you play a critical role too. Not only do you help continue these conversations, but your donations ensure this work happens in the first place. Only 10% of our budget is made up from ticket sales, which means we rely heavily on the generosity of people like you. Join us today to continue creating a space where this urgent, progressive new work can flourish.

Welcome Welcome to the 29th SummerWorks Performance Festival. Imagining this year’s Festival has involved many questions for me. Increasingly polarized views on equality, the climate crisis, land rights, immigration, gentrification, and freedom of speech circulate the news and social media. I find myself asking: Is this for real? SummerWorks artists respond to our current world, in many ways reflecting on how we got here, but also imagining alternative futures. I am excited by a feeling of urgency in this year’s work. The sense of disquiet that pervades society today permeates the program and is attacked from all sides –  drama, humour, technology, physical expression, satire and social experiment and intergenerational collaboration are just some of the ways SummerWorks 2019 artists are exploring and questioning the world. Many SummerWorks artists delve deeply and play with the concept of ‘public’: What is public space? How is it made and negotiated? What is the impact of making something public? What is the power of the public to make change? These works invite you to consider new possibilities for the public sphere, to rediscover, engage with, and celebrate the Festival neighbourhood in new ways.

And, as we approach the 30th anniversary of SummerWorks in 2020, our organization is also considering our impact. We are invested in reimagining not only the possibilities for performance, but for the future of our world. How can we reduce our ecological impact? What will the next generation inherit? What can the future be? SummerWorks continues to be a space for openness to question, for bold new ideas, for reimagining what’s possible together, and for making change. Right now, this room for inquiry, this openness, this space for public discourse feels more important than ever. We look forward to you joining us. With love,

Laura Nanni Artistic and Managing Director

What is our responsibility as creators and citizens? This year the SummerWorks offers you conversations, workshops, pitch sessions, and more, all focused around the concept of ‘making space’ as it relates to accessibility and sustainability practices, reconnecting with the land through an Indigenous lens, and site-specific creation.

About SummerWorks SummerWorks Performance Festival is a curated festival of theatre, dance, music, live art and interdisciplinary forms, widely recognized as one of the most important platforms for launching new work in Canada. We encourage risk, questions, and creative exploration while insisting on accessibility, integrity, and professionalism. SummerWorks is the place where dedicated, professional artists are free to explore new territory and take artistic risks. As an organization, SummerWorks presents two Festivals annually, Progress International Festival of performance and ideas, and SummerWorks Performance Festival. We are interested in continuously re-imagining and innovating the possibilities of performance – how it is created, presented and experienced. Through SummerWorks, artists and audiences converge to celebrate the creative possibilities in our city, our country, and beyond. It is an incredible community of people without whom we could not exist. In addition to the artistic programming, there is a variety of free events, post-show conversations, and parties. From private networking opportunities, to public community events, to the closing night awards ceremony where we celebrate the best of the Fest, there are so many ways for you to be involved. The most important thing to know is that no matter who you are, SummerWorks is for you. Thank you for being here with us.

Accessibility SummerWorks Performance Festival is committed to continuing to improve accessibility for our audiences. If you have access needs or a question about accessibility at the Festival, contact Accessibility Coordinators Cara and Cléo at outreach@summerworks.ca or call our Festival Box Office at 416.732.4116. You can also find more information at summerworks.ca/access PHYSICAL ACCESS

All of our venues – including outdoor locations – have accessible entrances and washrooms. PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKERS

A person with a disability who is accompanied by a personal support person will be allowed to have that person accompany them to our venues. Admission fees will not be charged for personal support persons at SummerWorks venues. SERVICE ANIMALS

We welcome people with disabilities and their service animals. Service animals are allowed in the parts of our venues that are open to the public. WASHROOMS

All three main performance venues (The Theatre Centre, Toronto Media Arts Centre, and the Longboat Hall) have All-Gender washrooms available to the public. ASL INTERPRETATION

SummerWorks will be providing ASL interpretation for the performances and speeches at our opening and closing parties and some Exchange events. Companies within the Festival have been encouraged to offer interpretation at one of their performances. – Look for this symbol to see which shows offer ASL Interpretation and visit summerworks.ca/access for show times. RELAXED PERFORMANCES

Relaxed Performances are designed to welcome audience members who will benefit from a more relaxed sensory experience and casual environment.

There is a more relaxed approach to noise and movement within the performance space; house lights will remain on at a low level and some minor production changes may be made to reduce the intensity of light, sound and other startling effects. These shows are for anyone. People may choose to attend a relaxed performance because they like the more inclusive environment. More information on what to expect can be found on the SummerWorks website. Visual stories will be available beforehand. RP – Look for this symbol to see which

shows offer a Relaxed Performance option and visit summerworks.ca/access for show times. CAPTIONING

SummerWorks will be providing captioning for speeches at our opening and closing parties and some Exchange events. Artists have also been encouraged to offer captions at one of their performances. CC – Look for this symbol to see which events and shows offer captioning and visit summerworks.ca/access for show times.

MOBILE PERFORMANCES & LINE-UPS

Some of the performances this year require the audience to move short distances within a group. All performances will be accompanied by a Front of House assistant or volunteer who will be able to assist you if required. Chairs are available for moving performance and for line-up situations, so please make yourself known to a team member or volunteer if this would be helpful to you. FINANCIAL ACCESS

citySPECIAL at SummerWorks

In addition to our Pay it Forward campaign, SummerWorks has partnered with TAPA’s citySPECIAL program. Companies within the Festival have been encouraged to give back by assigning a certain number of tickets for this initiative, which will then be distributed, at no cost, to newcomers, at-risk youth, and marginalized communities.

Tickets and passes HOW THIS WORKS

PAY WHAT YOU DECIDE

With our low ticket prices and money-saving passes, there is no better place in Canada to gain such easy access to a high volume of curated projects than SummerWorks. If you’re new to the Festival, here’s a handy guide to enjoying the SummerWorks experience.

SummerWorks has always been committed to affordable ticket prices as a way of ensuring access and allowing our audiences to experience multiple shows during the Festival. However, an affordable price doesn’t always recognize the investment of time, talent, and resources that artists make in their work. That’s why we use a Pay What You Decide ticket option for every ticketed performance in the Festival.

1 Figure out what you want to see. SummerWorks houses a vast array of work. You can explore our programming in this Program Guide, and at summerworks.ca.

Get your tickets. You can buy single tickets or, if you’re seeing more than one show, we have 4-Ticket or 8-Ticket Passes. Single tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door, passes must be purchased in advance online or at our Festival Box Office until August 11. If you’ve booked your tickets in advance, you’ll receive an email confirmation. This is just your proof of purchase – you will need to exchange this for a ticket at the Venue Box Office to receive your ticket before the show. 2

Be on time! Be sure to arrive in time to exchange your booking confirmation for a ticket. In a tightly scheduled Festival, all shows must start on time, and many do not permit latecomers. 3

4 Get involved. Stick around for one of the many post-show chats or Long Table conversations, attend a party, or connect on social media with the hashtag #summerworksTO.

What does this mean? $15, $25 and $35 are available, so you can pick whichever suits your budget. All tickets are general admission, and there are no limits on any price level. Why would you do this? Because even at $35 you are getting more than your money’s worth and 70% of the ticket price goes directly to the artists. This is a way for people to increase their support for Festival artists while ensuring financial accessibility for those who need it. PAY IT FORWARD

SummerWorks believes that anyone who wants to attend the Festival can and should be able to. We’ve kept our ticket prices low for this very reason. Join us in our commitment to financial accessibility and help us pay it forward: when you buy a ticket for yourself, top up your purchase by buying a ticket for someone else to attend the Festival for free, and we’ll distribute these through our network. There’s no limit to how much we, as a community, can give. FREE EVENTS

There are also a number of shows and events that are either free or by donation. Look out for the FREE sticker throughout the program, and check out summerworks.ca for more details.

SummerWorks Exchange and Special Events The SummerWorks Exchange encapsulates our professional development and industry activities. In the SummerWorks Exchange, we have curated a series of events to facilitate artist and community growth, to strengthen the ecology of live performance in Canada, and expand our dialogue and collaboration with the international arts community. Including training and networking opportunities between artists and curators from Canada and beyond, the Exchange is the place where we come together to share and connect, confront the big questions facing our community today, and make plans for the future. The focus of this year’s Exchange is the concept of ‘making space’ as it relates to accessibility and sustainability practices, reconnecting with the land through an Indigenous lens, and site-specific creation. In addition to SummerWorks’ artistic programming, SummerWorks Special Events include a variety of late nights and parties to extend your experience of the Festival.

How do I collaborate with software developers? If you’re a performance maker or creative producer with questions like these, creative technologists Jacob Niedzwiecki and Luke Garwood are here for you, with hands-on demos and one-on-one/small-group consultations. Fundraiser For Our Future

Presented in partnership with Nicolas Billon & Why Not Theatre, in association with Environmental Defence Venue 1 Theatre Centre Franco Boni Theatre Saturday, August 10, 7:30 pm $75 2.5 hours In partnership with Environmental Defence, SummerWorks is hosting this fundraiser to ensure we can continue to be an integral part of amplifying the vital voices on which our future relies. Join us for an evening in support of both organizations, centered around a reading of Greenland and an extended Q&A session where we can interrogate the issues brought up in the piece, and plan our next steps.

Funds raised will go towards SummerWorks to support the next generation of artists, enabling us to provide more in-depth mentorship opportunities with SummerWorks alumnae, and even greater input from our teams. For Environmental Defence these funds will support the advocacy work they do with the public, organizations and the government. The funds raised will help Environmental Defence continue to invest in change that transforms the way we consume our precious resources and moves us towards a clean economy. In collaborating with Environmental Defence, we have a unique opportunity to give voice to issues that affect us all in a new way, and look towards empowering Canadians to take action in their own daily lives. Ticket holders are invited to join us for a pre-show reception, and a post-show Q&A with Nicolas Billon, Sarah Buchanan (Environmental Defence), and other guests. All tickets purchased will receive a charitable tax receipt for $40. 43

How do we know the “other” within? In this physically dynamic piece, two inextricably intertwined bodies navigate form and variation in their shared skin. Des-Echoes is an exploration of our relation to the parts that we hide, disassociate from, or ignore. Two bodies are torn apart, conjoined, dismembered, and gathered again in a dance of generative friction.
