As a festival that brings together performance nationally and internationally, we wish to acknowledge that SummerWorks takes place on the traditional territory, Tkaronto, “Where the Trees Meet the Water,” “The Gathering Place” of the Mississauga, Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat Nations. As we come together we pay our respects to all our relations who have gathered and will continue to gather in this place.

Art has the potential to change the way we see and experience the world. SummerWorks has always been a place where different people, ideas, forms and perspectives intersect. The Festival is a space where people can come together, be challenged, and take positive steps towards a better future. As a Festival committed to re-imagining and innovating performance, we are also redefining how a Festival can operate and what a Festival can be. We hope you’ll support us in creating an environment where exciting, progressive new work can continue to flourish. There are two simple ways to donate: 1. Online at summeworks.ca/donate 2. Before or after every SummerWorks performance with a Festival volunteer or staff member.
Welcome Welcome to the 28th SummerWorks Performance Festival. This is a year that calls for re-imagination. In response to the immediate pressures, fears, and challenges of our world, we need to be able to consider different perspectives, to find alternate possibilities, and to dream of what our collective future can be. The best way we can do this is to look to the creative minds and makers around us. This year’s SummerWorks brings together an incredible group of artists and partner organizations to offer you a snapshot of our country’s current cultural discourse and a glimpse at the new ideas on the horizon, in Canada and beyond. Works in the Festival explore the complexities of citizenship, racism, sexism, consent, mental health, and memory; they challenge how we perceive and engage with power as well as public and private space; and they imagine new possibilities for performance with inspiring experiments, interactive technologies, and jaw-dropping mash-ups of different artistic traditions. As a Festival, we are always encouraging artists to think in new ways, and this year we’re following suit – reframing SummerWorks in a way that responds to our changing ecology and the changing needs of artists. This year, we have curated three distinct streams – SummerWorks Presentations, the SummerWorks Lab, and the SummerWorks Exchange. While the names are new, they merely define what has been naturally evolving inside the Festival for many years. They represent the diverse ways in which artists connect with you to have conversations and grow collectively as a community. By naming them, we hope to provide you the best possible understanding of the many ways that you are an essential part of the creative process.
I encourage you to see the work in the Festival as an opportunity to engage – stick around for the post show Q&As and long table discussions, hang out at one of our venue cafes to talk with your fellow audience members, and join critical discussions at the SummerWorks Exchange. Take some time in the in-between moments to think and talk about what you’ve experienced, unpack what you assume, question what you know, and try to see things from a new perspective. Thank you for joining us. With love,
Laura Nanni Artistic and Managing Director
About SummerWorks SummerWorks is a curated Festival recognized nationally and internationally as a launching pad for new and experimental work. We are interested in continuously re-imagining and innovating the possibilities for performance – how it is created, presented, and experienced.
THE SUMMERWORKS COMMUNITY
This year’s 11-day Festival features 32 unique projects working in theatre, dance, music, live art, and hybrid forms as well as social events and a dedicated program for professional development and industry activities.
In addition to the artistic programming, there is a variety of free events, post-show conversations, and parties. From private networking opportunities, to public community events, to the closing night awards ceremony where we celebrate the best of the Fest, there are so many ways for you to be involved.
SummerWorks encourages risk, questions, and creative exploration while insisting on accessibility, integrity, and professionalism.
SummerWorks is more than a Festival – it is a place where artists and audiences converge to celebrate the creative possibilities in our city, our country, and beyond. It is an incredible community of people without whom the Festival could not exist.
The most important thing to know is that no matter who you are, SummerWorks is for you. Thank you for being here with us. THANK YOU

You can also find more information at summerworks.ca/access. PHYSICAL ACCESS
All of our venues – including off-site performances, workshops, and parties – have accessible entrances and washrooms. PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKERS
A person with a disability who is accompanied by a personal support person can have that person accompany them to our venues. Admission fees will not be charged for personal support persons at SummerWorks venues. SERVICE ANIMALS
We welcome people with disabilities and their service animals. Service animals are allowed in the parts of our venues that are open to the public. WASHROOMS
All of our Festival venues have accessible and All-Gender washrooms available to the public. RELAXED PERFORMANCES
Relaxed Performances are specifically designed to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including people with an Autism Spectrum Condition or sensory and communication disorders. These performances will have a relaxed attitude to noise and movement.
ASL INTERPRETATION
SummerWorks will be providing ASL interpretation for the performances and speeches at our opening and closing parties, and companies within the Festival have been encouraged to offer interpretation at one of their performances. – Look for this symbol to see which shows offer ASL Interpretation and visit summerworks.ca/access for show times. In partnership with Tangled Art + Disability, this year SummerWorks will be evaluating its ASL interpreted events. On-site personnel will be available to ask you questions related to your access needs and experience. We want to hear from you as you enjoy this years’ roll out of exciting performances and workshops. FINANCIAL ACCESS
Pay It Forward
SummerWorks believes that anyone who wants to attend the Festival can and should be able to. We’ve kept our ticket prices low for this very reason. Join us in our commitment to financial accessibility and help us pay it forward: when you buy a ticket for yourself, top up your purchase by buying a ticket for someone else to attend the Festival for free. There’s no limit to how much we, as a community, can give. citySPECIAL at SummerWorks
In addition to our Pay it Forward campaign, SummerWorks has partnered with TAPA’s citySPECIAL program. Companies within the Festival have been encouraged to give back by assigning a certain number of tickets for this initiative, which will then be distributed, at no cost, to newcomers, at-risk youth, and marginalized communities.
More information on what to expect at a Relaxed Performance can be found on the SummerWorks website. RP – Look for this Relaxed Performance symbol to see which shows offer a Relaxed Performance option and visit summerworks.ca/access for show times.

Tickets and passes HOW THIS WORKS
PAY WHAT YOU DECIDE
With our low ticket prices and money-saving passes, there is no better place in Canada to gain such easy access to a high volume of curated projects than SummerWorks. If you’re new to the Festival, here’s a handy guide to enjoying the SummerWorks experience.
SummerWorks has always been committed to affordable ticket prices as a way of ensuring access and allowing our audiences to experience multiple shows during the Festival. However, an affordable price doesn’t always recognize the investment of time, talent, and resources that artists make in their work. That’s why we use a Pay What You Decide ticket option for every ticketed performance in the Festival.
1 Figure out what you want to see. SummerWorks houses a vast array of work. You can explore our programming in this Program Guide or at summerworks.ca.
Get your tickets. You can buy single tickets or, if you’re seeing more than one show, we have 4-Ticket, 8-Ticket, and 12-Ticket Passes. Single tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Passes must be purchased in advance online or at our Festival Box Office. 2
3 Be on time! In a tightly scheduled Festival, all shows must start on time, and many do not permit latecomers. 4 Get involved. Stick around for one of the many post-show chats or Long Table conversations, attend a party, or connect on social media with the hashtag #summerworksTO.
6
What does this mean? In addition to our usual $15 ticket, $25 and $35 tickets are also available – you pick whichever suits your budget. All tickets are general admission, and there are no limits on any price level. Why would you do this? Because even at $35 you are getting more than your money’s worth and 70% of the ticket price goes directly to the artists. This is a way for people to increase their support for Festival artists while ensuring financial accessibility for those who need it. In addition to ticketed performances, there are also a number of shows and events that are either free or by donation.

SummerWorks Exchange and Parties The SummerWorks Exchange is a new initiative of the Festival, encapsulating our professional development and industry activities. In the SummerWorks Exchange, we have curated a series of events to facilitate artist and community growth, to strengthen the ecology of live performance in Canada, and expand our dialogue and collaboration with the international arts community. Including training and networking opportunities between artists and curators from Canada and beyond, the Exchange is the place where we come together to share and connect, confront the big questions facing our community today, and make plans for the future. The SummerWorks Exchange has been made possible by the generous support of the Toronto Arts Council’s Open Door Program, with additional support form the Ontario Arts Council’s Market Development Initiative. At our parties, we come together as a community to celebrate this year’s Festival and catch some incredible pop up performances from local artists.

From the playwright: “There are countless tales of the ones who cross over to some inexplicable place, slay the dragon and embark on their grand adventure but in every tale there comes a point that for some unknown reason the door closes and they can’t get back. For Farren, her adventure is simple. The most successful artist runs away to the forest and finds a gift, it is motherhood, it is hair full of flowers, collections of twigs and bones, mouse babies, moonlight and star hunts, anger and funny faces, flower fairies who just want to scream. All this through the eyes of the children that can only smile in one place.” Written by Liv Hussey; Directed by Aviva Armour Ostroff The listed performance time includes a 15 minute Q & A.
