“I find myself having to fight the tears because I never thought I’d be able to run a half marathon, marathon, or any race since I have had to overcome so many odds and obstacles associated with Down syndrome.”

A leader in the community and ray of hope to those who need it, Daniel Chaplin has had to overcome challenges his entire life. Chaplin looks to become the first ever person with Down Syndrome to complete 50 half marathons in 50 states. This year on October 15th, he will look to conquer his next challenge, continuing his quest at the Baltimore Marathon. In 2012, Chaplin had to run a 5k for a final project at Samford University and realized he had found a new passion. Slowly he began running more 5ks and continued to increase his distance each time. He then challenged himself to finish a half marathon. He liked it so much that afterward, he joined the 50 states half marathon club, and never looked back. Chaplin looks back on his accomplishments and the journey so far to finish this incredible obstacle. “My friends and family have supported me throughout this journey. All this training and running has changed me in a significant way. I find myself having to fight the tears because I never thought I’d be able to run a half marathon, marathon, or any race since I have had to overcome so many odds and obstacles associated with Down syndrome.” Throughout this endeavor, Chaplin looks to inspire those who believe they can’t do it, by showing them anything is possible if you try and work to achieve it. He has done so much to raise awareness and support for the down syndrome community. To him, finishing a half marathon is more than completing a personal goal, but inspiring those who need support. On October 15th, Daniel will toe the line at the Inner Harbor to complete his 40th Half Marathon at the Baltimore Running Festival. His journey to spread awareness of Down Syndrome and the inspiration he gives to everyone will be on full display this weekend.
