Q&A: Sid Busch

How did you start getting into running?

In 1981, I ruptured a disc in my back, the Navy was going to medically disqualify me from submarine duty, this was unacceptable to me. I made a deal with the medical review board that if I completed a marathon, I was fit to remain on subs. I ran the Hunter Army Airfield MARATHON in Savannah, GA in 3:45, and was allowed to stay on subs.

What year was your first Baltimore Running Festival?

I was at the first BRF, but due to a hamstring injury, I couldn’t complete the marathon.

Give us a little background on what you do when running in these events.

I dedicate all my marathons and Half Marathons to Fallen Heroes, young military who have made the ultimate sacrifice, I also honor police who were killed protecting us. I carry a 3 by 5 American Flag, and during the event I tell other runners about these heroes.

What inspired you to run for those who have served our country and lost their lives?

I got tired of the media reporting about actors from Hollywood and nothing being mentioned about these young men and women who gave up their lives and I tried to think of a way to honor them and inform others about what they did. Running marathons gave me the way to do this.

What is your favorite memory of the Baltimore Running Festival?

Hands down, my 200th MARATHON. I was given an experience I will remember till I pass on. From the volunteer relay teams who stayed with me, to the Baltimore Police who provided me with a motorcycle escort to the finish to meeting the family of the young man I was HONORING,I still get emotional thinking about it.

Why end your Half Marathon career in Baltimore?

Charm City is an amazing place to run, and CSE has been such a great supporter of my mission, I couldn’t think of a better place to do my last half.

Anything else you would like to share/tell us?

Though this is my last half, I will continue to do 5k and 10k runs to honor Fallen Heroes for as long as I can. Even when I am unable to run/walk races, I will continue to volunteer at CSE events.
