E,
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE Golden BC has a wide range of experiences available for every age group and for every time schedule. We have an experience here that’s just right for you. From easy, in-town pathways that can be discovered in just an hour or two, to wild, multi-day adventures that explore the vast mountain wilderness around us, to everything in between, Golden has it all. Come enjoy our heritage sites, leave the beaten path and enjoy our natural outdoor settings.
Look for these ratings. Throughout this Travel Planner there are a number of pages with suggested experiences for you. We have rated these experiences according to their difficulty level. For most activities there’s an easy, a moderate and a challenging way to enjoy them. These suggestions will highlight some of the most common experiences available to a traveler to Golden and Kicking Horse Country.
EASIEST
Perfect for families and children and typically the easiest way to participate in this activity. These activities have a high degree of organization and involve very little risk and a minimal physical effort.
MODERATE May require some exploration on behalf of the participants and may be mildly strenuous in nature.
CHALLENGING Will require exploration and initiative. May involve strenuous physical activity and an adventurous attitude.
golden history
GREEN FORESTS + BLUE COLLARS + SWISS RED OUR COLOURFUL HISTORY IS BUILT ON INTEGRITY, HARD WORK AND THE OL’ PIONEER SPIRIT It was adventure that brought the first explorers over the Rocky Mountains. But it was the treasures of Golden that made them stay. The area still exudes the same feelings of discovery and exploration the first pioneers felt. It was back in 1807 when David Thompson first crossed over the Rocky Mountains and traveled along the Blaeberry River to the future site of Golden. In search of the Columbia River and, ultimately, a passage to the Pacific Ocean, it was Thompson’s sense of exploration that led him here. Thompson’s travels took him to the junction of the legendary Columbia and Kicking Horse Rivers.
CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY Golden would simply not exist without the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). In fact, the railway’s presence helped establish Golden’s place in Canada. As the CPR constructed its cross-country network of rails, it used Golden as a base camp as it extended further into the western part of B.C. The railway was completed in 1885 and Golden soon became a prominent stop on the line. The CPR also
paved the way for the Trans-Canada Highway, which helped to transform the area from forest outpost to a true community.
SWISS GUIDES
FORESTS
The CPR recognized many travelers through Golden would want to stay to explore and discover the incredible area for themselves. To this end, the CPR hired Swiss guides to assist in providing connections to this compelling yet rugged landscape. In 1899, Eduard Feuz Sr. and Christian Haesler came to Canada from Switzerland to serve as mountain guides. In 1911, the CPR built homes for them as well as other guides in Golden and named it ‘Swiss Village’, or ‘Edelweiss'.
For well over a century, Golden’s fortunes have been linked with the forest industry. Sawmills have come and gone, been burned down and rebuilt and are wrapped in a list of owners as long as a Douglas Fir log. Where the health of the industry went, so went Golden’s well being. The forest industry was initiated with the building of the CPR line, which required 3,000 railroad ties per mile. There was also demand for buildings, bridges, trestles and snowsheds, some of which took huge quantities of large timber.
This village provided a base for the nowfamous Canadian Alpine Club which, in turn, drew many more guides from Switzerland in the

following years. The village is still situated 1.5 kilometres west of Golden.
golden today Columbia Mountains. The town sits at the north end of the Columbia River Wetlands – an area 180 kilometres in length that supports over 300 species of birds and mammals. Coming from the east, Golden is the provincial gateway to British Columbia and the majestic Purcell and Selkirk mountain ranges. Coming from the west, Golden is the gateway to the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Golden is close to six of the most stunning National Parks Canada has to offer: Banff, Glacier, Jasper, Kootenay, Mount Revelstoke and Yoho. These parks offers some of the best scenery and outdoor recreation adventure opportunities available anywhere in the world. Did someone just say ‘mountain paradise’? Ask any local their favourite thing about Golden, and chances are they’ll say ‘climate'. Golden has four very distinct seasons, each with its own virtues: spring is a bright and renewing season–the perfect time to shed those long johns and get out for a hike; summer is a time for long, hot days ideal for mountain biking or playing in stunning aquamarine rivers; fall is a crispy cornucopia of brisk, fresh temperatures that give way to a magical winter season that boasts some of the driest and most

Golden is situated between the Rocky and
abundant champagne powder in Canada– perfect for world-class skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. Despite the obvious opportunities for goofing off, the community remains true to its industrial heritage–its two main employers, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and the Louisiana Pacific mill anchor the north and south ends of the town. Golden is a vibrant, rapidly diversifying town with a profound sense of community spirit.
With tourism playing an increased role in its personality, Golden is attracting people who want to experience a real, authentic B.C. community in a natural, unspoiled mountain setting. It’s a lot to be proud of, we know. It would be easy to swagger around like we owned the place. But this down-to-earth town is a community in the truest sense of the word. The people here are warm and welcoming and those who have chosen Golden as their home speak humbly about how much this special place means to them.
Did you know? Trans-Canada Highway Did you know that 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Trans-Canada highway being built through Rogers Pass? While the railway was built many years earlier, it was only in 1962 that this famous stretch of road was opened for vehicle traffic. These days, millions of people a year make the drive through this spectacular pass, where glaciers and amazing vistas can still be found.

Swiss Guides 100 Years Did you know that 2012 marked the 100th anniversary of the Swiss mountain guides immigrating to Canada? You can learn all about how this group of unique people made their mark on Golden by visiting the Golden Museum.
Miro Micovsky 1968-2011 Miro Micovsky was a motivated climber, skier, kayaker, biker and marketer who embodied the spirit of mountain adventure and self-determination in Golden. His hard work at Tourism Golden and his vision for how Kicking Horse Country should be portrayed is still
making an impact today. Sadly, Miro lost his battle with cancer in 2011. He is missed by many and his character lives on in all who choose to adventure in Kicking Horse Country.

Accommodations THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME,
Micovsky photo
BUT WE HAVE GREAT PLACES TO STAY WHILE YOU PLAY.
Golden is known as a spectacular recreation playground. Enjoying what Golden has to offer is even better after a great night’s sleep. It’s a good thing there are plenty of places to rest up before your next adventure. FRONT COUNTRY LODGES Front Country Lodges are cottage or cabin-type accommodations found in rural, often remote areas but are accessible by road. Although these lodges provide for a cozy, sometimes even surprisingly luxurious stay, you often won’t find TVs, phones or air-conditioning. Most Front Country Lodges are open year-round.
BED & BREAKFASTS B&B’s are typically offered in a private, owneroperated residence located either in town or in a rural area. In most cases, the owner of the home lives in one part of the house while running the guesthouse. Guestrooms are decorated according to the owner’s taste and style. Because this kind of operation is small,
the service is personalized and getting to know the owners is often half the charm (A tasty homemade breakfast is the other half!).
provide space and/or hook-ups for tents, tent trailers, recreational vehicles or fifth wheels.
MOTELS
Vacation Homes are fully furnished houses or condominiums that usually come with full kitchens and laundry facilities.
Primarily designed to offer sleeping accommodation only, motels are generally priced lower than resorts or hotels. Each room or unit is equipped with a private bath, and some units may feature full or partial kitchenettes.
CABINS & COTTAGES
HOTELS
These accommodations are often very comfortable and quite rustic. Cabins and cottages usually have cooking facilities, but don’t necessarily include a full kitchen.
CAMPGROUNDS & RV PARKS
Perfect for people who desire comfort and convenience. Hotels generally provide full food and licensed facilities, elevators, indoor pool and health club/gym facilities. All rooms are accessed from within the hotel and often a 24-hour front desk service is provided.
If sleeping close to the ground is more your style, Golden has plenty of great places to pitch your tent or park your RV. Campgrounds

Winter wonderland
Golden is a mountain playground in winter. There are so many activities to do here when the snow is on the ground that it takes several days just to try them all. Don’t let our rugged mountains intimidate you, there’s an easy way to experience all that winter has for you. From the new Learning Centre at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort–where learning to ski just got even easier–to strolling over our famous pedestrian bridge there’s a comfortable way to enjoy Golden. Take an hour for a public skate at one of our outdoor rinks in town, rent some cross country ski gear and do one of the small loops or just enjoy a nice coffee and a book at a local café and meet some locals. Enjoy the freedom of breathing cold, crisp mountain air while exercising. From the excellent groomed runs (piste) at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, to manicured skate ski loops at the Dawn Mountain Cross Country facility there are a ton of fun things to do in Golden that you’ll enjoy. Take the kids tobogganing at Snake Hill, or rev up a snowmobile and take a maintained trail deep into the mountains.
Rise to the challenge that the mountains can present; there’s advanced terrain waiting for you at the ski resort, on the cross country track, in most snowmobile zones and in the backcountry. Tread carefully and understand the risks you are taking while enjoying the thrill and excitement of exploring what you’re capable of.

snowmobiling G
olden is a renowned snowmobiling mecca because of the diverse terrain, deep snowfalls, spectacular scenery and proximity to nearby services. The options for riding are virtually endless and we have trails that cater to first time riders, intermediates and challenging terrain for experienced mountain riders. The Golden Snowmobile Trail Society and the Golden Snowmobile Club work hard to maintain trails in 3 major areas: Gorman Lake, Quartz Creek and Silent Pass. While exploring downtown Golden, take a trip over the Kicking Horse River Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge is the longest freestanding timber frame bridge in Canada. Over 100 timber framers came from all over the US, Europe and Canada to help build and raise the bridge.
For an up-close and personal look at one of the world’s most misunderstood creatures, check out the Northern Lights Wolf Centre. The centre promotes conservation of wolves and bears and provides informative and interactive education experiences. But just tell the kids they’ll be able to hang out with real, live wolves!
For a sky high experience, take the gondola up to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and stand on top of the world. Dine at 7,700 ft. at the Eagle’s Eye Restaurant. While you’re there, check out the Grizzly Bear Refuge. The refuge offers interpretive tours to learn more about ‘Boo’, their resident grizzly.
Golden also offers myriad trails, campgrounds and outdoor and indoor fun. And don’t tell the kids, but there’s more than a few great places for ice cream. Sweet!

a RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
For Kicking Horse River, come late springtime (around late-May or early-June) when that snow is melting and all that run-off comes barreling down the mountains. High water season lasts about six weeks, until about mid-July, but great paddling trips can be enjoyed from May to September. If
whitewater isn’t your speed, check out some of the flatwater trips in a sea kayak or canoe. There are many casual level I or II routes for those wanting an exhilarating day without the daredevil component. Check out the Columbia or Blaeberry Rivers for a day of comfortable current and beautiful wildlife. Depending on the time of year, look for moose, deer, elk, black bears, grizzly bears, mountain goats and bald eagles along the river banks.

There are over ten rivers within an hour-and-a-half drive from Golden. With skill levels ranging from I (calm water, scenic routes) to V (expert, or ‘hero route’), there are incredible routes for every paddler.

It doesn’t matter if you believe in Peter Pan, Frankenstein or Superman, all you’ll wanna do is… Biiicycle! Biiicycle! When it comes to all-star terrain for mountain biking, Golden has it cranked up. Golden is a community that wholeheartedly welcomes the mountain biking culture. With some of the best biking terrain in North America, it’s begging you to ride! Golden is blessed with Mount 7, one of the finest and most challenging downhill systems in Canada. Mount 7 boasts several double black diamond trails. This is the place to push it (the skills, not the bike). The steep singletrack is a guaranteed rush for intermediate to advanced riders. With various levels of difficulty and numerous offshoot trails with stunts and ladders, bombing Mount 7 provides stunning valley views, some great drops and a pipeline reminiscent of a bobsled course gone stupid.
Prefer a great single-track, cross-country trail to serious ups and downs? Try the trails near the bottom section of Mount 7, or check out our single-track heaven - 48km of crosscountry bike trails at Moonraker and Canyon Creek. Want all the buzz of the downhill run without the lung buster ride to the top? Head over to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and take the chairlift or gondola up the mountain. After that cushy ride up, get ready for 1,200m (4,000 feet) of serious single-track downhill. Rentals available. For more information on mountain biking in the Golden area go to www.goldencyclingclub.com.
The Golden Community Bike Program is underway. Two “Cycle Station” hubs are located at the Golden Municipal Campground and Spirit Square, where the bikes can be accessed with a swipe card available through membership packages. We’re the first community in British Columbia to have a third generation bike share system, with the Cycle Stations running on a solar-powered battery to keep bikes locked 24-hrs a day. Members who receive a swipe card can access the bikes by inserting their card, selecting a bike and riding away. Once a member is done their ride, they can return the bike back to the location they initially selected or place the bike in another Cycle Station at a different location. The bikes are all Kona Africa Threes – a super cool ride for around town and a perfect way to catch a lot of the trails or see a show down in the square this summer. Joining the program is easy and you can be a daily, monthly, or seasonal member. Forms are available at the Town of Golden office located at 810 9th Ave. S. And day passes are available at the Golden Municipal Campground and Dreamcatcher Hostel. For more information visit our website. www.town.golden.bc.ca
KICKING HORSE BIKE PARK Ride Kicking Horse Bike Park and enjoy lift access to an array of stunts and flowy dirt-jump trails. With this big mountain riding experience at your disposal, you’ll be glad you saved all your energy for the ride down. The bike program at Kicking Horse offers private guides, premium bike rentals and even lessons and packages for beginners. HIKING AROUND GOLDEN

hiking
Golden BC is located in The Rocky Mountain Trench surrounded by The Rocky, Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. Being in the heart of six National Parks and two historic rivers, the Kicking Horse and Columbia, there is no shortage of outdoor activities for the entire family to enjoy year round. Below are just a small handful of the various hiking trails available in our backyard. For detailed information on a particular hike, including access, please visit: www. GoldenHikes.ca. ROTARY TRAILS Access: Easy Time: 2 hours for the entire trail Distance: 7 km Change in elevation: 32 m
The Rotary Trail is a great hike early in the season, on days when you only have a brief period of time available, or when you just do not feel like anything more strenuous. Entirely inside town limits, it includes riverside walks, great views and is easy for the whole family.
DAWN MOUNTAIN SKI TRAILS The Nordic ski trails at Dawn Mountain, near the foot of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, are available for hiking during the off-season. Trail maps are available at the trailhead, and you can find a route to suit any time schedule and energy level.
Access: Easy Time: Various Distance: Up to 25km Change in elevation: 50 m
CANYON CREEK Access: Easy Time: 2 hr Distance: 4 km Change in elevation: gain 235 m

MOUNT SIR DONALD Access: Easy Time: 3 hr Distance: 4.4 km Change in elevation: gain 1000 m 28 | www.TourismGolden.com
A favourite hike when short on time. The trail follows the north rim of Canyon Creek, reaching three lookouts at different elevations. The access is all on paved roads, the walking is easy on old logging roads or good trails, except the beginning stretch, and you can turn around anywhere if time is tight. Also a good early or late season hike because of its low elevation.
A hike up to the paraglider launch area, just below the peak of Mount 7. Great views of the Columbia Valley, and you might see hang gliders and paragliders taking off. The access to the paragliding launch area is a 14 km drive on a logging road, a vehicle with high clearance is recommended.
Steep in parts, this trail leads to spectacular views at the base of the west wall of Mount Sir Donald.
WAPTA FALLS
An easy stroll to the top of the falls. Often used by nearby campers for a daily jog. Suitable for small children. Don't expect to be alone.
Access: Easy Time: 30 min to the top of the falls Distance: 2.3 km Change in elevation: gain 15 m, lose 60 m at the falls.

are a few different trails along the top of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Either a short hike along CPR ridge; follow the path south to Super Bowl; or head north towards the Dogtooth range (Moderate).
One of Golden’s signature hikes on a well built trail to a beautiful alpine lake. The access road is a logging road and the 17 km can be pretty rough, a vehicle with high clearance is recommended. Once parked, the terrain is moderate, there is a section where you walk through a scree field with rocks that are ‘designed’ as steps.
A pleasant hike on a National Parks maintained trail leads to a panorama of the Kicking Horse and Beaverfoot river valleys. Don't expect to be alone. There are two old fire lookouts at two different elevations.
Like most Glacier National Park hikes, this one is steep. Unlike the others, the Hermit trail leads to a beautiful alpine bowl instead of a rocky ridge.
MOUNTAINEERING
N I A T N U O M O N AIN’T HIGH ENOUGH... For mountaineering Golden is at the peak of the game. The parks and mountains around Golden – Yoho and Glacier National Parks and Bugaboo Spires – are renowned as some of the unsurpassable areas for North American alpinism. Golden is the birthplace of North American recreational mountaineering. In 1885, Canadian botanist J. Macoun and his son made the first recorded climbs in Rogers Pass. In 1888, British clergymen Rev. Henry Swanzy and Rev. William Spotswood Green made the first technical ascents in the range. By 1899 Canadian Pacific hired climbing guides Eduard Feuz Sr. and Christian Hasler from Interlaken, Switzerland to work at Glacier House, where they were guiding and at the same time promoting mountaineering in the Selkirks.
Kicking Horse Country has three of the “Classic 50 Climbs in North America”
Northwest Ridge of Mt. Sir Donald: 3,297 m (10,816 ft) Located near Rogers Pass, 80 km west of Golden, this legendary route was first climbed on September 3, 1903 by Eduard Feuz, Christian Bohren, and E. Tewes. Beckey- Chouinard Route on South Howser Tower: 3,364m (11,037 ft) Located in Bugaboo Provincial Park - Purcell Mountains; southwest of Golden. Two climbing icons, Fred Beckey and Yvon Chouinard,
tackled the west buttress in 1961. This is now one of the most coveted routes in the Bugaboos. East Ridge of Bugaboo Spire: 3,204 m (10,512 ft) Located in Bugaboo Provincial Park - Purcell Mountains; southwest of Golden. A stellar line with tremendous drops on either side and spectacular views. This peak was first climbed in 1958.
KICKING HORSE MOUNTAIN RESORT– ALPINE HIKING Start with a quick gondola ride to the top and get whisked above the clouds to 7,700 feet. Then hike along the spines of the Dogtooth Range, which are surrounded by panoramic views of the Purcell, Selkirk, and Rocky Mountain Ranges. Stroll the easy CPR Ridge Walk above Crystal Bowl and Bowl Over that has strategic viewpoints overlooking Golden and the Blaeberry River valley. For the adventurous, scramble the more challenging Terminator Ridge Trail around the Super Bowl saddle to the alpine meadows atop T2’s summit. Plan for lunch at the award winning Eagle’s Eye Restaurant. • VISA, MC, Amex, Interac accepted

Set at the confluence of the tremendous Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers, Golden BC is at the heart of six spectacular Mountain National Parks, including four in the Canadian Rockies. More than 100 years ago, the Canadian Pacific Railway company (CPR) completed the iron link that binds Canada together. In the dramatic sections that surround Golden–from Yoho NP through the Kicking Horse Canyon to Glacier NP–the CPR found its greatest challenges and some of earth's most sublime scenery. Thus from 1885, pioneering travellers have come to create legacies of epic mountain experiences, journeys and discoveries. And the spirit of adventure continues, although exploring these paths is much easier and accessible today. Golden's surroundings continue to lure visitors with unspoken promises of excitement and freedom, and also with whispers of past ambitions. Come and experience Golden and Kicking Horse Country's well-established recreational adventure options, wildlife and diverse mountain culture.

Columbia River & Wetlands Corridor This is one of the longest intact wetlands in North America, the headwaters for the Columbia River system, and comprises a regionally unparalleled diversity. The Columbia Wetlands is a 15,070 hectare wetland in the Columbia Valley region of southeastern British Columbia, Canada. From its source at Canal Flats, the Columbia River (and its Wetlands) meanders northward past Golden confined within a broad valley separating the Rocky and Purcell Mountains. South of Golden run the adjacent CPR and Hwy 93/95 and north of Golden are the railway and Hwy 1.
Easy: Friends of the Columbia Wetlands have highway pullouts and Columbia Wetlands interpretive signs along this corridor. The Rotary Trails and Confluence Park trails in Golden offer interpretive information about river heritage, First Nations, 1807 explorer David Thompson, and the Riverboats Era under Captain Armstrong.

Kicking Horse Pass - Yoho Park Corridor
In 2012, the Trans Canada Highway celebrates 50 years of driving over Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park. This direct route through the mountains that cut out hours of car travel was made possible with the inclusion of innovative snow sheds that are key for safe travel through avalanche country where snow depth can reach over 15 metres. For Glacier's first 75 years, the CPR was the only way to travel to the Park and stop at Rogers Pass. In 1899, CPR brought over two Swiss mountain guides to safely lead aspiring mountaineers drawn to the unclimbed mountains. Soon more mountain guides, horses, packers and camp cooks were needed to meet the demand from adventure seekers in the summer months. Glacier, Yoho and Lake Louise became the trailheads for the second generation of certified Swiss mountain guides, who with their young families emigrated to Canada in 1911 to live in speciallymade Edelweiss Village near Golden. Today you can enjoy the true nature and culture of these mountains by exploring the trailheads pioneered by these guides in both summer and winter. Rogers Pass Visitor Centre is a must stop as its interpretive programs, assistance and exhibits will put you on the right path to enjoy the area's history and current offerings.

The Canadian Rockies are well known for their lakes and waterfalls and Yoho excels in these scenic wonders. Takakkaw, Twin & Wapta Falls, Lake O'Hara and Emerald Lake are a few of the many crown jewels to explore. Yoho has twenty-eight 3,000+m peaks that are the uplifted, twisted and broken remnants of ancient seabeds. In 1909, Charles Walcott discovered the fantastical remains of soft-bodied sea animals that lived more than 500 million years ago perfectly preserved in shale rock. The Burgess Shale, as it has become known, near the town of Field, is now a UN World Heritage Site. From Yoho it is only a short drive to explore world-renowned Lake Louise, Banff, the Icefields Parkway and Jasper. The Kicking Horse Canyon section of Hwy. 1 is in the midst of being rebuilt with amazing bridges that are truly modern engineering feats that conjure up memories of the CPR's challenges building the Spiral Tunnels more than 100 years ago. Suggested for Everyone: Field Visitor & Interpretive Centre Yoho offers spectacular scenery and over 400 km of hiking trails. Most of these trails, ranging from short walks to full day hikes, are described in the Backcountry Guide to Yoho National Park. jumped off a cliff, would you do it, too?” Guess what? Here’s your chance to say ‘yes’ and mean it. Get to Golden and get set to kiss the sky! Golden is a world renowned gliding Shangri-La. Paragliding and hang gliding embody the sheer thrill of flying through the sky without an engine. Paragliders are a free-flying, foot-launched wing with the pilot attached and suspended in a harness below. Gliders look for thermals or ‘updrafts’ of warm air that enable them to fly for hours and range over wide distances. In fact, paragliders can climb faster than some aircraft:
flight was recently described in the prominent glider magazine Cross Country as one of the “top, classic cross-country flights of all time.” In fact, eight world records for distance and A 206 Jet Ranger helicopter climbs at 800 feet per time have been set from the launch at Mount 7. minute while an expert paraglider in a climb can reach speeds upwards of 2,000 feet per minute! Imagine three mountain ranges, two rivers, and one vast expanse of blue sky. Now imagine a Mount 7, one of Golden’s most spectacular bird’s eye view. golf
Growing from a modest nine-hole golf course in 1986 to its superb status today, the Golden Golf Course is revered by golf aficionados as one of the finest places to tee off in the Canadian Rockies.
How fine? This 18-hole championship course has been consistently rated a solid four out of five by US-based Golf Digest magazine. SCOREGolf Magazine has also rated the course in the top 100 golf courses in Canada. As well, SCOREGolf rated the 11th hole the best par four in B.C. The 6,825 yards from the back tees also became the perfect setting to host the B.C. Amateur Championship tournament in 2006.

Several local residents, who also happened to be golf enthusiasts, came up with the idea to build a golf course. Their vision was to bring golf to Golden in an area where there was no traffic, houses or hotels. The chosen location was the west side of the Columbia River–a beautiful natural landscape with no development. Much of the physical work to build the course was done by volunteers of the Golden Golf Club Society and, before long, the Golden Golf Course was a reality.

Going back more than 100 years, adventurers and settlers arrived in Golden from around the world, travelling on foot, by pack train, steamboat down the Columbia River, or on the Canadian Pacific Railway. They were attracted by the opportunity for work, the vast forests and a wide fertile valley in which they could farm and hunt; a place for quick pickings or a family to settle and grow. And grow they have. Many descendants of those original families still thrive in Golden today and their multi-cultural heritage infuses our community’s cultural character. Add to that mix the modern-day adventurers and settlers who have arrived in the last 30 years or so and who, by now, can comfortably call themselves ‘locals’. Then, finally top that off with the more recent arrivals... oh maybe
in the last 10 years say... who have come to settle in this spectacular and progressive mountain community and you have a real western working town enlivened by a worldly perspective, steeped in a heritage past and nurtured by a social consciousness of good old-fashioned neighbourliness. All in all, we love our town and welcome you to come and visit and participate in our cultural events and festivities. We create them for ourselves, but you’re welcome too. Come be our guest. You never know, like many of us, you may come for the adventure and settle for a lifetime. Check out our newly renovated Civic Centre: opening in 2012

Summer at The Spirit Square: During the summer months, great musical artists on the Canadian festival circuit drop into town every week to perform in our Spirit Square. And the concerts are all-ages and free. On Wednesday afternoons, local farmers and artisans set up tents downtown for our weekly Farmers Market. Local Galleries: Local galleries feature fine art and home-made crafts from more than 80 local and regional artists. Club Scene: Whether it’s winter or summer, Golden’s club scene goes late into the night all year round offering up local and visiting DJs and indie bands. History and Our Community: Before you leave town, set aside some good time to visit the Golden Museum and take a walk back into our community’s storied past. And that about sums up our community. The pioneer spirit still lives on, grounded in a powerful heritage, surrounded by a spectacular wilderness, and continually venturing towards a vision of community that cares for our own and welcomes those adventurers who drop in for a visit.
