The procedure usually takes less than an hour and uses laser energy delivered in a thin ďŹ beroptic probe. The difference between EVLA and sclerotherapy is that EVLA is aimed at treating larger veins using laser energy, while sclerotherapy involves a series of small injections of a solution into smaller more superďŹ cial veins. :KR LV D JRRG FDQGLGDWH IRU (9/$" Any patient that suffers from varicose vein disease and is in good general health is a good candidate for EVLA. Patients that are pregnant or have a history of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) are not. Patients should be thoroughly evaluated by a physician and require an ultrasound to determine if EVLA is the best treatment option for them. +RZ LV (9/$ SHUIRUPHG" EVLA is a 45 minute procedure where a catheter is inserted into the defective vein. The procedure is done under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance. A laser is threaded into the catheter and heats the lining of the vein. Then it is slowly pulled out of the vein, damaging it and causing it to shrink and seal shut. Once this happens, blood can no longer ďŹ&#x201A;ow through the vein. This eliminates the pressure in the vein that caused it to bulge. There is no incision other than a small puncture where the catheter was inserted. :KDW DUH WKH ULVNV DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK (9/$" Complications from EVLA are extremely rare. These may include numbness and tingling over the treated area, skin infection at the puncture site, DVT (deep vein thrombosis or blood clot which is rare) and phlebitis, which is redness, warmth and swelling of the treated vein. To minimize any risk associated with EVLA, we encourage patients to walk a lot after the procedure, wearing compression stockings and following up with a post procedure ultrasound. :KDW LV WKH UHFRYHU\ WLPH" Patients are immediately able to get up and walk following the procedure. They may experience some mild soreness, redness and bruising in the week following the procedure, but this is usually resolved by the end of the second week. Some patients may also feel a pulling sensation or tightness in the calf or thigh, but this is normal and soon passes as well. These symptoms can be managed by taking a non-aspirin anti-inďŹ&#x201A;ammatory for a few days following the procedure. Compression stockings are also required for a week or two following EVLA. This helps reduce swelling, protects against blood clots and speeds up the recovery process. After the procedure, walking and normal daily activities are encouraged. Rigorous exercise such as running, high impact aerobics and heavy weightlifting should be avoided for a week or two to get the best possible results from the procedure. +RZ VXFFHVVIXO LV (9/$" After undergoing the procedure, patients enjoy a 98 percent success rate.

Dr. Robert A. Musson is a native of Akron, Ohio. After receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of Akron in 1985, he attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, where he received his M.D. in 1989. He joined Circulatory Centers in 1992, and it was here that he received additional training in the field of Phlebology, or vein care medicine.

Dr. Musson is an Active Physician Member of The American College of Phlebology, the principal American professional society in Phlebology. Dr. Musson is also an accomplished author, and he has written an informative book on the subject of varicose veins titled Varicose Veins and Spider Veins: Myths and Realities.

Gifts – The Spin Stops Here I sometimes watch O’Reily’s The Factor. It is a fun show. He cheerleads for Christmas each holiday season. I don’t mind. Some viewers are getting tired of it. Last night he ended the show by asking his viewers to remember a favorite gift they had received over the years. Great question. I immediately found myself missing my sister who passed two years ago. I found myself calling her daughter and leaving a teary message about the gifts her mom had given me over my lifetime—all of them were my favorites.

In the latter years of her life we struggled with sibling issues. Families can be filled with such conflicts about values, estate distributions, mom liked you best kind of stuff.

Such issues pollute an otherwise precious connection. I recalled the unforgettable gifts I had received from my sister…a pink petticoat that looked like a wedding cake, the helicopter ride when I was 10 where I looked down upon a monopoly board world, the puppets and puppet stage she got for me and my cousin, Diane, Vonni would write and direct productions for Diane and me to act out. We had hours of fun with those puppets. Then there were the gifts of values….Vonni taught me to love books and to marvel at the promises of Christ. She taught me to keep fighting to keep the family together on holidays and important occasions. She gave me the gift of always picking up the phone when I called to listen to my problems and celebrate my accomplishments. She gave me the gift of time, attending my weddings when they were very far away and expensive and getting to my husband’s funeral hundreds of miles away. She gave me the gift of showing up. Thanks O’Reily for inspiring me to remember these loving times. Recall the gifts in your life. They are many. In fact, I am trying to do it all day every day…not just at Christmas. Recall every precious moment of every relationship. See past all faults to the God self in each person. The spin stops here. It is surprising. It is thrilling.

C. McElhinney, Orthodontist located in Stow, is pleased to announce our latest Orthodontic Scholarship recipients.

2011 First Quarter Recipients Tiffany Keller A freshman at Stow High School, Tiffany is a "great student, person and role model" according to her teacher Mr. Eckart.

Already a varsity soccer player, she shows leadership on her soccer team and is often heard giving classmates and teammates much needed encouragement or a kind compliment. "I want to become a sports therapist or sports trainer when I graduate from college. When I was little, I bumped my tooth on a table and it has been black ever since. They said it would fall out, but never did. I used to love to smile until everyone started to make fun of me." Tiffany's gift back to Dr. Mac is a beautiful poem of thanks.. "I wanna smile just to smile…I can finally smile for me, and finally be me."

A freshman at Cuyahoga Falls High School, Brooke a 10 year Girl Scout who enjoys skiing, photography and making jewelry. Her first love is art. " I want to go to the Cleveland Institute of Art and become a nature photographer, as well as study to become an art teacher. At school people call me snaggletooth and it destroys my self confidence, I am embarrassed by my smile." says Brooke.

Luke Donatelli A freshman at Archbishop Hoban High School, Luke is active in bowling, basketball, youth groups and choir. "My goal is to go to college and major in broadcasting. I want braces to have a beautiful smile, I am embarrassed because my two front teeth are split." says Luke. "This young man is an honor student with a positive attitude and has a reputation as being respectful and trustworthy, though a little shy." says Luke's teacher Sister Madigan.

Marissa Yaworsky A shy 7th grade student at Tallmadge Middle School, Marissa likes to go to Zumba with her cousin and hopes to be a nurse or teacher in the future. With both of her grandparents in poor health, the family relies on Marissa as a caretaker when her mother is working. Adult Children Caring for Aging Parents Face Role Reversal

by Jodi Wood RN BSN President Visiting Angels of Greater Akron, OH The catch phrase says it all… adult children who are caring for their parents while also raising their own family are known as “the sandwich generation”.

These family caregivers find themselves pulled in many directions, caring for a parent, raising their children, and often holding down a job as well.

On top of all of this, adult caregivers are thrust into the awkward and often unwanted position of feeling like they are parenting their own parents. It can be unsettling to find yourself in this role. This reversal in the parenting role can give rise to stress for both parents and caregivers.

A recent survey by the National Alliance for Care Giving and the

American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) found that an estimated 22.4 million U.S. households, nearly 1 in 4 are providing care to someone age 50 or older or have provided care within the last 12 months.

As these family caregivers have discovered, it takes a lot of time, energy and patience to care for an aging loved one, and often it can seem like all of these attributes are in short supply.

It’s not surprising, then, that guilt coupled with resentment are prevalent emotions among family caregivers.

A caregiver’s life can be turned upside down. Despite the fact that they love their parents, caring for a parent is a big responsibility that affects the whole family. Plans for the immediate future go out the window. Schedules that were already jam packed and complicated need reworked. Children

may resent the new demands for their parents’ time and attention.

With these added stressors, experts emphasize the importance of caretakers looking after their own physical and emotional health. The old adage is true. “You can’t take care of someone else without taking care of yourself first”. This involves getting help from others, whether it is from siblings, a support group, or a home care service.

State. However, the focus of this article is not to re-hash those topics but to take a hard look at child abuse and what adults can do to keep children safe.

adults who love children or work with them are abusers! Those who sexually abuse children are drawn to settings where they can gain easy access to children.

Statistics indicate that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Sadly, many of these children will not disclose the abuse immediately and some may never disclose the abuse.

Children who have been sexually abused may suffer emotionally, psychologically, mentally and physically and many will suffer in silence. So what can adults do to prevent child abuse?

• Most abuse occurs in one-on-one situations. In order to protect children, adults must insist that another person be present. Insist that all organizations that deal with children have policies in place that protect children from one-adult/one-child situations.

• Learn the facts and understand the risks of child sexual abuse. Anyone can be a victim and anyone can be an abuser. Most children are abused by someone that is known and trusted by the child and the family. This is not to say that all

• Physical signs of sex abuse are not common in children, however emotional or behavioral signs are more common. Knowing the warning signs helps parents know when something might be wrong.

• Child abuse thrives in an environment of fear and denial. Learning about child abuse, molesters and the process of grooming will help adults know when a situation is questionable. Knowledge gives adults the strength to trust their intuitions and respond to their suspicions.

As a community, we are all responsible for the safety of our children. By paying attention, asking questions, thinking about the safety of children and acting on our suspicions, we can make the world a safer place for children.

QUIET QUIETTIME TIME This is a very hectic season and often fosters confusion, exhaustion, frustration and hurry. We at The Women’s Journal wish you peace. From Shhh…Listening For God: Silence is the golden nugget of biblical spirituality. To lay claim to a place, a sacred place, a safe place, where the true riches are found, is to be genuinely celebrated. When it is found, like those digging in the mine, panning for that first sight of sparkling glitter, joy overflows. Hard work has finally paid off. To discover such a place is the reward of pilgrimage. Once we have arrived and tasted of the experience, we will return again and again. Many of us have grown quite accustomed to the noisy world of modern day life. People read their paperless books in busy coffee shops. We are probably not even aware how clamorous life is until we attempt to quiet ourselves. No wonder Jesus said, “go into your room (your closet) and shut the door.”

As a recovering, confessed workaholic, I found busyness to be an idolized addiction. The more I produced, the more my self-esteem was massaged; hence, the more accolades I was given and the better I felt. Truly masculine? Time will tell. Working all the time may be a good way to hide, but it is a very poor healer of the inner sanctum where wounds and hurts are deeply layered. Carl Jung discerningly concluded, “Hurry is not of the Devil, it is the Devil.” Silence can and will be our best friend. Silence will inform. Silence will communicate more than we care to know. But silence will always convey all that we need to know. The Divine will meet us there. As we create the space, God will fill it.

PRACTICING THE SABBATH There are many aspects to Sabbath observance. It is easy to become overwhelmed, so start with one or two things. For example, don’t work; take time with your family. Say no to one or two of the endless demands and distractions that come to you all week long. Make the day a time to unwind and rest. Prepare a Sabbath meal to share with others and invite someone over who is lonely who you wouldn’t normally include. Spend time being aware of your life and all you have to be thankful for. Offer thanks in any way you feel is suitable. Perhaps attend a synagogue.

Remember the essence of Sabbath, which is non doing, taking one’s hands off the world, letting go of control, recognizing, acknowledging, and honoring a Higher Power, connecting with it in every way.

GUIDELINES to ZEN PRACTICE

PRACTICING NONDOING

Zazen meditation is a wonderful basis for the practice of non-doing. Spend some time sitting each day. Watch your thoughts arise but do not chase after them. Return to the moment, return to your breath or to your body sensations. In life, when a strong reaction arises, rather than act on it, stop, breathe, and practice non doing. Stay in your center and remain aware of what’s going on inside. This is active and vital. Remain fully aware without taking action. Let go of judgments and compulsivity of all kinds.

In action, in life itself, try to stop interfering. Let things take their course. Allow a person to be who they are; allow yourself to be who you are as well. Stop pushing. Let solutions to problems arise in their own way, at their own time. Breathe. Just be. Enjoy a cup of tea. There is a wonderful Lojong (Tibetan Buddhist) teaching that says, “Take your whole time to drink your cup of tea.”

Protect Yourself From Crime Giving Back

By Sherri Bevan Walsh Summit County Prosecutor Everyone knows my office is responsible for prosecuting high-level criminal offenses. What most people probably do not know is how involved we are in the community in matters that do not relate directly to crime.

I believe that if you get to know your neighbors and take an active interest in your surroundings, you become invested in your community. And your community becomes invested in you.

This is true for individuals as well as businesses, nonprofit agencies and government offices. And when you are invested in something, you want to make it better.

My office is staffed by people who want to make this community a better place.

That’s why they work long hours on emotionally draining cases. That’s why they put their hearts into every case.

That’s why they’re here instead of a private law firm.

One of the biggest ways we’ve found to give back to the community is through our Community Relations Committee.

The committee organizes events and activities to support Summit County, such as serving hot lunches at Open M, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, collecting donations for the AkronCanton Regional Foodbank and other nonprofit organizations and buying gifts for those who can’t afford to put anything under their Christmas tree.

November and December are our most active months for charitable efforts, but throughout the year we actively participate in and support Summit County. We have a strong community outreach program that seeks to educate Summit County residents on what our office does, programs we offer and how to stay safe.

We participate in the National Night Out Against Crime, an annual campaign in which law enforcement and community organizations host a block party or other evening event to raise awareness of crime and drug prevention. This event also unites neighbors against crime and criminals. We hold an annual Safety Kids Calendar contest for area students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades to submit posters they create to illustrate our 12 Rules for Staying Safe. The winning posters are included in our yearly Safety Kids Calendar. We recently started hosting

mother-daughter self-defense classes.

And we show our support at many other community events.

I am proud of the work my staff does, both in and out of the office. Together, we are part of a larger community.

Coordinator, SUPPORT Hotline, Portage Path Behavioral Health Co-Facilitator, Summit County Suicide Prevention Coalition The idea that suicides occur more frequently during the holiday season is a myth that has been around for a long time. Media reports on suicide have been tracked by The Annenberg Public Policy Center since 2000. They report that 50% of articles written during the 2009–2010 holiday season perpetuated this myth. According to the CDC, the suicide rate is, in fact, the lowest in December and peaks in the spring and

the fall. This pattern has not changed in recent years. Suicide is a public health problem that occurs throughout the year.

The holiday suicide myth is just one example of misinformation about suicide.

Another myth is the idea that talking about suicide might plant the idea and increase the risk. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, asking directly about suicide is the best way to send the message that we are concerned and to encourage the person to accept help.

We have all heard the myth that we can’t stop someone from killing themselves once they’ve made up their mind.

Suicide attempt survivors tell us that many people who

think about suicide struggle with this decision and are open to other ways to manage their emotional pain. So, when we know someone is at risk for suicide we should stay actively involved with the person and get others involved so we are sending a persistent message of caring and hope.

The Necessity of a Power of Attorney for Healthcare for Today’s Families By: Attorney Kani Harvey Hightower In the olden days, families typically consisted of a dad, a mom, and their children. It was presumed that mom and dad would take care of each other, with their adult children as back-up. No one usually complained.

However, times are different. Today, many people are divorced and/or remarried. Many are single parents and blended families. Although we still have “traditional” families, the new normal is often a dad, a mom, his children, her children, and their children. Not only are there more people to complain, these situations have made it difficult for healthcare providers to determine who should assist a patient with healthcare decisions because there are “too many chefs in the kitchen.”

We also now have to contend with the privacy guidelines under HIPAA (the 1996 Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), effective for most providers by 2003. HIPAA essentially restricts providers from discussing a patient’s healthcare issues with a third party, unless the patient or a court has provided authorization to do so, such as a power of attorney or court order.

Unfortunately, sometimes a loved one has to step in when a patient is unconscious or physically or mentally incapacitated, and it is often too late for the patient to provide such authorization.

Although, at times, a health care provider may speak to a family member without such approval,

this can become problematic. If the loved one does not agree with the provider, the relationship can deteriorate quickly, leaving no legal requirement for the provider to discuss anything with that person. However, a power of attorney for healthcare (POAHC) changes everything.

A POAHC essentially opens the “privacy door” to allow a designated person to assist the patient with healthcare decisions, such as scheduling appointments, finding out results, or choosing a different facility. More importantly, a POAHC does not stop the patient from making his or her own decisions, nor can the designated person override the patient’s wishes. A POAHC merely establishes a loved one who can legally assist the patient with certain healthcare needs, so the patient’s choice is clear to providers, regardless of the patient’s familial structure.

Having a POAHC can be useful to both traditional and non-traditional families by making sure healthcare providers know with whom they can discuss a patient’s issues. A POAHC is vital for a blended family or divorced or widowed patients, as providers need to know who can assist in the patient’s healthcare decisions since the family structure is not as traditional. Essentially, everyone should consult an attorney and create a POAHC to ensure that they designate a loved one to assist with their healthcare needs, when necessary.

The meatloaf recipe you loved no one else enjoyed…the person you trusted with your secret shares it…the job you hoped for and worked so hard to get is awarded to someone else…the marriage you anticipated “until death do we part” painfully ends… the baby inside your womb you longed to hold is stillborn. All these are real life scenarios of disappointment. Everyone has experienced the devastation of disappointment. Even children suffer the aftermath of anguish disappointment brings.

Disappointment is a heart emotion felt when the fulfillment of an expected outcome, dream, or deep desire is not achieved.

Disappointment hurts and has the potential to change the hues of life from bright and sunny to cloudy and gray. Disappointment can foster cynicism, apathy, and even deep depression. The holiday season can bring on lots of disappointment. Family gatherings hoped to happily occur will never happen. Financial

needs expected to be fulfilled will never be met. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire with lovers passionately kissing under the mistletoe may only manifest as mere words from a traditional Christmas song rather than a true reality, and many children will not get that coveted Christmas gift under the tree. Try as we might to avoid disappointment, often it will be the uninvited intruder interrupting our lives shamelessly.

Unfortunately, a great part of this year has been plagued with disappointment for me. I’m sure those unhappy with the outcome of this year’s presidential election can relate to the distress. At times the assault upon my heart has been close to unbearable forcing me to make changes in my thinking. If I am to thrive in a world consisting of inevitable disappointments, I must accept that reality in a way that brings new meaning. Many dreams hoped to materialize for me in 2012 will not. I must accept and grieve the disappointment of unfulfilled dreams. My life in many ways has not progressed as desired and, seemingly, there have been more losses than gains.

Disappointment can, therefore, make one retreat in ultimate defeat or settle in with mediocrity.

I’ve learned however, giving way to this attitude only places us within a mode of living devoid of passion and adventure, reducing our lives to merely existing rather than having the abundant life Jesus desired for us (John 10:10).

teaches, an inherent treasure is discovered. The treasure may not be immediately apparent but assuredly is there. The soul is awakened to this discovery cherished by a heart that has remained open to goodness and vulnerable to receive goodness regardless of disappointments.

In time, an emerging new reality will begin to bud from any disappointment…slowly blossoming then eventually giving way to full bloomed goodness and beauty so captivating the ashes of disappointment will be swept swiftly away. Embracing this new reality as the gift it is

ultimately meant to be will be dependent upon the openness of the heart. A heart hardened by disappointments will forfeit the gift devaluing its treasure. Within each of us is the power to accept the inevitable disappointments produced in life by an imperfect world full of imperfect people in a way that makes us bitter or better. This is what I perceive as true.

Who Is Hammond Movers?

By A. Anter As much as I say “I am never moving again!” life seems to always have a different plan.

So, when August rolled around and I realized that I was in fact moving again, there was no doubt that Hammond Movers was who I would call. Two years ago, under very difficult and emotional circumstances, Hammond Movers moved me.

It was just one month after my Mom had passed away. I honestly don’t remember much from that move, except that it was stress free. Life wasn’t. So, I appreciated that the move was.

In August, I decided I was ready to simplify my life a bit and “clean things up”, to let go of so many things I hadn’t been

willing to let go of until now.

I decided to down-size and I called Lenora at Hammond Movers. She not only remembered me, but spoke to me as if she were speaking with a friend.

We discussed the details of my September move and scheduled a date. That date crept up faster than I expected it to and I was in my usual “moving day panic” when Dave arrived. He and I talked about the day and how I was hoping things would go. Dave assured me that they would make sure things went just as I requested. Keith got there next and the two were my team for the day.

For the entire move, they smiled, joked and kept on moving. Most of all, they put my mind at ease. They just handled things. As the day progressed,

I noticed they were taking such care in handling my belongings. I could hear them outside talking and making sure everything was arranged properly in the truck. When it came time to unload, they unloaded the truck with the same care and professionalism as they loaded it with. They arranged and rearranged heavy furniture and boxes. They even helped me set up shelves. Dave suggested we unload at my apartment garage first so I wouldn’t have to lug things back up there the next day. I was thrilled that they were willing to do this for me.

But, when we got to the garage, the door lock was broken and we couldn’t get in. There was no choice. Everything had to go in my apartment. Exhausted, and pretty much ready to

fall over, I told myself it was “no big deal” and at the same time, I was trying to figure out how on earth I was going to do this myself. At the end of the day, as Dave and Keith finished and I thanked them, Dave said he was not happy leaving the items I wanted in the garage in my apartment. He told me to get the garage squared away and they would come back with the truck and haul it up there for me. What?? Really?? And two

days later, when my apartment complex had a garage ready for me, that is exactly what they did. I was so surprised and truly so very thankful.

DETECTIVE STABLER Detective Stabler was abandoned under a bridge in Cleveland along with six other turkeys and 14 chickens.

Natasha the goat was abandoned on the side of a Summit County road when she was only a day and a half old.

Sergeant Pepper was dumped in a Giant Eagle parking lot in Canal Fulton.

Frolic, along with her goat friend, Pickwick, was discovered abandoned in Akron. Willow the pig was left on her own to die in the woods near Worthington. The list goes on.
