Mountain Disaster Preparedness is a nonprofit organization of trained volunteers who serve the communities of Pine Cove, Idyllwild and Mountain Center. Escondido Oceanside We have no paid personnel and rely on public tax-deductible ROADS MAIN contributions for our operations and equipping our nine Disaster Assistance To Stations, which are strategically located throughout the community. Living in Idyllwild Essentials to know … Utility hookup: Electricity is with Edison, 1-800-6554555 or Anza Electric Cooperative (Garner Valley) 951-763-4333. Propane is available through several vendors: AC Propane, 951-845-8800; Advantage Propane, 951-927-8000; AmeriGas, 951-296-3118; Ferrellgas, 951-659-4085; SoCal Propane, 951-7918686; Suburban Propane 951-659-2642. Water service depends on where you live: Fern Valley residents call Fern Valley Water District, 951-659-2200; Idyllwild residents call Idyllwild Water District, 951-659-2143; Pine Cove residents call Pine Cove Water District, 951659-2675; Garner Valley and Lake Hemet customers call Lake Hemet Municipal Water District, 951-6583241; Twin Pines/Poppet Flats residents call High Valleys Water District, 951-849-2612 and Pinyon Pines residents call 760-349-3261 or 951-468-4054. How do I get mail? Idyllwild, Pine Cove and Mountain Center residents receive mail in post office boxes only. To get a box, take a utility bill or something that shows your local residence address to your nearest post office. Idyllwild Post Office is located in the Strawberry Creek Plaza off Village Center Drive. Pine Cove residents receive mail at the Idyllwild Post Office. The Mountain Center Post Office is at the intersection of highways 243 and 74. If you live in Garner Valley, you can get mail delivered by postal route. Visit the Mountain Center Post Office for more information. DHL, FedEx, OnTrac and UPS all deliver and pick up on the Hill. Their phone numbers are: DHL, 1-800225-5345, FedEx, 1-800-463-3339, OnTrac, 1-800334-5000 and UPS, 1-800-742-5877. Trash: Private businesses and CC&R, 1-800-7558112, will haul your trash. Most people haul their own to the Idyllwild Transfer Station (“The Dump”) on Saunders Meadow Road. Recycling is encouraged there and large bins are available. No presorting required. Just dump the glass with the paper. Bins also are available for bulky items and an area is set aside for dumping vegetation matter (pine needles, leaves, branches). The transfer station also accepts computers and other electronic equipment. The Dump is closed Tuesday and Wednesday and some holidays. Hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Newspaper delivery: The weekly Idyllwild Town Crier is in stores throughout town every Wednesday morning (unless Monday is a holiday, then delivery is Thursday).

Neither the Riverside Press-Enterprise nor the Los Angeles Times offers home delivery, but both papers are available in some local stores. Where are the main stores? Village Market is located on Highway 243 near North Circle Drive. Village Hardware is located right next door. Fairway Market and Idyllwild Pharmacy are in the Strawberry Creek Plaza off Village Center Drive. Forest Lumber is on Lower Pine Crest Avenue. Pick up an Explore Idyllwild Directory and Map for more on local shopping. Off-Hill shopping is about 45 minutes away in Hemet or Banning, and about an hour away in Palm Desert. These cities have large chain stores. Driver and vehicle licenses: Department of Motor Vehicles, 1200 S. State St., Hemet, 1-800-777-0133 or 1034 West Ramsey St., Banning, or log on to www.dmv.ca.gov. Registering to vote: Voter registration forms are available at the Idyllwild and Mountain Center post offices and Idyllwild Library, by calling the Riverside County Registrar of Voters 951-486-7200 or online (www.sos. ca.gov/elections_vr.html). Idyllwild residents vote at Town Hall on Cedar Street. Pine Cove residents vote at the Pine Cove Water District on Marion Ridge Drive. Other Hill communities vote by mail. Peculiarities... Locals call the area “the Hill.” The local post office is where people hang out and where service organizations set up card tables to sell event tickets and other fundraising items. Idyllwild has about 75 volunteer/service organizations, one for every 46 residents. There are three water districts serving the Hill. Every few years, efforts to combine the water districts, incorporate the town or install a traffic light are defeated. The only “chain” businesses are the gas stations, propane companies, BBVA Compass and Napa Auto Parts; otherwise, the stores are mom-and-pop outfits. Strawberry Creek Plaza’s parking lot is a one-way, counterclockwise loop. Newcomers usually learn this navigational peculiarity the hard way. Idyllwild Arts Academy presents professional-level concerts, dances, films and art shows, mostly free, by talented students from all over the world. As of 2013, Idyllwild no longer has a Chamber of Commerce. Continued on next page

Surviving … Crime: For emergencies, call 911. For nonemergencies, call Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department, 1-800-950-2444 or 951-776-1099. Disaster aid: In case of a disaster, Hill residents needing help should go to their designated Disaster Assistance Station (see map on pages 2–3). Mountain Disaster Preparedness volunteers operate these stations. Emergency information: In an emergency, such as a wildfire, the Town Crier newspaper gives updates on its website (www.towncrier.com) or social media pages. Radio station WNKI – 1610AM gives updates on conditions during an emergency. Riverside County has an e-alert subscription service that notifies subscribers of emergency situations. Visit www.rivco-ealert.com for more information. Fire: Call 911 to report smoke or fire. Road conditions: Call Caltrans Highway Information Line at 1-800-427-7623 or visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov. Power outages: Call SCE at 1-800-655-4555. Snow: In winter, passing storms dump tons of snow on Idyllwild, sometimes causing panic among the unprepared. Be prepared to have to shovel snow berms that snowplows create from your driveway or around your vehicle.

Important items to have on hand... A plan for family members to reunite if telephone service is not available. Flashlights and portable radio with spare batteries. Corded telephone that does not require electric power service to operate (“land line”). First aid kit and instructional handbook. Fire extinguishers. Food (canned, dry or dehydrated) for a week to 10 days for all members of the family (including those with special dietary needs). Don’t forget household pets. Water, two quarts per day per person. Water heater and toilet tank (not bowl) can be used as emergency sources. Alternative cooking source, such as a barbecue grill or outdoor stove, with appropriate fuel. Matches, kept in a watertight container. Alternative heat source, such as a wood-burning stove or

fireplace, that does not rely on electricity or gas service. Tools, such as a pipe wrench and crescent wrench for turning off gas and water mains. Supplies for hygiene and sanitation, such as plastic bags, premoistened towelettes, toilet paper and soap, and chlorine bleach. Heavy shoes, warm clothing, blankets and work gloves for each member of the household. Alternative housing such as a tent, sleeping bags, etc.

Who runs the town? Idyllwild-area communities are unincorporated. The main local level of government is Riverside County. Idyllwild is in the third district of the county. Third district county supervisor is Chuck Washington. Idyllwild-area communities have seven water districts and a fire district, all with five-member boards, that are separate from the county government. Within and surrounding Idyllwild are county, state and federal lands. The largest area — the San Bernardino National Forest — is run by the U.S. Forest Service. The honorary mayor is a golden retriever named Max.

Barbecue permits: Idyllwild Fire Department requires residents to have a permit for barbecues on private property that are good for one year. One-day permits are required for fire rings in Idyllwild. The permits are free and available at the station. Riverside County Fire, which covers Pine Cove, Mountain Center and Garner Valley, does not have barbecue regulations. Parks: Idyllwild County Park off of Lower Pine Crest Avenue has picnic tables, as does the Idyllwild Nature Center and Mt. San Jacinto State Park, both north of Idyllwild off of Highway 243. They all have fees. The Idyllwild Area Historical Society on North Circle Drive has picnic tables for free use. The county park has many hiking trails. Most hiking trails are in wilderness areas and require a free permit. Visit the Idyllwild Ranger Station at the corner of Highway 243 and Pine Crest Avenue, or Mt. San Jacinto State Park for permits. The Richard Barker Dog Park, Idyllwild Skate Park and Pickleball Courts are located on Idyllwild Pines Camp property along Highway 243 near Strawberry Creek Bridge. Lake Hemet has recreational swimming in the summer.

MAST Mountain Area Safety Taskforce MAST is a coalition of local, state and federal government agencies, private companies and volunteer organizations in San Bernardino and Riverside counties working together to prevent catastrophic wildfires. IIFC Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema Idyllwild’s annual film festival that occurs throughout town during two weeks in March. IMC Idyllwild Master Chorale A group of volunteer singers who perform throughout the year. MCFSC Mountain Communities Fire Safe Council A group of volunteers who primarily educate the local public about fire abatement practices that can save their homes. MDP Mountain Disaster Preparedness A group of volunteers trained in emergency response, disaster assessment and disaster aid.

MHRC Mile High Radio Club An opportunity for licensed amateur radio operators to meet and exchange knowledge and experience.

PCPOA Pine Cove Property Owners Association A membership association for any property owner or renter in the Pine Cove area. PEO Philanthropic Educational Organization PEO is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College, and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations. RMRU Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit Trained volunteers in mountain rescues, working under the auspices of the Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department. SJMCC

San Jacinto Mountain Community Center A private, nonprofit organization (dba Idyllwild Community Center or ICC) established in 1999 with a board of directors working to build and maintain a community center and amphitheater for the Hill communities as well as provide vibrant recreational, cultural and social opportunities for all ages at multiple locations in the beautiful village of Idyllwild. ICC includes the Building Capital Campaign (BCC) committee, which helps with various fundraising endeavors. WNKI – 1610AM Local Information Broadcast The call letters for our local emergency radio station at 1610 AM. During emergencies, volunteers update the broadcast content after receiving verified and vetted information from the appropriate authorities. Descriptions of local points of interest along with other details may be provided during non-emergencies. Mile High Radio Club manages WNKI through an agreement between the club and the Idyllwild Fire Protection District since 2014.

PAST… The Mountain Communities Fire Safe Council (MCFSC), a nonprofit public benefit corporation. The council was formed by residents of the hill community during the Summer of 2001 and was organized for the sole purpose of educating local Hill community residents about fire safety concerns related to the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI).

PRESENT… Now decades later the mission of MCFSC has evolved greatly to encompass various forest health and wildfire safe projects. These projects are funded through government agencies. The MCFSC leads and maintains an array of forest health and wildfire mitigation projects such as beetle infestation management and studies, fuels reduction, and defensible space fire abatement strategies as it relates to code PRC 4291. The MCFSC collaborates with mountain community residents and local contractors under a cost share basis. FUTURE… We are and will continue to be Southern California’s mountain communities’ frontrunner in wildfire risk, fuels reduction, education, safety and forest health conservation management.
