Additional Programs and Fees at Summit School
Beforeschool and Afterschool Program Summit Afterschool strives to engage the whole child with a carefully designed schedule that gives students plenty of time to create, play, move and learn. Experienced staff members supervise all programs and diligently oversee the safety and well being of each child. Students have the chance to experience school with a little less structure and enjoy an extra dose of hands-on indoor/outdoor activities. There is built-in homework time for older students and opportunities for each child to explore and develop his or her own interests. Parents and students can choose from a variety of program options to create the ideal schedule. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Summit Afterschool Director Janice Weiss at jweiss@summitmail.org or 336-722-2127. Beforeschool 7 to 8 am (JrK to 9th Grade) This program is designed to give students a positive start to the school day. The instructor is sensitive to the individual needs of children as they make an early transition from home to school. The program in ASP1 (Afterschool Program Room 1) is a relaxing place to make new friends or catch up on homework. Some children bring a simple breakfast, while others participate in art projects or board games. Students are dismissed to their classrooms at 8 am.
JrK and Kindergarten Early Afternoon 1:30 to 3 pm Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students start their afternoon in one of our main afterschool rooms, rotating through various indoor activity stations. Children socialize and work together as they build, create, relax and play. This early afternoon program ends with an outdoor playground period on the front playground followed by dismissal at the 3 pm car ferry. Junior Kindergarten students who stay past 3 pm have a rest time on cots during the second half of this program.
Three-Thirty Express 3 to 3:30 pm (1st to 5th Grade) This program is designed for Lower School students who await the Upper School dismissal time. The Three-Thirty Express is a helpful service to parents who prefer one pick-up time for Lower and Upper School students. At 3 pm, children gather in a designated room to relax, socialize or work on homework before heading to the 3:30 pm car ferry.
Lower School Afternoon 3 to 5:45 pm (JrK to 5th Grade) This program begins with children reporting to three different Afterschool locations based on grade level for indoor/outdoor play and snack. Fourth and Fifth Grade students stay together for the entire afternoon with built-in time for homework, indoor/outdoor games and cheering for Summit athletics teams. After the initial playtime and snack, our JrK to 3rd Grade students divide into five multilevel groups for a 45-minute activity time. Our instructors specialize in a variety of topics including art, drama, games, woodworking, and cooking. After the activity time, our younger students (JrK to 1st) enjoy a story, while the 2nd and 3rd Grade students head to the library for homework time. The afternoon ends with more time on the playground or gym. At the end of every week, students enjoy Fun Friday with no
Extended Day Program 3:30 to 5:45 pm (6th to 9th Grade) This is a supervised Afterschool Program for Upper School students (6th to 9th Grade) who are not involved in school-sponsored activities. At dismissal time, students report to the second floor library for check-in and snack. Students have plenty of time to study, socialize, and attend sporting events. This is the perfect place for athletes on seasonal break or students waiting for a late ride home. Students can join this program throughout the afternoon as clubs and sports come to an end. Parents can sign their students out by calling or visiting the main Afterschool room. This is a drop-in only program.
Beforeschool and Afterschool Program Enrollment Summit students with consistent afterschool needs should register for the appropriate afterschool programs. An enrolled student receives a discounted price and follows a fixed yearly schedule that is known to classroom teachers, Afterschool staff and the Business Office. Parents receive information about Afterschool in Early August. Registration through Veracross occurs during a late summer enrollment period. Once the school year begins, enrollment takes place by contacting the Afterschool Director, Janice Weiss at jweiss@summitmail.org or 336-722-2127.

Bus Service Summit School provides convenient and safe transportation to and from the campus. The school maintains a fleet of six regulation school buses, with routes available, based upon demand, to students in all grade levels. Children who use our transportation system are escorted to their bus by their teacher(s) each afternoon, and our drivers ensure that students have entered their residence before pulling away. If a parent or guardian is not present to pick up a student, the child is returned to the campus and placed in afterschool care until a parent arrives to pick them up.
