SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE

ROOTS & REACH At Summit, our focus is Inspiring Learning. As a school, we develop and refine the skills, aptitudes, and dispositions of our educators so they can encourage thinking creatively, reasoning systematically, and working collaboratively.

Summit has a history of embracing technology through the years. The growth of the program, once housed in a closet, demanded space in which to flourish.

STEWARDSHIP All members of the Summit School community are responsible for its long-term interests and financial stability. Current Summit students benefit directly from the investments made in our plant and facilities by generations of families before us, as well as the visionary and bold decisions entrusted to the community by the Board of Trustees. Parents who entered Summit immediately after the 1984 capital campaign started the New Parents’ Capital Campaign. Since 1984, parents new to Summit have contributed more than $2.5 million to increase the school’s capital assets. Rather than limit our capital giving program to new parents, this year we are launching the Roots & Reach Campaign, to encourage all current families to contribute to our state-of-the-art learning facilities.

The Summit ethos has never been simply about buildings. For more than eighty years, the school has placed people and the mission of the school above all else. Historically, the growth of programs led to construction of buildings. Summit’s facilities give our students and teachers the tools needed to achieve these essential skills. They are constructed with the same level of intention and strategy that one sees in our curriculum. These facilities teach and inspire. Our newest facilities, along with talented teachers and a continuing commitment to hands-on learning and creative thinking, inspire students to learn how to learn so their education lasts for a lifetime.

CAMPAIGN GOAL The Roots & Reach Campaign will raise $1 million over the next 10 years.

IMPACT OF PARENTS’ CAPITAL GIVING Careful planning by the Board of Trustees resulted in the most audacious and forward-thinking expansion in Summit’s history. The additions of a 2nd & 3rd Grade Classroom Building, Athletic Center, Dining Hall, and Arts & Technology Building have provided the tools today’s students need to be successful in the rapidly changing world. Dining Hall

Athletic Center

• 3,000+ meals served every week • More than 400 gallons of milk consumed each month • At least 12 fruits and vegetables offered daily

• All school spirit assemblies celebrated • Physical Education classes taught daily • Home to the only school gymnastics team in North Carolina • Awarded LEED for Schools Silver

Arts and Technology Building • 70 lower school student visits daily • 252 radio shows, 83 media projects, 8 television productions, 2 original radio dramas produced this year • Tooth fairy pillows, balloon cars, animations, robots, visual and performing arts, music... designed, explored, and created by all students every year • The Blackbox provides opportunities to explore professional lighting, sound, and technical theatre

1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade Building

Summit’s visionary leadership authorized a bond to expedite construction on these facilities. The chart below shows how philanthropic gifts to the Roots & Reach Campaign will contribute to the overall financial obligation of $17.6 million.

• Flexible rooms used for teaching and learning, exploration, and student art • Student-centric physical space • Skylights and large scale windows for optimal natural light • Three curricular gardens tended by students: Native American, Japanese, and Pioneer

Cash & pledges committed, operations, investment earnings, and deferred gifts All gifts to the Roots & Reach Campaign allow Summit to avoid burdening the operating budget with debt-service expense. Debt service on the school’s tax-exempt bond issue will be a little more than $900,000 in 2015-16, comprised of a $600,000 principal payment and $300,000 in interest and associated fees.

A SUMMIT EDUCATION IS TRULY A GIFT FROM ONE GENER ATION TO THE NEXT

Summit is a strong school today because past families planned and gave to support its growth. To maintain the quality of Summit’s facilities and programs, it is imperative that today’s families make Summit a philanthropic priority.
