As many of you know, tuition covers only a portion of the cost of a Summit education. The remainder is covered through an annual draw from our endowment, as well as gifts to The Summit Fund and other fundraising initiatives. I have been truly inspired by the Summit community’s generosity of time, talent, and treasure. SUMMIT'S NEW PLAYGROUND

A LEARNING LAB DISGUISED AS PLAY

Summit’s new playground is the result of collaborative planning involving students and staff. With a focus on health, safety, and imaginative play, the playground is a testament to Summit’s commitment to learning through play.

Summit, with its 90-year history, has long recognized the importance of play in education. When the pandemic prompted a reevaluation of learning spaces, the 28-acre campus offered ample room for innovative options. Della Hinman, a kindergarten lead teacher, and her team engaged students in the planning process, giving them an opportunity to leave a legacy for their peers.

The planning process began in fall 2021 and involved students of different age groups. They expressed their desires through art, imagining their dream playground. While not every element was feasible, the students’ input shaped the final design. Tree houses, forts, and classic play elements like slides and swings were a priority,

and the second graders emphasized climbing and balancing activities. One of the tree houses features a spiral staircase to challenge students’ balance and motor skills.

To accommodate performances and outdoor teaching, an amphitheater space was incorporated into the playground, complete with seating logs for the audience. Additionally, a “sky hammock,” resembling a giant spider web of rope, provides a communal lounging area.

A generous Summit family provided a $100,000 matching donation which kicked off the fundraising effort. Beanstalk Builders created the outdoor learning space using native North Carolina black locust trees.

The playground’s design promotes collaboration and minimal adult interference while maintaining clear sight lines for teachers to ensure safety. Summit aims to foster wonder, curiosity, and creativity, offering an environment that stimulates imagination and accommodates various play styles. The playground also prioritizes inclusivity, considering accessibility for all students.

Summit’s new playground continues the tradition of valuing play as an essential part of education. It builds upon the legacy of previous playgrounds, such as Fort Tally, and the Dare to Dream project, which engaged the entire community in fundraising and construction efforts.

Summit’s commitment to play-based learning remains strong, recognizing that students explore and understand the world through play. With this new playground, Summit creates a space where students can learn, grow, and enjoy their education in a playful and inclusive environment.

Many thanks to more than three hundred friends of Summit School for generously supporting the “ Party Like it’s 1933!” Gala. Because of the tremendous collective generosity, we raised nearly $400,000 for the school, surpassing our fundraising goal and eclipsing our previous record set in 2021.

This year’s gala which took place on Saturday, March 18, 2023, was a joyous celebration of the 90th anniversary of Summit School. Parent volunteers transformed the Athletic Center into an elegant evening for the “Party Like It’s 1933!” theme. A robust silent and live auction, dinner by FLIK, and dancing to the band Queen Bee and the Honeylovers brought together Summit families, past, present, and future for a remarkable evening.

The enduring success of Summit School is a testament to Louise Futrell and her vision of building a school where “everybody can be a somebody.” Thanks to everyone for the multitude of ways you supported this incredible evening.

Summit’s endowment funds, established in 1959, have grown to more than $16,500,000 and generate $800,000 annually for the operating budget. Gifts to the endowment enable Summit to respond quickly to needs and keep the school innovative.

Summit has the largest per student endowment of NCAIS (North Carolina Association of Independent Schools) schools. The Board’s policy is to spend 5% of a three year rolling average of the value of the endowment for operations.

FUND

ESTABLISHED BY SUMMIT ALUMS TO HONOR A SPECIAL TEACHER

Thanks to the leadership of Alex McKinnon ’78, Richard Brenner ’78, and John Ruffin ’74, a scholarship has been established to honor the legacy of former faculty member, Mr. John Seymour, described as a great teacher, coach, and friend.

Dr. Sandra P. Adams, former head of school, said, “John and I joined the Summit faculty in 1967 as foreign language teachers. I loved watching him connect with students in his Spanish classroom, on the sports fields, and in the hallways. He was a mighty presence wherever he was.”

According to Brenner, “many students were influenced by Mr. Seymour—whether on baseball or soccer teams, on a trip out west or

to El Salvador—or in the classroom and hallways of our beloved Summit School. Alex, John, and I knew that we wanted to honor his legacy.

We met with the Development Office at Summit for guidance and began to contact classmates and alums whose lives were impacted by Señor Seymour.”

McKinnon added, “while we knew how much Mr. Seymour influenced the three of us, we were overwhelmed by the response from others. More than fifty alums from the classes of 19691981 contributed and raised funds to name the scholarship in his honor.”

Ruffin said, “it was a privilege to work with this group and honor this special person.”

In early June, a group of seven alums traveled to Albuquerque, NM to visit Mr. Seymour and his wife Ginger to tell them about the scholarship. The John Seymour Scholarship Fund will award need-based financial assistance in perpetuity to deserving students to attend Summit School.

While he may live far away, Mr. Seymour left a lasting impression on a generation of students and his legacy now has a permanent mark at Summit.

A named annual scholarship meets the immediate financial needs of an individual student or students. Unlike endowed scholarships, an annual scholarship is awarded only as long as the donor chooses to contribute to the fund.
