SPARKING THE FLAME OF LEARNING
THE STORY OF THE MARIAN MILLAWAY DOUGLAS ’69 AWARD FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE MICHAEL EBELING
“Joy has always been a part of Summit, and it always will be. As soon as you come on this campus you see it and feel it everywhere. The walls are covered with what students create. And just walk into a classroom. You can’t help but learn! Truth is, you can’t help but fall in love with learning at Summit. The single biggest variable in students’ academic success is the quality of the classroom teacher. Nowhere is this more passionately expressed than in the gratitude and philanthropy of our alums and their families. It is no accident, then, that alumna, former parent, and current grandparent Marian Millaway Douglas ’69 is the namesake of the Marian Millaway Douglas ’69 Award for Faculty Excellence. Established in 2000 with generous funding from Marian’s husband Jim, former Head of School, Sandra Adams, and close family and friends, this fund--as the endowment reads--was established “to honor Mrs. Douglas for her love of and dedication to Summit and to recognize her parents who made Summit a priority for their daughter. The fund rewards teachers whose

excellence and enthusiasm spark the flame of learning in students.” Deeply involved with Summit since her days as a 4K (now known as Junior Kindergarten) student in 1958, Marian has experienced the excellence and enthusiasm of teachers in a remarkable variety of roles: student, alumna, parent, trustee, chair of the board of trustees, library volunteer, president of the Parents’ Association, co-chair of the Auction, chair of May Frolics, co-chair of Advocates’ Council, and now Summit grandparent. Marian recently reflected on her lifelong relationship with Summit. When asked what she sees as facets of Summit that have held true over her five decades at the school, she responded with her signature warmth, insight and ebullience, naming two qualities that endure:

The quality of the teachers is exceptional. I bet I can remember the name of just about every teacher I had during my eleven years at Summit. Each new year I’d think, ‘This teacher won’t be able to match up to last year’s.’ Yet, every year they did. The same was true for my boys, Sandlin ’94, Dixon ’99, and Wilson ’04. That’s something special about Summit. The teachers care. They know your child. They know each child. And they won’t settle for anything less than your child learning. As a student, I felt that. As a parent, I was so grateful. And as a grandparent, I’m just thrilled that my grandchildren will have this special experience. I tell my sons: No matter where you live, the most important gift you can give your children is an education the quality of Summit.” This is
SEVENTH GR ADE WORLD CULTURES CLASS DESIGNS APP FOR WFU MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY Every fall, Lisa Emmerich tasks her seventh-grade World Cultures students with enhancing a local museum exhibit. Along the way, as one might expect, those students become well-versed in the subject matter and substance of their assigned exhibit through hours of classroom instruction, museum touring, self-guided research, and group study. Emmerich’s students don’t stop there, however. Each year, they go beyond the confines of what is generally expected of middle school students, pushing past expectations and curricular boundaries to produce amazing collaborations which are at once interactive and instructive. This year’s exhibit, located at the Wake Forest University Museum of Anthropology, is entitled “Childhood Around the World.” Students began their project, or “design challenge,” with a “design thinking routine,” which is simply a process by which students seek to solve a problem by following a set of steps of discovery, interpretation, ideation, experimentation, and production. Therefore, they had to define their problem, identify their stakeholders, brainstorm potential solutions, prototype, test, fail, re-prototype, test, and so on. To begin, students became experts on a chosen topic in the exhibit. This entailed observing, researching, and writing an extensive essay. Topics included cuisine, school, games, toys, and clothing.
Hot and heavy into a brainstorming session about how to best engage museum-goers, student Celia Gottlieb proposed building an app that would combine all the elements of the exhibit, and tie together the cultures of the children of five countries around the world. Her class contended that an app could move users seamlessly from one culture and its subtopics to the next. Emmerich reminisces, “When they asked if they could create an app, I said I didn’t know how to do that, so did they think they could figure it out. They said ‘sure, no problem.’” That is where Jonathan Spencer, Digital Media teacher, came in. Spencer was teaching a seventhgrade digital media class at the time, as well. When Emmerich’s students went to him asking if he would teach them to build an app for a World Cultures class he was excited. “Of their own accord, the seventhgraders came together and made the connection with the content and the available technology to make the app. I was teaching App/Kiosk Design in a completely separate class, and the students just put two and two together,” says Spencer.
The end product was World Kidz, a web app designed for secondgraders showcasing a day in the life of children around the world. Users can click from country to country and see how a child spends his or her day, what food they eat, what games they play, what clothes they wear, and how their school day looks. Says Emmerich, “I was blown away by this class. I think what made them so successful was the degree to which they were self-guided. We all learned above and beyond what I thought we would. Even I know how to design an app now.” Spencer adds, “I think the students derived a true sense of accomplishment and created a multi-level project that expands the prototypical singular focus found in most classrooms.” Because of the continued support of our donors, Summit is able to sustain its rich tradition of delving deep into experiential learning. We are able to continue to root our students to a sturdy knowledge base, while encouraging them to take wing with their own unlimited imaginations. Thank you for allowing our students to soar!

“I also love that Summit has stayed true to its mission while remaining current with and relevant to the times. Summit thrives because it understands what it wants to accomplish, and the work done here is delivered in such a way that all feel valued and feel they add value.” As a parent, Betty says she and Jack certainly had to make some sacrifices early in their marriage to send their three children to Summit, but they felt those sacrifices would not be in vain in the long run. “With our children now grown, it is easy to see that we made the right decision. Jack, Betsy, and Jim all did well in high school, and I am the proud parent of three Duke University graduates. They are successful in their professional lives and their personal lives, as well. That doesn’t happen by accident. Summit reinforced a set of values that we, as parents, held dear. Summit gave them the tools they needed to continue their education. Jack and I have always been grateful to Summit for the firm foundation it provided during the critical years of their childhood.”
SUTTON FAMILY PLANS FOR ENDURING LEGACY When long-time Summit parent, grandparent, and staff member Betty Sutton and her husband, Jack, began their estate planning in 2003, they established a Charitable Remainder Unitrust at the WinstonSalem Foundation. This trust was designated to benefit various local organizations dear to them. At the top of the list was Summit School, for which they allocated funds to be added to Summit’s general endowment. By including Summit in their charitable planning, they joined the Patrons for Tomorrow Planned Giving Society, a society open to anyone who wishes to leave a legacy for Summit School. The Jack and Betty Sutton Family Fund, and

others like it, will ensure that Summit is able to continue educating students who are deep-thinkers, fully-engaged lifelong learners, and good people.
With Betty’s three children and four of her seven grandchildren all Summit graduates, her family has been a part of the Summit community for more than 100 years.
But Betty Sutton has been giving to Summit School since much earlier than 2003. A staff member for 52 years, she has been an enduring, ever-present part of the Summit landscape for generations of students. Her impact on the community has been felt from the halls of the junior kindergarten building to the ninth-grade lounge. She has worked with Heads of School Louise Futrell, Doug Lewis, Sandra Adams, and Michael Ebeling.
When asked about her most inspiring moments here, she remarks, “All my days at Summit have been interesting and different. If I had to pick one thing that gave me the most satisfaction, it would be starting the keyboarding program with the Explorer children and growing it into a full-time program for children in the middle grades. Summit was always ahead of its time in using technology to aid students with learning differences.” She adds,

It was in this spirit of appreciation that Betty and Jack made their gift to Summit’s Patrons for Tomorrow. Says Betty, “It is nice to know that when we are no longer around, this fund will continue to support Summit.” The deeply-rooted legacy and contributions of Betty Sutton and her entire family will, indeed, endure at Summit for generations to come.

During the 2015-16 school year, the Alumni Council continued its efforts to engage alums and hosted an ‘after hours’ event at SECCA. To help alums stay more informed, three e-newsletters were published, and more than 100 alum records were updated with current mailing address or e-mail address changes; we can now deliver our message to more people!
communicate with all constituents – especially with alums. In addition to mailing Annual Fund appeals, two online giving opportunities were created - #GivingTuesday and a Super Bowl challenge. The results speak for themselves and demonstrate that Summit alums are proud of their alma mater. Total dollars raised by alums was more than $151,000!

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide about four percent of the school’s operating budget each year. These unrestricted gifts help meet immediate needs, develop relevant new programs, and sustain the vitality of students’ academic experience. Response from alums is extremely gratifying because it indicates a Summit education is valued long after graduation.

The 9th Grade Philanthropy Project, made possible by a generous grant from the Lovett Foundation, provided an important opportunity for leadership development. The foundation was established in 1992 by Charlie Lovett, a member of Summit’s class of 1977 and former staff member. Lovett has written over 11 books, including Onward & Upward: A History of Summit School. Throughout this philanthropy project, students studied the issues and needs in the greater community, evaluated worthy causes and proposals, reached a consensus, and explored how decisions impact others.
students chose to support Project Pearl. They presented the check to the executive director of Project Pearl at a breakfast welcoming the class to the Summit alumni family. Also, the week prior to graduation, every student of the 9th grade class collaborated to build a platform deck in the Farm Yard off the Lewis Science Center. Designed as an outdoor classroom space with Trex (a manufactured, recycled,
long-lasting material), the deck will serve future generations of students. Along with volunteering hours of time, each student made a donation to the school to assist in covering the cost of the materials. We are extremely grateful to the graduating Class of 2016 for its stewardship and for setting an example for the entire Summit community to follow.
The conclusion of the project included a $2,500 grant to a local nonprofit organization selected by the Class of 2016. Ultimately, the

JOE PARRISH, JR. SPORTS FUND - 1985 Established by the Summit Board of Trustees in memory of Joe Parrish, Jr., parent and board member. The fund celebrates Joe’s joyful spirit, energy and enthusiasm in his love of sports, and provides support of the physical education and sports programs.
LOUISE FUTRELL FUND - 1990 Established with a bequest from Miss Futrell, Summit’s founder, to continue her work with children with specific learning differences.
KATE SANDRIDGE SINK ’53 FUND - 1995 Established by bequest from Kate S. Sink, Summit alumna and parent, for general support of Summit’s programs.
THOMAS A. GRAY ’63 ENDOWMENT - 2008 Established by Mr. Gray, this fund’s income is used at the discretion of the Head of School.
