A Message from the Head of School

discipline

Curiosity is the basic fuel of learning. At Summit, we don’t waste it and we don’t squelch it—we leverage it. We inspire the passion and develop the discipline in our students to create without a template, to search out reliable sources, to think critically and to take meaningful action without a script. In short, we teach learning and we ignite intellectual independence. The philanthropy of Summit supporters makes this possible. What does Summit give to children that is essential, unique and enduring? How do we prepare our students for a future we can scarcely imagine, much less predict? What can we promise to our families about the difference we make in each child’s life? The answer to all of these questions is the same: Inspiring Learning.

Founded 1933

A Message from the Head of School continued At Summit, inspiring learning happens not just in the classroom, but on the sidewalk, in the dining hall, on the athletic field, in the studio, on the stage and in the in between moments and space that our extraordinary faculty and facility capture. Summit students are surrounded by exceptional educators who understand a simple fact: knowledge that is earned is the most enduring. We never underestimate a child. Our students become leaders and innovators who embrace the present and who will shape the future—with competence, confidence, joy and vision. Over the past year, our students have engaged in myriad forms of inspiring learning—all of which are made possible through the philanthropy of alums, current and past parents, grandparents, current and former staff, community members and friends of the school. These experiences are typical of “a day in the life” of a Summit student: • Upper School Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) students creating a sustainable hydroponic gardening system that supplies lettuce to the dining hall • Early Childhood students, in their study of penguins in Antarctica, researching the effects of oil spills on the environment and methods for clean up through classroom experiments • Lower School students exploring the culture, geography, wildlife and people of Australia through the hands on experience of a trip to Wake Forest University’s Anthropology Museum • Triad Academy students discovering in their Tarheel Club the architecture of Winston-Salem through a presentation by a local architect including a focus on the rebuilding of Graylyn after the devastating 1980 fire • 9th graders engaging in their Leadership Summit work with a tour of Winston-Salem which included observation of two courtrooms (and conversations with 2 Summit alum judges), a tour of Wake Forest University’s BioTech Place (featuring a talk by a current Summit parent on his research of the adnovirus) and a tour of galleries and performance spaces • Implementation of Responsive Classroom, a research based and empirically tested approach to social emotional learning that increases academic achievement, improves social skills and leads to more high quality instruction while developing a sense of community

the Southeast. Anybody can teach these kids two and two is four. But the nurturing, the love of learning, the emphasis on being a complete person, singing in front of the class, giving speeches, doing internships... the experience at Summit was so wellrounded. It’s the best money I’ve ever spent.” Thank you for all that you do to make possible 80 years of such stories. Your investment in Summit creates a lifetime of learning for our students, engaging them in the present and preparing them for the future. You are part of Summit’s legacy and Summit’s future. With gratitude,

Michael Ebeling Head of School

Family Profile

Edie Murphy Junior Kindergarten at Summit. Murphy stuck around, waiting for the inevitable tears, but they never came. William and Henry, fraternal twins who look alike, sat down to play in separate groups.

Edie Murphy still remembers the day in 1997 that she entered Summit School’s main building for the first time while on a tour of local schools for her twins, Henry and William, class of 2008. “The minute I walked in there, I felt so at home,” she said. “There was artwork everywhere. Everything seemed to be geared to the children. It was like a big family.” Seeing Summit took Murphy back to her own childhood, when she attended an independent school in Shreveport, LA. Now, having seen both of her boys graduate and go on to successful high school careers, Murphy wants to include the school in her estate plans with an unrestricted gift.

William is now a business major at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he plays baseball and Henry is majoring in construction management at East Carolina University. Getting a good start in school is so important, that if she had to choose, Murphy said she would rather have her children attend independent secondary school and a public college or university than attend public secondary schools and an independent college or university. Schools like Summit build confidence and self esteem, she said. “Life is hard. If a child is unsure or not confident, he or she is going to have a hard time,” she said. “If you can’t make a speech, you’re not going to get the promotion.”

“These schools struggle,” she said of independent schools. “To do what they do for these kids does not come free. Tuition does not cover it.”

She is happy to think about her gift going to make a Summit education possible for a child who might not have been able to afford it, or to have it go toward keeping the school’s special character for the next generation.

She had worried that her twins, who had never spent a day apart since they were born, would cry on their first day of

“Summit finds the things you like doing,” she said, “and they help you do it, whether it’s pottery or science.”

Drew Cannon ’91 & Nancy & Tom Cannon “This is a way for new parents to push Summit forward,” he said. “We get to take advantage of the great faculty and atmosphere for the next ten years.” Drew’s mother, Nancy Cannon, said that she has seen changes in the school, but its essence remains the same.

“People are really dedicated and thankful for what happens there every single day with every single child,” she said. “It’s a lifelong learning experience. As our children have become adults, they can Last June when his son, Lem ’23, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, one of the first calls Drew Cannon ’91 made was to Summit School. Drew and his wife, Sara, knew that Lem would need a lot of attention. Summit not only had a nurse on staff, but a community that was dedicated to supporting each child. “All of Lem’s teachers met with us,” he said. “They made us feel very comfortable that Lem would be watched over and taken care of.” When Drew was invited to join the 2012–13 New Parents’ Capital Capital Campaign committee, he didn’t hesitate to get involved. Though Lem was new to Summit, Drew’s ties reached back to his own days there, as well as those of his two sisters, Claire Cannon Lipman ’92 and Rachel Cannon–Percival ’88. In fact, Drew’s parents, Nancy and Tom Cannon, chaired the grandparent campaign for the 2012-13 Annual Fund. Seeing the improvements on campus in the 20 years since he’s been gone and seeing how well taken care of Lem has been, made Drew want to give back to the school that has given him so much.

still reach back to the joy they had. They have such wonderful memories of the school.” All three of her children were different, Nancy said, but each child was able to develop his or her interests and talents at Summit, sometimes in unexpected ways. When Drew broke his ankle during the last football game of the season in Seventh Grade, someone at the school brought him a ukelele to play. That led to Drew’s learning to play guitar, a choice that fueled a musical career for a few years after college, Nancy said. Now watching her grandson, Lem, experience Summit, it is easy to share her family’s story with others. “While Lem was giving me a tour of Summit during Special Persons’ Day in the spring,” Nancy said, “he looked up and said, ‘Nan, don’t you wish you were a kid and could come to school here? This is a great place.’ “That says it all as far as Tom and I are concerned.”

ANNUAL FUND VOLUNTEERS 2012-2013

ALUM ANNUAL FUND Because of you, we inspire intellectual independence

Elizabeth and Bill ’93 Hollan Co-Chairs

Every day, Summit’s world-class faculty brings the highest level of expertise in their field, a well-honed sense of what each child needs, and a deep personal capacity for inspiring learning.

GRANDPARENT DIVISION CHAIRS Nancy and Tom Cannon

The Perry family, Cliff ’59, Ford ’89, Annie Sager ’93, and Beth Skorich ’86 invited alums to help us support the educators who inspire intellectual independence and you responded. The results speak for themselves and demonstrate that Summit alums are proud of this educational institution. The average gift from alums was $233.

ALUM DIVISION CHAIRS Cliff Perry ’59 Beth Perry Skorich ’86 Ford Perry ’89 Annie Perry Sager ’93

Gifts to the Annual Fund provide about four percent of the school’s operating budget each year. These unrestricted gifts help meet immediate needs, develop relevant new programs and sustain the vitality of students’ academic experience. Response from alums is extremely gratifying because it indicates a Summit education is valued long after graduation.

PAST PARENT CHAIRS Sue and Doug Henderson

In addition, alum donations support the financial aid program. The Alumni Scholarship Fund was founded in 1997 with a challenge from the Lovett Foundation. It provides aid to students with demonstrated financial need. To date, alum dollars assist nearly two students per year. If you are interested in helping with alumni fundraising, please contact Sarah Dalrymple at sarahd@summitmail.org or by calling 336-724-5811. Be sure to visit www.summitschool.com and log on to the Alumni Portal so that you can read up-to-date class notes and find email addresses of classmates. Stay in touch and share college information, honors, new addresses, weddings, births, career changes, etc.

Thank you for continuing to show your support of Summit!

Alum Profile

Benjamin Carson ’10 His appreciation for the many opportunities he enjoyed at Summit led Carson to make an unusual decision for someone so young. He began donating to the Annual Fund in 2010-11. Carson’s parents have been giving to the school annually and after graduation, his mother suggested that he begin giving back to the school, even if he didn’t give a lot at this point in his life.

“At first I was hesitant to do it,” he said. “I was saving for college, but I felt like it was really the right thing to do.” In the fall, Carson will enter Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, where he intends to major in biology. He is considering becoming a doctor. He credits his interests in math and science to his early experiences at Summit, where he enjoyed biology and earth science. Carson looks back with gratitude to his Second Grade Teacher, Jan Standerfer, and his Third Grade teacher, Mary Johnson, for helping to keep him on track. As a student, Benjamin Carson ’10, relished the many opportunities that Summit provided. He was able to participate in the band and school plays, as well as football, lacrosse and indoor track. “I enjoyed Summit a lot,” he said. “It allowed you to do a lot of different things and didn’t make you choose one topic.” When Carson graduated from Summit and entered the public school system, he realized he would have to make choices that hadn’t been required of him at Summit. He decided to play sports in school and leave acting as an outside of school interest.

“They understood me,” he said. “When I was younger, once I got my work done, I could have disrupted others. They took the time to help me find other things to do.” His younger brother, Nathaniel, is in Fifth Grade at Summit. Carson is watching him discover his own passions in art, pottery, theater and band. This provides him with another incentive to give. “You want the kids that go through school to have the same experiences you did,” he said, “because you know people that have gone through school before you did that same thing for you.”

New Parents’ Capital Campaign When asked to chair the 2012-13 New Parents’ Capital Campaign, Greg Hunter said, “Ginny and I have been incredibly pleased with the entire Summit experience. Each of our three boys has flourished at Summit, the depth of resources has proven to be amazing and the forward-thinking nature of the leadership is inspiring. We are honored to have any chance to serve and give to this valuable part of our family’s life.” Hunter contacted Joe Andrews who also readily agreed to help. Joe adds, “At the end of the day, there are really only two things you can give your children: love and a good education. It is through this lens that I immediately welcomed the opportunity to be involved with the New Parents’ Capital Campaign. The education of our children is not a spectator sport. I would like to sincerely thank our volunteers and the families that generously contributed to the future of our children through Summit School.” Hunter and Andrews’ efforts paid off - $84,300 was raised and brings the Learning That Lasts Forever Campaign total to $11.3 million.

Parents’ Association Auction Celebrating 80 Years of Magic!

The Parents’ Association biennial auction, Celebrating 80 Years of Magic, chaired by parent volunteers Dana Stallings and Jennifer Hudson (pictured p. 27), was truly a magical evening. Volunteers, corporate donors, grandparents and local businesses contributed generously making the auction a tremendous success, raising $110,000 for Summit. The special night included a performance by Chris Hannibal, a live auction led by auctioneers Kim Bailey and Steve Combes (who are both Summit parents), silent auction and Golden Ticket raffle. The Summit Athletic Center was transformed into an enchanted setting and guests enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner prepared by Flik.

Past Parent Profile

Scott Pope “There was a huge change in her from the beginning of the year to the end,” Pope said. “I saw her get much more self-reliant, more focused on her studies. Mary instilled a love of learning in her that she never really lost.” Pope went on to serve as grade parent and enjoyed the relationships he formed with everyone from the maintenance crew to the Head of School. Today, a sophomore at Forsyth Country Day School, Katie is in Advanced Placement classes, plays three sports and hopes to be accepted at an academically competitive college. And Pope, who recently chaired the past parent campaign for the 2012-13 Annual Fund, is still singing Summit’s praises. “I saw there was a point in Katie’s life where she could have gone the right way or the wrong way with her academics,” he said. “At Summit, the teachers didn’t want to just put in their eight hours and go home. They would go above and beyond to help these kids become better.” Pope worked long hours and often hopped a plane for the day on business, but he never had to worry about Katie being taken care of if he was late to pick her up from school.

When Scott Pope began to worry that his daughter Katie wasn’t paying enough attention to her studies in public school, he enrolled her in Third Grade at Summit School. He wasn’t sure how things would work out. He was a single father with a stressful job. Katie was the youngest in her grade and she was a little shy. The Summit community embraced Pope, as well as his daughter. From the start, Katie’s teacher, Mary Johnson, took Katie under her wing.

“I always knew it wouldn’t be like in a big public school where she would be left sitting on the curb,” he said. “Someone would have taken her home.” When he was asked to serve on the Annual Fund committee, Pope felt a bit timid at first about asking people for money. When he tells his and Katie’s story, his shyness melts. “There’s not a better independent school in the Southeast. Anybody can teach these kids two and two is four,” he said. “But the nurturing, the love of learning, the emphasis on being a complete person, singing in front of the class, giving speeches, doing internships... the experience at Summit was so well rounded. It’s the best money I’ve ever spent.”

Alum Profile

Mike ’63 and Wendy Brenner

For as long as Mike Brenner ’63 can remember, the daily challenges of school were harder and more frustrating for him than most. Although never formally diagnosed with dyslexia, Brenner, a successful businessman and philanthropist, knew that if he could help students with similar learning challenges have an easier time in school than he did, he would like to make that happen. Earlier this year, Mike and his wife, Wendy, made a five year pledge of $100,000 to Triad Academy at Summit School. This annual gift of $20,000 is designated to provide a need-based scholarship for a public school student with dyslexia. Wendy feels fortunate that she had the resources to help her son who also has dyslexia. Because of the early detection and remediation Sam Blumstein ’11 received when he was at Summit, he is taking Advanced Placement and honors classes and looking forward to college. “We know from experience that the Orton-Gillingham approach to learning that Triad Academy so successfully provides makes all the difference,” Wendy said. “Giving this opportunity to bright children who simply need a different approach to learning is a great investment and we feel fortunate that we are able to help.” Both Mike and Wendy Brenner appreciate the importance of giving back to the community. “It would be so difficult to know that your child needs this specialized instruction and that you don’t have the resources to provide it,” Wendy said. “I know the goal at Triad Academy is to help students meet their academic potential by closing the gap between their cognitive ability and achievement. Mike and I know first-hand how important this is and we are gratified to know that we can help make a positive impact in some children’s lives.”

Capital & Endowment Gifts

Bold indicates new donor to the Learning That Lasts Forever Campaign.

Gifts to support capital projects and the endowment come in many ways: unrestricted, named endowments which support an area of particular interest to a donor and by bequest. Summit’s endowment funds, established in 1959, have grown to $16,000,000 and generated $698,000 for the operating budget. During the 2012-2013 school year, new capital and endowment gifts totaled $288,695. These funds provide unrestricted income as well as income designated for specific purposes, including financial aid, curriculum development, faculty enrichments and student travel.

Have You Included Summit in Your Estate Plans? The Patrons for Tomorrow Club was established to recognize those friends who have made provisions for a planned gift to Summit. Planned gifts through a bequest or other ways of giving can help you realize important tax savings while making a significant gift to the school. HERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT SUMMIT AND BECOME A MEMBER OF THE PATRONS FOR TOMORROW CLUB: • A bequest through your will for a fixed amount (cash, stock, real estate) or a percentage of your estate. • A gift naming Summit as beneficiary and/or owner of a new or existing life insurance policy. • A trust or other deferred gift arrangement that can benefit both Summit and your family. With careful planning, your charitable gift may provide steady income for you or a family member, provide income tax deductions, allow you to avoid capital gains taxes on highly appreciated property, and help you reduce estate and gift taxes. To find out more about estate gift opportunities and charitable trusts, please contact Jeanne Sayers, Director of Development, Summit School, 2100 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 (336-724-5811).
