NOSTALGIA NOSTALGIA of Utah Ski Culture
Show up to Alta any day during the winter season and you'll find yourself at the intersection of the greatest snow on earth and the present day personification of nostalgia. Personification of nostalgia , what on earth does that even mean? Let me try to explain. The mullet, the perm and the mustache are having a resurgence you could say and you'll find a little bit of all of it, enhanced by a throwback one piece, at your local mountain resort this winter season. And as funny as this may seem, I kind of dig it. Not because I'm a particular fan of a permed mullet, but because the visual reminds me of something much deeper – something that I think resonates with anyone who at one point in their life has purchased a lift ticket, shared a chairlift or aprèsed by the fire. In one way or another, we're all chasing or trying to embody the cache and vibe of years gone by.

My very first memory in life is my face pressed against the glass of Snowbird's Cliff Lodge watching the lights of the groomers glow against the mountainside. If I close my eyes I can still feel the chill of the cool glass against my four-yearold nose. Much to the joy of my parents, I'd get the rush of excitement around five in the morning – I knew that bomber runs down Chickadee with my Edgie Wedgie, aviator
glasses and pink one-piece were just on the other side of the sunrise. It was those memories that laid the foundation for my present day, and the rest of my life. I got one good look at that tram and decided that while life back home in Georgia was cool, life in Utah was way better (sorry ATL) and my four-year-old self knew the skis, the vibe, the wind, the chapped face and the snow was the life for me.

I'm going to be bold for a moment and say I have the best job in the house. Day-in and day-out I get to be creative, manage Utah's most talented artists and cheer on a group of agents who do a stand-up job for their clients, no matter the ask. I mention my role because I also get to tour, either in person or virtually, homes in all areas, price points and design styles. My job has thankfully brought the life I've thought about since those mornings at Snowbird to fruition, but also, I've become connected to a network of people who have core memories in keeping with mine. I think what struck me as I sat down to concept this issue of Collections Magazine was that whether you're inside a 40 million dollar ski-in/ski-out masterpiece or a fellow "ski-bum's" apartment, the feeling of chasing ski and mountain culture is clear, whether it be on the walls through a poster or the stack of rental skis hanging from a custom ski rack.

50,000 images . That is how many photos, negatives and scans I went through to pick the visual stories and moments you see here. It was tedious, but beyond fun and it taught me a few lessons along the way. I learned that Deseret News hosted ski lessons to thousands, yes thousands, on the snow covered Bonneville Golf course starting in the late 1940's. I discovered photos of what today we'd call "rat rods" dumped sideways in snowy Parley's Canyon, women in skirts and lace up ski boots attached to wooden
skis in line for the chair lift and formal portraits of mountain operators. What I suppose I'm trying to illustrate here is that the images of yesterday aren't too different from those gracing social media profiles today. Of course the fashion, the technology and the size of the industry have changed over time, but the pizza wedge, the crashed-out newbie, the laughs around the après fire, the local ski hero and the thrill of it all are all still here, still present, attracting a new generation to this culture and lifestyle.
