SUMNER ALUMNI NEWS Vol. 3 Issue 1 Spring Newsletter of the Sumner High School Alumni Association of Kansas City, Kansas, Inc. 2013 Purpose of The A

PRESIDENT PINKARD’S PROLOGUE Greetings Sumner Alumni and Friends of Sumner High School: Here in K.C., it’s Spring! Mother Nature is taking a woman’s Dr. Deloris Pinkard prerogative to change her mind...regularly. Many of you know what they say about Kansas weather... “If you don’t like it, just wait a couple of days”. The exciting news from your Sumner Alumni Association is that as of early June, you will be able to log on to our Alumni web site!" Many

thanks go to Eric Harland, son of Ron Harland (C-1967), owner/CEO of Evolv Solutions in Overland Park, Kansas. Thanks to Ron, also. Sincere appreciation is expressed to Web Site Committee Chairperson Naomi Baker Evans (C-1960) and to her entire committee. Visit our web site at sumnerhsalumnikck.org. NOTE the slight – but important - change in the web address. The h s following Sumner designates high school, so be sure to include it. There are fond memories and lots of information. You can share your own memories and photos on the web site. Submit them as instructed on the site. LOCAL alumni, family, and friends who have not yet signed up for our Summer Bowling League still have time to do so. Please contact League Chairperson, Thomas Gordon (Class -

th

1967) at 816-506-3295 by May 26 to sign up. We’ll bowl in June, July, and part of August. We are trying to fill two time slots this session; 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Let us know your choice! Come out for some exercise and real fun! We bowl at KC Bowl on 82nd and State Avenue in KC KS. Cost is $15.00 per week for the 12weeks session. Remember that this also benefits our scholarship program. We congratulate two Sumnerites for their ongoing literary/stage accomplishments. Granvile T. O’Neal (C-1970) is appearing in Bud, Not Buddy at The Coterie Theatre, 2450 Grand Blvd. in KC MO. The story follows Buddy as he blazes his own trail in the Midwest during the

Depression Era. The play runs th rou gh M ay 22 , 20 13 . Congratulations, also, to Barbara Jewell Caruthers Banks (C-1965) who recently wrote and performed a one -woman dramatization of Mark 5:2534 from the Holy Bible and with the theme that “God handles ALL kinds of issues”. Please thoroughly read this newsletter, particularly our committee reports and budget requests. We NEED your membership dues ($25 ASAP) if we are to make things happen of which YOU can be proud. Until Next Time,

Deloris - (Class of 1962) Dr. Deloris Strickland Pinkard President, 2013-14

THIS MAY BE YOUR LAST ISSUE! With sincere gratitude, your Sumner Alumni Association offers our appreciation to each and every one of you who have assisted our efforts by paying your annual alumni dues, purchasing tickets to our JAZZ event, contributing to our Scholarship Fund, and helping with our postage costs. WE THANK YOU! As a special and final reminder to all Sumner alumni, please note that the Association has now re-evaluated our expenses and programs, and we must discontinue the mailing of our SUMNER ALUMNI NEWS to those who do not support the Association. WE U.S.-MAIL MORE THAN 500 NEWSLETTERS QUARTERLY. That is a lot of work and additional expense. IF YOU HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS ON FILE WITH US, WE WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THOSE NEWSLETTERS AS THERE IS LITTLE ADDITIONAL EXPENSE FOR US TO DO SO. However, if we do not receive your support through your

$25 annual membership dues, or in another supportive form, this will be your last U.S.-mailed Sumner Alumni newsletter. Assure that we can stay connected with you by making certain that we have your e-mail address (send to Naomi Baker Evans at nabaker60@yahoo.com or to our P.O. address on the back of this newsletter. Even better, use the P.O. Box address to mail your annual dues or any other form of contribution you would like to make to support our important efforts. STAY CONNECTED WITH US PLEASE. We enjoy being connected with you and hope that you are enjoying being connected to alumni friends and our Sumner legacy. Thank you.
