THE PRODUCERS of ASD Trade Shows are launching a new regional show, the Miami Wholesale Expo, at the Miami Airport Convention Center, September 30 to October 2, 2013. The Miami Wholesale Expo, Nielsen Expositions’ latest venture, is a wholesale merchandise event designed to expand relationships for vendors specializing in travel/ leisure products, health and beauty, resort apparel and footwear, novelty and souvenir items, and general merchandise. The event will take place on a Monday through Wednesday cycle, to accommodate retailers who conduct a high volume of business over the weekend. Nielsen’s flagship show, ASD Las Vegas, is the 15th largest trade show in the U.S., catering to more than 40,000 buyers and featuring 2,800 vendors. The show stages twice a year, in March and August, and attracts buyers from all 50 states and 42 countries. “With a show like ASD Las Vegas, we know why people travel all over the world to attend, because buyers and sellers can meet and do so much business together over four days. Since 2001, Golden Triangle Show has been presenting wholesale-only expos to provide retailers regional marketplaces to explore new merchandise trends and new products. Each show hosts between 250 and 300 exhibitors along with 6,000 to 8,000 buyers. Attendees sell both online and offline, at traditional brick and mortar shops such as jewelry stores, boutiques, gift shops and salons as well as at flea markets. With four shows in North Carolina and four more in Florida, buyers will be introduced to different merchandise than they find at Las Vegas or New York shows, Siddiqui assures. “We need to have several shows each year so buyers can refresh their merchandise, as they are turning over product quite a bit.” Buyers get the best merchandise and the best prices, he adds, and attendees can choose to purchase goods “cash ‘n’ carry” or to receive immediate delivery. PRODUCT TRENDS Cigarette Filters Trap Tar and Nicotine A GROWING interest in healthy living is leading many smokers to consider less harmful smoking alternatives, and NICSTOP cigarette filters are in line with this trend. PRODUCT TRENDS Cover Me Protects Toothbrushes FLUSHING A toilet sends bacteria eight feet into the air before it begins to settle on nearby surfaces, according to research by Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When Cindy Martin, co-owner of Cynita, Inc., learned of this, her mind raced to the toothbrushes that lay exposed on her bathroom countertop. Consumers are demonstrating an increasing interest in health and disease prevention, and Martin fell in line with the trend. Experienced with custom products, she worked with a designer to develop a lightweight, economical solution to the germy issue, and the Cover Me toothbrush protector is the result. Cover Me, a tall dome that fits over most standard size toothbrush holders, protects brushes from sink splashes, hairspray, room deodorizer and restroom germs. Each cover features a curved

bottom to allow for enough airflow to prevent mold from forming when toothbrushes are damp and to help quicken drying time. PRODUCT TRENDS RC Cars Get Smart EMIRIMAGE CORPORATION’S hottest product welds technology and speed in one of the most mobile friendly toys on the market. The firm specializes in slick remote control racecars, boats and helicopters, with none as sought after as the Inteliracer RC Car. “The biggest trend I’ve seen is that toys are continuing to move toward smartphone and tablet compatibility,” Eduardo Perl, president of the company, comments. “Children want the same experience with their toys as they have with their mobile devices. In the case of the Inteliracer, users are given the best of both worlds.” The Inteliracer’s internal mechanics are geared for optimal performance and agility. “This particular racecar operates on a 2.4 gigahertz capacity, meaning users experience less interference when playing with the toy,” Perl points out. Controlled by an app,
which can be downloaded for free, driving the racecar requires no additional remotes. The user simply pulls out a smartphone or tablet, turns on the mobile device and the Inteliracer, and proceeds to satisfy his or her need for speed. The screen will display a racetrack and allow the user to steer the car by tilting the device to the left or right. This motion sensitive technology is a new feature to Emirimage’s app operated cars, modeled after a Wii game. “It’s a unique function,” notes Perl. “We are sure it will be pleasing to our retailers and to their customers.” In addition to its intricate programming, the racecar is wired with LED light strips along its underside, giving it a look similar to the high-end cars seen in the blockbuster hit, “The Fast and the Furious.” Other continued on page 36

PRODUCT TRENDS Chic Shimmering Cosmetics Sets SHANY COSMETICS produces high quality, affordable nail polish, eye shadow, face powder and lipstick sets, as well as makeup cases, bags, and its newest addition, hair accessories. Marketing to makeup professionals since 2005, the company now offers cosmetics for retail to consumer sales as well. “We put several products into one package, and as a result, consumers save money and get a lot of color and brushes,” says Payam Pourmehr, company owner. “There is a huge demand for makeup that is highly pigmented and affordable, and we mix multiple colors in our palettes and have multiple palettes.” SHANY Cosmetics starts with basic product formulations and enhances them. “We use mineral oil instead of chemicals in 90 percent of our eye shadows,” Pourmehr stresses. “This turned out to be a very good decision because it makes the pigment shimmery and powdery, it’s a makeup artist’s dream.” For summer, warm and neutral colors will be big. “Usually, hot pinks, bright reds and yellows are popular for warmer weather, but this year it will be more about

neutral colors,” Pourmehr shares. SHANY Cosmetics’ three latest sets are Summerly, for everyday use, Ocean, for evening clubbing and late nights, and Neutral. “Neutral can be used as eye shadow, face bronzer, face powder and blush,” Pourmehr points out. The company also is introducing a third palette of nail polishes. To determine which colors it will combine into sets, the company works with fashion professionals, such as Pourmehr’s wife, Shany, a licensed makeup artist who developed the initial product line and after whom the company is named. “We ask a team of about 10 people to gather colors and brushes, and at the end of the day, we have the set picked and ready to send to production.” Palettes contain from three to 180 colors. Retail prices for sets of 70 to 100 colors generally are $15 to $20, and wholesale is about half of retail. Shoppers Flip Over Cool LED Lights PROMIER PRODUCTS is a leading supplier of bright, high quality, affordable LED flashlights that provide cool light and use less energy than old-fashioned flashlights. “LED lighting is up to 80 percent more efficient than a traditional incandescent bulb,” says Cody Grandadam, president and co-owner of the company. The patent-pending product can be used in many different ways, Grandadam shares. “There is a clip on the back of the light so you can attach it to your pocket, and it also has a magnet so you can stick it on a refrigerator. The product is six inches long and 1.5 inches wide, and opens to almost a foot so it can be placed on a table to use as a desk lamp. Mechanics put it on the tire well or shine it on a car engine, and it can be used as an outdoor deck light. It’s the perfect light for anyone in any situation.” Promier’s 36 LED flip light wholesales for $5 and retails for $9.99. A point of purchase display holds 16 pieces, and shipping is free with the purchase of one case of six displays. The product case is seven inches wide and has a window on the side so customers can sample the light and see its many features. “Space in
stores is limited and expensive, and retailers are looking for products that will appeal to everyone. This product does,” Grandadam points out. To meet the burgeoning interest in LED lights, the company recently opened an office in China, where it works on product design, and expanded its Peru, IL, warehouse to 200,000 square feet. NutraFuels Boosts Profits NUTRAFUELS, A line of oral sprays that supplies nutrients to the body, is unlike other energy supplements and remedies on the market. With a background in sports nutrition and fitness spanning 25 years, NutraFuels’ CEO Edgar Ward worked to develop a line of supplements that would be both efficient and effective. “We worked with a research and development team to learn about the effectiveness of this oral spray delivery system, and we were very impressed,” says Ward. Everyone Loves a Big Mouth BIG MOUTH Toys lets anyone express his inner imp with its exclusive line of high quality novelty items. Company owner and head prankster, Steve Wampold, launched Big Mouth Toys in 2001 with a line of fake parking tickets, fake winning lottery tickets and funny bumper stickers. “I was working in corporate America, and I was always a little entrepreneurial and always a prankster,” Wampold recalls. “I started a small Internet company, filling orders from my basement at night while I was working full time.” After just a year, Wampold’s products were so well received he was able to work exclusively on his passion for pranks, and today has 11 employees. “Unlike many other novelty and gift companies, we don’t take commodity goods in China,” Wampold points out. “We design and create everything ourselves.” Wampold combines unique, quirky gifts with his savvy business sense of what will sell, and introduces 30 to 50 new creations each year. Big Mouth Toys’ most successful item ever, new within the last year, is its red party cup can cooler. “It’s great for tailgating and colleges,” Wampold notes. The item wholesales for $5 and retails for $9.99. The company’s most famous product and its number two seller is the toilet mug. “Mugs are great gifts because they are fun and functional, and they are the right price point, usually selling for $10 to $20,” Wampold shares. “I thought a toilet mug would be funny. Drinks Don’t Sink THE DRINK Preserver for cups keeps beverages floating within arm’s reach when consumers are lounging in the swimming pool or hot tub. The idea came to owner, Brett Klisch, 12 years ago while he lazed in a pool, and the product launched at the New York International Gift Fair in January. Klisch anticipates it will be a hot seller on retailers’ summer display racks. “Passersby noticed the product at the gift fair because it was so different,” explains Klisch. “We demonstrate it using a tub of water and find that it’s an effective way to capture shoppers’ attention.”
The Drink Preserver is made of hard, hollow vinyl that withstands sunlight and harsh pool chemicals. It holds most 12 to 16-ounce beverage cups, and stays afloat regardless of how much liquid is in the cup. “Water bottles, sports bottles and plastic wine glasses without stems all work well in the product,” Klisch notes. The preserver is wide enough to prevent tipping and narrow enough to keep the cup from slipping into the pool. Its orange and white exterior, complete with a faux rope, resembles a real life preserver, and it is safe for use in a hot tub as long as the beverage container itself can withstand the heat. Klisch has also created a variation of the original Drink Preserver for holding a beverage can. The can version is made of smooth black vinyl with a fishnet beverage pocket for added security. Slightly smaller in size than the original cup preserver, the can preserver also works with little cups. A miniature version of the Drink Preserver for tea light candles also will be available this year. “Those make an excellent favor for pool parties,” Klisch adds. The tiny toy will be sold in packs of four or six. Drink Preservers are packaged in bright blue containers that can hang on a peg or be stacked in a carton display, which is available with the minimum purchase of 12 pieces. “The product sells itself to anyone who has ever attempted to enjoy a beverage in the pool, but the bright colors on our displays help get it in customers’ hands first,” he points out. ASD show in Las Vegas, The Name People is offering a deal on personalized ribbons, priced at $1 each. The company will be exhibiting at booth SL1113. “We like to refer to our personalized products as having ‘the best brand on the market,’“ comments Ross Johns, director of sales and marketing at LaserGifts, a souvenir and novelty company. Most of LaserGifts’ products are wooden, with custom laser engravings, and this year the company ventured into 3D lenticular designs. These images are similar to holograms in that they appear to move, but are clearer and brighter than typical hologram stickers. LaserGifts is looking into carrying more 3D lenticular products in the future. One of its most successful products to date is its solar powered key ring. “We have many requests for these, with a lenticular image of a tourist destination on one side, and the name of the consumer flashing on the other,” says Johns. “Those do particularly well in souvenir shops.” LaserGifts’ multipurpose tool, available in several sizes and finishes, is making strong sales this year, as well. and the displays often need frequent restocking,” Huusko points out. “Because of this, we’ve created completely custom displays with labels for each name on its corresponding peg.” For its name drop bracelets, Monster Trendz has a custom countertop display that holds 36 bracelets. The display is available for free with an order of 300 personalized pieces, which range from $.90 to $1.50, and can retail for $4.99. Customization options are key to selling nearly any item, and gifts and souvenirs are no exception. As consumers continue to tailor products, retail sales will reflect this trend. ■

ONE OF the most important elements for any independent retailerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success is developing his or her competitive edge, and there are many ways of doing this. In addition to ambience, categories of merchandise, customer service and value added services, the main key is the merchandise you sell. While there are a number of ways to set your merchandise apart from your competitors,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; one of the most effective ways is by being aware of current trends, utilizing them appropriately and capitalizing on the ones that will enhance your store and product line. There is, of course, a difference between a trend and a fad. The Pet Rock of 1975 is perhaps the best example of a fad, while natural products are a current trend and have been for some time, retailers want to capitalize
on both trends and fads. Fads are easy to spot, as they become obvious quickly, can mean lots of business overnight and can disappear almost as rapidly, leaving substantial markdowns behind. They should therefore be watched very carefully. Trends emerge, and die, more slowly than fads, so they can reap large rewards and be a much safer investment. As a shopkeeper, you have to decide just how trendy you want your store to be. Barneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Urban Outfitters, for example, always want to be on the cutting edge, while Macyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for many years wanted to be on the trend when it was cresting. Some stores, those primarily price-driven, are most comfortable with goods that are at the bottom of the trend curve. continued on page 85

MARKETING Win Popularity with Contests “THE FIRST person to comment on this post will receive a discount on the loaf of their choice,” Jeff Dorrian, “The Soap Guy,” posted recently on his Facebook page. More than 40 comments later, tardy responders were out of luck, but the boisterous chatter surrounding Dorrian’s soap persisted. Supply and demand are critical to strong sales figures, and Dorrian uses social tactics to sway the demand in his favor. For retailers considering hosting Facebook contests, here are a few points to consider. Facebook contests involve minimal risk on the part of the business and can be created in-house. They also improve the appearance of a business’s page because highlighting a post gives the page an appearance comparable to a magazine spread, increasing visual appeal. One factor in a consumer’s decision to participate in a contest is the amount of personal information he or she must disclose. Privacy and security can be areas of concern in contests that require a mailing address or phone number. The Soap Guy’s Facebook contests rarely require more than “liking” or sharing a post. The
company gains access to participants’ profile information without appearing intrusive. Once you publish a contest post, follow through and deliver the prize, and you’ll receive a gift in return. COMPANY UPDATE Self Defense Sells WHEN A police department receives an emergency call, the average response time is between nine and 13 minutes, according to the New York City Mayor’s management report. In more rural or suburban areas, this time can be even longer. Robert Lewis learned, after 35 years in law enforcement, that this amount of time can mean life or death for victims. Now, as owner of Steve’s Police and Security Supply LLC, he supplies civilians and retailers with self-defense products including pepper sprays and stun guns, plus other miscellaneous defense items. “Our best sellers right now are the stun guns,” Lewis says. “Pepper sprays are right behind them.” The company stocks a variety of brands, but Kimber Pepper Blasters by Kimber Firearms are the most sought after. The key to selling pepper sprays is to match the user with a product they will actually carry. “Fathers often come looking for the most sophisticated spray or Taser on the market, but their daughters want the zebra
printed or pink pepper spray because of how it looks,” Lewis explains. “The reality is that even if you get the best pepper spray in the world, it’s useless unless you carry it with you.” By pointing this out to end consumers, retailers can improve customer satisfaction and boost sales. Gel pepper sprays, a new formula so potent that police officers aren’t allowed to carry them, also are available in pink or black containers. “That spray has an absolutely terrible burn, even if a criminal has a tolerance to cayenne, the effective ingredient,” Lewis reveals. COMPANY UPDATE Psychedelic Posters Rock Sales THE GOOD old days are no farther than Wild Bill’s, a business built on age old paraphernalia, including Grateful Dead nonalcoholic wine, overgrown bobble head figurines, sepias and show print posters. With both an online presence and a shop in Middletown, CT, company owner Bill Ziegler has a passion for yesteryear, noting, “Nostalgia sells in all economies. We might have a bad economy, but people still buy nostalgic items because they bring them back to better times.” The company offers wacky whatnots, rock ‘n’ roll buttons, postcards and magnets, and has been doing political and satirical posters for 20 years. Posters are a huge part of Wild Bill’s, and the firm sells more than 600 designs, featuring sentimental events and classic rock ‘n’ roll bands. Ziegler’s posters favor bands from the 1960s, and he is always adding fresh merchandise to his line. New to Wild Bill’s this year are glow in the dark show print posters, made of heavy cardboard stock and about 14 by 22 inches large. “They are like the old black light posters of the 70s. You put them under a black light and they glow,” Ziegler points out. Introductory artwork includes
psychedelic swirls and rock and roll icons, all printed in the company’s shop on an old Heidelberg press, with more designs to come. Pricing is tiered, and posters wholesale for $5 each for 10 pieces, $2.75 each for 100 and $2.25 each for 1,000 pieces. There is no minimum order, and a single order can contain different poster designs.
