NEWS Retail Sales Up RETAIL SALES exceeded expectations, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, despite headwinds caused by extreme weather in the Northeast and a continued adjustment to higher payroll taxes. Monthly retail sales figures for February totaled $421.4 billion, an increase of 1.1 percent over the previous month, and 4.6 percent over February 2012. February retail sales excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants increased 0.7 percent seasonally adjusted from January and increased 0.5 percent unadjusted year-over-year.

“While gasoline prices helped lift the overall sales in February, core retail sales were also strong and demonstrate the resilience of consumers in a slowly recovering economy,” said Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) president Sandy Kennedy.

“Recognizing the continued challenges consumers face, retailers remain nimble, adjusting marketing, promotions and product assortments to earn their share of consumer spending.”

“Retail continues to show its importance to the economy,” National Retail Federation (NRF) president and CEO Matthew Shay noted. “That said, our consumer research consistently shows a cautious shopper that is making tough spending decisions based upon economic uncertainties, lower paychecks and higher prices for things such as gas. This is particularly true among those making $50,000 or less a year.”

“Consumers, once again, exceeded economists’ expectations and estimates in February,” NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz added. “It may be too early to measure the impact of the payroll tax hike and higher gasoline prices on consumer spending. However, this portends a good, but not great, first quarter for retailers as consumers continue to breathe life into the economy.”

The February retail sales gains come as retailers draw closer to action on federal legislation to level the playing field between Main Street retailers and their online only competitors. ■

NEWS NY International Gift Fair Reorganizes THE NEW York International Gift Fair (NYIGF) is becoming NY NOW as part of a three-year reorganization of the event. The tagline for the event, which will take place August 17-21 at the Javits Center and Pier 94, is, “NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle.�

This summer, NY NOW’s 2,800+ exhibitors will be repositioned into four broad market collections.

NY NOW Home will present a collection of 1,200 home furnishings, home textiles, decorative accessories, tabletop and gourmet housewares on Level 3 of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. NEWS Facebook Gets Facelift FACEBOOK INC. recently revealed a new look for its News Feed that provides a more visual, personalized appearance, similar to a well-curated magazine, says Facebook’s director of design, Julie Zhuo. The updated feed also organizes content by type, such as “All Friends,” “Photos,” “Music” and “Following.”

The News Feed, which displays updates from friends and companies, is where users reportedly spend 40 percent of their time on the social network. With the new design, the News Feed looks the same, whether it is viewed on a desktop computer or a mobile device.

The redesigned News Feed could result in keeping people on the feed longer, a prospect that will be appealing to advertisers. Moreover, Facebook’s revamped News Feed focuses on video, images and mobile, areas where marketers are increasingly looking to expand their investments in the next three to five

years, according to a 2012 Altimeter Group survey.

Facebook says the News Feed revamp will not change the algorithm the social network uses to select what it considers the most relevant content in the “Top Stories” section of each Facebook user’s News Feed. A Facebook user sees only a fraction of the content his or her connections post on the social network. However, marketers can use Facebook’s Promoted Posts product to pay to ensure a certain percentage of Facebook users see its message.

The News Feed redesign is expected to present additional opportunities for Facebook to roll out new ad units, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said, “As our News Feed design evolves to show richer kinds of stories, that opens up new opportunities to offer different kinds of ads as well.” ■

The new one he is wearing is a black palm, and we’re going to be introducing our own version of that as well.”

Palm hats are a natural straw palm made in the traditional western style. They feature a four-inch brim and have a lower crown than other western style hats.

Do-it-Yourself Wine Rack Kit WINE SALES are booming, and the U.S. and Asia are expected to drive a six percent increase in global wine consumption between 2011 and 2015, according to data and market intelligence group International Wine & Spirit Research (IWSR). That bodes well for Chris Stenhouse, owner of Northhouse Fabrications Inc., who recently introduced a Do-it-Yourself wine rack kit designed to hold four bottles of wine. It was fun, and I started trading them to gather tools and equipment. I’ve always been interested in art, and I’ve created several wine rack designs including some which look like boat anchors and sailboats. OdorNo Biodegradable Bag ODORNO ODOR-BARRIER disposable bags are planet friendly vessels that conceal the scents of everyday waste from diapers, incontinence, pets, garbage and more. “With our innovative and proprietary technology, our bags truly block odor, whereas other bags have odor technology but you can still smell the waste through the bag,” explains Garrett Fortune, founder and CEO of OdorNo. “Other products use perfumes or powders, which blend with the odor but don’t block it.”

OdorNo bags are single use, and available in multiple sizes, including a two-gallon bag for home use, a 13-gallon bag for home health care, nursing homes and hospitals, and a 42-gallon multilayer bag for lawn and leaf collection. “It’s more durable than paper lawn and leaf bags,” Fortune points out, “and it’s environmentally friendly.” The company also has a two-gallon bag for pet waste, primarily used for kitty litter and yard cleanup, as well as a smaller bag for dog walks.

“We’re selling more pet bags than anything. The fact that you don’t have to walk around the block with a stinky bag is appealing to many people.” OdorNo will be introducing six additional sizes throughout the next several months.

To use, consumers simply place a waste product in the appropriate size bag, tie it closed and throw it in the garbage. Importantly, OdorNo uses all recycled resins, and its bags are fully biodegradable. “We have an additive in the bag that allows it to biodegrade in nine months to five years, whereas most plastics take 10,000 years to biodegrade,” Fortune shares. OdorNo bags are made in the company’s new Cleveland, OH, plant. “I wanted our products to be made in the USA,” Fortune stresses. “I was in Special Forces in the Army

Keep Bugs at Bay NO ONE likes to have their personal space invaded by mosquitos, gnats, flies and unseen bugs, and consumers are looking for ways to safely protect themselves and their families from these annoying pests, without the use of messy, and often toxic, bug sprays. Retailers who incorporate Bandz and Spotz, DEET-free, citronella-infused insect repellent products from Mosquitno, LLC, into their product offerings, can help consumers keep bugs away, as well as enjoy the profits these impulse buys bring to their bottom lines.

Mosquitno owner Bob Dix, along with a European partner, created Bandz by infusing non-toxic citronella oil, a scientifically proven natural mosquito repellent, into a silicone rubber wristband, in 2009. Bandz are effective for six days, and come in a resealable package to preserve effectiveness when not in use. “Anecdotal testing and reviews have found our wristbands more effective and a better quality than other similar products on the market,” says Carolyn Ellspermann, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Mosquitno.

MARKETING Flash Sales Spark Business THE PRACTICE of running flash sales has grown into a $2 billion business, and visits to the top five flash sales websites nearly doubled in 2012, according to comScore, Inc. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For retailers, flash sales can be an extremely effective tool in capturing consumersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; attention, getting them to their site and enticing them to buy not only flash items, but also full-price merchandise,â&#x20AC;? says Maria Haggerty, president of Dotcom Distribution, a provider of fulfillment and logistics solutions. Traditional retailers are also seeing success through flash sales and one to two hour, â&#x20AC;&#x153;power lunches.â&#x20AC;? Before running a flash sale, Haggerty recommends retailers plan ahead by considering several questions: 1) Do you have the inventory depth to run the sale?

More than 45 percent of flash sale offers sell out faster than anticipated. This means retailers are driving customers to their stores only for them to find that the sale item is out-of-stock. A retailerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s logistics provider or department should have the

2) Did you select the right products to sell? Roughly 57 percent of flash sale buyers are women. Do you know who is frequenting your store for these deals? Tapping into similar insights can help retailers select the right product mix for their flash sale demographic.

3) Are you ready to ship the items? One of the top complaints from flash sale buyers is that their orders took too long to get to them, or that their products came in several shipments. If customers donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the goods in a timely manner and with transparent communication, they are unlikely to purchase from you again.

SHOPPING IS a social activity that, in its earlier incarnations, was a bartering interaction, where negotiation and fairness were expected when trading goods.

Later, the fixed store became a meta-gathering place, and then malls provided additional amenities to augment the experience, including restaurants, entertainment and even apartments.

While the buying experience has fundamentally changed in recent years, the most successful brands still understand the power of hightouch interaction. High-touch has previously been defined as personal, face-to-face customer service, but

There’s been a lot of conjecture lately that ecommerce will crush the retail stores. In a Pando Daily interview, Marc Andreessen predicted the death of traditional retail, and is quoted as saying, “Retail guys are going to go out of business and ecommerce will become the place everyone buys. You are not going to have a choice.” This completely underplays the importance of brick and mortar shops as social centers, something that can’t be replaced by the Internet machine.

If they are not a sports fan, we offer other themes, too, such as wedding, relationship and children’s images.”

“When we get phone calls from our customers they are buying a lot of replacement rings and they are so happy.

They are overwhelmed with sales.”

Marketing materials are included with the kit along with tips of the trade.

“We include many ideas for vendors,” Nelson points out. For example, the company reveals how vendors can craft the “Rainbow Ring,” one of the company’s most popular styles.

Vendors also receive an instruction manual and video with step-by-step instructions on how to operate the stamping machine. It is incredibly easy to use, Nelson stresses, and it takes less than one minute to personalize a ring for the customer. The product is so new, he continues, that less than two percent of malls presently carry it, and the market is wide open for sales.

Along with personalized products, remote control helicopters hit the mark when it comes to kiosk sales, and Valors Inc. has been committed to selling high-quality R/C helicopters, as well as cars, since 2007. Hank Ho, sales and service manager of Valors, says R/C helicopters are a staple at kiosks because they are easy to operate and demonstrate, and shoppers love them. Ho suggests vendors offer a mix of products, and while many retailers devote entire carts to R/C helicopters, others are diversifying. “Some vendors who carry our helicopters also carry other products, or they’ll have a neighboring cart that car-

The large is a solid item overall that is easy to control, it sells and attracts attention.”

For vendors in the beginning stages of selling at a kiosk, Valors’ standard R/C helicopter package includes five boxes: two small, one medium and two large. Generally, there are 18 to 24 small helicopters per box and one piece wholesales for $14; there are 12 medium pieces per case and each one wholesales for $24; and there are four large pieces per case, which wholesale for $40 per piece. The standard package wholesales for around $1,400, and markup is generally three times. Larger helicopters, however, wholesale for around $70 and can retail for as much as $300.

Valors also offers a package that includes either newer items or those that are more resistant to online competition. Beyond that, for vendors who have multiple carts or are thinking of becoming distributors, Valors offers large discounts, Ho states. The company gives vendors the option to purchase individual styles as well, and prefers a minimum order of one case or $300.

Finally, Ho suggests that retailers research marketplaces to find the most cost effective approach to selling their products. Kiosk rentals vary greatly by season, location and length of contract. In one Texas mall, for example, vendors pay as much as $15,000 a month starting in mid-October for the holiday season, and the rest of the year the cost is around $6,000 per month.

Carts and kiosks offer retailers the opportunity to operate lucrative shops in locations of their choosing, for the length of time that suits their products, as temporary stores also work well for seasonal businesses.

Overall strategies critical to retail success include selling merchandise about which you are passionate, as well as knowledgeable, in a venue where you know, and can speak to your clientele, and perfecting a pitch that resonates with customers. ■

Furthermore, Ho says that a retailer getting into this business needs to be a bit of a tinkerer or know someone who is because oftentimes problems customers encounter are very easily resolved. “It could be something as simple as tightening a screw or unplugging and plugging back in the cable. It is really easy to sell these products but you have to be prepared with after service. Vendors need to play with the products to

In our industry, that is critical because we deal with many items that are close to expiring and time is of the essence for our customers.” While the business is growing, Nubani is making sure it has a solid foundation of support, and more than 30 employees serve in a range of departments including human resources, logistics, financing, shipping and receiving.

Furthermore, Nubani recently purchased the 150,000 square foot warehouse it occupies in Bellwood, IL. “The warehouse is only six years old, and it’s completely temperature controlled to preserve the quality of our chocolate and other products,” Nubani comments. “Our warehouse is immaculate and I’m very proud of the condition we keep it in. We keep all our product on racks, we polish, buff and wax our floors

every three months, and we make sure nothing is open or in the aisles.”

With all the pieces neatly in place, Nubani continues to develop at a phenomenal pace, having grown 35 to 40 percent each year for the last five years. Sales were $28 million in 2012, and this year the company is on pace to do $36 million in sales. “That’s partly because of the direction in which we are moving, to carry new items like snacks, grocery, and health & beauty,” Nubani notes. “It’s also because we follow the core values our father has instilled in us, honesty and what goes around comes around twice as hard.
